Well it has been a very busy two months at Ozsports HQ with the team very busy preparing to air our

new sports show The OzsportsInsider which will air every week on the Ozsports website and on

YouTube and Facebook.

We are very excited to have Sportys Bar & Arena at the Arkaba Hotel in Fullarton in South Australia. A great venue to watch

your favourite sports with mates or enjoy a meal and entertainment.

It has also been very busy in the world of sports with the Australian Men’s and Women’s Cricket Teams in England for the

for the Ashes Test series.

I have not had a chance to take a breath with the return Ashes series in Australia in commencing in November in Brisbane

Queensland is just around the corner and the 2013 & 2014 Hyundai A– League Season almost upon us. I have hardly had a

chance to catch up on all the news from the world of sports.

The Ozsports Crew and Myself have been settling into our new digs at Sportys Bar & Arena at the Arkaba Hotel in Fullarton

SA, Australia. The new home of OzsportsInsider very excited a great venue to watch your favourite sports and enjoy a meal

or a few quite drinks with mates and don’t forget the great entertainment they have at Sportys Bar & Arena.

On a sour note for every Aussie Rules Fan especially if you are a fan of the mighty Bombers ( Essendon Football Club). And I

will put my hand up and say I am a fan of the Mighty Bombers but I won’t hold it to high of for long. With the Australian

Football League & Australian Sports Anti Doping Authority I (ASADA) investigating the Essendon Football Club for alleged

illegal use of banned drugs.

Growing up within a South Australian Football League Club with a family member involved in the junior development

squads and being an Aussie kid it was natural that I would follow this SANFL Club and before the Adelaide Crows came

along I was an Essendon Football Club (Bombers) supporter. And The players and coaches could do no wrong.

I thought illegal use of drugs only happened sadly in cycling you wish it did not. Riders you look up to and stay up late every

July for the Tour de France. One of my favourite riders a South Australian Stuart O’Grady who used to ride for Orica

GreenEDGE coming out after the 2013 Tour de France and admitted using illegal substances. I feel so disillusioned with cy-

cling and Aussie Rules.

My favourite player at the Bombers James Hird after retiring from playing went onto coaching the Bombers. This player I

grew up watching every Saturday to be told and have him admit he was involved in the drug scandal at Essendon Football

Club shatters my view of James Hird. I thought when he was playing he could do no wrong just win games for the Bombers.

This whole incident has tarnished the greatest game Aussie Rules. The national game of Australia. I feel sorry for the Essen-

don fans who I feel have been let down the players, sponsors and especially their fans. I would like to know how many of

them will be renewing their memberships next season.

We will have more on the situation at Essendon Football Club on the Ozsports Online Network and what penalty's will be

handed to the club and James Hird.

Until next time, enjoy your sports

Cheers

THE

BATTLE

FIELD The Australian squad faces its toughest

challenge yet– England on tour for

the Ashes. Can the Baggy Green prevail?

Weeks out from the commencement of the Investec Ashes

Series in England Australia have given the coach of the Aus-

tralian Men’s cricket team his marching orders replacing Ar-

thurs with Darren Lehmann who is the current Queensland

Bulls coach in the Australian domestic cricket series.

Arthur was appointed in November 2011 and since that time

Australia has won 10 of 19 Tests, 18 of 39 ODIs and 7 T20s.

CA CEO James Sutherland said:

“This has been a difficult decision to make but one that we

feel is necessary. We are looking to establish a high perform-

ing Australian cricket team that is consistent over a period of

time. To achieve that we need all the parts moving in the re

right direction. Recent on-field results have been too incon-

sistent.

“Discipline, consistency of behaviour and accountability for

performance are all key ingredients that need to improve.

And we see that the head coach is ultimately responsible for

that.

“The Cricket Australia Board decided on the 23rd of June that

Mickey Arthur should not continue as head coach of the Aus-

tralian cricket team. In taking this decision, the Board accept-

ed the recommendation to make an immediate change as

being in the best interest of the team.

“The timing is far from ideal less than three weeks out from

an Ashes series, but we didn’t feel we could sit back and

hope things would change. We need to tackle the critical

issues that go to the heart of a high performing team envi-

ronment. We firmly believe that the decisions made be for

the best.

“Mickey Arthur was advised of the Board’s decision in per-

son on the 23rd of June 2013 in person yesterday by CA’s

Executive General Manager Team Performance Pat Howard.

While is was clearly a very difficult decision, we take this

moment to acknowledge Mickey’s passion and commitment

to Australian cricket team and thank him for all his hard

work and efforts,” Sutherland said.

Mickey Arthur responded to his sacking as Australian Coach

saying:

“Naturally I’m very disappointed with how this has all ended.

I certainly wanted to see the job through but I accepted that

the team hasn’t been completely galvanised under my lead-

ership and our performance have been inconsistent.

“I’m certainly a believer in good culture and traditions much

like all Australians and feel we were starting to get a shift in

the right direction. We certainly need the team to be abso-

lutely unified if we’re any chance of beating the English.

“I will take some time out with family and friends and reflect

on this and hope to continue my career in cricket coaching. I

am passionate about it and, like all Australians, I want to see

us succeed on and off the field. It has been a very challenging

18 months and I think the future is bright for Australian

cricket. I have built some wonderful relationships over the

period and I genuinely care about the team and wish them

all the best in the up and coming series.”

Sutherland welcomed Lehmann on his appointment as the

new head coach of the Australian team.

“Darren Lehmann has been appointed as the new Australian

head coach. He has had outstanding success in a short time

with the Queensland Cricket winning the Bupa Sheffield

Shield, Ryobi One-Day Cup and KFC T20 Big Bash League all

within the last two years. He will be contracted until June

2016.”

“The Board considered him the outstanding candidate to

drive the performance improvement the team needs and to

take it to the one ranking in all formats of the game. No-one

is underestimating the task at hand but we believe he is the

right man for the job. It is up to the players to respond under

his leadership and demonstrate their commitment to a suc-

cessful Australian team.”

Page 7: 4th quarter julyaugust 2013 edition

At the same time the Australian Cricket Team were going

through the transition of head coaches

The Australian captain Michael Clarke stepped down as a se-

lector of the team.

“Michael first approached Pat Howard in April after the recent

Indian series and requested to stand down as a selector so

that he could focus on his team’s and his own preparation to

play international cricket. This change will allow Michael to

focus his primary responsibilities as a player and as a and a

captain.

“The board unanimously supported Michael’s request and he

will naturally continue to be heavily consulted by the National

Selection Panel (NSP) on all team selection issues,” Sutherland

said.

Stage 21 - As it happened

After claiming his first Tour de France victory on Sunday, Kenyan-born Briton

Chris Froome labelled the historic evening finish as near "perfection".

But in the back of his mind, he knew there was one missing element - that

being the presence of his mother Jane who died five years ago of cancer.

The podium finishers: Race winner Chris Froome of Britain, Nairo Quintana

of Colombia (L) and Joachim Rodriguez (R) of Spain. Photo: AP

It was to her that Froome dedicated his victory, sealed when finished on Sun-

day's stage in the peloton in 128th place with his six remaining teammates

around him - Australian Richie Porte, Spaniard David Lopez, Belarussian Kan-

stantsin Siutsou and Britons Peter Kennaugh, Geraint Thomas and Ian

Stannard

Shortly before Froome was presented with the yellow jersey, the Eiffel Tower

and Arc de Triomphe were illuminated as a tribute to this 100th Tour.

Darkness then fell as the presentations began, with German Marcel Kittel

(Argos-Shimano) the first to step up to the podium for winning the final

133.5km stage from Versailles to Paris in a sprint from German Andre Greipel

(Lotto-Belisol) and Briton Mark Cavendish (Omega-Pharma-Lotto).

Stage winner Marcel Kittel celebrates on the podium on the Champs-Elysees.

Then came the presentation for the winning team - the Saxo-Tinkoff line-up of

former Tour winner Alberto Contador and Australian Michael Rogers, fol-

lowed by Slovakian Peter Sagan (Cannondale) to receive the green jersey as

winner of the points competition, and then the revelation of the Tour, Colom-

bian Nairo Quintana (Movistar) who won the red and white polka dot jersey

as King of the Mountains and white jersey as best young rider.

Finally came Froome's ultimate moment of glory, just as the Arc de Triomphe

was again lit up in the yellow representative of the race winner's jersey.

After receiving one of world sport's most pres-

tigious winner's garments, Froome, 28, was

then joined by Quintana and Spaniard Joaquim

Rodriguez (Katusha) who finished second and

third overall to him at 4mins 20secs and 5mins

04 secs respectively for the playing of God Save

the Queen.

"It was really an exceptional Tour with a fight to the end," Froome began,

addressing the crowd in French. He then switched to English to honour his

mother, saying: "I would like to dedicate this win to my mother. Without her

encouragement to follow my dreams, I would probably be at home watching

this event on TV. It's a great shame she never got to come and see the Tour.

She would have been so emotional and proud this evening."

Froome then thanked his teammates, including Australian Richie Porte, say-

ing: "This amazing journey would not have been possible" without them. He

also thanked the Team Sky management and staff for believing in and sup-

porting him, and finally his fiancee Michelle Cound who watched on.

FINAL RESULTS

The stage, raced in humid and hot weather, began with the traditional pag-

eantry of photo opportunities featuring the wearers of the four key jerseys.

From Versailles, the stage headed south and turned left before heading north

and towards Paris, with the peloton riding at a slow and relaxed pace.

But the pace picked up, as the peloton crossed the Pont de Billancourt, turned

right down Avenue de New York alongside the River Seine towards the Pont

Alexandre III and then Pont du Caroussel before entering the first of 10 seven

kilometre circuits on the Champs Elysees at Rue de Rivoli.

Page 9: 4th quarter julyaugust 2013 edition

It was there that Froome, in a touching gesture, beckoned his

wingman and roommate, Porte, to the front of the peloton for

the honour of leading it on to the finishing circuit to the cheers

of the thousands of fans who lined the famous cobblestoned

boulevard that is synonymous with a Tour finale.

Almost simultaneously, as they raced up to the Arc de Tri-

omphe for the first time came the roar of seven jets from the

Patrouille de France - the French Air Force's precision aero-

batic team - as they left a trail of red, white and blue plumes

of smoke in recognition of their national colours.

For Porte and Froome the moment seemingly startled them,

as Froome spoke to Porte and pointed to skies, prompting

both to laugh out loud.

Then as the sun began to gradually dip towards its inevitable

setting behind the Arc de Triomphe the race proper began for

final stage honours.

Over the ensuing 10 laps of the seven kilometre circuit, nu-

merous riders tried their best to force an upset and win the

stage by either soloing to the line or outsprinting a breakaway

group. There were moments of drama. Cavendish flatted with

52km to go and had to chase furiously through the team cars

to catch the peloton at 50kmh. Dutchman Lieuwe Westra

(Vacansoleil) abandoned with 38km to go due to a chest infec-

tion - so close yet so far.

Cavendish' teammates looked primed to set the British cham-

pion up for his fifth consecutive win on the Champs Elysees,

but as the peloton took the tricky sweeping right hand bend

with 400m to go, Kittel was ideally placed and had the dis-

tance he needed to claim his fourth win for the Tour.

"I'm very very proud about what we achieved here - on what I

achieved here - in the sprint," Kittel said afterwards. "For me,

it's just to go and win as many sprints as I can and I was in

great shape. I had a great team and we showed what we are

capable of. That was the most important thing."

Overall standings after the 21st and final stage of the Tour de

France, a 133.5km ride from Versailles to Paris on Sunday:

V8′s Motorsports

On a day of a high drama at the sell-out event in Adelaide, van Gisbergen was taken to the Erebus Motorsport garage for a post race television interview where he was forced to endure the uncomfortable stares of the team that threatened to take legal action to stop him from racing yesterday.

No words were exchanged between van Gisbergen and his former team but the mood in the garage, where Channel 7 had set up a makeshift studio, was tense with several Erebus em-ployees walking over and staring down the shock winner.

Van Gisbergen yesterday became the first non Ford Perfor-mance Racing (FPR) or Triple Eight Race Engineering driver to win a race for 15 months, with the controversial Kiwi silencing his long line of knockers in a crushing win in front of 95,000 people in Adelaide.

Scoring pole position with a breakneck blast around the brutal street track, the 23-year-old fended off a late challenge from Whincup to score his third ever race win and cap off a contro-versial return to racing after walking out on Stone Brothers Racing (now Erebus) mid-contract to later sign with Tekno Au-tosport.

Van Gisbergen's walk-out was vindicated yesterday with the man dubbed a turncoat scoring a remarkable victory while his former team struggled with Lee Holdsworth the best of the Erebus drivers back in 17th place on a disappointing day for the three Mercedes cars.

"I am happy to talk about the racing and it has been both great and overwhelming," van Gisbergen said.

"It is up there with the other wins.

"With everything that has gone on, it is great just to get out there and go racing.

"I enjoyed that so much and the car was just fantastic."

Van Gisbergen was the fastest man on track all day and looked to be well in control following the final round of pit-stops with a commanding 6-second lead over Whincup.

But a safety car on lap 65, prompted by Alex Davison's high-speed crash into a concrete wall, stole his advantage and forced him into a fierce fight with Whincup over the final 13 laps.

"I am so stoked to win ... I was able to get off the line today which was awesome," van Gisbergen said.

"Mark (Winterbottom) passed me but I was able to get by him. It was a tough race but I had good speed.

"I ended up behind Jamie and that was tough. My last stop was shorter and we got a gap and managed it.

"I think they short filled in their first stop and we were able to find time with a shorter fill and jump them in the next one.

"It was quite tense after the safety car but it looked like there was a bit of action back there and I was able to get away."

Whincup failed to hunt down van Gisbergen but helped Red Bull Racing Australia to a remarkable V8 debut with the four-time champion finishing second and his teammate Craig Lowndes third.

Lowndes won the first race of the weekend and was able to fight his way to third to leave the first round of the champion-ship holding the series lead.

"We didn't qualify well," Lowndes said yesterday.

"But it was nice to be able to fight our way back up there and score a podium.

"All-in-all, it was a great weekend and it is nice to be able to leave here with a good haul of points."

SHANE van Gisbergen came face-to-face with the V8 Supercars team he walked out on moments after shocking the sport he almost quit by storming home to steal a spectacular Clipsal 500 win from reigning champion Jamie Whincup.

Debutants Nissan and Mercedes struggled to match it with old stagers Holden and Ford with James Moffatt the best of the new manufacturers, scoring 13th place in his Nissan Motorsport Altima.

WELCOME to the big time, boys. V8 Supercar newcomers

Nissan and Mercedes left the track a little worse for wear and hot under the bonnet after a tough Clipsal 500 initiation.

Todd and Rick Kelly's Nissan Altimas returned to the garage banged-up from separate crashes in Race 2, while teammate Michael Caruso was forced to retire after 27 laps because of heat and gearbox problems.

James Moffat was the best-placed Nissan in 13th yesterday, but things weren't as good for Mercedes.

Maro Engel failed to finish both races because of throttle re-sponse issues - and even missed the start of Race 2 yesterday when he was forced into the pits after the warm-up.

Tim Slade lasted 32 laps before his team conceded problems with the car's heat sensor were no longer safe, leaving Lee Holdsworth as Mercedes's sole finisher in 17th place.

"We kept going out there to see if we could continue to run, the more track time the better but we couldn't overcome the concern safely enough," Erebus Racing chief executive Ryan Maddison said.

Despite failing to get anywhere near a top-10 placing on de-but, Maddison said the weekend had been valuable.

"It's very hard to keep your emotions or expectations in check because as soon as you see those (time) mo tors, you always want to be higher," he said.

"(But) we came here with the expectation of taking three cars home straight and getting as much track time as we could, and I think we ticked both of those boxes fairly successfully. There was a lot of public ex-pectation on us to perform . . . Aussies seem to love under-dogs and right now we're definitely the underdog."

Nissan's Michael Caruso suffered from the heat when his in-ternal cool-suit failed.

The team poured ice down his vest and smashed two of his car's windows to improve air flow but he was forced to retire when his gearbox failed.

"Once we got to that point I knew it was going to be hard but ultimately what stopped us was when we lost fourth gear," Caruso said.

"When fourth gear's not there, it doesn't matter I guess."

Caruso said both Jack Daniel's Racing and Norton 360 Racing could leave Adelaide content.

"Qualifying 13th yesterday just outside the top-10 is pretty respectable," he said.

Doing it for J-Mac: Power

romp to big win over Giants

Brad Ebert is chaired from the ground after his 100th game.

PORT ADELAIDE crushed Greater Western Sydney by 56

points in a match that was literally a matter of life and death

on Saturday night. The Power honoured their former team-

mate John McCarthy with a 19.20 (134) to 11.12 (78) victory

at AAMI Stadium.

Port vice-captain Brad Ebert epitomised a night of high emo-

tion when, after kicking the match-sealing goal, he repeated-

ly kissed the black arm-band he wore in respect for his great

mate McCarthy.

Moving tributes were held pre-match for McCarthy, who

died at a Las Vegas casino complex last September while on

an end of season trip with some Port Adelaide teammates.

McCarthy’s Victorian-based family were among the 25,122-

strong crowd.

Following a moving tribute shared by that crowd before the

Power players ran through a banner jointly acknowledging

Ebert’s milestone and McCarthy, and a minute’s silence, the

business of a football match got underway.

The Power were sluggish to begin with and conceded four of

the first five goals as the Giants opened up an 11-point buffer

at the first change.

But Port responded quickly and effectively settled the match

with a 15 minute surge in the second quarter which reaped

six consecutive goals.

Utility Justin Westhoff was best afield with five goals, Chad

Wingard booted three and experienced trio Ebert, Travis

Boak and Kane Cornes formed an effective midfield.

from the match.

Port’s second term scoring spree – holding GWS scoreless in

the process – allowed the home side to take a 25-point break

at half time.

GWS were made able to stay in the game by virtue of the

Power’s seven consecutive points in the third term.

It left the crowd restless for a circuit-breaker, but it came

with the Giants’ 2012 #1 draft pick Lachie Whitfield booting

his career-first goal.

But it was young pocket rocket Jake Neade who combined

with fellow indigenous footballer Chad Wingard to give Port

Adelaide another spurt heading into the final change.

Creating opportunities seemingly from nothing Neade twice

dished the ball to Wingard in two separate plays to deliver

the latter’s second and third goals of the evening.

A string of five majors after three quarter time put the result

beyond doubt; the Power’s score of 19.20 (134) a point high-

er than its Round 1 total against Melbourne.

Port Adelaide now enjoys a long break of seven days before

its next match against Adelaide in Balfours Showdown

XXXIV.

Commonwealth Games. From winning that highly sought after

gold medal, to sharing the limelight in the Opening Ceremony

with the world’s greatest athletes, or holding your sporting

heroes shoes while they compete… It will be an event where

anything is possible.

The Commonwealth Games bring together the members of the Commonwealth of Nations in the an effort to raise the bar of sport for all humanity and a level playing field where athletes compete in a spirit of friendship and fair play.

Although there are 54 members of the Commonwealth of Na-tions, 71 teams participate in the Commonwealth Games as a number of British overseas territories, Crown dependencies, and island states compete under their own flag including the four Home Nations of the United Kingdom – England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland which send separate teams.

Emblem unveil heralds great Gold

Coast 2018 Commonwealth

Games

4 April 2018

The unveiling of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games

emblem at Broadwater Parklands today has set the course for

an inspiring five year journey until the Opening Ceremony on

4 April, 2018.

Commonwealth Games Minister Jann Stuckey said the Games

emblem captured the essence of the Gold Coast and what the

Commonwealth Games was all about.

“The emblem has been inspired by the Gold Coast’s stunning

beach side location, its iconic skyline, and the colours are rep-

resentative of the coast, the hinterland and the celebratory

atmosphere which is synonymous with the region,” Ms Stuck-

ey said.

“Centred upon fluid representations of a gymnast, a hurdler

and a swimmer, the emblem reflects the Games’ deep herit-

age and humanity. “Today’s unveiling shows the world the

Gold Coast can’t wait to share this moment in history.”

GOLDOC Chairman Nigel Chamier OAM said the emblem was

a result of months of research and development. “Market

research was undertaken to unpack the deeper emotional

factors which define the Gold Coast as a place, and those that

define the Commonwealth Games specifically,” Mr Chamier

said.

“Local focus group workshops were held and we then defined

the Games core proposition before engaging brand and de-

sign company WiteKite to develop the artwork.

“It has been a very exciting and thorough process and

GOLDOC believes the emblem is an outstanding reflection of

community sentiment and broader perception of the Gold

Coast and its role as host city for the Commonwealth Games.”

City of Gold Coast Acting Mayor Donna Gates said the official

launch of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games would

reignite the city's passion and anticipation.

“We all remember how excited we were back in 2011 when we

learned the city had won the rights to host the Commonwealth

Games, and this major milestone keeps the Gold Coast and the

State of Queensland firmly on the world-stage,” Cr Gates said.

“The Gold Coast community is passionate about being the host

city for the 2018 Commonwealth Games and our new Games

emblem will proudly be displayed around the city for all to

see.”

The emblem has also received praise from the President of the

Commonwealth Games Federation, HRH Tunku Imran of Ma-

laysia. “I’m delighted with the emblem. I feel it captures per-

fectly the warmth, the energy, the fun and the vibrancy of the

Gold Coast and Queensland and represents everything the

Commonwealth is looking forward to in 2018,” Prince Imran

said.

With the 2013 Australian Ice Hockey League season

well underway The team at Ozsports took time out to find out

about our 1st Team Profile. This edition we delve into the

South Australian team Adelaide

Adrenaline.

Ice Hockey in South Australia

A little known fact is that Adelaide hosted an ice hockey game

in Australia back near the turn of the 20th century. Some re-

search indicates a skating rink was at the corner of Hindmarsh

Square and Pirie Street until 1909 when an open air cinema

called Paris opened on the site of the former Elite Skating

Rink.

In 1963, the grandfather of current captain of the AIHL Ade-

laide Adrenaline team/ Australian Olympic Ice Hockey team

Greg Oddy established the Hindley Street Ice Skating Rink

where ice hockey began in earnest.

The Goodall Cup was originally a State vs State series run as a

carnival once a year. The Goodall Cup is now used as the tro-

phy for the AIHL championship.

HISTORY OF ADELAIDE ADRENALINE

The Adelaide Adrenaline was formed in 2000 and is arguably

the most successful team in the short history of the Australian

Ice Hockey League (AIHL), winning five minor premierships

and three championships in their ten years of competition.

Along with the Sydney Bears and Canberra Knights, the Adren-

aline (then known as the Adelaide Avalanche) were one of the

founding members of the AIHL in 2000. They finished

first out of three teams that year and claimed the inaugural

AIHL championship. In 2001, the club enjoyed the same

success in winning their second consecutive title.

In 2002, the Melbourne Ice, Western Sydney Ice Dogs, and

Newcastle North Stars joined the AIHL, expanding it to six

teams. The Goodall Cup, Australia’s top prize in ice hockey,

also became part of the AIHL that year. Adelaide again fin-

ished second in the overall standings and lost to the Bear’s in

the Goodall Cup final.

The Avalanche finished the 2003 season with their fourth

straight minor premiership but lost to the Ice Dogs in the first

round of a newly introduced four-team system. They would

lose in the semi finals again in 2004 to the North Stars in dou-

ble overtime.

As two more teams—the Brisbane Blue Tongues and Central

Coast Rhinos—entered the league in 2005 , the Avalanche

returned to dominance by finishing first overall in the regular

season standings. The “curse of the minor premiers” once

again came back to haunt the team, however, despite winning

through to the Goodall Cup final for the first time in three

years, they were defeated 3-1 by the North Stars in that game

The Avalanche retooled for 2006 in the quest for their first—

ever Goodall Cup, their roster boasting Mighty Roos players

Greg Oddy and brothers Ben and Luke Thilthorpe. They fin-

ished second after the regular season and hosted the finals

series, beating the Ice Dogs 5-2 to reach the final but losing

the final 0-4 to the North Stars.

Members of the Adelaide Avalanche were featured on epi-

sode 11 of Network Ten’s Cyber Shack TV on 10 October

2006. Both David Huxley and Brad Wanchulak played and re-

viewed the NHL 2K6 on Xbox 360.

Changes in ownership in 2008 caused some disruption to the

team and damaged the 2008 season.

Adelaide Adrenaline South Australia’s

Ice Hockey Team playing in the AIHL.

ADELAIDE ADRENALINE

Page 19: 4th quarter julyaugust 2013 edition

But the start of the 2009 season saw the team adopted a new

identity, Adelaide Adrenaline and return to being a power-

house in the AIHL.

During it’s time Avalanche/Adrenaline has imported many

high-class players from North America and Europe including

Steven MCKenna (ex-captain of the NHL team Pittsburgh Pen-

guins in 2005).

The Adrenaline had an outstanding season in 2009 capped off

by a victory over Newcastle North Stars 3-2 to capture their

third championship.

The Adrenaline carried good form into 2010, reaching the

Grand Final, eventually falling 4-6 to the hometown Mel-

bourne Ice in front of a capacity crowd at the newly construct-

ed Icehouse in Melbourne.

In 2011 and 2012 Adrenaline again made the finals but lost in

the semis against Melbourne Ice, 3-8 (2011) and against New-

castle North Stars, 4-5 (2012), in both years they lost to the

Championship team.

Between the Posts is Adelaide Adrenaline’s weekly online vid-

eo show hosted by the Crew from Mad Mondays online sports

radio show Celeste Newbery and Patrick Glover.

Between The posts is full of news from the Adelaide Adrena-

line Ice Rink. With regular interviews with members of the

team and coaches. A favourite segment on the show is the

“SIN BIN” where the hosts put a player under the pump each

week and the important question with a tongue and cheek

approach always worth a laugh.

Football Federation Australia have released the draw for the Hyundai A-League 2013/14 Season with 27 Rounds of action set to kick off on 11 October 2013.

For the first time ever, the Hyundai A-League will go all the way through until May with the Hyundai A-League 2014 Grand Final set to close out the season on 4 May 2014.

In another first, this season the Hyun-dai A-League will be broadcast on free-to-air television when the first of the weekly Friday night matches is broad-cast live into homes on SBS2 and Fox Sports from 7.30pm.

Kicking off the season in an action packed opening weekend will be last season’s all time highest rating regular season match, Sydney FC v Newcastle Jets.

On Saturday a Grand Final rematch between Hyundai A-League 2013 Champions the Central Coast Mariners against the Hyundai A-League 2013 Premiers Plate winners Western Syd-ney Wanderers before the Melbourne Derby later in the evening. And on Sunday, Wellington Phoenix will take on Brisbane Roar before Adelaide United and Perth Glory go head-to-head.

Fox Sports will for the ninth straight season show all matches of the Hyun-dai A-League 2013/14 Season and Hyundai A-League 2014 Finals Series exclusively live, with Friday nights shared with SBS2 at 7.30pm. The broadcast on free-to-air television will give the Hyundai A-League an even wider audience, expanding Australian football to more football fans around Australia than ever before.

FFA CEO David Gallop has praised the creation of the draw as an example of cooperation in building a dynamic draw for all fans of the game.

“This season’s draw has been crafted to ensure that whether you are an avid supporter of a team or the many new fans discovering the Hyundai A-League there is always something to look forward to in every round of the 2013/14 competi-tion,” Gallop said.

“This season will also see the competition fight for more turf with the Hyundai A-League 2014 Grand Final set to take place on 4 May.”

With the introduction of one match a week being shown live on free-to-air television the Hyundai A-League is set to get even bigger.

“For the first time we will have Hyundai A-League action on both subscription and free-to-air television which can only be a good thing for the greater growth of the sport in Australia,” continued Gallop.

“Fox Sports and SBS coverage of the Hyundai A-League will allow for football to continue its sharp growth trend. Reaching a wider audience meaning more fans can get closer to the action than ever before at our fantastic venues or via our tele-vision, radio and digital properties.”

All 135 matches will be broadcast exclusively live on FOX SPORTS with the Friday night match now broadcast simultane-ously on SBS2 at the regular slot of 7.30pm AET.

This season, Hyundai A-League matches will also be broadcast into China, Italy, the US, UK, Hong Kong, Singapore and Myan-mar as well as international live streaming of all matches by Perform.

To coincide with the release of the Hyundai A-League 2013/14 Season Draw, FFA has welcomed the fact that long-term nam-ing right’s partner, Hyundai, has extended their grassroots partnership that will see Hyundai increase their support of Australian grassroots football.

The opening match of the Hyundai A-League 2013/14 Season will kick off on Friday night, 11 October, at Allianz Stadium.

The New Zealand Breakers have

claimed a third consecutive NBL Cham-

pionship, producing a gutsy road per-

formance to win Game Two of the

2012/13 iiNet National Basketball

League Grand Final Series tonight at

Perth Arena.

Coming off a strong Game One performance, the Breakers

proved why they are the best road team in the competition,

wrapping up the game and series 2-0 with a 70-66 win over

the Perth Wildcats.

In a game worthy of deciding any NBL Championship, it was

a tight opening half with the Wildcats feeding off the capaci-

ty 12,500 crowd crammed into Perth Arena.

In a performance indicative of their ability to grind out a

result, the Breakers silenced the fanatical home support

with a 25-14 third quarter that saw the lead stretch beyond

double figures.

With their season on the line, Perth mounted an almighty

comeback, getting within one point with less than 30 sec-

onds remaining on the back of two clutch free throws from

Greg Hire.

As the Perth crowd pushed the Wildcats towards a remarka-

ble come-from-behind victory it was none other than CJ Bru-

ton who would have the final say.

The man who led the Breakers to the 2012 NBL title was

again on hand to close out the season, draining two late free

throws to ice the win.

Capping off a remarkable 2012/13 NBL season, New Zea-

land’s star import Cedric Jackson was named NBL Grand Fi-

nal MVP.

The Breakers historic three-peat puts them in the conversa-

tion of all-time best NBL teams, becoming just the second

team to achieve the feat – joining the Sydney Kings of 2003

to 2005.

Coach Andrej Lemanis also joins elite company, with the

legendary Brian Goorjian as the only

coach to oversee three consecutive NBL titles.

After tipping off the season with a loss to the Wildcats at

home, the Breakers were quickly back to their dominant

best, 24 of their next 27 games – including a 16-game win-

ning streak to secure a third-straight minor premiership.

Consecutive series sweeps of Sydney and Perth, including

two massive road wins, ensured Auckland would again be

the home of the NBL Championship trophy.

Basketball Australia Chief Executive Officer Kristina Keneally

congratulated the Breakers on another outstanding season.

“What we have witnessed from the New Zealand Breakers –

not only this season, but over the past three seasons – has

been nothing short of remarkable,” Ms Keneally said.

“To win an NBL Championship takes an amazing amount of

effort, dedication and desire – to win three consecutive NBL

Championships is testament to the hunger for success of all

involved at the New Zealand Breakers.

“Congratulations to Andrej Lemanis, his coaching staff and

players, owner Paul Blackwell and the Breakers organisation

on another brilliant season.”

Paralympian Leo was entered in eight events and, despite a busy schedule and tough international competition, the 2010 IPC World Championship silver medallist managed to muster up enough energy to take home five individual medals including one gold, two silver and two bronze.

A promising freestyler, Leo proved her versatility when she won silver in the 800m freestyle behind Berlin local and four-time Paralympian Daniela Schulte (10:57.82), and then changed pace to take gold in the 100m free in a time of 1:04.17.

West Australian Scott also collect-ed multiple medals, finishing the meet with two silver medals and one bronze.

Scott managed to medal in all three of her butterfly events; win-ning silver in the 50 in 32.43 and 200m fly (2:48.87), and bronze in

the 100m fly (1:12.22).

Three-time Paralympian Rose joined Scott on the podium in the 100m fly, collecting the bronze in a time of 40.16.

While the men’s events saw Paralpympians Michael Anderson and Ahmed Kelly each take home gold from their respective races.

A gold medallist from London in the 4x100m freestyle relay, Anderson turned over to take gold in the 100m backstroke, hitting the wall in 1:02.25. Kelly’s gold came in his pet event, the 100m breaststroke, with the 21-year-old hitting the wall in 1:50.92.

BURLEIGH HEADS, AUSTRALIA—Billabong announced the addition of Australian Laura Enever to its pro surf team.

Enever, 21, is one of the most popular female surfers in the world today and will start the 2013 ASP World Tour later

Harry Kewell signs with Melbourne Heart for one year

Melbourne Heart has announced the signing of former Socceroos star Harry Kewell.

The club's chief executive Scott Munn confirmed on Wednesday Kewell has signed with the Heart for the 2013-14 A-League season.

Kewell had been in talks with former Socceroos team-mate and Heart coach John Aloisi for several weeks.

"John Aloisi and I have known each other a long time and we have played together, so I'm thrilled to be part of Melbourne Heart at an exciting time," Kewell said in a statement.

"It's always been my intention to come back and play in the A-League."

Kewell, 34, played at rival club Melbourne Victory before leaving at the end of the 2011-12 season due to family reasons.

More recently he played three games for Al Gharafa in Qatar. Hs form there was not good enough to earn a Socceroos call-up in the eyes of national coach Holger Osciek but his attitude impressed Aloisi.

"I have been in regular contact with Harry over the past few months and have been so struck and impressed by his hunger," Aloisi said.

"He has always been a wonderful professional and a winner and, in spending time with him, nothing has changed.

"I watched Harry's progress in the Middle East very closely and it's clear that physically he is in great condition so we are confi-dent that, with a big pre-season, he will be flying by round one."

It will be a highly anticipated return to the A-League with Kewell set face his old team Victory first-up.

Swimming loses top sponsor Energy Australia after spate of recent controversies

SWIMMING Australia has plunged into an $8 million black

hole after being dumped by their major sponsor in the wake

of the toxic culture, Stilnox and donkey scandals to rock the

sport.

The Courier-Mail can reveal that principal partner of Swimming Australia, Energy Australia, this week dumped their major

sponsorship of the sport, fed up with the string of scandalous headlines.

The company had signed a five-year agreement in February 2012, a lucrative arrangement believed to increase in value every

year until 2017.

Insiders suggest it was valued at $2m in 2013, which would be an enormous blow for the sport as it constituted almost half of

Swimming Australia's annual revenue for corporate sponsorship.

SA will make an announcement later today.

Combined with the $500,000 in annual funding cuts the sport received from the Australian Sports Commission, the sport now

has an $8m shortfall between now and the 2016 Rio Olympics.

"I can confirm we have ended our agreement with Swimming Australia," an Energy Australia spokesperson said.

Swimming Australia had yet to reply to inquiries at the time of publication.

It was a case of third strike and you're out for a sport that continues to crucify itself from top to bottom.

The resignation of president Barclay Nettlefold this week, after being accused of inappropriate behaviour, was the final straw

for the biggest corporate backers of swimming.

Sam Stosur set for Fed Cup

Australia’s Fed Cup captain Alicia Molik has named an unchanged team of Saman-tha Stosur, Jarmila Gajdo-sova, Casey Dellacqua and Ashleigh Barty to con-test the World Group Play-offs in Chiasso, Switzerland, later this month.

Eighteen-year-old Storm Sanders from Western Aus-tralia will join the team as ‘orange girl’ following prom-ising results on the Pro Tour. Sanders won her first title in Launceston and reached the final in Ipswich and semis in Bundaberg.

“I have absolute faith and belief retaining the same team (as in the first round against Czech Republic) to face Switzerland,” Alicia Molik said today.

“Our playing list has collec-tively enjoyed much suc-cess on clay over the last few years. Each of the girls is dedicated to doing every-thing possible for team suc-cess and I am proud of them for this reason.

“It’s fantastic we are able to play in Switzerland, which will provide the best prepa-ration for a favourable Euro-pean clay court season for the whole team. It is also terrific Australia now has a world class clay court train-ing facility at Melbourne Park as it really is vital to

ensure our juniors develop their tennis on clay early and learn to love it,” Molik continued.

Stosur is looking forward to meeting up with the team this weekend to prepare for the tie.

“I’m really looking forward to working with Alicia and the girls to win this tie against Switzerland. Fed Cup is always a great week, we have a terrific team and I’ve played some of my best tennis in this environment,” Stosur said.

Australia have won five of their six Fed Cup ties against Switzerland, most recently posting a 4-1 win in Fribourg in February 2012.

Switzerland is expected to name two top-60 players, Romina Oprandi, ranked 52, and world No.57 Stefanie Voegele to lead the team. Voegele has en-joyed some impressive form recently, qualifying for both Indian Wells and Miami and reaching the semis at Charleston.

Australia needs to win the Play-off to stay in the elite top eight of the Fed Cup World Group.

WA Football condemns umpire abuse

A Goldfields Football League player has been deregistered from playing in any football competition in-definitely following a serious incident of umpire abuse on the weekend

WA Country Football League General Manager Joe Georgiades condemned Kambalda reserves player Kristgen Bennett’s actions as completely unacceptable and said the WACFL had a zero tolerance approach towards umpire abuse.

“This is a serious offence and I am extremely disappointed it occurred,” Georgiades said.

“The deregistration of this player should send a strong message that behaviour like this will simply not be tolerated.

“Football games can’t happen without umpires and we must all treat them with the respect they deserve.”

Bennett was suspended for 18 months by the Goldfields Football League Tribunal for intentionally, recklessly or negligently making contact with an Umpire.

He has also been deregistered under new national rules that apply to all players who accumulate 16 weeks or more of suspen-sion over their senior playing career.

With just a handful of games before the end of the regular

season, the A-League is really shaping up a cracking finish with

the race to secure finals positions.

The Central Coast Mariners sit in pole position,

and have their fate in their hands to seal the

"Minor" Premiership and an automatic AFC Champions League

berth. They have come through their toughest tests well, most

impressively demolishing the Melbourne Victory 6-2 at home

in Round 22.

Graham Arnold's side has been the model of consistency yet

again this season, and even interruptions with players coming

and going in January failed to derail their claims to another

league title.

The loss of Tom Rogic to Celtic hasn't been

felt too much as Mike McGlinchey has

stepped into the number ten role, with his

most notable contribution being the hat trick

in the demolition of the Victory.

It's hard to see anyone toppling them come end of March, and

Western Sydney Wanderers now seem to be the only challeng-

ers remaining to the minor premiership.

And what a season it has been for the Wanderers. Tony Popo-

vic has masterminded a stunning winning streak of 7 games

leading up to the showdown with Central Coast in round 23.

The progress of the infant club has been nothing

short of amazing, as the fans have turned out in

numbers and in voice, supporting their talented

squad while making Parramatta Stadium a sea of

red and black.

It seems nothing fazes them, and who knows, they could yet

steal the title off the Mariners.

The same probably can't be said about Melbourne Victory. The

defeat in Gosford was a third on the bounce, and third against

rivals for the title. Losses to Adelaide and Western Sydney

were costly enough without the trashing in Gosford.

Losing key players to injuries do not help, with Archie Thomp-

son, Nick Ansell and Gui Finkler notable absentees in those

defeats, while the new signings of Francesco Stella and Daniel

Mullen have yet to settle in.

Ange Postecoglu is not the sort of manager to give up howev-

er, and will be desperate to put things right before the finals

come around. The emergence of youngsters Scott Gallaway

and Connor Pain has been a particular highlight in the last

month and should only help the Victory's cause.

Now to a team that flew out of the blocks, Adelaide United will

be rather disappointed at how the season has panned out ever

since that 6-1 trashing away to Western Sydney. There has

been a change of coach, with John Kosmina leaving his post

citing an inability to continue in the job with much uncertain

behind the scenes.

The team's fortunes have not been great since the new year,

inconsistent form seeing them fall behind the pacesetters. A

top four spot should be a certainty however and they will be

looking to get some consistency before the finals come

around.

Chasing the front four are the rest of the teams. Such is the

tight nature of the league that teams in finals places drop in

and out every week.

A common theme seems to be poor away form, and this is

something John Aloisi has been desperate to address with his

Melbourne Heart outfit. Their home form is not an issue, hav-

ing won the last three home games prior to round 23. The

problem has come when travelling. They haven't picked up 3

points away from Melbourne this season, a huge problem in

any finals push.

Page 47: 4th quarter julyaugust 2013 edition

Melbourne Heart Player Vince Grella

retires from A-League

The retirement of Vince Grella didn't help their cause, as he

had been brought in to re-invigorate a midfield so reliant on

the injury prone Fred. Departures of Aziz Behich and Michael

Marrone have also caused a problem defensively, though the

return of Eli Babalj has given them a bit more edge up front.

A team in the a similar boat is Sydney FC. They can't buy a win

away from home at the moment either. Yet they have im-

proved vastly under Frank Farina who seems to have sorted

out some of the problems that crippled Sydney's start to the

season.

Marquee man Alessandro Del Piero continues to dazzle the

competition, and with the extension of his stay sorted out, he

should be able to concentrate on keeping up his form.

The arrival of Lucas Neill will also help Sydney, whose leaky

defence has been the cause of much woe for them this sea-

son.

The Newcastle Jets have been in and around the playoff spots

all season thus far, and have struggled to find any sort of con-

sistency to their performances. They have had their good and

bad moments, and need to sort their consistency problem out

if they are to make the finals.

Losing Ryan Griffiths to Beijing Baxi won't help them, but with

Socceroo Adam Taggart, marquee man Emile Heskey they

would hope that he isn't missed too much for the run in.

Then we have the strugglers. It's almost hard to believe that

the Brisbane Roar fall into this category given their success

over the last couple years, but that's exactly where they are

and have plenty to sort out.

An unsuccessful trip to Thailand to face Buriram United meant

failure to qualify for the AFC Champions League, a huge blow

for the club.

They have also lost influential midfielder Erik Paartalu, but the

whole team has really failed to capture the imagination this

season.

The Roar have decided to stick with Mike Mulvey as head

coach for the next couple years, and he has a big job on his

hands to turn Brisbane into a force in time if they are to make

the finals, or if they do, make a serious impression.

Last year's runners-up Perth Glory have also had a season to

forget so far. Apart from some indifferent form, injuries and

un-replaced departed players meant the squad is threadbare,

with not many options.

Ian Ferguson has left the post, and his replacement Alistair

Edwards has a big task on his hands. Finals football looks un-

likely for them now, and they face a big task to rebuild.

Finally there is the Wellington Phoenix. The Phoenix have

found themselves in trouble this season, unable to go on con-

sistent runs of form. While they have always been there or

thereabouts come the end of the season, it's looking doubtful

that they will finish anywhere other than battling Perth for the

wooden spoon.

Ricki Herbert has now resigned from his post, a huge blow for

the club. While this may signal a welcome change for the club,

there is plenty to work on if they are to save their season.

The acquisitions of Isaka Cernak and Corey Gameiro should

help their cause, but the task gets tougher with each week for

the Phoenix.

Whatever happens in the last four rounds of the A-League, it

is set to be a barnstorming finish with so much still to be de-

cided. With a Melbourne Derby final could be on the cards, as

could a Sydney Derby final, matchups that could make the

new finals series the best yet!

Ian Ferguson sacked as senior

coach of Perth Glory.

In a $13 million coup for the state government, the opening series of the MLB will be held at the SCG on Saturday March 22 and Sunday March 23 – the first time a competitive US baseball fixture will be held in Australia and only the sixth time one has been staged outside America.

The games have been described as the biggest international-ly recognised event in this country since the 2003 Rugby World Cup final and come exactly 100 years after the Chicago White Sox played against NSW at the SCG.

“Sydney will host the first two games for the opening series of 2014 Major League Baseball at the Sydney Cricket Ground,” Premier Barry O’Farrell said.

“The opening series will feature the LA Dodgers and the Ari-zona Diamondbacks playing the first two games of the sea-son.

“This is a significant win for Sydney and again delivers on my election commitment to bring major events to NSW. It’s esti-mated the matches will deliver a $13 million benefit for the local economy, as well as attract visitors from interstate and overseas.”

NSW will be showcased to an estimated global TV household audience of up to 168 million, including 75 million in the US.

Ironically – or perhaps fortuitously for sports fans who like to see a bit of biff – the Dodgers and Diamondbacks had a huge brawl in their game yesterday, with the entire squads of both teams running across the field to fight each other.

A similar spectacle can’t be predicted next year but the Dodgers and Diamondbacks will be in Sydney for six days, when they will play the two games and open the doors to their training sessions.

Sports Minister Graham Annesley said the event would “generate more than 10,000 international and interstate visitor nights to Sydney, which will help us reach our goal to double overnight tourism expenditure in NSW by 2020″.

“Sydney has a history of hosting significant baseball games at the SCG, with the Chicago White Sox playing against a combined NSW team in 1914,” he said.

“The SCG will be transformed into an MLB field, with the construction of an infield clay area, pitcher’s mound, dug-outs and additional grandstand.”

opening series of next season— between the LA

Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks— to be played

Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars win first Women’s Ashes ODI

The Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars have recorded a 27-run win over England in the first Women’s Ashes One Day In-ternational (ODI) against at Lord’s today.

The win places the Australian side two points ahead of Eng-land in the race for the trophy in the new multi-format series, following the drawn Test. Commonwealth Bank Southern Star spinner Erin Osborne was named player of the match for her dominant bowling display.

The visitors were on the back foot early when opener Rachael Haynes (0) was caught and bowled by Katherine Brunt (3-29) in the first over. Fellow opener Meg Lanning (56) toiled hard for her half century, finding the boundary on eight occasions. Captain Jodie Fields (32) worked well with Lanning to steady the innings as they piled on a 74-run partnership before Lan-ning was caught out by Heather Knight off the bowling of Laura Marsh (2-27). Ellyse Perry (24) and Alex Blackwell (23) were the next highest run scorers, helping the side to a total of 8-203 from their 50 overs.

It took the Australian side more than 19 overs to make their first breakthrough, with Arran Brindle (21) caught out by Sarah Coyte off the bowling of Osborne(3-39). Prior to Brindle’s dis-missal she built a 63-run opening partnership with England captain Charlotte Edwards. Edwards then paired up with Sarah Taylor (22) to add 36 runs between them before Taylor was removed leg-before-wicket by Jess Jonassen (4-38). Jonassen struck again in her next over, with Lydia Greenway adding only one run to her side’s total before being caught behind by Fields. Edwards was the main-stayer of the England innings, reaching 61 runs from 90 balls before she was caught behind of Osborne’s bowling. Despite taking only one wicket Sarah Coyte (1-20) proved critical to the bowling attack, conceding only 20 runs from her nine overs, which included two maid-ens. Jonassen (4-38) went on to claim a total of four wickets, including the final one which saw England finish all out for 176 in the 48th over.

After the match Osborne said: “I think the wicket of Charlotte Edwards changed the momentum back in our way. I thought that came on the back of some really tight bowling by Sarah Coyte, I thought she was the pick of the bowlers from both teams today.”

The full scorecard can be found here: http://livescores.cricket.com.au/summary_2886_1.html

Player of the match Erin Osborne spoke to the media follow-ing the match. Audio from this media opportunity can be found on the CA Media Centre, details below.

HOCKEYROOS PRETTY IN PINK FOR NATIONAL BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION

Hockeyroos hand over cheque for $9000 and launch Ausdrill Pink Ladies Day 2013

Australia’s women’s hockey team, the Hockeyroos, were joined at training today by representatives from National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) and Ausdrill as the reigning Commonwealth Games gold medallists presented NBCF with a cheque for $9092.05. The money was raised by the Hockeyroos and their major sponsor Ausdrill during a community engagement trip to Kalgoorlie in May.

The presentation also marked the announcement that the Ausdrill Pink Ladies Day will return to this year’s International Su-per Series Hockey 9s in Perth on Saturday 19 October.

The event will see the Hockeyroos don specially made pink bodysuits for their match against world champions Argentina on the Saturday with fundraising activities hosted throughout the day. Fans attending the Hockey 9s are encouraged to get be-hind the cause by wearing something pink on the day.

Presenting the cheque, Hockeyroos captain Madonna Blyth said: “The Hockeyroos and National Breast Cancer Foundation have formed a strong bond over the past couple of years and it is a real honour to present NBCF with this cheque.

“I have experienced how breast cancer can impact upon families. My aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer ten years ago but, fortunately, she is one of the luckier ones; she came through it.

While one in eight Australian women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime, the more positive news is that there is a strong survival rate in this country. The fact that we can play a small part in this through raising funds for further research, screening and improved treatment is hugely important to the team.

“We thank everyone that put their hands in their pockets to donate money in Kalgoorlie, whether they made a gold coin donation, bought a raffle ticket or purchased a piece of Hockeyroos memorabilia in the auction. Thank you.

And Blyth said the Hockeyroos can’t wait to support the cause at the 2013 Ausdrill Pink Ladies Day, adding, “We’re thorough-

ly looking forward to supporting the National Breast Cancer Foundation this year at Ausdrill Pink Ladies Day and hope to raise

even more money. I’d urge everyone who comes to the International Super Series Hockey 9s to embrace the event and wear

pink.”

Page 53: 4th quarter julyaugust 2013 edition

)

Carole Renouf, CEO of the National Breast Cancer Founda-tion, said: “The Hockeyroos have been fantastic ambassadors for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The money raised by Ausdrill and the Hockeyroos will help fund Australian-based research projects which are changing the future of breast can-cer and breaking new ground every day.”

While five-year rates for breast cancer have increased dra-matically since the Foundation’s inception, from 70 per cent of all those diagnosed in 1994 to nearly 90 per cent today, Ms Renouf says the National Breast Cancer Foundation is com-mitted to ending deaths from breast cancer and beyond that, prevention and cure.

Ausdrill managing director Ron Sayers said: “It was an abso-lute pleasure for Ausdrill to be able to facilitate the Hockey-roos’ trip to Kalgoorlie and to help raise so much money for National Breast Cancer Foundation. The partnership between Ausdrill, the Hockeyroos and NBCF is a strong one and I’m particularly pleased that, once again, Ausdrill Pink Ladies Day will be part of the International Super Series Hockey 9s as we continue to support this cause.”

Hockey Australia, the Hockeyroos and Ausdrill will support National Breast Cancer Foundation at Ausdrill Pink Ladies Day on Saturday 19 October at Perth Hockey Stadium.

A special Ausdrill Pink Ladies Day function will be hosted as part of the day, during which guests will be given the oppor-tunity to meet members of the Hockeyroos team in the priva-cy of the hospitality suite, hear from invited speakers and en-joy a great day out while supporting National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Tickets for the Ausdrill Pink Ladies Day function are on sale for $99 now via www.hockey9s.hockey.org.au/tickets or by calling 03 9947 9900 .

General admission tickets to the International Super Series Hockey 9s are also available via the website starting at $20 for adults.

About the National Breast Cancer Foundation

The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is the leading community-funded organisation in Australia raising money for research into the prevention and cure of breast cancer. Since NBCF was established in 1994, over $97 million has been awarded to fund over 340 Australian-based research projects

to improve the health and wellbeing of those affected by breast cancer. For more information and to register an event,

Michael Clarke named

Wisden cricketer of the

year

TEST captain Michael Clarke has been named Wisden's leading cricketer of

2012, becoming only the third Australian to receive the honour.

He joins former skipper Ricky Ponting (2003) and legspinner

Shane Warne (2004) in being given the accolade.

Clarke scored 1595 runs in the 2012 calendar year, including

four double centuries, averaging a remarkable 106.33.

In the 150th edition of Wisden Cricketers' Almanack, the his-

toric publication said 2012 witnessed a full flowering of the

lavish batting talent announced so spectacularly on debut by

Clarke in Bangalore in 2004.

"It began with 329 not out against India, the biggest Test in-

nings ever played at the SCG, curtailed only by his own decla-

ration, with (Don) Bradman's (and Mark Taylor's) highest Test

scores of 334 one hit away.

"A double century followed at Adelaide before, at the start of

the 2012-13 season, free-hitting back-to-back doubles against

South Africa. He rounded off the year with his first century in a

Boxing Day Test, against Sri Lanka. His score, 106, was also his

calendar-year average; only Bradman, (Sir Garfield) Sobers and

Ponting before him had reached New Year's Eve on such a

plane. And his 2012 Test aggregate of 1595 placed him nearly

350 runs clear of his nearest rival, Alastair Cook.

Clarke said he felt very honoured to be named as Wisden's

leading cricketer in the world.

"Given the esteemed history and tradition of the Wisden Crick-

eters Almanac, it is a very humbling accolade and one that I

hold in the highest regard.''

Clarke's accolade as leading world cricketer is a relatively new

award, given for only the 10th time.

Eight others have won it including Warne and Ponting - with

Indian opening batsman Virender Sehwag doing so twice.

England batsman Nick Compton was named as one of Wis-

den's five cricketers of the year, joining his grandfather Denis

who earned the accolade in 1939.

Compton is the only Englishman to receive the prestigious

nod, which can only be given to an individual once in their

career.

His form won an England call for the winter tours of India and

New Zealand and he appears to have cemented his place as

Andrew Strauss' replacement in time for a first Ashes series.

South African trio Jacques Kallis, Hashim Amla and Dale Steyn

join Compton, as does West Indian Marlon Samuels.

The cricketers of the year are nominated for their achieve-

ments in the previous English summer, with the Proteas play-

ers rewarded for their 2-0 Test series win over a home side

they ultimately replaced as world No.1.

Samuels joined them having excelled for the West Indies earli-

er in the summer in the face of defeat.

Of the overseas contingent, the inclusion of Kallis is most sur-

prising. Not because he was deemed worthy, but that it had

not already happened before.

The 37-year-old allrounder is a colossus of the modern game

and a key part of the South African side who so skilfully dis-

mantled England on

their own turf on their

way to becoming the

world's No.1 Test side.

Amla and Steyn are

equally strong picks,

the key batsman and key

bowler in the sport's

most formidable unit.

SHANE WATSON STEPS DOWN

AS AUSTRALIAN

CRICKET VICE CAPTAIN.

Australian bowler and batsman Shane Watson advised Cricket

Australia that he wished to step down from the role of vice

captain across all forms of the game.

Commenting on the decision, Watson said: “Making the deci-

sion to step down wasn’t easy but it’s something I’ve been

thinking about since the Test series against India ended.”

“ I think it’s the right time for a change for both the team and

me. I’ll be honest and admit I wrestled with the decision for

some time, however once I made up my mind, I informed

Cricket Australia so the selectors could consider their options

for the Ashes given the squads will be announced soon.

“ I want to be the best Test player I can for Australia and think

I can do that by stepping down from the vice-captaincy to fo-

cus my attention on scoring runs, taking wickets and doing

whatever is necessary to help the team achieve success. I

won’t be the vice-captain in title but I think I can still be a lead-

er and strong contributor around the group.

Watson rang Australian chairman of Selectors John Inveraity

and Australian Coach Mickey Arthur to advise them of my de-

cision and the decision made by Watson and agreed with

Shane that this is the best outcome for Watson and the rest of

the Australian Team.

“I thank Cricket Australia for the leadership opportunity over

the past two years and I’m really looking forward to the this

next phase. In my conversations with Mickey and Michael I

reaffirmed my commitment to the team and support for them

as we fight to win back the Ashes and get back to being ranked

number on in the world,” Watson said.

Cricket Australia National Selector John Inverarity said:

“Shane Watson should be commended for making the tough

call to step down from the vice-captaincy to focus on playing.

Regardless, he will still be an important senior leader within

the team.

“The National Selection Panel (NSP) will now consider and

then put a vice-captaincy recommendation to the Cricket Aus-

tralia Board for its approval.”

The timing of the Ashes squad announcement is yet to be

confirmed.

Emma Johansson Wins Gooik-Geraardsbergen-Gooik

After consistently delivering podium results for the Australian squad, Emma Johansson won a three-up sprint in Gooik to take her well-deserved spot on the top step of the podium. It is the double Swedish National Champion’s first victory in ORI-CA-AIS colours and her second win of the season.

“I’m very happy,” said Johansson. “I honestly didn’t know if I was going to make it to the finish in that break today. I was so cooked.”

Johansson and Tiffany Cromwell were part of an eight rider escape group that formed over the helligen that peppered the opening loop of Gooik-Geraardsbergen-Gooik. The first hill split the bunch, and all six of the ORICA-AIS riders made the first of three groups that formed. The gaps between the groups solidified over the next climb and on the cobbles. By the time the race had hit the third hill, eight riders had split away from 21 chasers.

Johansson, Cromwell, Marianne Vos (Rabobank-Liv Giant), Iris Slappendel (Rabobank-Liv Giant), Jessie Daams (Boels-Dolmans), Rossella Ratto (Hitec Products-UCK), Maaike Pol-spoel (Sengers Ladies) and Katarzyna Pawlowska (GSD Gestion – Kallisto) had 33” over the peloton as they crossed the finish line for the first time. With the 58 kilometre opening lap com-pleted and seven local laps left to race, the eight leaders con-tinued to work together, trading pulls to grow their ad-vantage.

The gap stretched out to over a minute during the first local lap of 10.6 kilometres but fell to 36” during the second lap. Despite the fluctuations, no team in the bunch could organise a chase strong enough to shut down the move. By lap three, the gap has pushed out to over one minute again. It would continue to grow as the laps ticked down.

“By lap three, we knew were in the race winning move,” said Cromwell. “Emma and I had a talk, and we decided we would wait until the last lap to attack. We planned to use the bit of a climb after the finish to make our move. We didn’t want to go any earlier because we were both struggling quite a bit. It had been a hard race – a hard three days of racing.”

The decisive action unfolded earlier than expected. On the penultimate lap, Vos accelerated on the hill where Cromwell had planned to make her move one lap later.

“Marianne went on the small climb, and I had to chase her down,” said Cromwell. “When I brought that back, Iris coun-tered straightaway. Luckily, Emma was in the right position to mark Iris. Maaike bridged up to them almost immediately. It was the perfect situation for us.”

“When Marianne went, I thought ‘No. No way. I cannot go,’ ” added Johansson. “I was really on the limit. Tiff was tired, too, but she went after her. Iris countered as soon as Marianne came back to us. She got a small gap, and I knew I had to go after her. Tiff couldn’t do it again. Even though I was cooked, I

knew I had to give it everything at that moment. I had just gotten onto to Iris’ wheel when Maaeke came up to us.”

Initially, the trio collaborated in an effort to distance them-selves from their former breakmates. As the gap approached 30”, Slappendel began to skip turns.

“Maaeke was keen to work with me, and Iris worked with us initially,” explained Johansson. “I think Iris thought Marianne would ride across to us, so she stopped working at some point. I’m still a bit fuzzy on the details. I was completely at my limit, so a lot of what happened is a bit of a blur.”

“In the last lap, we still had 30” and we realised then Mari-anne probably wasn’t coming across,” Johansson continued. “Iris attacked, and I shut her down. I tried to get Maaeke to attack after that. I thought if she did, we could make Iris chase. It was better for both of us to make Iris tired for the finish after she had sat on for a bit. Maaeke didn’t attack, and I hon-estly can’t remember what happened after that until it was time for the sprint. It’s just a black hole. I was hurting a lot.”

Johansson entered the final corner on Slappendel’s wheel. Polspoel sat behind Johansson.

“We were altogether when we came in for the final,” ex-plained Johansson. “I kept telling myself ‘Hold it, hold it, hold it. Wait, wait, wait.’ I knew I could beat Iris in the sprint, but I wasn’t sure about Maaeke. I went at 250 metres. I took the corner wide so neither of them could pass me on the outside, and I sprinted straight for the line after that.”

Johansson edged out Polspoel for the win. Slappendel round-ed out the podium. Cromwell outkicked her group of five to win the sprint for fourth place.

“Once Emma was up the road, I just had to sit back, cover and relax,” said Cromwell. “My job was to make sure nothing went across, and there wasn’t ever any serious threat.”

“I knew I wanted to be on Vos’ wheel for the sprint, so I shoved my way there,” Cromwell continued. “The speed dropped dramatically as we entered the sprint. We were going so slow. It was still crawling even at 500, 400 metres to go. When we hit 300 metres, I knew I had to jump. I can’t sprint if it’s really slow because I can’t match other people’s accelera-tions. I took the risk to jump first, and nobody came around me.”

Mathew Hayman Joins ORICA-GreenEDGE

ORICA-GreenEDGE is pleased to welcome a Classics specialist and well respected domestique, Mathew Hayman, to the team in 2014. Hayman has inked a two year contract with the Aus-tralian outfit after having spent the last four years with Team Sky.

“Mat Hayman is a very important inclusion into our roster for 2014,” said Sport Director Matt White. “To have him on board and hopefully finish off his career with us is great news.”

As an Australian, Hayman naturally had a keen interest in his homegrown team well before it became reality.

“I watched the team from the start,” said Hayman. “There was talk about it for five years leading up to getting a license and sponsors. I followed along the whole way. Watching it evolve and feeling the excitement in Australia to finally get a team it can support was great.”

A long time veteran of cycling, Hayman brings a wealth of knowledge with him.

“With Mat, we get a lot of experience in a lot of different races and a great leader for our younger riders,” noted White. “He's crucial to a lot of things we want to achieve.”

Although many Australians have made their home in Girona, Spain, Hayman has chosen to lay his roots in Belgium in part due to his specialty on the cobbled roads of the Classics.

“I really enjoy the Classics – they are where I get my best re-sults,” said Hayman. “My major focus will be to get the most out of the Classics in the next two years. I’d like to bring all my years of experience together and hope that I’m at the pointy end for all of them.”

In addition to his early season goals, Hayman also hopes to eke out a place in the ORICA-GreenEDGE Tour de France squad.

“It will be a lot of hard work to make the team, but I am moti-vated to make it happen,” added Hayman.

Because Hayman has played the role of domestique for much of his career, not all of the results he’s had a hand in

have been credited to his name. While his basked in his team-mate’s glory repeatedly throughout his career, he considers his greatest accomplishment a personal result he achieved not on the cobbles of Belgium but on home soil.

“The biggest moment of my career was winning the Common-wealth Games in front of a home crowd in ’06,” said Hayman. “The day, the people, the emotions, wearing the Australian jersey – it was all unbelievable.”

“I’ve snuck onto the podium a few times myself in the Clas-sics,” added Hayman. “That’s been an important achievement as well. Next year I hope to do more sneaking onto the podi-um.”

Hayman credits Team Sky for a notable four years while he also looks forward to this opportunity with new riders at ORI-CA-GreenEDGE.

“I have had a great four years at Sky,” said Hayman. “It was a wonderful experience, and I learned heaps.”

“I wasn’t part of the AIS so I don’t necessarily know all the Aussies on the team very well,” added Hayman. “I have spo-ken to everyone but this will be a new experience. The mates-manship and friendship on this team have been the basis of its success. Without it, it’s a hard sport.”
