2013 BRUNELLO is a vintage that will go down in history. The season was a much-needed change of pace from previous, hotter, dryer years. It was a long and slow growing season which saw overall cool temperatures, with abundant rainfall in the spring and summer, and sunshine and light breeze in September and October. Unlike recent years, the end of summer saw no heat spikes and instead stayed relatively stable in temperature, which fostered the ideal conditions for ‘classic’ Brunello. The wines from this vintage are balanced with vibrant acidity, firm tannins, fragrant and elegant with incredible aging potential. Francesco Buffi of Baricci says of the 2013 vintage, “It’s a textbook Brunello, the kind of vintage we greet with open arms. When compared to warmer vintages, 2013 shows another side of Sangiovese that’s all about finesse, freshness, and vibrancy, characteristics seen less due to climate change.”

LA PODERINAFounded in 1988, La Poderina is located in the Castelnuovo dell’Abate zone of Montalcino, an area noted for the elegance and balance of its grapes. The estate resides southeast of Montalcino’s historic town center and consists of consists of 120 acres. Specialized in the cultivation of Sangiovese Grosso, La Poderina has 25 acres of vineyards dedicated to the production of Brunello, 11 acres of vineyards dedicated to the production of Rosso di Montalcino and 11 acres of vineyards dedicated to the production of Sangiovese. La Poderina has an integrated philosophy that incorporates innovative techniques in order to further Mon-talcino’s traditional wines. To this end, La Poderina ages its wines in both French barriques and larger botti, giving the final wines restrained oak notes that still showcase unique characteristics of this region’s Sangio-vese. Yield levels are careful monitored in order to cultivate concentrated flavor profiles. Each vine produces yields far below the guidelines set out by the appellation.

PRODUCTION AREA: Southeast side of Castelnuovo dell’Abate, Montalcino (SI)

SOIL: Medium loam with some clay deposits and organic matter

VINIFICATION: Manual harvest in boxes with separa-tion of grapes by type and plot; fermentation and mac-eration in stainless steel tanks for 20 days at controlled temperature (24-28°C) with daily pumping and delast-age; at the end of alcoholic fermentation, post-macera-tion period is continued bringing the temperature to 29°

C for about 48; immediately after racking, even with its fine lees, wines are transferred into French oak barrels and large casks of Slavonian oak. where malolactic fermentation will carry out and will undergo weekly batonnage for the next 5 months; it will still in wood for 20 months

TASTING NOTES, BRUNELLO 2013:The taste is intense and strong, slightly tannic because still youth, soft and persistent. To serve at 18°C in large glasses. Perfect with roasted white or red meat, poultry, game and aged cheeses.

2014: A rainy winter was followed by a cool spring interspersed by high temperatures. Budbreak came early, but cool weather and frequent hailstorms in the summer caused disease throughout the vineyards, such as downy mildew. September and October were mild and dry. The wines are expected to be lighter than those from 2013.

2015: Rainy, cold winter months were followed by a inconsistent spring conditions. Summer was scorchingly hot and dry, which drastically reduced Sangiovese yields. Several August hailstorms added to the problem.

2016: The growing season began with cool, wet weather. In July, weather suddenly turned hot and dry with August rainstorms relieving vine stress. Overall it was a good vintage, with yields reduced by about a fifth of what’s considered normal.

2017: An overall difficult vintage that saw unusual frost in April, and extreme heat and drought in the summer. The fruit was of high quality, but there will be very low production.

FUTURE BRUNELLO VINTAGES: WHAT TO EXPECT

CAMIGLIANO

FOSSACOLLE

Camigliano is one of the most historic estates in Montalcino. Acquired in 1957 by entrepreneur Walter Ghe-zzi, Camigliano was converted over time to the production of high quality wines, in particular of Brunello di Montalcino. The 1,300 acre estate is planted with over 220 acres of vineyards, 200 of which are Sangiovese vineyards. His son Gualtiero put a lot of effort into the modernizing the company. Through the construction of a new subterranean cellar and the demolition of the previous building, Camigliano restored streets and panoramic views, and regained an astonishing landscape of the high Maremma for the medieval town of 32 residents. Camigliano’s annual production of 350,000 bottles is predominantly Rosso di Montalcino and Brunello di Montalcino. Camigliano also makes a limited production of Gualto Brunello di Montalcino Riserva and Campo ai Mori Sant’Antimo.

Owner Sergio Marchetti belongs to an old patriarchal family of the 18th century. The family’s descen-dants have lived and farmed on this land for generations. In the 1980s, the owner of the lands gifted Fos-sacolle to the family when he sold the properties. Fossacolle is four hectares of vineyards in the medieval town of Tavernelle in southern Montalcino. This area benefits from the wind of nearby Maremma which creates a perfect climate to grow and to mature grapes. Sergio and his family manage the vineyards and his son-in-law, Adriano Bambagioni, with the help of his son Stefano, carry out all the enological and commercial aspects of Fossacolle.

PRODUCTION AREA: Camigliano (southwest of Montalcino)

SOIL: Clay with good percentage of limestone and silt.

VINIFICATION: 5000 plants per hectare, cordon-trained and spur-pruned; fermentation in stainless steel at a controlled temperature with racking and delestage, maceration 21-25 days; 24 months in wood (French and Slavonian) oak barrels from 30-60 HL

TASTING NOTES, BRUNELLO 2013:A wealth of fruit yet remains fresh and vivid with blueberry and black cherry character. Some bark and dried earth. Full body, integrated tannins and a flavorful finish. the elegance and harmonic body of the wine permit its combination with many complex and complicated dishes such as red meat, feathered and furry game .Brunello, in addition, is excellent with cheeses, parmesan, Tuscan pecorino.

PRODUCTION AREA: near Tavernelle

SOIL: Medium textured, soil tending to clay and lime-stone with some layers of tuff.

VINIFICATION: Harvested end of September 2013. The alcoholic fermentation took place rigorously under temperature controlled conditions with an extended maceration and frequent pump-overs, punch-downs and delestages to optimize the extraction from the skins. The malolactic fermentation is completed in concrete vats before an ageing phase of at least 24 months in wood. Aged in French and Slavonian oak casks of 25 HL for 24 months and in second usage French barriques of 225

L; the wine matured for another year in glass-lined cement vats. A mere static settling, but no filtration, complete the wine making process.

TASTING NOTES, BRUNELLO 2013:Its color is intense ruby and the aromas are of mature fruit, sustained in the palate by great complexity. The tannins are noteworthy; silky and oily, persistent. A wine of optimal equilibrium elegance and complexity, it will increase its bouquet after a moderate time in bottle. Great with well-structured dishes such as red meat, and game accompanied by mushrooms or truffles. A good match could also be with seasoned cheeses.

SALVIONI

2013 SCORE CHART

Surrounded by woodland, the 20 hectares of La Cerbaiola look out over the Val d’Orcia from an altitude of 420 metres, opening up like a gently sloping plateau four kilometres to the southeast of Montalcino. The air is clear, a slight breeze rustles the leaves, and on the hillside opposite the outlines of Pienza, San Quirico and Ripa d’Orcia are clearly visible. There are three small vineyards for a total of 4 hectares, each with its own character-istics: soils that vary from chalky schist to stony marl; and subtle differences of micro-climate that influence the ripening of the grapes. All the work in the vineyard is carried out by hand, with hard pruning to obtain low yields of fruit and careful selection during the manual harvest. Production is deliberately limited, to obtain the very best from a unique terroir: 10,000 bottles a year when only Brunello is made; and 15,000 for the years in which there is also some Rosso di Montalcino.

PRODUCTION AREA: Village of Montalcino

SOIL: Galestro (marl)

VINIFICATION: The difference in ages of the vines de-termines their characteristics starting from the density of plants per hectare which, in the oldest vineyard is 3,000/ha with a planting distance of 3m while in the young-est vineyard there is a density of 5,000/ha with 2.5m between the vines. We use a simple cordon spur training system for the younger vines and a double cordon in the oldest vineyard where the distance between vines is larger. Pruning leaves only one bud, which results in a significant reduction in the quantity of fruit. Stainless

steel tanks for 30 days (27-31°C). Maceration 30 days with frequent delestages. Aged in Slavonian oak barrels of 20 Hl (10-20 years old) for 4 years, 6 months in bottle.

TASTING NOTES, BRUNELLO 2013: Ruby red color with garnet hints. Very intense and complex nose with notes of ripe fresh fruit such as cherry and black cherry, on a spicy and fresh background of sweet tobacco and aromatic herbs. The sip is smooth, well rounded with a great structure and sweet integrated tannins. Long, mineral, fruity finish. Great with game, red meat, aged cheese.

The newest addition to the Vias portfolio, hailing from the Montosoli hill

INTRODUCING

Montosoli is probably the most sought-after site in the whole of Montalcino. It is a small hill on the north side of the village with a meso-climate that, miracu-lously, is drier in wet vintages and cooler in very hot ones. The Baricci family has been making wine here on its 5ha property since the 1950s. Founder of the estate, Nello Baricci is a legendary figure. In the 1960s he was one of the first producers in Mon-talcino to introduce temperature-controlled, stainless steel fermenting vats. Nello Baricci was also the FIRST of the original 26 founders of the Associa-tion of the Brunello di Montalcino in 1967. At that time he was considered a pioneer; today, the style he created is regarded as one of the most traditional of the denomina-tion, which just goes to prove the adage that every tradition begins life as a successful innovation. Baricci’s grandchildren are hands-on at the estate now: Francesco Buffi in the vineyard and Federico Buffi in the cellar, although on a family estate everybody helps with everything. Baricci wines are rarely deeply coloured and if you do not give them a chance to breathe they can seem a bit simple and inexpres-sive, but when they open up they reveal a rarefied elegance, layer

after layer of texture and aroma, and a finish that lasts forever. Baricci Brunello is situated on the most prestigious location in Mon-

talcino, the Montosoli Hill, and it is one of the truest examples of what a Brunello should be. Manual harvested, Baricci Brunello comes from a very high selection of the best grapes. The difference of temperature between night and day on Montosoli Hill helps perfect the balance between the level of sugars and acidity.

PRODUCTION AREA: Northern Montalcino; E-S/E slope of Montosoli Hill

SOIL: Galestro terrain, mixture of Quartz, Schist and Sandstone, generally loose.

VINIFICATION: Harvested October 6th-8th, 2013. Manual harvesting with grape selec-tion. Traditional system, light pressing, alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks of 28-30°C with racking. Maceration 21 days. Malolactic Fermenta-tion in steel tanks before moving to the barrels. 36 months in Slavonian oak barrels of 40 HL.

TASTING NOTES, BRUNELLO 2013: Ruby red, tends to garnet red with ageing. Persistent nose, recalls of fleshy fruit. Faded violet and rose follow with linearity and pleasantness. Taste is powerful, juicy, tannin is protagonist, vertical and persistent, with berries remaining lively with a dynamic taste-olfaction trail. Long and fruity finale. Perfect accompaniment to red roast meat, noble game and aged cheeses. A wine for meditative contemplation. Must be served to a temperature of about 18/20 degrees C. Best to open 3 hours before drinking.
