Dot Day

2017

Mrs. Harrison and Mrs. White’s 4th grade class cele-brated "Dot Day" on Thurs-

day, September 21st by wearing dots - on their clothes, shoes, hair, wherever! The first week of school, they read The Dot and students created their own dot. "The Dot" is the story of a caring teacher who dares a doubting stu-dent to trust in her own abilities by being brave enough to “make her mark”.

The class celebrated "Dot Day" on the day of Open House, and asked parents to "make their mark" aby also creating a dot. (International Dot Day is celebrated on Sep-tember 15, but due to Hurricane Irma, it was postponed)

Attention 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th graders,

This is an optional STEM activity that students can participate in on their own time. This

first challenge is called "Float the Principal". Students are asked to design a boat out of

aluminum foil to see which one can hold the most weight in pennies. The winner will be

asked to replicate a full-size design of their boat that can float me in the pool. Other

schools will be here to see which design will float their principal. The rules, due dates and

design specifications are attached to the email version of this message. There will also

be copies in the front office if you don't receive the email. I'm looking forward (sort of) to

seeing how this challenge plays out.

NLP in partnership with Eagle Creek proudly presents 2017 STEM Challenge #1 – FLOAT THE PRINCIPAL Mr. Parker needs your help. He is experimenting with different types of materials he might use to build a boat. He is wondering if they could build a boat out of aluminum foil that would be able to float someone his size on water. When scientists embark on large pro-jects, they often build small versions (models) of the project to test before building the real version. Float the Principal is the first STEM Challenge of the 2017-18 school year. These annual challenges ask children to use science, technology, engineering and math to solve 3 dif-ferent real world problems throughout the year.

The due date for challenge participants is 10/9/2017. We will be testing student designs

over 2 days as NLP is a large school and it takes a while to test the number of partici-

pants. We look forward to seeing your awesome designs! The boat that holds the most

weight in the school will be scaled up to see if it can hold Mr. Parker on 10/19/2017! We

will be competing against other schools as well. Happy Building!

NorthLake Park’s

Annual Book Character Dress-Up Day

Dear Parents,

We will be having our eleventh annual Book Character Dress-Up Day on Tuesday, October

31st. Kindergarten, first, second and third grade students are allowed to dress up as their favorite story

book character. Participation is optional. However, uniforms are still required if you choose not to partici-

pate. Students will choose a character from their favorite book and come to school dressed as that charac-

ter. Students will need to bring the book and be prepared to share with their classmates about their

book and character.

Please make sure the costume will allow your child to participate in normal school activities such as PE, re-

cess, and using the stairs. Please, no accessories that resemble weapons and no gory costumes. Thank you

for your help in making this a fun, literacy related day!

Can you name the title of the book based on the characters pictured below?
