Biblical Calendar BasicsA Primer for studying the calendar given to Moses

As a people and as individuals we need to have a deeper sense of our duty to God andour responsibility to the world. There should be more earnest study of the Scriptures. Ihave been deeply impressed with the importance of studying the book of Daniel inconnection with the smaller prophets, especially Malachi. And we need to give carefulattention also to the lessons taught in the building of the tabernacle and the temple,

    and in the temple service. Through the prophets God has given a delineation of whatwill come to pass in the last days of this earth's history, and the Jewish economy is fullof instruction for us. {RH, November 10, 1896 par. 11}

During the period of the Millerites in the mid 1800s, the time in earths history that theSeventh Day Adventist Church was forming, many biblical truths came to light. Probably themost essential truth to come out of the Adventist 7th Month movement was the determinationof October 22, 1844; the 10th day of the 7th Month in Gods Holy Biblical Calendar; The Day of

Atonement. In order to determine the correct date of October 22, the Millerites had todetermine which calendar to use. It was the calendar of scripture that they had to grapple with. The date of October 22 1844 is one of the essential foundational cornerstones of the SDAchurch. We should know how it is determined.

There are two (2) fundamental questions that have to be asked about this calendar.

    1. Is the calendar of scripture used by the Millerites still valid for us, today andin the end times of earths history? One has to consider the implications ofal l of the appointed times (Lev 23) given by God in answering this question.

    2. Did God pinpoint the 7th day Sabbath on the same calendar, for us toworship Him? In other words, does the 7th day Sabbath belong on theBiblical calendar, or does it belong on the papal Roman calendar? Thisshould be a fundamental doctrinal question for Seventh Day Adventists.

The scriptures, references, etc. in this study may be helpful in

gaining a basic understanding of the timekeeping framework ofthe biblical calendar outlined in the Old Testament. Hopefully itwill be the catalyst to further your study of this vital issue. This isby no means an in-depth or exhaustive study. So get your Biblesand Concordances out and go exploring.

In this paper, many scriptural references are cited pinpointingspecific days of the month. One has to ask the question; whichcalendar do the specified times belong to? Bear in mind that theframework of these specified times was given to Moses about 700

years before any evidence of a pagan or papal Roman calendarappeared. And even then, the first Roman calendar had noresemblance to the calendar we have today, and it was lunar innature.

Are the Appo inted Times given By the Cr eator stillvalid tod ay?

Is the 7th day Sabbath still valid today? 7th Day Sabbathkeepers would agree. But consider this.In the days of the sacrificial system, sacrifices and offerings were also required on the Sabbath,as well as the daily sacrifices and offerings. The sacrifices and offerings were fulfilled and doneaway with at the cross, and are no longer required.

But what about the Sabbath? We still observe, honor and keep the 7 th day Sabbath holy, butwithout the sacrifices and offerings of animals. Other sacrifices and offerings on Sabbaths havereplaced them.

So if the Sabbath, minus the ceremonial sacrifices, as part of the appointed times or feasts isstill observed, why not the other appointed times?

Notice in the following scriptures the use of the word for ever when referring to theappointed times.

Exo 12:14 And this day shall be unto you for amemorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the

W hat did Ellen W hite have to say about the abolishingof the sacrifices and offerings?

The ceremonial system was made up of symbols pointing to Christ, to His sacrifice and Hispriesthood. This ritual law, with its sacrifices and ordinances, was to be performed by theHebrews until type met antitype in the death of Christ, the Lamb of God that taketh away thesin of the world. Then all the sacrificial offerings wer e to cease. It is this law that

Christ "took . . . out o f the way, nailing it to His cross." Colossians 2:14. PP365

    In consequence of continual transgression, the moral law was repeated in awful grandeur fromSinai. Christ gave to Moses religious precepts which were to govern the everyday life. Thesestatutes were explicitly given to guard the ten comm andm ents. They wer e notshadow y types to pass away with the death of Christ. They were to be binding uponman in every age as long as time should last. These commands were enforced by the power ofthe moral law, and they clearly and definitely explained that law. {RH, May 6, 1875 par. 10}

We are to become familiar with the Levitical law in all its bear ings; for it containsrules that must be obeyed; it contains the instruction that if studied will enable usto understand better the rule of faith and practice that we are to follow in our dealings withone another. No soul has any excuse for being in darkness. Those who receive Christ by faith

will receive also power to become the sons of God. 1BC 1110

He did not stop with giving them the precepts of the Decalogue. The people had shownthemselves so easily led astray that He would leave no door of temptation unguarded.Moses was commanded to write, as God should bid him, judgments and laws giving minuteinstruction as to what was required. These directions relating to the duty of the people to God,to one another, and to the stranger were only the principles of the TenCommandments amplified and given in a specific manner, that none need err. They

wer e designed to guard the sacred ness of the ten precepts engraved on the tablesof stone . PP 364

The light esteem in which the law of God is held, even by religious leaders, has been productive

of great evil. The teaching which has become so widespread, that the divinestatutes are no longer binding upon men, is the same as idolatry in itseffect upon the mo rals of the people. Those who seek to lessen the claims ofGod's holy law are striking directly at the foundation of the government of families andnations. Religious parents, failing to walk in His statutes, do not command their household tokeep the way of the Lord. The law of God is not made the rule of life A reformation inthis respect is needed--a reformation which shall be deep and broad. Parents need toreform; ministers need to reform; they need God in their households. PP 143

Gods Statutes are con nected to the descent of the Holy Spirit! The prophecies in the eighteenth of Revelation will soon be fulfilled. During theproclamation of the third angel's message, "another angel" is to "come down from heaven,

having great power," and the earth is to be "lighted with his glory."During the loud cry the light of present truth will be seen flashing everywhereThe Word declares: "Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all

your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, anda new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I

will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in mystatutes." This is the descent of the Holy Spirit, sent from God to do its office

W hat are the Appointed Times given By the Creator?

In ancient biblical times, prior to the time of Christ and His eventual crucifixion, physical sacrificesand offerings were required as part of the appointed times. As well as the appointed times listedbelow, this also included the daily appointed times of morning and evening in the sanctuaryservice, with its physical offerings and sacrifices. These were required in addition to the annual andSabbath offerings and sacrifices. It is these physical offerings and sacrifices that were fulfilled byChrist at His death.

Then all the sacrificial offerings were to cease. It is this law thatChrist "took . . . ou t of the way, na iling it to His cross." Colossians 2:14. PP365

How is the New Mo on Day coun ted in the biblicalcalendar?

The following account of Joshua and the Israelites at Jericho points out the fact that theNew Moon day, the first day of the biblical calendar month is a separate day, and notcounted with the work days and Sabbaths.

Joshua and Jericho: The Math Problem of the m issing Sabbath;Or w ould God have the Israelites mar ching in battle on the 7th Day Sabbath?

There appears to be a math problem affecting the 7th day Sabbath in the accountof Joshua and the march around Jericho for 7 days. The Israelites werecommanded to march around Jericho once a day for 6 days. Then they werecommanded to march around Jericho 7 times on the 7th day, for a count of 7 daysoverall. This means that they marched around Jericho 7 days in a row. Regardlessof the order of the days, one of these days should have been a Sabbath, accordingto the calendar reckoning we use today with a "continuous weekly cycle." So hereare the points and questions that arise out of this scenario.

Yahweh had just given Jericho into the hands of the Joshua and the Israelites. Scriptureindicates it was probably Christ himself that was there with Joshua.

The Israelites had just emerged from 40 years in the wilderness and were keeping theSabbath.

Would Yahweh have given Jericho into the hands of the Israelites if they were not obedientto His commandments and law?

Did Joshua and the children of Israel march around Jericho on a Sabbath? In the NewTestament, examples are given of activities done on the Sabbath by Jesus (or others) that

    He apparently approved of.

If they marched around Jericho 7 days, why is there no mention of a Sabbath? Since theSabbath is so important to God, you would think that it would be included in the Jerichoaccount.

Why did Ellen White not catch this "math" problem? She has a lot to say about the accountof Joshua and the march at Jericho, but there is no mention in her writings referring to a7th day Sabbath.

Cycle of Seven: The True an d the False

Where is the week in the biblical calendar? In the original biblical calendar, there is no week as we know it today. At least, not in

terms of a continuous weekly cycle, as we have been led to believe. There is no evidence inscripture to prove this. In the biblical calendar, there is a continuous weekly cycle each month,

with four seven day periods including Sabbaths, in succession. Each month, at the new moon,

the cycle resets in harmony with the lunar cycle. It appears that the continuous weekly cyclewe have come to believe was more than likely brought with the Israelites when they leftcaptivity in Babylon.

The Modern Planetary Week: Satans false cycle of sevenEncyclopedia Britannica has this to say about the modern week and the calendar:

In the 21st century, we take for granted a seven-day week. However, in some ancient cultures, the length of the week differed. According to the Encyclopedia Britannica:

Among primitive peoples, it was common to count moons (months) rather than days, butlater a period shorter than the month was thought more convenient, and an interval betweenmarket days was adopted. In West Africa some tribes used a four-day interval; in central Asiafive days was customary; the Assyrians adopted five days and the Egyptians, 10 days, whereasthe Babylonians attached significance to the days of the lunation that were multiples of seven. In ancient Rome, markets were held at eight-day intervals; because of the Roman method ofinclusive numeration, the market day was denoted nundinae (ninth-day) and the eight-day

week, an inter nundium. Measurement of time and types of calendars: Standard units and cycles;Britannica 2002 Deluxe Edition; 1994-2002; Encyclopdia Britannica, Inc.

    Gods true cycle of seven?

In recent years, the relatively new science of ChronoBiology has discovered a previouslyunknown cycle or rhythm in the human body, as well as other living things. This cycle orrhythm is referred to as a circaseptan and simply means a cycle of seven. Science is stilllearning about this and other cycles in the human body, which they say was a major surprise.Scientists have found these 7 day cycles are of very ancient origin, appearing in primitive one-celled organisms, and are thought to be present even in bacteria.

In humans, scientists found the circaseptan rhythm to be the key coordinating rhythmfor a complex myriad of cycles, all harmonizing to make up our body clock. The biological baseof seven-day cycles (also called heptads or circaseptans) clearly gives this amazing building

block priority in time: it existed before culture or religion ever recognized a seven day week inhistory. Such an intricate, indisputable base and such a fundamental common design requireus to reconsider this double question: is there a common beginning, a common designer of alllife?

Historians have long held other controvertible views about the origin of the 7 day week.

If the seven-day week is an invention of culture and religion, as most historians would have usbelieve, how do we explain innate circaseptan rhythms in "primitive" algae, rats, plants andface flies? These forms of life have no calendar, can't read the Torah and don't know Saturnfrom Santa Claus.

Here are the questions we need to ask. Is our cycle of seven tuned to Gods system oftimekeeping found in scripture; or is it tuned to the fixed 7 day week found in the papalGregorian calendar? And if we are not following the right cycle, is it making us sick and crazy?

God, through the Holy Spirit, is preparing to restore His church to the biblical principles foundin the Judaic contours of its formative years. The way it will happen is not by an "outpouring"of the Holy Spirit alone but through a Word of God revival.

Here is the promise of God:

"My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distill as the dew, as the small rain uponthe tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass: (Deut 32:2).

The latter rain will be a rain of truth. If the Church needs anything today, it needs thefollowing: ". . . the washing of water by the word." (Eph 5:25-26)

We are together in believing on the Christ of the doctrine but remain divided on the doctrineof the Christ.
