The first Training Networks Programme took place in1999/2002 and was extremely successful, the refrigeration

sector of the building services industry taking fulladvantage of all the funding offered. Indeed, it already has

its new timetable in place for the coming programme.

Upskilling a company's workforce is critical to maintainingcompetitiveness. Upskilling an entire industry sector makesthat entire sector more professional, competitive, effective

and capable of meeting client's needs.

However, the cost of upskiling by way of training initiativescan be expensive. Enter Skillnets, the enterprise-led body

The new Sanyo 600mm by 600mm minj-cassette, now available fromSanyo Ireland

Sanyo has expanded itsrange of room airconditioning with therelease of the new 600 x600mm Mini Cassette.Forming part of the 'SAP'room air conditioningrange, it utilises theexisting portfolio ofoutdoor condensing units.By offering both heatpump and cooling onlyversions with R407crefrigerant it meets allcurrent environmentalneeds. However, byoffering R22 heat pumpcompatibility, it can beretrospectively fitted ontoan existing system.

Like all the units in theSanyo 'SAP' range, theheat pump facility comescomplete with auto­changeover function and

New HQ Buildingat Spencer DockTreasury Holdings has received planningpermission for a 300,000 sq ft building atSpencer Dock which will housePriceWaterhouseCooper's new headquartersbuilding. The new HQ is scheduled foroccupancy by early 2004.

Treasury expects to generate up to 500 directconstruction jobs at this landmark developmentwithin a matter of months, with an additional500 indirect jobs being created through sub­contractors and suppliers on the site.

Spencer Dock will be serviced by trains,buses, LUAS, DART and will have direct accessto the south side of the river by a new bridgedesigned by Spanish architect Calatrava. Twohotels, a large number of apartments (includingsocial and affordable), restaurants, shops, pubs,a health centre and educational facilities are alsoplanned for the site.

Trane Mini-Atom AirHandling UnitsIAQ (Indoor Air Quality)is an ever present issue inbuilding servicesapplication designs. Withthis in mind Traneresearched the marketrequirements and hasnow launched a new,smaller range of airhandling units with airvolumes from 0.1 to1.2m3/s.

The Mini-Atom ismanufactured with analuminium frame, double­skinned panel enclosing25mm of CFC free foaminsulation. The standardfinish is galvanised steel,with mushroom colouredplastisol finish availableas an option. All units aresupplied with ceiling­mounting brackets asstandard, and floor­mounting rails as anoption.

Energy Authority to SpearheadDrive to Reduce CO2 andGreenhouse EmissionsSustainable EnergyIreland is to spearheadthe drive to reduce theenvironmental impact ofenergy production anduse and the levels ofgreenhouse gas emissions.This year Ireland willconsume 15 milliontonnes of oil equivalent(MTOE) of energy, costingconsumers over €7 billionand emitting over 45million tonnes of CO2.

Ireland's energy-relatedCO2 emissions arise fromtransport (28%); housing(27%); industry (25%);other buildings (16%);and agriculture (3%).

Sustainable EnergyIreland has also published

its five-year strategydocument, which outlinesthe new Authority'spriorities and targets. Itsremit relates to three mainareas:- improving energyefficiency;- advancing thedevelopment andcompetitive deploymentof renewable sources ofenergy and combinedheat and power;- reducing theenvironmental impact ofenergy production andconsumption.

During the period of thefive-year strategySustainable Energy

Ireland will beresponsible for theexpenditure of €223million through itsoperations andprogrammes, which arebeing funded under theEconomic and SocialInfrastructure Programmeof the NationalDevelopment Plan. TheAuthority will also advisethe Government onpolicies and aimsmeasured at stimulatingsustainable energypolicies and actions bypublic bodies, thebusiness sector, localcommunities andindividual consumers.

Interclima 2004 will beheld at Paris Expo Portede Versailles onTuesday 3, Wednesday4, Thursday 5 andFriday 6 February 2004.Product presentationswill be as follows.

Digital Facilities Guidefor MechanicalInstallation

Zutec has completed aDigital Facilities Guidefor all mechanicalinstallations on theredeployment of essentialbuildings by McKennaEngineering for LUAS atthe St James's Hospitalsite.

The project was fundedby LUAS and involvedthe demolishing andrebuilding of themortuary, old boilerhouseand laundry at St James'sHospital in order to cleara line of track through thehospital. McKennaEngineering carried outthe mechanicalinstallations on the newbuildings, a project thatwas valued at over Elmillion.

HevacGolfingSilverH evac held its 21st annual

golf outing in HermitageGolf Club recently with 90

taking to the fairways and 120sitting down to dinner later thatevening. The participants included amix of mechanical contractors,consultants, suppliers and overseasguests.

Those who went out early in theday were somewhat unlucky in thatit rained for a time, those out laterin the day playing in far morecomfortable conditions. With theregular 10th out of action atHermitage on the day, there was nocar for the traditional hole-in-onecompetition. Instead, the temporarywinter 10th was used with the prizebeing a full set of Calloway GolfClubs. However, no one made thehole-in-one.

As usual, the Hevac hospitalityleft nothing to be desired, rightdown to the Tipperary Crystal giftleft for every single person presentat the dinner table.

As is now customary, virtually theentire party adjourned to MoransRed Cow Hotel after the meal andpresentation of prizes in Hermitage.There are even reports of earlymorning risers the next day comingdown to breakfast only to discoverfellow-guests who had yet to go tobed!

All in all it was an enjoyable andmemorable occasion for allconcerned.

Automatic balancing is themodern way of ensuringoptimum balance acrossthe entire riser and it isagainst this backgroundtha t Danfoss Ireland hasintroduced the DanfossASV automatic balancingvalve series.

It provides radiatorthermostats with the bestpossible workingconditions while reducingnoise problems;minimising the cost ofcommissioning; providingprecision at all loads; easyadjustment; and doing

expanding the system.Danfoss ASV consists of

two automatic balancingvalves and two manualvalves. The differencebetween the balancingvalves is that the ASV-PVcan be adjusted between5-25kPa (factory setting10kPa), and the ASV-P ispermanently set for 10kPa.

The manual valvescomprise the adjustmentvalve ASV-I, as well as theshut-off valve ASV-M.Measuring nipples for

V-M are available ascessories.The 90° angle between

connections and operatingelements makes operationsimple. The ASV isequipped with a shut-offknob and is available withinternal or external threadfor threaded and weld-onnipples.

The ASV ensuresoptimum balance andfunctioning across theentire ri er and is adaptedto the normal basis fordimensioning heatingsystems. Th refore, it canmo tly b electedaccording to pipedimensions.

The 90· angle between connections and operating elements make~operation simple. The ASV is equipped with a shut-off knob and IS

available with internal or external thread for threaded and weld-onnipples.

Danfoss ASV is wellsuited for large systemswith significant pressurefluctuations between theextreme points of thesystem. Moreover, even insystems with relativelylow pressure and smallpressure fluctuations itwill show its strength.

The valves also have apressure-relieved conewhich makes themindependent of pumppressure.

Additionally, there is aseparate dedicated valve- an automatic flowlimiter called the ASV-Q- for one-pipe, constantflow systems. This isespecially suited tosystems where thenecessary data for manualadjustment is lacking. TheASV-Q ensures that theflow never exceeds the setmaximum water volume.It is unnecessary tomeasure and adjustwhen installing thevalves.

Moreover, whenrenovation or expansion ofthe system results inchanged system data,there is no need for newmeasurings and re­adjustment. It is alsopossible to shut off theriser or drain/fill throughthe drain cock.

IGNORING DEVELOPMENTS AT OUR PERIL

World Plumbing Conference ­Missed Opportunity for Ireland

With over 300 delegatesrepresenting 26countries attending the

World Plumbing Conference inBerlin earlier this year, it wasmost disappointing that I wasthe only person from Ireland toparticipate. This, in my opinion,represents a missedopportunity for the Irishplumbing industry,especially with much of thedevelopment currentlytaking place in theplumbing sector happeningon a global scale.

As an island nation sittingon the edge of Europe Ithink that we ignore suchdevelopments at our peril. Irespectively suggest that, inorder to monitor andcapitalise on plumbingdevelopments in the future,the Irish plumbing sector asa whole needs to make sureit is represented on theWorld Plumbing Council,and to make sure that itactively participates in thenext World PlumbingConference which isscheduled to take place inSydney, Australia, in March2005.

While acknowledging that theIrish plumbing sector is made upof many constituent parts ­contractors (large and small);consultants; designers;manufacturers; agents;distributors; and education andtraining organisations - I stillsee no reason why we cannotensure effective, all-industry,representa tion.

As a possible solution I believethat the Republic of IrelandBranch of the Institute ofPlumbing is ideally placed torepresent the interests of theIrish plumbing industry on theWorld Plumbing Council. Wehere in Ireland have much to

offer, a great deal to gain, andnothing to loose by activelyparticipating in this type offorum. This year's conferencecovered the entire industry, witha mix of product exhibits andtraining workshops catering forall needs. The overall theme was

"Water, Heat, Air", withinternational expertsmaking variouspresentations on waterquality and public health;air hygiene and airconditioning; climateprotection; and energyefficiency.

Also discussed was thefuture direction of theWorld Plumbing Council,training, and informationtechnology.

SmartHouse, part of anexhibition running intandem with the conference,featured heavily in allactivities throughout thefour days. SmartHousedemonstrated how energycan be saved in a number ofareas, while also illustratinghow remote access toappliances can simplify theservicing regime.

Dublin Airport

FOllOWing a competitivebidding processadvertised in the

European Journal, EdinaLtd was recently selectedby Aer Rianta to carry out aturnkey, 3MW, combinedheat and power (CHP)project at Dublin Airport.

Aer Rianta already hastwo existing Jenbacher CHPModules at the airport­one 600kW and one 1MW- which have beenrunning successfully foreight years and five years,respectively. Edina is the

agent in Ireland for theustrian-based Jenbacher

gas engine company andhas built up a strongrelationship with airportstaff where it now servicesboth CHP and dieselgenerators in Dublin, Corkand Shannon airports.Edina has also won anotherimportant contract in Cork,again following EuropeanJournal competition. It hasjust been selected to installa 143kw CHP unit to

provide electricity and heatfor the LeisureworldComplex in BishopstownCork. The hot waterproduced will help to heatthe swimming pool.

Edina has alsosuccessfully completed anumber of small-scale CHPprojects (range < 500 kw)such as Camden CourtHotel (92 kw), Navanswimming pool (143 kw)and Drogheda waster watertreatment facility (162 kw).Edina is the major installerof gas engine CHP units inIreland with almost 30machines in placethroughout the country.Overall, the company ishaving another successfulyear with a total of sevenmajor projects in progress.

Around 70 to 90 millionheating pumps are in usethroughout Europe.

Although they are not frequentlyconsidered to be high energyconsumers, the sheer magnitudeof their use does in fact result incolossal electricity consumption.They account for 35 to 50 billionKw/Hr every year­corresponding to around onepercent of the annual primaryenergy requirement of a countrythe size of Germany.

The most common type ofcirculating pump installed todayis the glandless pump design.These pumps have theadvantage that they aremaintenance-free and practicallynoiseless. However, this must bepaid for with the lower efficiencyof the glandless motor. This inturn has a direct influence on theprimary energy cost - and thusalso on the operating costs. If wetake into account that apart fromthe high number of circulatingpumps in a building, these unitsalso have a very high operatingduration (heating pumps up toaround 6,000 operating hoursper year), it is possible to see anenormous savings potentialwhich is dormant. This can nowbe realised with the nextgeneration in pump technology.

Reduced lifecycle costsNormally, products with higherefficiencies and thus lower energyconsumption are more expensiveto manufacture and this is reflectedin a high~r sales price to that ofconventional products. Up tonow, the extra costs due to theelectronics have made marketintroduction difficult. However,the situation has clearly improvedwith the availability of compactconverters and advances in thefield of power electronics andmicroelectronics.
