School Improvement Committees The CIS School Improvement Committees are the primary vehicles for driving school improve-ment, and they also provide an opportunity for groups of faculty & staff to organize important CIS events. These committees are venues for collaboration on important topics such as the CIS curriculum review cycle, standardized assess-ment, technology integration, and school-wide norms for character & behavior. Self-Esteem

In many classroom guidance lessons over the past two weeks I have been speaking about

self-esteem in different ways. With most of the grade levels, I have been talking about em-

bracing differences and unique qualities in ourselves and others as well as the importance of giv-

ing and receiving compliments.

Self-Esteem represents how we feel about or value ourselves. As one upper elementary student put it, “It

is how we see ourselves.” It is remarkably important because poor self-esteem has been associated with

depression, suicide, low academic achievement, susceptibility to peer pressure and delinquency. Low self-esteem

is a result of a discrepancy between the importance of an area and one’s perceived competence in that area. Re-

search shows the importance of positive regard from parents, peers, and teachers as a critical determinant of self-esteem.

Conditional positive regard (making the child feel loved or accepted only when he/she meets high standards) is devastating to

self-esteem. Unconditional positive regard builds self-esteem, and here are some additional suggestions for parents:

Reflect on your parenting style; warm, accepting, concerned and affectionate parents often have children with high self-esteem.

Provide clear and fair rules, consistent and fair discipline. Help your kids to problem-solve when appropriate, but don’t always solve

their problems for them.

Allow your child some choice and control in daily activities (within limits).

Establish “family time” on at least a weekly basis.

Let your children know that you have confidence they can do things independently.

Acknowledge a job well done.

Start with the positive when correcting your child.

Encourage your kids to walk in another’s shoes. Respect and esteem for others goes hand-in-hand with self-esteem.

Dear CIS Parents:

This year CIS students will be taking the Measures of Academic Progress® (MAP) October

7 -18. (The MAP assessment will replace the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS). MAP tests

are unique in that the questions adapt for the child’s level of learning. The data from the MAP

tests will provide information about your child’s instructional level and measure academic growth

throughout the school year.

This coming week your child will prepare for the MAP by viewing a PowerPoint presentation and taking the

MAP familiarization assessment on a computer. With MAP tests we can administer shorter tests and use less

class time while still receiving detailed, accurate information about your child’s growth. As a result, MAP testing

does not impact instructional time but enhances the instructional opportunities.

Your child’s class will come to the computer lab on two separate occasions. The average time for each MAP test is an

hour, however it is not a timed assessment and each child will have the necessary amount of time needed to complete each

section. Prior to taking the MAP tests there is not any other preparation or studying necessary or required for students.

The schedule of MAP testing over the 2 weeks for Grades 3 through Grade 8 is attached.

FIRST SAT TEST DATE: October 5th!

REMINDER: The first SAT test is right around the corner on Saturday, October 5th. Test takers need to arrive at CIS by 7:40 am at the very latest! Doors close at 8:00 am sharp, no exceptions. The test will conclude at approximately 12:30 pm.

OUTSTANDING IB STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

In our Secondary Assembly this month, the IB teachers acknowledged the excellent work ethic and achievements of Blakely M., in Grade 11. Blakely received our ‘Outstanding IB Student Achievement Award’, in recognition of

the brilliant job she has done settling in to a new school, whilst also dealing with the pressures and demands of pursuing 6 IB subjects. IB courses are rigorous and challenging, and we’re proud of all of our students for tackling their courses, but our Outstanding IB Student award is only given to those who have really gone above and beyond, and have managed to stand out from the crowd. Well done Blakely – keep up the

First Game of the Season

On Wednesday, September 25, the boys’ football team compet-ed against Cayman Prep in their first game of the season. The game ended in a 2-2 tie. The team proved that they will be very competitive in the PSA league this year. The players and coaches felt like they outplayed Cayman Prep and they were a

little disappointed with the tie, but they recognize that there are areas for continued growth. Coach Ol-sen, Coach Shaun, and Coach John are proud of the effort, and they strongly believe that the team is committed to hard work and to-getherness. These characteristics will ensure success throughout the season. The team plays again on Thurs-

day, October 10 at 3:45 p.m. against Wesleyan Christian Academy. GO BLUE IGUANAS!

TEST ANXIETY Test anxiety can be a real problem if you're so stressed out over a test that you can't

get past the nervousness to focus on the test questions and do your best work. Feeling ready to meet the challenge, though, can keep test anxiety at a manageable level. Here are

some tips to help you manage your stress and do your best on tests.

Use a little stress to your advantage. Stress is your body's warning mechanism — it's a signal that helps you prepare for something important that's about to happen. Use your anxiety to your advantage.

Instead of reacting to the stress by dreading, complaining, or fretting about the test with friends or parents, take an active approach. Let stress remind you to study well in advance of a test.

Ask for help. Although a little test anxiety can be a good thing, an overdose of it is another story entirely. If taking a

test gets you so stressed out that your mind goes blank and causes you to miss answers that you know, then your level of test anxiety probably needs some attention. Your teachers, your counselor, or a tutor can be useful resources to talk to if

you always get extreme test anxiety.

Be prepared. Some students think that going to class is all it should take to learn and do well on tests. But there's much more to learning than just hoping to soak everything up in class; no amount of cramming the night before a test can take the place of the deeper

level of learning that happens over time with regular study. Be confident! Many students find that their test anxiety is reduced when they start to study better or more regularly. It makes sense — the more you know the material, the more confident you'll feel. Having confidence going into a test means you expect to do well. When you expect to do well, you'll be able to relax into a test after the normal first-moment jitters pass. Take care of yourself. It can help to learn ways to calm yourself down and get centered when you're tense or anxious. For some people, this might mean learning a simple breathing exercise. Practicing breathing exercises regularly (when you're not stressed out) helps your body see these exercises as a signal to relax. Also, it’s important to get enough sleep, exercise, and have a healthy meal before a test to keep your mind working best. Everything takes time and practice, and learning to beat test anxiety is no different. Although it won't go away overnight, facing and dealing with test anxiety will help you learn stress management skills. This is important skill that will help with all areas of your life.

CIS would like to invite parents to be involved in the following committees: Cayman History and Culture This committee has been successful in planning the event that has become a tradition at CIS. Members of the committee will include faculty, and possibly parents and students. KIDS FUN RUN - FAQs

Q. When is the Kids Fun Run? A. The 2013 Cayman Islands Marathon KIDS FUN RUN takes place on Sunday, 1 December at

10:30am.

Q. How do students register for the Kids Fun Run? A. Registration is FREE. Just complete the form on the opposite side, have it signed by a parent and

fax it to 946.8811 or email it to info@CaymanIslandsMarathon.com. You can also register online at www.CaymanIslandsMarathon.com

Q. Is the registration limited? A. Yes! Registration is limited so registering early is important.

Q. Where is the start and finish line? A. The race starts at the New Government Administration Building on Elgin Avenue and ends at

Breezes By the Bay Restaurant on the waterfront. This is where the Cayman Islands Marathon, Half-Marathon and 4-person relay races begin and end.

Q. What time should the kids assemble at the start line? A. Runners should be assembled at the start line NO LATER THAN 10:00am so that the race can start

on time.

Q. What does the registration for the Kids Fun Run include? A. Registration includes a T-shirt, a runner’s bib and a medal for all finishers.

Q. How do I get my T-Shirt & Bib? A. All children registered have to come to the Packet Pick-Up at The Grand Cayman Marriott on

Saturday, 30 November between 10am and 3pm to collect their runners’ packet. No packets can be collected the day of the race and no runners will be allowed to run without a bib on.

Q. How old do the kids have to be to participate in the Kids Fun Run? A. Kids should be ages 5 to 11 (approximately Years 3-6) in school in order to be eligible to

participate.

Q. Where can parents park in order to watch their kids run? A. Dr. Roy’s Drive, The Village or the Govt. Admin. Bldg. parking lot. Then you can walk over to the

Finish line.

You can run a Full Marathon! It’s easy, here’s all you have to do:

1. Register online for the Intertrust Cayman Islands Marathon

Kids Fun Run, it’s FREE! Visit CaymanIslandsMarathon.com

2. Starting Monday, 23rd September or any time after that run, jog, hike

or swim 25.5 miles before race day (1st December)

3. Have an adult or parent sign for each mile you complete.

4. Bring your completed running log & collect your race packet, which

includes your specially designed T-Shirt & Runners Bib from the

Grand Cayman Marriott on Saturday, 30th November

between 10am – 3pm

5. Come to the Race by 10am Sunday, 1st December at the start area by the new Government

Administration Building on Elgin Avenue.

6. Run your final 0.7 miles of your full marathon and collect your medal at the Finish Line!
