Labels … Who Needs Them?

When it comes to determining what product we are choosing, labels are necessary; but when it comes to looking at our fellow human beings, labels can be damaging and divisive. We have had the tendency to label those around us according to various criteria which makes us “different” from them. Often they are labels based on racial, economical, political or theological differences, and often according to sexual orientation. Think about how we typically respond when we see someone enter a room. It is almost as if we are pre-programmed to do a quick scan, consult our mental files regarding what we might know about that person. Then we make a judgement and assign a “label.” It seems only natural to want to organize things like that and to put them in our little “drawers.” “She is this kind of person; “or “he is a _____________.” You fill in the blanks. This is not to shame us, but to make us aware of the danger of thinking as the

world thinks, and judging as the world judges.

Looking honestly at a picture of humanity, we are all labeled “sinners.” We are all part of a fallen world. Thankfully, we have found a Savior who didn’t “label” us, but instead loves us. Looking at our fellow human beings through the eyes of love and compassion, involves us in the redemptive work of a compassionate savior. In Christ, we can all have a new name, a new address, a new description. We are all redeemed by grace! This new “us” is not a “label” like we might ascribe to others, but a new identity. We

belong to Christ!

Good Morning,

Last Monday, we had an engineer come inspect a building at the church camp where I serve on the Board of Directors. The outside wall of the beloved “Opry House” is noticeably separating from the floor in a couple of places and we are afraid it’s almost beyond repair. The first thing he did was examine the

foundation and inspect where the wall was separating. He concluded that if the foundation was good the building was salvageable. It might take a little extra work – we just need to make sure we reattach the

structure to its foundation.

Many Christians might be able to relate to this building. They started out right but, over the years, their lives have become separated from the foundation. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said his teachings were a solid foundation for our Christian lives: If we faithfully put His teaching into practice, we are like the wise man who built his house on a rock – we can withstand any storm. However, if we don’t we are like the foolish man

who built his house on the sand. (Matthew 7:24-27).

In 1 Corinthians 3, we read that Christ is our foundation. It is true that over the years, many of us lose sight of this and start living lives in conflict with His teaching. But like the Opry House, there is still hope; we just need to put in a little extra work and ensure we are attached to the firm foundation of Jesus Christ. Before the storms hit, let’s all make sure our lives are

built on the solid rock of Jesus Christ.

In Him,

Luke
