rom Klaeng, Highway 3 skirtsmountains and estuaries. The
highest of the peaks, Soi Dao Nua(1605m), lies to the north ofChantaburi's provincial capital.Waterfalls tumble off the jungle cladheights, the prominence of whichcreates large amounts of rainfall andhas helped the area become the fruitbasket of Bangkok. A fruit festivalcelebrates this fact in the harvest seasonat the beginning of May.
Attractions include Chantaburi City, the waterfalls in national parks andseveral beaches where seafoodrestaurants are numerous.
If you plan to visit the waterfalls,it is as well to note that they are lesscrowded during weekdays and at theirbest as the rainy season progresses.Reaching the different levels mayinvolve sweaty climbs through moist
evergreen jungle up sometimes slippery paths. Takeswimming gear to enjoy the cool pools.

Chantaburi(South turn at

Deposits near Bo Rai are largelyexhausted, but stones come from Phailinin Cambodia and elsewhere. Thedowntown gem trading area along SiChan Road throngs with traders onFridays and Saturdays.
Chantaburi was dominated by theKhmer from Angkor in the 14thcentury, and repeatedly invaded fromCambodia in the 16th century. In 1767Phraya Taksin occupied the city afterthe Burmese destruction of the Siamesecapital at Ayutthaya. From Chantaburihe began the campaign that was toforce the Burmese out of Siam andsecure the polity that evolved intomodern Thailand.
From the 18th century Chantaburiprovided a haven for Christians fleeing
persecution in Vietnam, and later the cityattracted many overseasChinese. The CatholicCathedral was com-pleted in 1909. It can bereached by footbridgeacross the river fromRim Nam Street, acharming narrow streetbest for walking andsampling the city’sChinese-Vietnamese ricenoodles. Chantaburi’snight market is also
within close walking distance. To the south-west of the city, Noen
Wong Fortress was built in 1843 todefend the increasingly wealthy area, but it had no chance of preventing theFrench from occupying Chantaburi andTrat provinces in 1893 as part of theircolonial expansion west of the RiverMekong in Cambodia and Laos. TheFrench left in 1907 when Siam finallyceded Battambang, Siem Reap andSisophon provinces to FrenchIndochina.
With the Fall of the France in 1940,Thai forces retook the lost provinces, though they suffered a naval defeat atKo Chang (there is a memorial nearLaem Ngop). In 1947, the provinceswere restored to the French.

Ko ChangKo Chang is the largest of more than40 islands that form an archipelagowhich became the Mu Ko ChangMarine National Park. Due togovernment intentions to make it aprime tourist destination, the island isundergoing rapid change.
Ko Chang's jungle clad ridgereaches over 700m in height and runsthe length of the island. A U shapedtwo-lane concrete road ( Be careful onthe very steep z bends to the south ofBan Khlong Son!) is being extendedand will be fully sealed from Ban RongThan and Ban Salak Phet round thenorthern head of the island down andaround to just east of Ban Bang Bao.The loop may be completed with afinal extension that will only be for useby mountain bicycles.
Three superb beaches are locatedon the west coast — Sai Khao, KhlongPhrao and Kai Bae. Than Mayom andKhlong Phlu Falls offer inlandattractions (park fees are collected) ,and there are some minor falls aroundAo Salak Phet. Ban Bang Bao and BanRong Than have good seafoodrestaurants in scenic locations.
Resorts are being developed
throughout the length of the west coastand inexpensive huts are still availablein keeping with the islands reputationas a haven for young travellers. Increa-singly, however, mid to up-marketresorts are occupying prime sites alongthe main beaches. Between these threemain beaches, rocky beach is common, especially at low tide.

Trat to Khlong Yai & Hat Lek(89 kms from Pointer 14)
Wat Buppharam to the west of theprovincial capital town of Trat is themain point of interest apart from thefresh market at the centre of town. TheBan Pu Resort, which has an unusual
location over man-grove forest and arestaurant with alocal reputation, isthe best accom-modation nearby.
The drive toKhlong Yai andHat Lek is fast, passing sandybeaches extendingfrom Laem Klad toKhlong Yai. Vir-tually any sideroad can get youto nearly desertedbeaches. How-ever, due to theirlocation in thebight formed byLaem Sok and thearchipelago, thebeaches are not asattractive as thoseon the islands. Thebest beach isfound at HatChuen (south turneither at KM.57 orKM59). Accom-modation is found
at Hat Muk Kaew (KM41) and alongthe old road between the sea and H318around KM67 to the north-west ofKhlong Yai District.
Apart from quiet coastal back-waters and rural hinterland, H318passes a small but unusual memorialmuseum at the site of a former refugeecamp at Khao Lan Ratchakarun(KM48). Khlong Yai (KM74) is a smalltown with wooden houses on streetsthat become increasingly narrow asthey approach the sea. A large fishingport is located a few kilometres to theeast at KM.80.
Hat Lek (KM89) is a border marketselling cheaper Russian, Chinese andVietnamese products as well as Frenchwines. To gamble at the Grand HotelCasino (Tel: (0) 3954 4383-5) just acrossthe border from Hat Lek, you will needa visa from the Cambodian Embassyin Bangkok (185 Ratchadamri Rd. Tel:(0) 2254 6630, Fax: (0) 2253 9859). Youmust leave your Budget Car on the Thaiside.

INSTRUCTIONS
o help you find your way through an unfamiliar landscape, the route isdivided into sections. Suggested routes are marked on the maps and
numbered pointers listed in sequence in the likely direction of travel.T
Kilometre references are noted intwo ways:
H3 KM13 = Kilometre stone 13 is thenearest kilometre marker onHighway 3 (Sukhumwit Highway).
(west turn — 3kms) If you are travel-ling north, this means you shouldturn left and drive 3kms to theindicated destination.
Fill up with petrol ! Before enteringback country roads, make sure you haveenough fuel. In deep country areas, filling stations are reduced to hand-pumps from barrels, which is incon-venient and more expensive.
Broken up and buckled roadsurface may sometimes be encounteredalong highways, but this is usually rareon main highways unless there is roadconstruction. Always be very carefuldriving through areas where there isroad construction, especially if you aredriving at night (we recommend youavoid driving at night in Thailand).Damaged road surface is commonlyfound on tertiary sealed roads in ruralareas. Avoid driving faster than 60kphon such roads and be ready to slowdown frequently.
4 WD Only! If you are driving avehicle that does not have four-wheeldrive, please do not enter roadsindicated as suitable for 4WD if drivingan ordinary sedan (it is not usuallynecessary to engage 4WD on most dirtroad).
Dirt roads are common in borderareas and the mountains, and importantunsealed routes are regularlymaintained. We recommend that youavoid dirt roads, in particular remoteones, as you will be responsible foranything that happens to vehicles offregularly maintained and pavedroadways. Should you go on a dirt road, however, please drive slowly to avoidmechanical problems and to keep thedust down, especially when passingpeople and driving through villages.
Remember to always take drinkingwater — allow for emergencies. A torchcan be useful as well as an umbrella orwarm clothing, depending on seasonand location.
Defensive driving. Be wary ofoncoming traffic when approaching thebrow of a hill or a blind corner, and beespecially vigilant for vehicles entering

ACCOMMODATION
Selected accommodation suggestsa range of places that stand out forambience, but many other places onthe map listings can be just as nice. Westrongly advise pre-booking accom-modation in the high season and duringfestivals.
Accommodation near the beach ischarged at a premium in Thailand, soeven 'cheap' rooms can cost between10 and 20 dollars per night, which canbe more than double the inlandequivalent.
Travel with enough cash to get youto the next ATM machine, which areusually found at banks in main districttowns (amphoe). Credit cards can beused at large gas stations and most mainresorts/hotels. Fuel prices are around15 Baht per litre (The baht/US dollarexchange rate is fluctuating around40-42 Baht=1US$)
Only indication prices for accom-modation are given, as rack rates changeaccording to the occupancy rate. Beprepared for an additional 17% ofgovernment taxes to be added onto ahotel bill. Walk-in rates are indicated asfollows: 6000 Baht up
3000-5999 Baht 1000-2999 Baht 0-999 Baht
NATIONAL PARKS
Foreigners are charged 200 Bht.(children 100 Bht.) entrance fee tonational parks in Thailand. If you canproduce a Thai driver’s license, you maybe charged at the rate for Thai people(20 Bht./adult 30 Bht./vehicle), but thisis uncertain. The entrance fee will allowyou to enter all sites in that park on thedate of purchase.
