S cania will end 2014 with record sales in Norway. The number of buses commissio-

ned since the start of the year amounts to 235, to date an all-time-high for Scania in Norway, the country that last year reported over 1,200 new bus and coach registra-tions. This result is due to a com-binat ion of factors, such as the broa-dest range of engines for al-ternative fuels (part icular ly appreciated in Northern Eu-rope), from natural gas and biogas to other commercially available biofuels such as ethanol or rapeseed methyl ester (RME). The certainty that 2014 will be a record year for Scania in the Norwegian market came with the signing of an agreement for the deli-very of 99 buses and coaches to a consortium

of operators in the Eastern Norway region of Østlandet. The order includes city buses of the Scania Citywide LE series and intercity coaches OmniExpress and Higer A30. “We are reaping the rewards of long-term, target-o-

riented work. S c a n i a ’ s market posi-tion is stron-ger than ever, with a broad product and service offe-ring. This is confirmed by the apprecia-tion we recei-ve from ope-rators as well as their dri-vers and pas-sengers,” said Olav Dårflot,

Manager of Bus and Coach Sales at Norwe-gian subsidiary Norsk Scania AS.In the services market, Norsk Scania is achie-ving success through repair and maintenan-ce contracts tailored to individual operator needs. •

Testing 35 plug-in hybrid, full electric and battery-powered trolleybuses built by six

European manufacturers. This is the objective of the ZeEUS project (Zero Emission Urban Bus System) coordinated by UITP, the Eu-ropean public transport asso-ciation. This is the first project of its kind to test 12-metre+ electric buses in real operational conditions. The project in-terests eight European cities and was laun-ched October 15 in Barcelona where local public transport operator TMB (Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona) will test four full electric buses: two i2e Irizar buses and two Solaris articulated buses. The i2e is a standard 12-metre bus with a run-ning range of up to 200-250 km and braking energy recovery system. The sodium-nickel

batteries and the ultra-capacitors are rechar-ged overnight in the TMB depot. The first unit began circulating with passengers along Barcelona bus lines on August 18. The two

18-metre Sola-ris articulated buses will inste-ad be charged along the rou-te of the line. The charging system sup-plies an electric charge of 400 kW CC throu-gh a retractable pantograph on the roof. The two articu-lated buses are scheduled to be operational in

June 2015. The demonstration in Barcelona will end in February 2017.Other cities participating to the ZeEUS project are London and Glasgow in the UK, Stockholm in Sweden, Münster and Bonn in Germany, Plzen in the Czech Republic and Cagliari in Italy. •

G erman company Recaro expands its range of seating

solutions with a modular system to adjust the seatbelt height, ad-ded massage functions and other electrical adjustment options. The new massage function has been integrated by means of the air chambers in the standard lumbar support model. There is also the new comfort massage module with a sophisticated system of ten air cushions. It can be individual-ly activated and it provides maxi-mum comfort over the long haul. Both systems offer an advantage in terms of preventing back pain and thus represent an important option for drivers. Recaro also offers innovative upholstery solutions such as the Trim and Fabrics products of Johnson Controls (parent company of Recaro Automotive Seating) with powerful new coating technology that repels dirt and liquids. •

THE TIS-Web Fleet App by VDO,

a brand of Continental Corpo-ration, allows for simpler and faster data download of the driver card. The combination of the TIS-Web Fleet Apps with the TIS-Web management software allows for the data download of the driver card by connecting the tachograph (version 1.4 or higher) with a smartphone via “DTCO Smar-

tLink” Bluetooth device. The driver is alerted via smartphone about pending driver card download thanks to an automatic reminder that’s been pre-set on the TIS-Web platform and, once the download has been initiated, tachograph data from the driver card are directly transferred to the TIS-Web archi-ve. The transfer of data takes place without the need to insert the company’s card on the vehicle or in the PC at the office. It cannot get any easier than this. •

M asats, a Spanish company speciali-

sed in the manufacturing of doors, leaf-doors and accessibility solutions for passenger transport vehicles, introduces a new series of high-per-formance pneumatic mo-

dules for doors and emergency system control. The new DM3 combines the door and emergency open/close functions into a single module. Valid for all kinds of pneu-matic doors, the system provides various functions such as emergency locking when the vehicle is moving, emergency door function during opening and closing, zero force posi-tion to protect users from being hit during resetting or false open-close switching. Masats also launches the MDM1 module for emergency con-trol in electric equipment with pneumatic emergency. The door control pneumatic system (incorporating all door functions) meets all Regulation R107 requirements in a single compact module. Due to the fact that it features less external components, it also ensures the reliability and performance of the system. •

OFFERS FOR ITALY

International Bus Expo did not disappoint expectations. International manufacturers participated in full and Italian bodybuilders faced the competition by focusing on quality

IT’S the only significant event perta-ining the Italian bus sector, and,

once again, this year’s edition of the Interna-tional Bus Expo in Rimini hit the mark. Two exhibition halls at the Rimini Trade Fair hosted the display of product offers by manufacturers, bodybuilders and components specialists (fifty in total). The flow of visitors did not disappoint exhibitors’ expectations.Focusing on intercity and tourism transport, im-portant manufacturers, such as Daimler, Iveco, MAN and Volvo, by and large presented a more or less comprehensive collection of models al-ready familiar in the Italian market. Among the products unveiled at the recent IAA event in Hannover there was only the newest creation by Van Hool. A real first time participation, instead, came from English company Optare that will sell its electric and diesel models in Italy throu-gh Basco. To note the absence of King Long,

Otokar and Temsa, among others.Special consideration should go to bodybuilders specialising in small-size vehicles. Alongside

the familiar names of the vehicles ‘Made in Italy’, such as Tomas-sini, Sitcar, D’Auria and NewCar, Rimini saw a proliferation of low-cost foreign offers, perhaps cheaper in ter-ms of purchase value, but yet to be evaluated in terms of quality and after-sales assistance. Those product offers are a symptom of the status of the Italian

market: badly hit by the economic crisis and characterised by limited financial resources.Let’s start with the new entry for the Italian market: buses featu-ring the Optare logo. These models are im-ported by Basco that, in addition to being in charge of sales, will also be responsible for assistance services. Under the spotlight, there was the Solo SR in the right-hand drive version (which is, of course, available also with left-hand drive), an all-electric drive

vehicle with 150 kW engine and lithium iron magnesium phosphate batteries that can be recharged in two (quick charge) or six hours. Available in the lengths of 9 and 9.7 metres, it is built on a self-supporting stainless steel struc-ture and fits 37 seats. Also featured, the Metro-City (already in the left-hand drive version), a 10.6-metre long low-entry bus with 13 tonnes gross vehicle weight and 27 seats on double rows plus wide wheelchair area with four fol-ding seats and raised driver’s workstation. The electric variant has a running range of 140 km, while the diesel version (on display) mounts a Mercedes engine with 156 or 176 hp and Alli-son automatic transmission controlled via the short lever on the dashboard below the left side window.Another debut came from Belgian company Van Hool: the EX series. Seen at the IAA preview in Hannover in September, it’s the new touring

litre OM 471 Mercedes-Benz engine (Euro VI) with eight-speed GO 250-8 PowerShift Merce-des gearbox, and by the 10.32-metre Tourismo in the ‘K’ version and 16 RHD of 12.1. Also sporting the Setra logo there were two represen-tatives of the TopClass series, the 13.98-metre long two levels S 431 DT with 510 hp OM 471 engine combined with GO eight-speed automa-tic transmission, and the S 517 HDH measuring 14.16 metres in length and 3.88 metres in hei-ght. The 12.3-metre ComfortClass S 515 HD model was also on display. The Iveco Bus stand also hosted an impressi-ve parade of vehicles. For the high-end touring segment there were a couple of Magelys in the sizes of 12.2 and 12.7 metres with Cursor 9 Euro VI engine with 400 hp combined, in the first case, with an As-tronic automatic transmis-

coach range that can also find application in intercity and regular service segments. On di-splay there was the EX 16M measuring 13.26 metres in length and 3.67 in height, equipped with a 394 hp Paccar/Daf MX11 engine with GO manual transmission. Representing the Van Hool brand there were also the already familiar double-decker models TX 17 Altano and TX 27 Astromega with 93 seats and 500 kg of luggage capacity. By far the most crowded exhibition space was Daimler’s, showcasing Mercedes and Setra mo-dels, featuring a giant screen displaying images from the blog “La Città dell’autobus” (The Bus City) and live interviews with people visiting the stand. The Mercedes range was represented by touring coach Travego 16 RHD, measuring 13 metres in length and powered by the 12,8

sion and, in the second, with a ZF manual tran-smission. The 12.2-metre Magelys was fitted with 55 seats plus guide, two LCD monitors, reverse camera and coffee maker. Suitable for a variety of solutions ranging from service line to tourism applications, there was the Cros-sway Pro with 400 hp Cursor 9 engine with Voith automatic transmission, 53 seated and 15 standing passenger capacity and equipped with a 38 kW air-conditioning system with integrated heating function. A compact size touring solu-tion, instead, was offered by the 7.5-metre New Daily Tourys, with 170 hp FIC.17 engine and 19 seats plus guide. Finally, intended for city services, there was the 12-metre Crossway LE City powered by a Tector 7 (285 hp) with ZF automatic transmission, room for 38 seated and 54 standing passengers and wheelchair area.

In Rimini, MAN celebrated the delivery of the new Neoplan Cityliner to the Baltur Group of Teramo and of the MAN Lion’s City GL CNG to ATB of Bergamo which purchased 11 such vehicles. The Cityliner is 12.24-metre long and fits 48+1+1 seats; it is powered by the MAN D2676 LOH 30 Euro VI engine (440-hp) combined with 12-speed MAN TipMatic gear-box. Equipment includes driver’s berth, toilet, power sockets for each two-seater, WiFi, DVD player with two monitors and antenna, multi-function leather steering-wheel. The 12-metre MAN Lion’s City CNG has three entrances and is CNG-powered by the six-cylinder MAN E-2876 LUH 07 with 310 hp and four 294 litres cylinders. It has a capacity of 27 seated plus 71 standing passengers (67 in the configuration with wheelchair area). To note that the articu-

The Swedish manufacturer drew the visitors’ atten-tion to the variety of solutions offered by Volvo Bus Services such as the optimal Volvo Bus Fleet Management, economical driving thanks to courses aimed at drivers and optimised main-tenance through services specifically developed for bus operators. In Rimini Irizar Italia presented a selection of the touring range with Scania drives starting with the New Century 12.35 HD with 410 hp engine, eight-speed Scania Optcruise transmission and 53 seats plus guide, moving to the unmistakable PB in the high-rise version, 12 metres in length, 50 passengers and 450 hp engine, and ending with the i6 of 12 and 14 metres. For the intercity service segment Irizar showcased the 12.2-me-tre i4 L with 320 hp engine and six-speed ZF

lated version of the CNG Lion’s Coach City recently won the award Bus of the Year 2015. At the forefront there was also the MAN RR2 Galileo, measuring 10.34 m in length and 3.68 m in height, with MAN D 2066 LOH 32 Euro VI engine with 400 hp. It’s a touring coach with 41+1+1 seats manufactured in collabora-tion with bodybuilder Barbi. On display also a 12-metre Lion’s Coach and a Neoplan Skyliner. Dutch group VDL Bus & Coach showcased its flagship products: the Futura and the Syner-gy. The first can come in the 12.9-metre long HD2 129/440 tourism version, fitting 53+1+1 seats and powered by a 440 hp DAF engine controlled by the As-tronic transmission or else in the FMD2 129/370 service line version with 57/53+16+1 seats configuration, wheelchair lift at the centre entrance with a large single door. The double-decker Synergy DSS 141/510 is 14.1-metre long and is powered by the DAF MX-13 375 engine with 510 hp ZF AS Tronic

Ecolife automatic transmission. Alongside the big names in the bus sector, the-re were also mini and midi buses bodybuilders. Tomassini Style, which this year is celebrating its 50th anniversary, unveiled the new low-flo-or city bus (lowered rear overhang) built on Mercedes Sprinter 519. Measuring 6.7 metres it accommodates 8 seated plus 18 standing pas-sengers and a wheelchair. It is driven by a 190 hp engine combined with 7G Tronic automatic transmission and with Telma retarder. WE have seen them debut at the IAA in-ternational showcase in Hannover.

Motionless, displaying the familiar aesthetic appeal of Setra coaches. We appreciated the rest of their personality when we went for a ride as part of the demonstration tour across the streets of Burgenland, Austria. We are talking about four new Setra models that complete the ComfortClass 500 series: two HD (High Decker) and two MD (Middle Decker) models. The firsts pertain to downward and upward length extensions in addition to the previously available models measuring 12.3 m (S 515 HD) and 13 m (S 516 HD), introduced in the

Four new models complete the Setra ComfortClass series. Two new lengths for the High Deckers (10.5 and 15 metres) and two middle-deckers for the new MD series (12.3 and 13.1 metres)

THE TEAM IS COMPLETEmarket in 2012. The new S 511 HD measu-res just 10,465 mm in length while the S 519 HD stretches to permissible maximum length levels at 14,945 mm. Two very different vehi-cles in terms of usage but paradoxically very similar in terms of ease in handling. The compact S 511 HD is suitable for luxu-rious VIP shuttle services but also for dri-ving up mountain passes or generally narrow and winding roads. Short wheelbase (5,005 mm) and shorter overhangs compared to its older brothers (120 mm and 625 mm shorter for the rear and front segments respectively) provide it with a turning circle of just 17,468 mm.

The number of seats and luggage capacity vary according to configuration. A typical layout featuring a centre entrance can fit up to 41 passengers (three-star classification) and 5.3 m³ of luggage space (with toilet) or 6.5 m³ (without toilet). With a rear entrance located on the rear overhang, the number of seats goes down to 38, but luggage compartment

capacity increases to 7.5 m³. It is predestined for a possible installation of variable kitchen modules or an exclusive Vip area in the rear. The impressive power output of the OM 470 is optionally available to transmit its 394 horsepower through the fully automated GO 250-8 PowerShift eight-speed manual tran-smission. The S 519 HD, instead, offers the highest seating capacity among single-deckers: up to 71 passengers and up to 12.4 cubic metres of luggage compartment volume (without toilet). Thanks to the self-steering third axle the vehi-cle has a turning circle of 23.6 metres, but is even more appreciated for its comprehensive stability on the road. A feature that increases passenger comfort and makes it particularly suitable for international long-distance routes. It is powered by the OM 470 engine or, optio-nally, by the more powerful OM 471 (476 horsepower). Finally, representing a novelty in terms of scope of applications, there are the two new models of the MD series with medium-hei-

ght floor: the S 515 MD that measures 12,295 mm in length and the S 516 MD measuring 13,115 mm. Suitable for scheduled servi-ces or as shuttle coach, their overall height is reduced to 3,560 mm without sacrificing headroom, which is the same as in the HD series at 2,100 mm. Also, it is provided with all the typical comfort features of the Comfor-tClass 500 series, such as the Bosh audio ste-reo system, separate climate control settings for passengers and driver, entrance and aisle LED lighting. The 12.3-metre model can fit up to 49 pas-sengers and 6.1 m³ of luggage compart-ment capacity (48 passengers and 8 m³ for the configuration with a rear door). For the 13.1-metre version, depending on the whe-re the entrance is positioned, the number of passengers rises to 53 and 50 respectively and the volume of the luggage compartment goes up to 7.8 and 9.7 m³. It can also come in the configuration with a wheelchair lift mounted behind the first axle. The standard engine for both models is the

7.7 l OM 936 with 354 hp, combined with GO 190 manual transmission. Optionally, it is also available with the OM 470 with 360 or 394 hp and with GO 210 manual transmis-sion or the GO 250-8 PowerShift automatic gearbox. It should be noted that the new MD will cost 5-7% less than the corresponding HD models. •

F irst public outing on the road for the new Solaris Urbino. Soon after its launch at the

IAA in Hannover, we were able to test it on the track of the Parc Motor Castellani, Cata-lonia, and to check first-hand the virtues of this bus which will go into production at the beginning of 2015. Two Urbinos were available for the occasion, both in the 12-metre size but with different engines on the rear trunk, just like they are offered for sale. The first was powered by the 10.8 litre Daf/Paccard MX-11 engine delive-ring 271 kW (368 hp) and with 1,600 Nm of torque, but is also available in the 210 and 240 kW versions. The second mounted the

smaller 6.7-litre Cummins ISB6.7E6 with with 209 kW (284 horsepower) and 1,100 Nm of torque, also available with power ratings of 187 and 231 kW. The upcoming Urbino CNG version will also be powered by a Cummins engine. Both vehicles were equipped with Voith Diwa.6 automatic transmission (also available with ZF Ecolife) and therefore during the test drive the only difference came from engine power, as noticeable when tackling the uphill sections along the route. Given that the test drives did not include a comparison of consu-mption data resulting from vehicles payload, we cannot report if indeed there’s any signi-

ficant difference in favour of either engine. Obviously, choice of preference should be determined by assessing the morphological characteristics of the route where the Urbino will take service, thus opting for Daf engines when facing more demanding routes. It should be noted that, in order to reduce fuel consumption, Voith transmissions are available with SensoTop shifting program that adapts gear-shifting to route topography. It can be said that driving performance of the new Urbino is excellent. In addition to the favourable performance of the front-ax-le independent suspensions (same as for the

current Urbino), there is a new, progressive suspensions adjustment system that can be specified to automatically adapt itself to the state of the road.Improved rigidity and robustness of the bo-dyframe (in spite of being significantly li-ghter), was achieved by strengthening the connections between vertical and horizontal steel profiles. To note that the flooring makes use of a combination of stainless steel sheets and plywood, providing improved resistance and insulation. Better axle loads distribution is achieved by shifting the fuel tank to the front axle, as

well as all compressed air tanks. Regarding maintenance service, accessibility to technical equipment is improved thanks to side hatches that now open to 170˚ (40˚ more than up to now) and to easily removable screwed body paneling. The interior of the new Urbino is free of vi-brations whatsoever and a quiet riding expe-rience is ensured by a maximum noise level of 74.8 dBA (manufacturer’s claim), well be-low international standard regulations. To the benefit of passenger comfort, entrance doors are wider (1230 mm or 1250 as optio-nal) and up to 16 seats which are directly

accessible from the pe-destal-free low-floor.The improved driver’s cab is now more ergo-

nomic with the seat raised 50mm higher than before for improved visibility through the pa-noramic windscreen. Finally, it’s impossible to avoid talking about the Urbino’s new aesthetic with a sharpening of the traditional rounded lines of the wind-shield sloping base, added elegance for the lighting units, wheel arches and upper roof edge. •
