The New Mexico Rural Water Association continues to progress in our mission to provide technical assistance, training and advocacy for the drinking water and wastewater industry in New Mexico. The Association is able to accomplish this by tapping into years of real-life experience, common sense and hard work on the part of our volunteer Board of Directors and the best Rural Water staff in the business! Added to this winning combination is the foundation of an active membership, dedicated to providing safe drinking water, environmentally responsible wastewater systems and protecting our precious water resources.
This past year has been another success as we have continued to strengthen existing partnerships while seeking out new avenues to benefit our members. Our staff provided 91 days of training throughout the state during 2011. NMRWA trained almost 1,000 people in the topics of water, wastewater, manage-ment, leadership, financial, and board responsibilities. The staff of NMRWA have 100 years of combined experience as certified water operators!
Each year the difficult job of properly managing drinking water and wastewater utilities becomes more complex... And the rules and regulations governing our operations more stringent. Technical assistance and training from the New Mexico Rural Water Association is a critical resource for small communi-ties to be able to maintain compliance with the increasing number of federal regulations under the Safe Drinking Water Act and the Clean Water Act.
As we struggle to understand and comply with the ever-increasing number of regulations, we all need to take advantage of every opportunity to positively influence the laws affecting our industry:
Stay in close contact with your elected officials. Participate in the regional planning processes. Stay abreast of state and federal regulations and involve yourself whenever changes in drinking water and wastewater regulation are proposed. Most important: Continue to participate in the activities of the New Mexico Rural Water Association!
I have certainly enjoyed and appreciated the past year as President of the Association, and I look forward to the future. My pledge, on behalf of the Board of Directors, is to continue to nurture the old and new partnerships that have contributed to our past success, and continue our efforts to help all of our water and wastewater systems as we roll into the future.
Please call our office if we can be of assistance to you and your system.
Sincerely,
David Kenneke President

techNicAL ASSiStANce SuMMARy NMRWA employs professional certified operators that travel New Mexico to provide free technical assistance and hands-on training directly to system personnel at their facility. On-site technical assistance improves the skill level of operators by teaching them how to solve problems as opposed to fixing the problems for them. NMRWA staff help troubleshoot and provide practical solutions for operations, maintenance and regulatory issues faced by drinking water systems every day.

MeMBeRShiPNMRWA experienced a significant growth in membership in 2011, our largest single-year increase for decades. Small water systems continue to be largest component, with over 50% of our members serving less than 100 connections. Large systems and municipalities also recognized the value in belonging to the Association in 2011, resulting in a 60% increase in our largest membership category.
In addition to our system members, any business, corporation, organization or individual adhering to the purposes of the Association may join. NMRWA had 106 Associate members and 10 Individual members in 2011.
