AN EVENING TO WRITE HOME ABOUT

Last Tuesday Rotarians had a unique evening with Khallifa (Head) of Delhi Gharanaof Hindustani Classical Music, Ustad Iqbal Ahmed Khan, a vocalist, a musicologist, aSufi and above all a human being par excellence.

The topic of the evening was thegenius of Hazrat Amir Khusro, a Sufisaint, soldier, statesman, musician, poet and inventor. Hazrat AmirKhusro was the soulmate andforemost mureed (disciple) ofDelhis patron saint HazratNizamuddin Auliya. Son of a HinduMother and a Turkish father AmirKhusros contribution to Indian musicand poetry is unsurpassed even 700

    years after his demise.

Ustad Iqbal Ahmed Khan paid rich tribute to this icon of composite culture by tracingthe history of Delhi Gharana that, according to Iqbal, was founded by Hazrat AmirKhusro. Ustad Iqbal is a formal disciple of Khwaja Hassan Sani Nizami . A directdescendent of Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya and Gaddi-nashin (Heir) of DargahNizamuddin Auliya. Being a musicologist and responsible for not only preserving therich tradition of Indian classical music, Iqbal is also keen to pass on this preciousheritage to the coming generations. He imparts training to several young students ofmusic. Some of the most prominentname in Indian music owe their musicalknowledge to Ustad Iqbal.

Ustad Iqbal Ahmed Khan brought outbeautifully how Hazrat Amir Khusrocreated a unique synthesis of Hindustaniclassical music with Persian and Arabicmusic. He demonstrated by singingbandishs in Raag Poorvi, Yaman andBhairavi composed by Amir Khusro. TheUstad maintains that Hazrat Amir Khusro considered to be the father of Qawwali, was the first one to base Qawwali singing on the lines of Hindu Sankirtan and thuscreating a new style of devotional music that was different from the original PersianSama. Emphasizing that Amir Khusro was a great supporter of composite culture ofIndia the Ustad told his audience that the legendary poet wrote in Hindvi which wasprimarily Khaddi Boli based on Brij Bhasha rather than in Sanskritized Hindi orPersianised Urdu. To this day Qawalli singers of this sub-continent revel in singingHazrat Amir Khusros compositions that are popular with the masses. Ustad Iqbalgave the examples of Chhap Tilak Sab Chheeni, Toh Se Naina Milaye Ke, or SabSakhiyon Mein Choonar Meri Maili, Ab Ke Phagun Rang De Gulabi.

An evening that elevated the Rotarians spiritually, on the eve of Janam Ashtmi, wasappropriately concluded with a Mira Bhajan in Maand popular raga of Rajasthan. Itwas truly a tribute to the genius of Hazrat Amir Khusro by one of his descendents whohas not forgotten the lessons of composite culture propagated by the Darvesh.

    CHHENI EXPRESS DERAILS

This review comes with a warning - it is written by a hard coreSRK fan who from DDLJ times has being seeing SRK films firstday first show!

What a SRK film was : Deep romance always dil se, warmrelationships, emotional hero who stood for good values, strongstory and character progression, love which was generous and

graceful, moments of awakening, soft music, et al.

What this SRK film is : bantering, travesty of relationships, wimpish hero, no story, no characters only caricatures, hamming meaningless meandering in the name of love and loudcacophony as music !

SRK and Rohit Shetty even indulge in self deprecating humor, with Deepika asking SRK if he is older than 50, but these shotsat creating forced laughter fall flat because there is no story, noplot just a series of illogical happenings and cardboardcharacters. SRK tries hard, in fact too hard, and you watch hisfacial contortions and neck muscles going into spasmsbut nothing moves the audience. The heart bleeds for an actor

who used to be effortless and chose stories which touched ourheartstrings. First day, first show at Odeon elicited no whistles,no clapping, no cheering and pathetic laughter from theaudience. Maybe the audience is changing... I asked two younggirls if they were watching the first show for SRK and bothscreamed denial... One was a Deepika fan and the other aRohit Shetty fan who was angry at him for not taking Salman!

Would Like Rohit Shetty to answer the following questions:

    1. Why does SRK not runaway from the train itself? The moviecould end in 15 minutes!2. Why is he shown as a complete wimp who cranes his faceand neck muscles all the time?

    3. Women being bartered in marriage is tragedy not comedy andthat she still needs a wimp to rescue her from a gorilla istravesty. Why?4. Why is SRK a halwai? How the mighty have fallen!5. Did your best friend Ajay Devgun bribe you to make mockeryof SRK?

And suggestions for SRK, which he will never heed -

Please get back to doing films with sound scripts, well meaning, mature characters who are firmly etched, with older heroineswho don't poke fun about your age. Please grow up becauseDDLJ happened more than 20 years ago and the audienceshave grown up. Your diehard fans are older and greying andwould love to see you in serious films. I read a recent Vir

Sanghvi article on SRK proclaiming that SRK no longer caresabout what others think of him, if that is true then an intelligent, smart and lovable actor will start losing it.

We miss the SRK of Swades, Veer Zara, Chak De!
