MULTIduct™ - the fast, easy and economical way to build multiple duct banksMULTIduct™ is a multiple duct system, manufactured by CUBIS Industries, used for constructing under track or road crossings (UTX/URX), bridge crossings and buried linear routes.

Duct banks are built by connecting nominal 1 metre long sections by a steel clip. MULTIduct™, available in 4, 6 and 9 way options, is significantly stronger than conventional ducting and does not require a concrete surround or an expansive trench, resulting in cheaper installations. The product is manufactured in nitrogen foamed high density polyethylene, which offers high strength-to-weight properties, resulting in a product that has high crush resistance but can be lifted by a single person (all parts are below 25kg).

The system is completely approved by Network Rail and other European transport networks and has been used on the airport extension on Manchester Metrolink.

Network Rail use the product to build under track crossings where it is utilised to carry and protect cables that have to be routed beneath train tracks. The operator has also used the product for buried cable routes, where the entire ducting network is buried to act as a deterrent to stop motivated attempts to steal or damage cables.

BENEFITS• Strong - high crush strength.• Light weight - all parts under 25kg.• Economical - no special plant required for lifting and less

excavation due to shallower burial.• Fast - rapid installation for every application.• Environmental - HDPE material consists of 70% recycled

content. Completely recyclable.• Flexible - full range of bends and fittings.• High build quality - manufactured to ISO 9001 and ISO

14001.

APPLICATIONS• Under track crossings• Under road crossings• Buried cable routes• Linear routes• Bridge crossings• Tunnels• Station and platform renewals

THE SYSTEM• 4, 6 or 9 way options.• Each duct space is equivalent to 110mm single duct

(160mm option available in 4 way).• Each section is 1120mm long (lay length is 1070mm).• All parts manufactured in high density polyethylene.• Units have socket (female) and spigot (male) joints and

are connected by clip-fix.• Accessories to manage common bends, duct

configurations and for interfaces with traditional single ducts and access chambers.

High Speed Two

HS2 has been widely reported in the news recently. It is a new dedicated passenger rail link that will run between London and Birmingham in the first phase and then extend to Manchester and Leeds later.

Building a railway on this scale takes years, just in the planning and development stages alone, and the consultation process which identified the fixed core alignment of the route has just finished.

The hybrid bill is now being prepared which will determine the land requirement. The construction phase will not begin until around 2017 and this is only provided all the complicated negotiations, political and engineering processes can be navigated successfully. Completion of the first phase is expected by 2026.

In terms of the big picture for the construction industry, HS2 is huge. It is likely to follow the completion of the Crossrail and Thameslink projects and will provide both continuity of work and the retention of skills which contribute significantly to the economy.

The longer term strategy is to extend the line to Scotland, although the Department for Transport has yet to commit to this, but upgrades of existing lines and routes are already being planned. London to Scotland in 2 hours 15 minutes is at the moment only a dream but it is sure

to come one day. The experiences of other high speed international rail routes have shown regional economic benefits, such as the route between Paris and Marseille. Spain is fast developing its high speed rail infrastructure and Madrid to the Mediterranean by train will soon be a possible, albeit expensive, commuter route.

Committing to build the line through to Manchester and Leeds will ensure HS2 delivers economic and social returns for Britain. It will bring investment and jobs to the area and increase connectivity for people and businesses across the country. It will also give a boost to our growing freight industry as HS2 will allow more capacity on existing lines and take some of the stress off our congested roads and provide a more efficient and environmentally friendly option.

So what does all this mean for Burdens? Well, our products and services are closely aligned to supporting the rail sector. Burdens Rail is growing exponentially in the current market by providing specialist knowledge and products, not only to key strategic projects such as Crossrail and Thameslink but also local stations and Permanent Way. The rail

sector provides assured continuity of long term growth and investment, so we can have confidence in developing our business accordingly. We are building our expertise and reputation by working closely with the manufacturers and contractors to provide new and innovative product solutions with a professional logistics capability.

King’s Cross transformation

In 1852, King’s Cross station opened as the London Terminus for the Great Northern Railway.

Despite its historical and strategic importance, this Victorian station had never really been upated or modernised. The area was drab and the buildings were slowly deteriorating.

In 2006 planning consent was secured for the redevelopment of the station as part of a £2.3bn upgrading and redevelopment of the King’s Cross area. Work on the station has now totally changed its appearance - it has become revitalised, so leaving a quality legacy for the future.

New platforms, improved passenger facilities, refurbished roof and the number and quality of trains has dramatically increased the efficiency of the station and also added to the capacity, punctuality and safety of passengers.

A new, modern concourse was completed in 2012 with a showpiece front plaza highlighting the original Victorian façade, still in the process of construction. The external façade still incorporates the 3 sided clock tower which remains the a striking feature of this structure. This development will eventually create a major new public space for London.

The King’s Cross area is steeped in history with links to Boadicea and the Roman occupation and her body is reputed to be buried somewhere under platforms 9 and 10. Modern day fiction refers to the platform 9 and ¾ and there are many

references to King’s Cross station in books and films. Unusually there is even a platform 0 which was added in 2010.

Burdens are pleased to have been involved with this project. We have supplied various parts of the work and several contractors but mainly Balfour Beatty. We have also supplied the sub-contractors for the new ticket hall and BAM Nuttall for the works behind the station (called the redevelopment of the Old Potato Market and the original freight depot area).

The King’s Cross area is now almost unrecognisable from a few years ago and is attracting new investment with offices and research centres. There are new paved areas and water fountains and access to the Regents Canal provides lots of leisure opportunities and relaxing walks amid the history which has been preserved for future generations. Google have just announced that their new UK HQ will be situated there so the continued growing prosperity of the area is assured. Railway stations and their surrounding areas may not be traditionally regarded as places of interest but this is certainly one station to enjoy such an experience.

Burdens deliver high tech track stability solution to Newcastle Metro Link

Early in February, Burdens Rail were called upon to provide an 800m run of Hydrotex to support the trackbed on a Bam Nuttall Permanent Way installation on the Metro Link in Byker, Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Manufactured by Terram, a division of Fiberweb Geosynthetics Ltd., Hydrotex consists of a central filter media thermally bonded to two opposing needle-punched nonwovens (robust filters) to create a geocomposite with sufficient strength and protection to be durable to the abrasion and point loading of ballast.

The traditional use of a sand blanket in railway trackbed utilises a sub-ballast and/or a graded-sand layer to prevent the upward movement of fine sub-grade particles, while allowing effective drainage and dissipation of pore water pressure. Hydrotex offers this solution in one geocomposite.

Hydrotex is strong but flexible, allowing the composite to conform to the excavated formation so that no voids exist below the filter media for the development of pockets of slurry, resulting in an unstable trackbed.

Due to the tight time frame it was necessary for Burdens to make the delivery of the rolls of Hydrotex at a pre-agreed time, out of normal trading hours.

Ian Jordan, Bam Nuttall Site Agent commented: “We were very pleased with the service we received from Burdens’ Blaydon depot as they kept us fully informed about our delivery. We

required the product delivered in a tight time frame and Burdens were able to arrange with the supplier to have the product on site on Sunday and the installation went according to plan.”

Ian also commented on another benefit of installing the product: “Hydrotex was very easy to lay as it is a lot lighter than other Permanent Way geocomposites which require special equipment to install due to the excessive weight of the roll.”

The London Olympics and the Diamond Jubilee made 2012 a year to remember. Crossrail also reached a milestone in 2012 with 20 million working hours in the construction phase so far. In 2013, the tunnel boring machines ( TBMs ) are making steady and good progress deep under central London with the eastern section due to reach Canary Wharf this spring, the western machines having passed through Bond Street already. At the BFK JV offices at Westbourne Park there is a visual virtual road map showing the real-time progress of the TBM chomping away underground and was under Hyde Park when the Burdens Rail Manager, Martin Trivess-Smith visited their offices recently.

The final main central station package has been let and tier 1 contract awards are now over £5.5bn with Crossrail estimating that it is generating enough work for the equivalent of 55,000 full time jobs with contractors and the full supply chain.

Burdens is contributing to some of this work and we are currently working with up to 30 contractors, with sales to various contracts and also negotiations continuing with the main contractors and sub-contractors for all the main sites.

The Burdens Rail office at Tadley is providing a central control point to manage this business which involves some large volume orders and sometimes complex logistical solutions. Manufacturers are working closely with us on some special enquiries, including stainless steel channel drainage and gratings and deep excavation drainage with tailored size shafts to accommodate the complex design tolerances.

Burdens Rail was involved with Canary Wharf station during its initial phase to construct a giant underground concrete box ready to receive the TBM this spring. Some of you may have seen the fascinating television programme which documented this work and demonstrated clearly the vastness of this project. After the TBM has passed through Canary Wharf, work will start on the construction and fit-out of the upper sections which will be finished in 2015, some 3 years ahead of the actual station being used for passenger services.

By the time Phyllis, the TBM arriving from the west later this year, reaches Farringdon station, the new ticket halls, station passenger walking tunnels and connections with the surface levels will be completed. When Crossrail opens fully in 2018, Farringdon will be one of the busiest interchanges in Britain, linking other lines and the underground system. All the central

station areas will have modern open space/public realm areas to improve the appearance of the approaches, complete with new trees, sitting areas and meeting places.

The North Woolwich ‘Box’ has recently been completed 4 months ahead of schedule and is so huge that the central tower building in Canary Wharf could be laid inside. It will shortly be the crossover point for 2 more TBMs, Sophia and Mary. There is also currently some discussion regarding the funding of the station fit-out and regeneration scheme (including commercial and retail) that will be built in conjunction with the 585 houses Berkeley Homes are building later this year.

Laing O’Rourke has just started on site at Custom House station in London’s docklands alongside the Excel Centre. Custom House station is a modular construction and is being built largely off-site. The roof will be made of a plastic called EFTE which is similar to that used on the Eden Project.

So plenty going on!

2013 sees the Crossrail project construction phase reaching its peak. Burdens Rail is ideally placed to service all parts of this project with strategically placed branches around London. Wolseley Utilities trading as Burdens, are FORS members, our vehicles are fully Crossrail compliant and drivers Crossrail trained. We are working hard with the contractors and manufacturers to provide the best service and products and our flexible approach together with excellent logistics capabilities is proving a winning formula, with most of the contractors trusting us with their Civils orders based on this solid performance. There is a wide range of news and information on this significant rail infrastructure project on the Crossrail website - www.crossrail.co.uk.

Rail project updateThe Burdens Rail office is able to draw on Burdens’ vast civil engineering industry experience as we constantly review suppliers and manufacturers to ensure all Burdens depots are stocked with the right materials at the right price.

Burdens’ stock range includes many Network Rail Approved products, including geotextiles, geogrids, cable troughs, track ballast, copings and oversail blocks.

The following project list highlights some of the leading rail contractors and the products that have in many cases been delivered within challenging time restrictions.

FEATURED RAIL PROJECT: Chadwell Heath Station AFACONTRACTOR: Concept Rail Limited

Burdens Rail supplied Concept Rail Ltd., on the Chadwell Heath station refurbishment, platform upgrade, bridge erection and access for all with copings, tactile paving, ducting, bricks and blocks at this space constrained site.

The existing bridge at Chadwell Heath station was removed and a new one erected incorporating a lift to each platform. Platform copings have been renewed and tactile paving installed to every platform.

The large civils works completed within the small confines of the platforms made it a very challenging project. Many factors were taken into account when completing the works which included OHLE and train movements. All staff were PTS trained and safety was paramount to the project.

Logistically the site was very challenging - contractors were only able to transport plant and materials during given dates in possessions.

Planning was key to enable the momentum on site to achieve the required milestones each week. A vast range of skills were required to complete the platform lift shaft brickwork and civils related works, along with all enabling and temporary works for the project.

RAIL PROJECTS IN BRIEFPROJECT: BLACKFRIARS STATIONCONTRACTOR: DMC RAIL Aggregates, copings and tactile paving was supplied for this landmark station upgrade. Due to the city location and both space and time constraints, Burdens Rail accommodated weekend and night time deliveries.
