Session 1: Levansa Pelawatta and Shontel Pompeus Session 2: Alexander (Zander) Flint

Earth Camp 2016 was a very exciting season. While observing nature, it is no secret that the many species of flora and fauna resort to drastic measures to compete for survival. The same can be said for eager Earth Campers as they explored our island’s wetlands, woodlands, mead-ows and beaches last summer. By searching for the “find of the day” or identifying species using their bingo sheets, each earth camper worked as hard as he or she could to have the honor of being named “Earth Camper of the Year.”

Last year we had three “Earth Camper of the Year” awards to present. From Session I our winners were Levansa Pelawatta and Shontel Pompeus. Both of these young ladies are students at PS16 and Colgate Scholarship recipients. Often working together, they both won 14 bingo competitions each. Levansa and Shontel also became master bug hunters collecting dragonflies and butterflies.

Winning 13 bingo competitions and mastering our native plants and animals trivia is camper Zander Flint from Session II. Zander was able to identify 15 species of plants and animals as well as determine whether they were native, non-native or invasive species.

The natural scientists that founded the Staten Island Museum would be very proud of our Campers of the Year and would greatly value these young naturalists love for the bio-diverse island we call home.

ExhibitionsInfinite Compassion: Avalokiteshvara in Asian ArtThrough Fall 2018Staten Island Museum at Snug Harbor, 1000 Richmond Terrace, Building A

A collaboration with Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art, Infinite Compassion introduces visitors to Buddhist art, culture, and belief across Asia. After the Buddha, Avalokiteshvara is the most ubiquitous deity in Mahayana Buddhism. This revered Bodhisattva promotes compassion.

The exhibit interprets this aspect of Buddhist art with sculptures, ritual objects, and paintings (thangkas) from India, Tibet, China, Nepal, and Japan, as well as contemporary Asian art.

This exhibition has been made possible, in part, through support from the Institute of Museum and Library Services

Gracie Mansion: New York 1942

Why 1942? Because that’s the year in which Mayor Fiorello (Little Flower) La Guardia and his family moved into the gracious, newly renovated 1799 mansion that has since housed eleven mayoral families.

Chirlane McCray, the current First Lady of New York City, suggested that although the Federal style of the house should be respected, the art within it should reflect the people of New York City today. With that precept in mind, this is the second year-long, curated exhibition in a series, and the first to truly reflect all five boroughs of the City. The three works that Staten Island Mu-seum has on loan are dispersed throughout the mansion and will be seen by tour groups from elementary schools to adults from NYC, the USA, and the world.

On loan are Refugees by Arnold Hoffmann, a 1944 watercolor depicting the flight of families from World War II, which can stand for all war refugees. Hoffmann, an immigrant from Odessa himself, was very concerned about the impact of war and several of his pieces in the Staten Island Muse-um’s collection deal with themes related to war and the devastation it brings.

First Lady McCray singled this piece out as one of her favorite in the exhibition and in our brief chat we discovered a personal connection through our fathers, both veterans who served in Europe during World War II.

Cecil Bell was an artistic fixture on Staten Island, and one of his most popular images is his gouache painting entitled Shine!, which depicts one of the Italian immigrant shoe-shine men who used to ply the Staten Island Ferry. This painting hangs over a federal-style mantelpiece in one of the original rooms of Gracie Mansion, a far cry from the usual 19th century ancestor portrait or landscape that one expects to see in such a setting.

Last but not least, a recent acquisition that Staten Island Museum visitors will recognize from its appearance in Staten Island SEEN, our inaugural exhibition at Snug Harbor, New York Harbor (pictured below) by Louis Bouché. This oil on canvas depicts the working shores of Staten Island, with Manhattan in the distance.

It’s exciting to get our collection out to diverse audiences and to be part of this lively project. For more information on Gracie Mansion, the “People’s House” and its programs visit nyc.gov/gracietours.

The Never Ending Story of Service and Giving: Perpetuating What You Believe In

For 135 years, individual supporters have helped the Staten Island Museum grow into a strong community resource. The Museum was founded in 1881 by a group of hobby scientists and art collectors, preeminent among whom was William T. Davis and Charles W. Leng. Leng left the Museum priceless collection items, and Davis bequeathed his natural science collections and es-tablished a trust for their care. Through the years, supporters have continued to make charitable gifts by naming the Staten Island Museum in their wills.

Take for example Louise Colavito, whose vision of enriching the cultural life on Staten Island is perpetuated at the Museum. Louise was an enthusiastic Museum member, a community activist and longtime teacher, who worked at PS 39 for more than 30 years. Giving was part of Louise’s life. Her generosity continues today through her bequest that helped complete the Museum’s new building at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center. A gallery named in her honor reminds 40,000 annual visitors that individuals can make a huge impact, even beyond their lifetime.
