    Construction3.1

Electrical connection: The electrical connection is madevia a cable or a connector (see Ordering code on page 23or page 24).

BTL housing: Aluminum housing containing theprocessing electronics.

Mounting thread: The transducers with 10.2 mm havean additional thread at the end o the rod to support largernominal lengths. We recommend assembling thistransducer on the mounting thread:

    BTL7--A/B: M181.5BTL7--Y/Z: 3/4"-16UNF

Magnet: De ines the position to be measured on thewaveguide. Magnets are available in various models andmust be ordered separately (see accessories on page 21).

Nominal length: De ines the available measuring range.Rods with various nominal lengths rom 25 mm to7620 mm are available depending on the version:

10.2 mm: Nominal length rom 25 mm to 7620 mm 8 mm: Nominal length rom 25 mm to 1016 mm

Damping zone: Area at the end o the rod that cannot beused or measurements, but which may be passed over.

    Function3.2

The Micropulse Transducer contains the waveguide whichis protected by an outer stainless steel tube (rod). Amagnet is moved along the waveguide. This magnet isconnected to the system part whose position is to bedetermined.

The magnet de ines the position to be measured on thewaveguide.

An internally generated INIT pulse interacts with themagnetic ield o the magnet to generate a torsional wavein the waveguide which propagates at ultrasonic speed.

The component o the torsional wave which arrives at theend o the waveguide is absorbed in the damping zone toprevent re lection. The component o the torsional wavewhich arrives at the beginning o the waveguide isconverted by a coil into an electrical signal. The travel timeo the wave is used to calculate the position that is outputin antivalent orm as synchronous serial data (SSI) on theRS-422 inter ace. This is done with a high level o precisionand reproducibility within the measuring range indicated asthe nominal length.

In addition to the position output value, the ollowingunctions can be selected (only BTL7-S510(B)-...):

    Installing the transducer4.3

NOTICE!Inter erence in unctionImproper installation can compromise the unction o thetransducer and result in increased wear.

The mounting sur ace o the transducer must makefull contact with the supporting sur ace.

The bore must be per ectly sealed (O-ring/ at seal).f

Make a mounting hole with thread (possibly withcountersink or the O-ring) acc. to Fig. 4-3 or Fig. 4-4.

Screw the transducer with mounting thread into themounting hole (max. torque 100 Nm).Install the magnet (accessories).

For nominal lengths > 500 mm: Tighten the outer rodat the end (only possible with 10.2 mm) or support it.

Suitable nuts or the mounting thread areavailable as accessories (see page 21).

    Installation recommendation or hydraulic4.3.1cylinders

I you seal the hole with a lat seal, the max. operating

pressure will be reduced in accordance with the largerpressurized sur ace.I installing horizontally in a hydraulic cylinder (nominallengths > 500 mm), we recommend a ixing a slidingelement to protect the rod end rom wear.

Dimensioning o the detailed solutions is theresponsibility o the cylinder manu acturer.

The sliding element material must be suitable or theappropriate load case, medium used, and applicationtemperatures. E.g. Torlon, Te lon or bronze are all possiblematerials.

Fig. 4-5: Example 1, transducer installed with sliding element

The sliding element can be screwed on or bonded.Secure the screws so they cannot be loosened or lost.

    Select a suitable adhesive.

Detailed view and top view o sliding elementFig. 4-6:

There must be a gap between the sliding element andpiston bore that is su iciently large or the hydraulic oil tolow through.

    Shielding and cable routing4.5

De ined ground! The transducer and the control cabinet must beat the same ground potential.

Shielding To ensure electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), observethe ollowing:

Connect the transducer and controller using a shieldedcable.Shielding: Copper ilament braided, at least 85%coverageConnector version: Shield is interally connected toconnector housing.Cable version: On the transducer side, the cableshielding is connected to the housing.Ground the cable shielding on the controller side(connect with the protective earth conductor).

Magnetic ields The position measuring system is a magnetostrictivesystem. It is important to maintain adequate distancebetween the transducer cylinder and strong, externalmagnetic ields.

Cable routingDo not route the cable between the transducer, controller, and power supply near high voltage cables (inductive straynoise is possible).

The cable must be routed tension- ree.

Bending radius or ixed cable The bending radius or a ixed cable must be at least ivetimes the cable diameter.

For notes on cable length, see Technical dataon page 20, Fig. 8-2.

    SSI inter ace6

Principle6.1SSI stands or Synchronous Serial Inter ace and describesa digital synchronous inter ace with a di erential clock lineand a di erential data line. With the irst alling cycle edge, the data word to be outputis bu ered in the BTL7 to ensure data consistency. Dataoutput takes place with the irst rising cycle lank, i.e. thetransducer supplies a bit to the data line or each risingcycle edge. In doing so, the line capacities and delays o drivers t v when querying the data bits must be taken intoaccount in the controller.

The max. clock requency CLK is dependent on the cablelength (see Technical data on page 20, Fig. 8-2). The t mtime, also called mono lop time, is started with the lastalling edge and is output as the low level with the lastrising edge. The data line remains at low until the t m timehas elapsed. A terwards, the BTL7 is ready again toreceive the next clock package.

With the BTL7, position data is determined and output in atimely manner and synchronous to the external samplingperiod. For synchronous operation, the sampling period T A must be in the range T A,min T A 16 ms. The BTL7switches to asynchronous operation outside o this range.I the minimum sampling time is undercut, the BTL7outputs the same position value several times. Theexternal sampling rate is then greater than the internal rate.In addition, T A must be long enough so that the next clockpackage does not occur in the t m range o the previouspackage.

    Synchronous and asynchronous operation6.4Synchronous operation

A uni orm and brie timing is o ten required or controlapplications. The position delay t D must be kept as shortand constant as possible. Synchronous operation is thusintended or closed control loops. Here, the internalsensing cycle adjusts itsel to the external sampling cycle.

The ollowing graphic clari ies this relationship:

Two boundary conditions must be taken into accountduring synchronous operation: The external sampling requency A must be in the range62.5 Hz < A < A,max . The maximum permissible samplingrequency A,max is shown in Fig. 8-1 on page 20.

The sampling requency must be kept as constant aspossible.

The sampling requency is the reciprocal valueo the time between two clock packages andmay not be con used with the SSI clockrequency.

Asynchronous operationDuring asynchronous operation, the external samplingrequency is independent o the internal samplingrequency o the transducer. Depending on the externalquery point, the position is more or less current and theposition delay t D is not constant. In the worst case, it isequal to the internal sampling period. The transduceralways works with the maximum possible internal samplingrequency. Due to the measuring principle, the maximumsampling requency A,max is dependent on the nominallength o the transducer.

The ollowing graphic shows the behavior o internal andexternal sampling in asynchronous operation:
