BBIA Recipe Corner

Caprese Pasta SaladWe all like a good pasta salad on a hot evening or as a side dish with our favorite BBQ. What I like about this recipe is no mayo!

Ingredients1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil

1/4 cup fresh lemon juice

1 shallot, minced

1 small clove garlic, minced

Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper

1 teaspoon sugar (optional)

2 pounds mixed heirloom tomatoes, cored, seeded and cut into 1/2-inch pieces

1 pound pasta, such as campanelle, penne or fusilli

12 ounces fresh mozzarella cheese, cut into 1/2-inch pieces

1/2 cup chopped fresh basil

1/2 teaspoon grated lemon zest

DirectionsWhisk the olive oil, lemon juice, shallot and garlic in a large bowl. Season with salt and pepper. Add sugar, if desired (depending on the sweetness of your tomatoes). Add the tomatoes and gently toss. Marinate at room temperature, about 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, cook pasta as the label directs. Drain in a colander and run under cold water to stop the cooking.

Add the pasta and mozzarella to the tomato mixture and toss. Stir in the basil and lemon zest, and season with salt and pepper. Refrigerate, tossing occasionally, until serving.

NAHB Studies Illustrate Local Impacts of Home BuildingEvery builder knows that if you’re trying to get approval for a new project, one of the most effective resources you can have at your disposal is an economic impact study that provides solid estimates of the local jobs, income and taxes that stand to be generated by that project going forward. What you may NOT have known is that such studies are a specialty of NAHB’s economics team, who have completed more than 700 of them for HBAs, member companies and individuals over the past 16 years. While these individual studies are customized for different metro and non-metro areas and become the property of the party who commissioned and paid for them, NAHB has also put together a local impact study for a typical metropolitan area, which is available to you free of charge along with other resources on our local impact of home building page. Please bear in mind that this study is designed to capture only local impacts (excluding, for example, upstream jobs generated in manufacturing which aren’t typically located in the same place the homes are built). NAHB also produces national impact of home building estimates that do include these manufacturing jobs and have a number of other differences from the local estimates. (If you are lobbying at the local level, you should use the local impact numbers. If you are lobbying at the national level, you should use the national numbers. If you need state-specific numbers, these can also be furnished by NAHB.)

According to our studies, the estimated one-year local impact of building 100 single-family homes in a typical metro area amounts to:

$21.1 million in local income

$2.2 million in taxes and other revenue for local governments, and

324 local jobs

The additional, annually recurring local impact of building those homes amounts to:

$3.1 million in local income

$743,000 in taxes and other revenue for local governments, and

53 local jobs

The complete “typical metro” study includes more detail (such as local jobs by industry and impacts for remodeling and multifamily construction), and explains the relatively conservative methodology NAHB uses to estimate the economic benefits of home building. This helpful resource can be printed or downloaded instantly

by any NAHB member. Also available instantly and at no cost on the same web page is a companion study that shows how much new housing costs local governments in a typical metropolitan area, and how quickly new housing pays for itself.

Does Your Company Have a Distracted Driver Policy? NAHB's legal experts recently completed a helpful guidance document for employers on the importance of establishing official company policy regarding distracted driving. You should know that your employees' use of cell phones while driving can generate potential liability issues, particularly if an accident occurs. In addition to civil liability, the employer also has a legal responsibility under the Occupational Safety and Health Act to safeguard drivers at work. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has now officially declared that companies are in violation of the law if by policy or practice they require texting while driving or create incentives that encourage or condone it, or if they structure work so that texting is a practical necessity for workers to carry out their job. As outlined in NAHB's guidance, an employer must make it clear to employees that the company's distracted driver policy applies to personal cell phones whenever the employee is driving a company vehicle or on company business, and also applies to company cell phones even while the employee is off the clock. Habitat for Humanity of Ravalli County is excepting used building material at its new location at 131 Old Corvallis Road in Hamilton. Used items and material is re-sold to assist low income families with housing in Ravalli County.

Items needed are functional appliances, windows, doors, lumber, ect. Items can be dropped off Monday – Thursday from 10 -2 PM. Pick ups are also available.

Re-Sales are currently on-going at the Habitat Center from 9-4 Friday and Saturday. Volunteers are also needed for Friday and Saturday shifts at the Habitat Center. Call 375-1926 for more information.
