WELCOME
Welcome to our 8th annual meeting. Of course, it’s not how we envisaged ‘getting together’ this year. Hugs and handshakes have been replaced by taps and apps. And after months of lockdown, restrictions and the postponement of normal life, we’re all zoomed out of our minds by now.
But this unexpected pause to normal proceedings does bring the chance to take a step back, to reflect and re-evaluate. It’s a time to make changes before we reopen, restart and reimagine the future of our industry.
Combining (as always) a conference, mini-expo and networking tools, TheTicketingBusiness Forum 2020 brings together a global gathering of business leaders who are charting the course to the next generation of ticketing, marketing, CRM and data solutions.
This year we welcome a bigger, more global attendance than ever. And with no capacity limits on the virtual platform, we can open up the Forum to all of our TheTicketingBusiness.com readers wherever they are on this planet.
There’s plenty to learn and share over the next three days with the fantastic (albeit globally, socially-distanced) audience. I believe everybody logging in has something to offer to the future eco-system. So do make the most of this opportunity to log in and get connected!
Ian Nuttall & TheTicketingBusiness team
PS. We are committed to making TheTicketingBusiness the industry’s most valued partner – so, if you enjoy your time with us, please tell your colleagues. But if you don’t, please contact us right away and we’ll get it fixed!

AHEAD OF THE REST: AUSTRALIA’S RETURN TO LIVE Lessons in restarting – and reimagining – the live experience
Our industry has been heartened by recent news headlines. One set promises the arrival of a vaccine – perhaps soon enough to save next summer’s festival season. The second set, from Australia, herald the first major indoor arena concerts since lockdown closed venues worldwide. A partnership between TEG and LiveNation – and backed by the Government of New South Wales – Greatest Southern Nights is the first concert series at Australia’s largest arena – the 21,000-capacity Qudos Bank Arena – in eighth months. It will welcome 6,000 fans, socially-distanced each night. This is not about making money. This is about restarting our live music sector. One event at a time. To share this restart story, we welcome:

FACING THE MUSIC Analysis of Covid-19's impact on the UK Live Music sector
The live music industry – which was worth £4.5 billion to the UK economy in 2019 – is one of the business sectors worst affected by the coronavirus pandemic, being among the first to close and very likely to be the last to fully reopen. Two industry experts reflect on the lessons of their work to help save the sector:
• Building robust evidence to present to government; • Dismantling misinformation; • Ensuring every sector was represented; • Simplifying messaging to a non-expert audience; • Driving action: minimising harm/securing a route to speedy recovery.

TOUTING THE YEARS AWAY The fightback is in full swing – so what’s next?
2020 saw the live sector hit pause, but secondary ticketing is awash with change. Google has now been sanctioned, the Stubagogo merger is under pressure, and major new EU legislation is being unveiled. What’s next for those in the fightback against unethical resale?

Over the past two years the organisations have searched the world for innovative solutions to improve the fan experience, both digitally and physically. AN ENGAGING JOURNEY Moving members from products to value
The British Museum is one of the ‘must see’ attractions for any visitor to London. Dedicated to human history, art and culture, this public institution houses some eight million works and welcomes more than six million visitors a year. But what of its returning customers – the museum’s ‘regulars’ who want more than a quick tour of the Mummies and the gift shop? British Museum Membership has been recognised as one of the ‘best value ticket’ propositions of its kind in the UK, unlocking a world of treasures and secret stories. Recognising the value and the support of its 73,000+ members, the British Museum has moved beyond a traditional, product-based membership programme to a more ‘experience’ and value-based proposition. From just £64 per person, members get free, unlimited access to exhibitions but also use of the Members’ Room and a growing programme of exclusive events and private previews. How does the museum balance the growing membership base with limited resources? How is the museum communicating with its members during these periods of closure? And what’s next for the membership offer?

This session outlines how one innovative supplier has responded to the current disruption. BRAND → MARKETING → SELLOUT Football is not the only sport that can fill Germany’s venues!
Last year’s IHF World Men's Handball Championship was co-hosted in Denmark and Germany, with the tournament setting a new spectator record at 906,283. Single game attendance reached over 19,250 at Germany's matches in the main round. Of course, having ‘two home sides’ helped this success but in a country dominated by football marketing, how did the organising committee cut through these messages to drive awareness and demand for this handball tournament. We are delighted to welcome our guest speaker and marketing expert from Germany, who will ‘lift the lid’ on the marketing strategy and communications plan which delivered this record-setting success.

INCREMENTAL OPPORTUNITIES IN TRAVEL Event travel: Is it about intent? Or ability?
Will patrons still travel for events? Has COVID changed their habits? For good? What will happen when events & travel are allowed again? Predicting the future is a tricky business. We'd even say its guesswork... but with over eighth million active users on Stay22 maps every month – and a large the proportion coming from the live event industry – we can make it an EDUCATED guess. Using empirical data collected from our ticketing industry partners, we'll share the correlations, causality and hypotheses we've seen towards explaining the current event-travel reality and try our hand at forecasting what tomorrow could look like:
• Key Learning #1: The travel behavior changes of the event-goers; • Key Learning #2: The business opportunities this change has created; • Key Learning #3: Patron’s intent to travel for events isn't the issue. It’s ability.

THE HUMAN TOUCH: DIGITAL TO ANALOGUE Supporting fans speeds their return to live events
As we emerge from the pause required by the pandemic, there will be tremendous competition for audience share and their attention. Among live event organisations in particular, those who focus on improving their outbound communication efforts will have the best opportunities for success. The ability to engage, find timely answers, complete transactions and request support via the fan’s preferred channel is now a non-negotiable component for any successful live event. In this session we will share examples of how to meet (and even exceed) customer expectations using AI-supported messaging tools for interactive search.

BUSINESS | MARKETS | ASIA Scale & Chaos: Finding the next opportunity in (or from) China
We kick off our second day with a live feed from China. During his time in the country, our guest speaker has opened a multi-purpose, NBA-standard arena in one of the smaller regional cities (population 5 million)! These days he is engaged with bringing businesses into China – and providing a conduit for business out of China. He’ll share a general overview of the nation’s ticketing landscape, touch on how Covid-19 has affected it in terms of new regulations and limitations, and then shares some insight on the current commercial landscape. The session will also explore some ideas where opportunities may be for rightsholders, either looking to bring IP into China – or selling to the growing numbers of China’s outbound tourists. With a rebound in travel, predictions are for more than 120 million trips by Chinese tourists to destinations outside of Greater China.

PIVOT TO STREAMING Live streaming: Short term fix or long term opportunity?
For discussion: Promoters have moved to streaming as one of the few ways to connect and monetise fanbases. Meanwhile plenty of ticketing companies have pivoted to streaming but is there longevity in it? Was it just a short term solution to the current events lockdown? How does the future integration of live streaming look for event ticketing, audiences and promoters? Will we see the rise of hybrid events?

LEAGUE-WIDE THINKING Many clubs. Countless voices. One selection process.
Exactly one year ago (and after a process almost as long), Norsk Toppfotball – the association of the Norwegian top league football clubs – formally appointed league-wide ticketing partner. The five-year agreement has an estimated total value of £90 million (US$117m) and encompasses circa two million tickets annually. Ten different suppliers were evaluated by the league with emphasis placed on easing the customer journey for the supporters at all of the 32 clubs in the country's top two leagues. A year on there’s a common system for all the clubs which has eased a number of operational challenges (not least the previously manual processing of away supporters for each club). When the clubs use the same system, each club now can sell digital away tickets for their own matches through their own sales system – including seat maps and tagging of each ticket in the CRM system. Taking us through the specification and selection process we welcome:

TOURING & FESTIVALS: ROUTES & RISKS Bumps in the roadmap back to live
The live music sector has been derailed by the impact of Covid-19. Artists have been stuck at home, turning to streaming for their visibility. Fans have been impacted by rescheduling, refunds and redundancies. And promoters have been hit hard – caught in the middle. This discussion explores what the roadmap back to live could (and should) look like with two leading promoter businesses:
• Where are the next potholes and blind bends? • What’s the viability of smaller-scale, socially-distanced gigs? • How will the backlog of demand and tours impact the 2021/2022 calendar? • Will pricing be impacted over the long term by Covid-19?; • Will historic ticketing data be effective in forecasting the viability of tours?; • Wait and buy late! Will we see more last-minute as ticket habits change?
Exploring these questions – and those of your own – we welcome:

MANAGING SOCIAL DISTANCING Plan how to re-open your venues and seat fans safely
3D Digital Venue has taken advantage of its knowledge about venue mapping to create a tool which allows venue managers to create multi-faceted ‘scenarios’ of their venues including the application of social distancing rules, simulation of the resultant seating layouts and, in addition, the allocation of seats to fans and season ticket-holders with user-selected business rules and pricing. The tool allows venue operators to define social distance parameters, seat groups and also define the priorities for door-specific ingress and egress. With these tools, operators can sit people safely, whilst maximising capacity and revenue.

CHANGE AS A CONSTANT Is your platform ready for the new digital reality?
The adage that “the only constant in life is change” and this has never been truer than now. Boston Consulting Group asked a key question earlier this year: “Is your technology ready for the new digital reality?” This is a great question for both customers and suppliers, both existing and new. The answer is probably not what it should be!
How do we equip – and empower – our ticketing teams to take control of ticket distribution and to engage with our audiences. Navigating through this uncertain future calls for agile development and flexible solutions. Our speakers share how software products are evolving for the future and how they are embracing new technologies to support the industry in its challenges ahead.

SURVIVE THEN THRIVE It’s Up to Us. No One is Coming to Help
“We’re now eight months into the pandemic shutdown in the world of live entertainment, and not very much has changed. In-person events are still shut down and there’s absolutely no certainty about when the doors will open again.
It’s putting unprecedented stress on our industry in every way. Organisations are pushed to the limits financially. Staff are furloughed or laid off. Talent is leaving the industry, voluntarily or otherwise. Venues are at risk of shutting down. It’s a seriously scary situation on every front.
I spend a lot of my time these days talking to people in the industry, people who are facing the crisis. I hear creativity. I hear resolve. I see people who love what they do. I see people who want to see the live business survive and thrive.
But I also hear resignation. I hear defeat. I see half-measures. And I see waiting. People waiting even though I’m not sure if they even know what they’re waiting for anymore. A vaccine? A new reopening plan from the governor?
“The truth is no one is coming to help. Survival is up to each and everyone of us. And what does this mean? Tune in to find out…”

This will be explained so that anyone easily understand and then apply.

PINCHPOINTS IN THE SALES CYCLE Ecommerce: Reimagining and removing bottlenecks

A DIFFERENT APPROACH Taking a DIY software approach to ticketing
Having evaluated various market offers of ticketing platforms, leading Dutch football club Feyenoord Rotterdam decided that it needed something else. “None of the platforms were open enough for us. We got the impression that ticketing providers just wanted the volume – and were not really interested in a true, white-label solution for us,” explains Edwin Suk, the club's CIO. For the club, re-badging the front page is not a white label solution. “Unlike clubs in the Premier League with huge broadcast deals, ticketing remains a key income stream for the club. As such, it really had our focus. We knew we wanted to be able to upgrade, to sell to groups last minute, to move people and prices around. So, we built our own project team and then we built the software. By the way, building the project team was more difficult than the software,” adds Suk. Learn more about this unusual DIY journey into an enterprise-scale, ticketing software platform project.

SUBSCRIPTION-BASED SEASON TICKETS Reimagining season tickets as a subscription model
Most football supporters are supporters for life! Why don't football clubs provide the supporters with the possibility to have a season ticket on subscription? This would be the closest thing we have seen to date of a lifetime season ticket, sold to the general public. Our speaker – an entrepreneur and business leader at a full-service, digital agency – shares thoughts and experiences on using a subscription-based model with regards to season tickets, club memberships, ticket packages and more.

LAST SHOW IN TOWN Engaging fans. But perhaps not counting on them!
This session offers an overview of one of the last UK major events to run with spectators this year – badminton’s All England Championships, hosted in Birmingham during March. We look at new ways the sport's governing body is looking to engage and energise its fans – especially in the event there’s no in-arena crowd for a while.

INNOVATION IN TIMES OF UNCERTAINTY Inspiration for ticketing from the Renaissance
First of all, let’s refresh our memories with what the Renaissance is. In effect, the Renaissance is the first period of the global innovation cycle in all of human history. The second period being la Belle-Epoque. And the third one, is right now: The Digital era. The scientific discoveries that take place during these innovation cycles bring humanity many new tools and techniques. From the Renaissance, for example, many are still used today. This is when we first started to use geometry for 3D modelling. Also, most of modern finance comes from the Renaissance: including ‘modern financial tools’, such as Venture Capital, loans, checks etc. And sponsorship took on a different approach in the Renaissance. Of course, the first sponsored events date back to Ancient Greece. But it was Cosimo de Medici who developed the family bank for all of Europe, showcasing his power through patronage and sponsorship. We can also add the compass, oil painting, astrolabe, calculus of longitude and latitude… even pocket books to the list of Renaissance innovations. But why did all this happen? And what on Earth has it got to do with the future of ticketing, live entertainment and audiences?

ARTS | DATA | INSIGHTS Strength in numbers: The value of shared audience insights
Arts and cultural organizations typically spend very little on market research and other efforts to understand their audiences. An 11-organization cohort in Philadelphia has undertaken an ambitious data-sharing project to bridge the resulting information gap. For this pilot, seven years (and running) of historical ticketing data for 11 performing arts venues in the city was uploaded, representing over 6 million tickets and US$350 million in sales. The data was standardised according to the art form presented (e.g. opera, dance, theatre) and ticket type (e.g. subscription, single ticket, group). Using advanced algorithms third-party software was used to match up patrons across The Audience Engine then updated ticket sales data nightly. All of this was done automatically without any end-user intervention or management. Each morning all of the interactive dashboards were refreshed to provide current visualizations of the latest data. Would such an effort be enough to jumpstart a business culture amongst arts organizations to craft strategy based on an understanding of, and response to, their market? In fact, the initial findings raised at least as many questions as they answered. As such, the sponsoring foundation – as well as other leading funders for the arts – are interested in continuing the study of not only the Philadelphia market, but in expanding the study to four or five other markets.

PRICING STRATEGIES Price: The most effective lever to maximise profit
The single most important strategy in managing a business is pricing power. Together with volume and costs, price is one of the only three drivers that leverage profits. However, many events managers heavily underestimate its potential. Pricing should not b a ‘one shot’ decision when organising an event. A smart and dynamic ticket pricing strategy is essential to driving profit. Many organisers simply price their event somewhere above their costs. Others look at similar events and default to that price. Ultimately, there's only one way to optimise the events´ limited capacity and maximize every customer's willingness to pay. Through advanced revenue management and value-based pricing approaches, organisers will be ready to maximise profitability.
