A Message from our Principal, Ms Pantelis

Student Progress It is important to celebrate our students’ strengths, as well as highlight areas for further development. The school will be issuing student reports on Monday 24 June. Please refer to the attached letter outlining the procedure on how to book interviews with teachers online. The interviews will take place from Monday 1 July and Tuesday 2 July. Depending on the class, there may be other opportunities to meet your child’s teacher during that week. Bookings will be available online from tomorrow- Friday 7 June from 4pm until Tuesday 25 June at 4pm.

Formative Assessment As part of our School Plan, the teachers have been focusing in the area of embedding formative assessment practices into their teaching. This allows teachers to focus on assessment to help guide future planning in their teaching. School resources have been utilised to support teachers in this area as well as implementing professional learning sessions based on formative assessment strategies.

Wonderful Opportunities Every week our students participate in a variety of sporting activities. It is great to see the team effort demonstrated by our players. Congratulations to our primary students for representing Burraneer Bay PS with pride and to the teachers who make it all possible.

Student Leadership Our Prefects have been invited to take part in a special leadership initiative. They have decided to continue to raise funds to support a child in Africa. They have developed a powerpoint presentation to show the students at both Assemblies. They are hosting a mufti day next Thursday to support their project. We are very proud of them and the leadership skills they are demonstrating. Keep it up!

Why is it important for students to get to school on time? To be part of the morning greeting

To know what’s happening during the school day

To start lessons on time and to understand what to do in class

Reinforced the importance of punctuality

Students who arrive to school on time are generally more settled and ready to learn. It’s also very important for parents to be at school on time to pick up their children. It can be very upsetting for a child if their parent is late. Students are to report immediately to their classroom teacher if their parent is not at school on time of an afternoon. If the teacher is not in their classroom, then students must report to the school office where parents will be contacted.

Kindergarten Fairy Tale Fiasco What a marvellous day our Kindergartens experienced with all the amazing activities based on popular fairy tales. The students and their teachers were all dressed up and taken to another magical day of learning at Burraneer Bay PS.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL REPORT

Interruption Free Zones

Research shows that late arrivals and interruptions have a significant impact on student engagement and achievement. Displayed on many of our classroom doors is a sign that says Interruption Free Zone 9:10-11:10am. Staff are keen to protect this time so that lessons can take place without disruptions. This allows the teachers to focus on quality teaching and students to focus on their learning. A short break for Crunch and Sip will continue, as a healthy snack during the morning session helps keep children alert and ready to learn.

What does it mean for our parents and carers? We need your support! All children must arrive at school before the 9:10 am bell to make the most of their day. To do this, children need parents and carers to make sure they are on time every day. Parents are encouraged to leave the playground when the music starts.

Please do not follow your child’s class to the room as teachers and children are preparing for learning. If you need to communicate with your child’s teacher, you are encouraged to leave a message for the teacher at the office. Please support us and try to make any appointments for your children outside of school hours. When children arrive late or leave early, they disrupt their own learning as well as the learning of every other child in their class.

Strengthening communication is an important focus. Our newsletter is the main form of communication. It is published every Thursday and is available on the school website, is delivered to inboxes to subscribed users and also sent as a SchoolEnews alert. We ask that families spend time reading the content of the newsletter as we aim to keep you as up to date as possible. Many of the queries that come through the main office have already been addressed in the newsletter or as a SchoolEnews notification.

Our SchoolEnews app allows us to remind families of events and information that is already published in the newsletter. Additional updates and reminders are also sent by the SchoolEnews app

Student Safety Student safety is always extremely important. To ensure we maintain a safe environment we would like to remind you that

Visitors and students should not be on the school grounds outside supervised times.

Supervision is from 8:40am when a teacher is rostered onto supervision duty.

The playground is not for afternoon play. Our gates are locked from 3:40pm. This is to ensure that our

school is safe, clean and staff and resources are ready for the following teaching day. We also have a

responsibility to BAC who uses our playground areas for their before and after school activities

outside school hours.

Students and carparks don’t mix. School carparks are not for parent access.

Year 3 Excursion to the Botanical Gardens Sunshine, flowers and smiling faces equalled a perfect day for the Year 3 excursion to the Botanic Gardens. Flowers were blooming here, there and everywhere! Last week was Reconciliation Week. Year 3 students participated in 3 activities with the Aboriginal Education guides from the gardens. Children learnt some animal dance movements and played games including Hunters and Gatherers and Animal Statues. They listened to a didgeridoo performance and stories about Aboriginal culture. A variety of tools and artefacts were on display. While walking through the gardens students heard all about how plants can be used for food, medicine and protection. They even saw how a banksia can be used as a hairbrush and how golden wattle can be used as soap! The Harbour Bridge was a beautiful backdrop for a picnic lunch. Many cheeky ibises wanted a snack too! After lunch students sketched the bridge, city skyline and the gardens. The guides commented on what a lovely group of students they were. Year 3 had a fantastic time!

Leadership by the Bay

The School Captains, Vice-Captains and Prefects spent the day on Wednesday at Woolooware Golf Club learning about leadership. They listened to motivational speakers talking about the qualities that strong leaders show and how they can bring about change in the world. There were 14 local primary schools and 3 high schools present and each school had to talk about what leadership looked like at their school. The leadership team from our school presented a PowerPoint explaining some of the duties they have as prefects. It was interesting to find out about programs running in other schools. The student leaders worked collaboratively to plan a project that will put into practice throughout the year. After lunch there was time to work together and discuss ideas for a project for the team to work on. They had some great ideas and will now need to refine them into a workable plan. The leadership team has organised a Pyjama Mufti Day for next Thursday - 13th June to raise money for Zilipa, the child from Tanzania who we sponsor through World Vision.
