AgendaI. Welcome

Invitation to expand empower-ment from ourselves to our re-gions, and beyond.

II. IntroductionsIntention: To invite participants to help create an exciting and infor-mative conversation. This feeling is generated by the wisdom of our ancestors, a shared sense of urgency in our time, and a hope for our children and grandchildren.

III. Where are we?Intention: To share the urgency of the global, social, economic and enviromental crisis and to understand this as one multifaceted crisis, not separate issues. This crisis has four dimensions:

Social Justice Environmental Sustainability Economic Viability SpiritualFulfillment

The goal of sustainable development is to meet today’s needs without compromising the capacity of future generations to meet their needs.

IV. How did we get here?Intention: To distinguish emergencies that we face as individuals and as a society, and to develop the capacity to envision future generations.

V. A New Story for Sustainable Regions

Intention: To recognize that a new way of seeing the world that is profoundly interconnected is emerging in our culture, consistent with life on the planet. This enables us to visualize solutions through parts of our problems that seem fragmented and disconnected, and in turn, create the possibility for a future that is not an extension of the past.

VI. Breakthrough Community Strategies

Intention: To share exam-ples of strategies adopted by communities of color and social justice advocates in the U.S. working to develop holistic solutions for our time.

VII. Where do we go from here?Intention: To express our commitment to creating an environmentally sustainable, economically viable, sociallyjustandspirituallyfulfillinghumanpresenceonthisplanetastheguidingprincipleof our times, and to identify for ourselves actions and practices which are consistent with our stand.

VIII. Compass for Collaborative LeadershipIntention: To share transformative strategies and tools that have been effective in regional contexts throughout the United States.

IX. ClosingIntention: To review the workshop and outline next steps for building sustainable communities.

This book is part of a new series at MIT Press. Sustainable Metropolitan Communities Books provide an exploration of the social and environmental justice dimensions of sustainability within a regional and community-based framework. Addressing issues of race, ethnicity, class, gender, and connection to place are central to the mission and goals of the series.

Our work has been enriched by many colleagues, including Joanna Macy, the Pachamama Alliance, the Angeles Arrien Foundation, the Blue Moon Fund and the Ford Foundation.

About the Artist:All photomontages contained in this material are created by Keba Armand Konte, an Oakland based artist. Konte’s work refers directly to humanity – the body and the community – particularly the dynamic state of urban living. He layers memory and metaphor as he inscribes social conditions, emphasizing love, vulner-ability, decay and loss. www.kebakonte.com
