INNOVATIONS FROM AN HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

THE THREE-POINT SEAT BELT designed by Nils Bohlin in 1951 for Volvo (but based on his previous work for Saab). The three-point seatbelt was introduced into Volvo’s cars in 1959.

REVOLUTIONARY PRODUCTION FACILITIES in Volvo’s Kalmar och Uddevalla plants. At Volvo’s assembly plants in Kalmar and Uddevalla, instead of traditional conveyor belts, vehicles were moved by battery-driven carriers steered by wires embedded in the floor.

TURBO ENGINES had been used for many years in motorsports, but were not available to public consumers since they were difficult to maintain and unreliable, and were not fuel economical.

METHOD PAGEMapping of automotive industry companies in the Gothenburg region was carried out by Business Region Göteborg and Procero on behalf of Business Region Göteborg.

Based on a selection of SNI codes and with the inclusion of a number of additional companies, a selection of companies – that at any point during one of the years studied (2008, 2012, 2016) had 5 or more employees – was made. The reason we did not include companies with fewer than 5 employees is that very small companies often do not have websites, which makes it difficult to determine the orientation.

A review resulted in 220 companies deemed to constitute the majority of companies that can be counted towards the Gothenburg region’s automotive cluster and with significant operations in the industry.

The companies in the study are based on the companies’ establishments in the Gothenburg region. Other figures, such as turnover, are region specific (if 50% of the employees work in the region, then 50% of the turnover was included).

In order to describe the entire automotive cluster, we also included entities from academia, institutes and the public sector. However, these do not constitute a basis for financial analysis, which is only based on the list of 220 companies.

In this report we also refer to other mapping carried out which does not include the same selection of companies as selected in our own mapping.
