This research project examines characteris cs of proba on officers (PO) and parole agents (PA), including issues surrounding gender, longevity in job, approach in supervising violent offenders, job stress, workplace violence, violence with parolees, and u liza on of respect, rapport, and gendered adapta ons in interac ons with parolees and the public. The research involves qualita ve interviews of POs/PAs, review of records, examina on of social ar facts, and collec on of oral histories involving gender, job stress, and violence. BUILD Scholars on this project will contribute to literature reviews and learn methodological skills, including field research and qualita ve interviewing techniques, as well as qualita ve and quan ta ve analysis. The project is expected to yield at least 3 presenta ons at academic conferences, 3 peer‐reviewed publica ons, all of which will be collabora ve between BUILD Mentors and Scholars (student will present at conferences and publish). I am a qualita ve researcher who is currently inves ga ng the impact of a physical ac vity and nutri on program for underserved adults. Approximately 20 par cipants have been involved with our Beach Community Wellness Program (BCWP) for 2 years and have reportedly experienced many posi ve health benefits (quan ta ve data support this no on). I am interested in learning more about what physical, emo onal, and mental benefits have occurred as a result of the program? Also, what program features a ribute to the consistent engagement? (Trans theore cal model). These are important ques ons to help us determine best prac ces for underserved popula ons. The needs for this par cular popula on are very different from those of a middle and upper class society. Allowing students to delve into this line of research could help pave the way for more community health engagement. I would be very interested in mentoring a student who has an interest in community health and who is interested in qualita ve research, more specifically, ethnographic case study research. The mentee will work with me to conduct field interviews, transcribe data, analyze data, and present findings.

This project in par cular works with community based par cipatory principles and trains promotoras de salud and other community health workers to conduct retailer based research among African Americans, Hispanic/La no, Asian‐Pacific Islander (Korean), Low SES Non Hispanic Whites (Armenians, Russian, other middle eastern immigrant groups), and in American Indians tribal lands to observe compliance, interview retailers on tobacco and electronic cigare es and conduct focus groups with key opinion leaders on tobacco. I will have 3 ac ve projects this summer on the following topics: 1) Randomized controlled trial of an interven on to reduce socializa on into

I also have several datasets on the following popula ons if students are interested in conduc ng secondary data analysis for presenta ons or papers. Datasets are: cross‐sec onal data from 777 PWID collected in LA and SF, CA between 2011‐13; cohort data on 555 bisexual African American men from Los Angeles, Chicago, and Philadelphia collected between 2011 and 2013; and 864 interviews with a cohort of PWID from Los Angeles and the East Bay (in SF) collected from 2003 to 2005.

HEAL lab is a mul disciplinary team that examines the intersec on between health behavior, mental health, and addic on across different popula ons. Our aim is to be er understand and / reduce health dispari es in cancer and other addic on‐related diseases, prevent and treat / addic on and associated mental health problems, and iden fy the basic mechanisms of / emo on and mo va on. We are currently conduc ng a number of different smoking studies, / including a gene cs study on withdrawal amongst African American smokers. We are also / pursuing both psychological and physiological research on vapers, focusing on the trends / rela ng to e‐cigare e usage and acute and sub‐acute effects of diacetyl chemicals upon lung / func on commonly reported in flavored e‐cigare e liquid juice. The language samples are usually collected from children or adults with language disorders result from a variety of reasons (e.g. developmental language disorders, intellectual disabili es, stroke, trauma c brain injury). 1. Spa al analysis of cycling pa erns in Long Beach using mul ‐source geographic data. / This project will use Geographic Informa on Science (GIS) and spa al analysis to study cycling pa erns in Long Beach and surrounding areas by taking advantage of data from mul ple sources, including both authorita ve data and crowd‐sourced data. The rela onship between the actual routes cyclists traveled and exis ng street condi ons will be analyzed and a density map of cycling pa erns will be generated. The findings will shed light on cyclists’ route choices, travel behavior, and the condi ons of current street bicycle facili es, which are all cri cal for policy makers who are interested in promo ng alterna ve urban transporta on and health‐enhancing behaviors.

2. Which place demonstrates the most ac ve lifestyle in the social media? Using geolocated tweets harvested from Twi er API, this project will inves gate the spa al pa erns of most ac ve places in the US. Tweet messages related to running, biking, walking, dancing, jogging, gym, etc. will be used as an indicator of an ac ve lifestyle. The project my mentee(s) would work on focuses on health outcomes of women migrants from Nepal. Nepal has an extremely high rate of foreign labor migra on but due to a number of gender discriminatory regula ons and laws, most women migrants migrate illegally. This makes them par cularly vulnerable to a number of nega ve outcomes. While Nepali women’s migra on is understudied in general, the health of Nepali women migrants before, during and a er migra on has not received any scholarly a en on to date. The study asks, 1) What were health issues encountered during the migra on process and while abroad? 2) How were earnings spent on health related expenditures for the migrant or the migrants’ family? 3) Did migra on effect a net change in the health of the migrant or the migrants’ family? The study will engage qualita ve and quan ta ve data collec on using interviews and household surveys. The BUILD scholar(s) will work with the qualita ve and quan ta ve data and eventually assist in in‐country fieldwork in Nepal. While working with collected data the BUILD scholar will develop their proficiency in data processing so ware such as STATA and N’Vivo. In addi on, the BUILD scholar(s) would conduct reviews of the relevant literature. As a mentor I expect my mentee to learn the founda onal skills of research design and implementa on. I also expect the BUILD scholar(s) I work with to develop a deep knowledge of research ethics. I hope to publish and present with my mentee(s) and in this way expose them to a variety of professional skills.

ETHNOCULTURAL INFLUENCES ON WOMEN'S EXPERIENCES OF AND RESPONSES TO INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE. Research about ethnocultural influences on women’s experience of and response to in mate partner violence is scarce, contribu ng to culturally incongruent processes that may deter some survivors from engaging with community systems. To fill this gap in the literature, the current study u lizes a mixed method design to examine the ways that cultural beliefs and contexts serve as a lens through which European‐American, Mexican‐American, Korean‐American, and Vietnamese‐American women experience and respond to in mate partner violence in their lives. To achieve these aims, 300 adult female par cipants will be recruited from community organiza ons in the greater Los Angeles area to complete an on‐line survey about conflicts in their rela onship. One hundred of these survivors will also be invited to par cipate in individual interviews about the conflicts in their rela onship in the language of their choice. Focus groups with key community informants will be used to supplement survivor narra ves by providing further informa on about cultural beliefs that may affect how survivors of in mate partner violence are treated by the community. A grounded theory approach will then be used to analyze all qualita ve data. Student roles include:

2. Rumina on is defined as thinking about a provoking event. People can either ruminate alone (i.e., “individual rumina on”) or they can also experience rumina on as they communally relive a provoca on with other people (i.e., “collec ve rumina on”). I am conduc ng a series of studies looking at collec ve rumina on and its impact on aggressive behavior and violence. In coming months, I will be launching 3 related research projects that center on working with adults with au sm spectrum disorder (ASD). Projects 2 and 3 (described below) will be implemented in collabora on with‐ and in the context of‐ the Learning Independence for Empowerment (LIFE) program at CSULB. For all projects, Scholars will play an integral role in all steps of study development, implementa on, and analysis. Scholars will also be encouraged to present data at conferences and contribute to publica ons. 1) Associa on Between Roman c Rela onships and Quality of Life Among Adults

with ASD This is a survey study launched using Qualtrics. Par cipants self‐iden fy as ASD and complete ques onnaires related to rela onship status, quality of life, and presence of associated psychopathology. ‐ BUILD scholars would par cipate in this study by helping to maintain the survey and ul mately assis ng with data processing and data analysis, with the goal of preparing poster presenta ons and possibly manuscripts for publica on.

2) Rela onship Educa on for Adult In macy and Da ng (READI) interven on program This is a manualized interven on program that was ini ally piloted with 5 adults with ASD. The interven on provides social skills training within the context of da ng and roman c rela onships. ‐ BUILD scholars would par cipate in manual revision based on feedback provided by pilot par cipants. Scholars would assist with literature searches and selec on of measures to assess response to treatment. They would also assist with recruitment and screening of poten al par cipants for interven on. Interested scholars would also receive training in the social skills interven on and assist with delivering the interven on. Ul mately, they could also assist with preparing the manual for publica on and presen ng/publishing data associated with the interven on project.

3) Characteriza on of Depression in Adults with ASD This is a long‐term project based on a previous NIH grant proposal aimed at developing and pilo ng an interven on for depression among adults with ASD. The interven on is modeled and adapted from evidence‐based cogni ve‐behavioral therapy techniques that have been effec ve in non‐ASD samples. The first step in this project entails characteriza on of depressive symptoms in adults with ASD, using focus groups. ‐ The BUILD scholars would assist with development of relevant study materials, recruitment of par cipants, par cipa on in focus groups, analysis of focus group data, and discussion of important themes from focus groups. They would play an integral role in assessing which symptoms are most prominent. A er this phase of the study, scholars would assist with development and ul mately pilo ng of the interven on to target symptoms of depression.

Cor sol Sensor Project: This NIH‐funded study will test whether an electrochemical sensor designed to monitor salivary cor sol levels can reliably detect abnormal cor sol pa erns among a clinical popula on of depressed versus non‐depressed women and men.

The study is a laboratory experiment inves ga ng the rela on between quality of sleep and teamwork processes. Par cipants track their sleep quality with their smartphones before coming to the lab, and then during the lab por on of the study they do a variety of individual‐ and team‐level decision making and crea vity tasks. Isolate T‐DNA inser on mutants in genes that are up‐regulated during leaf senescence and test whether these genes contribute to leaf aging. Students par cipa ng in these studies first learn how to isolate genomic DNA, perform PCR and analyze gene c data. Students then prepare DNA for sequencing, analyze sequence data, design primers, isolate RNA and produce cDNA. These second set of skills confirm that the gene of interest is not being expressed in the T‐DNA inser on mutant. In the next phase of the research project, students grow mutants and wild type controls and compare chlorophyll, protein and gene expression during leaf senescence. These data are subject to a sta s cal analysis to determine if differences are significant. These projects will equip students with many molecular gene cs tools that are used widely in biomedical research. Students interested in computa onal analysis can help in the analysis of large RNA‐seq and ChIP‐seq data sets that are currently being collected.

Millions of people are suffering from coronary diseases, and this number is expected to increase in the next few decades. For a large por on of pa ents who are wearing or will need a stent (a stainless steel mesh tube) implanted inside of their coronary artery, it is essen al to design a biocompa ble safe stent material. In our lab, we aim to fabricate a biodegradable stent coa ng material: iron‐containing metal organic frameworks (Fe‐MOFs) on stainless steel. This new material is a porous thin film, composed of non‐toxic Fe ions connected by therapeu c dicarboxylate linkers. In this study, we will focus on the prepara on and characteriza on of surface‐supported Fe‐MOF films, as well as the evalua on of their biological stabili es. Moreover, model drugs used in conven onal drug‐elu ng stents will be evaluated in the powder Fe‐MOFs. Students will learn the basic thin film coa ng techniques, surface characteriza on, as well as drug loading and releasing measurements.

Students will be involved in fundamental research in nanotechnology. The BUILD scholar will perform with the other undergraduates the sample fabrica on, which is of great importance for good quality measurements. He or she will characterize the samples using an atomic force microscope. The BUILD scholar will also be involved in the electronic transport measurements performed at the lab. The BUILD scholar will be trained in equipment like the atomic force microscope and the op cal microscope, instruments largely used in the biology sciences. Catalyst for Ar ficial Photosynthesis: Ar ficial Photosynthesis is a subject where a device makes fuel from sunlight, water and carbon dioxide, mimicking photosynthesis. This involves the development of novel catalysts. Our focus is on the deep understanding of improving the Oxygen Evolu on Reac on (OER). We study the catalyst for this reac on. Our method is to use atomic level simula ons using density func onal theory (DFT). The catalyst must efficiently convert water and sunlight into energy. This could be be er understood at the atomic level by understanding how to reduce the ac va on energy for the intermediates of this reac on. Using simula ons, we can quickly scan for novel catalysts. A student in this group would need to have a background in chemistry, physics, and mathema cs. A computer background is recommended but not required.

As members of The Impact Group, students will engage in leading experimental (physical) dynamic impact research using the latest in low and high strain rate instrumenta on, high speed data collec on, and sophis cated finite element modeling so ware for virtually replica ng the real event through computer simula on. From the first day, students will be designing and machining custom parts, engaging in project management by coordina ng their work with other student groups and CSULB lab technicians, and leading research projects in developing newer and safer materials and designs for human protec on in extreme loading condi ons. This is a highly mul disciplinary team and all students regardless of background are expected to have familiarity with current machining prac ces (mill, lathe, all hand/power tools) and Matlab, Solidworks, and large data manipula ons custom programming scripts. These fundamentals will be forged through hand‐on training and students will leave The Impact Group with a solid understanding and training to: i. use virtually any subtrac ve or addi ve machining required in nearly every

engineering field; ii. capture high fidelity data, process, and then extract parameters for valida on

of physical and simulated experiments; iii. design, build, test, analyze, and op mize, and simulate transient impact

events on organic and inorganic materials; and iv. confidently lead a research team toward a common goal with heavy emphasis

on personal responsibility and integrity for all aspects related to the research project.

The ul mate goal of The Impact Group is to enable students to explore the physical world around them and show them the true meaning of an engineer‐‐ not as a series of equa ons in a book in a specific discipline, but as a progression from scholar to leader across a diverse breath of topics so that they may make a las ng impact in their lives and those around them for the be er.
