At its simplest, the parable is a metaphor or a simile drawn from nature or common life, arresting the hearer by its vividness or strangeness, and leaving the mind in sufficient doubt about its precise application to tease it into active thought. - C.   3. 3. Jesus used the parables in order to keep outsiders from understanding his teaching about Gods reign. Jesus use of the parables was meant to fulfill Isaiahs prophecy that the people would deliberately harden their hearts so that they would in no way understand the parables.
