The Eagle Valley School
oard held a special meeting on
une 24 to handle a variety of
ressing business, and to bid
arewell to Interim Supt. Tom
mes. Ames served the dis-
rict for just a few weeks, but
was tremendously effective in
athering and analyzing infor-
mation for the school board and
he administrative team to use.His service to Eagle Valley ended
une 30.
Ames is superintendent of two
ther small districts Parkers
rairie and Truman. During his
more than 30 years as a superin-
endent in many districts, he
eveloped a computerized school
istrict budgeting program that
presents users with a way to see
how changes in funding, number
of students, levy amounts, etc.,
would affect other aspects of the
district.
Ames shared this program
with the Eagle Valley School
Board on June 24, explaining
how several different scenarios
of student numbers, teacher pay,
and levy amounts would affect
the district. He showed examplesof changes at Parkers Prairie,
using his software program and
compared the two districts and
their needs.
Board Chair Sharon Notch
said, Youve done so much for us
in such a short time. Thank
you.
Ames replied, Its been my
honor.
Board members and staff
present saluted Ames with a
round of applause. Everyone
seemed grateful to Ames for his
professionalism, knowledge, and
work ethic. He came to Eagle
Valley during a time of crisis in
May after the sudden resigna-
tion of the previous interim
superintendent. He helped dis-
trict administrators prepare abudget for 2013-2014, and a pro-
jected budget for 2014-2015.
Also during the special meet-
ing, board members heard the
recommendation of Principal
Barry Johnson to hire Jessica
Fenlason for the ag/shop teach-
ing position. After hearing

Eagle Valley School Board bidsarewell to Interim Supt. Tom Ames

The late spring and excessive
rain have wrecked most farmers
hopes for a good year in 2013.
Planting took place late, if at all.
Spraying of ag chemicals and
applying fertilizer have been
delayed. Cattle are eating more
feed than usual and developing
foot problems from standing on
wet ground. It seems like just
about everything is going wrong
for Central Minnesota farm
operations in 2013.
Farmers Co-op Feed Store
manager Jerome Koehn
explained, Farmers arent get-
ting their corn in. Two guys
brought all their seed back.
Theyre going to let the grass
grow and run cattle in it. June
10 was the cut-off date for plant-
ing, but some are still planting
corn for silage.
Dave at Pro-Ag in Clarissa
said, The fields are so wet were
having trouble spraying. Weeds
are getting the fertilizer instead
of the corn, and with the wind
today, we cant spray at all. We
cant get in the fields, and its too
wet for top dressing fertilizer in
fields. Theres a lot of idle acres
that never got planted. Some of
the guys will plant no crop at all
this year. Were having trouble
getting hay. Its too wet to bale.
Brenda Ganz at Farm Service
Agency in Long Prairie told us
that according to figures she
received, about 30% to 40% of
the crop acres in Todd County
are unplanted at this point.
More soybeans are unplanted
than corn, she said, and corn
that was planted during the
warm days in mid-May are now
drowned in wet fields.
Ganz said haying is reported-ly going OK, but farm equip-
ment is making tracks and ruts
in the fields, killing off the
plants.
Howard Tyrrell and his fami-
ly, who farm in Ward Township,
told us, We got our crops in on
our sandy land, but were a full
month behind. If we dont have
perfect weather and a late fall,
weve got a disaster in the mak-
ing.
He said, Its no different now
than it was in the 1930s.
Tyrrell was a teenager during
the Depression, and remembers
the weather extremes that farm-
ers experienced then.
As far as hay is concerned,
Tyrrell said, If we dont get
warmer and dryer weather, two
cuttings is all therell be. This is
the only area that has hay. We
wont have to buy feed because
we raise more crops than we
sell, but other farmers may
have to.
Jim Lunemanns Beef
Roundup newsletter advised
beef cattle owners, The grass is
growing fast which is good, but
the ground was so wet we are
now seeing foot problems on the
cows and the calves are consum-
ing so much in wet feed (milk
and pasture) they are actually
scouring [getting diarrhea] from
a lack of fiber!
The June 24 USDA Crops and
Weather Report for Minnesota
stated, Wet conditions contin-
ued to delay crop progress
behind the five-year average for
Minnesota farmers during the
week ending June 23, 2013.
The report also said, Corn
planting is nearly finished at 96
percent complete. And
despite the wet conditions, soy-
bean planting advanced 10 per-
centage points to 94 percent
complete.

Ripley archery huntsThe Minnesota Department of
Natural Resources (DNR) is
accepting applications between

military training needs, the dates
for this years hunts are being held
about a week later than usual.

What is aConservation Plan?
A Conservation Plan is a written
ecord of your farm as a whole.
his includes crop rotations, tillage

Now is the time to take ahunter safety course
With the fall hunting seasons
just around the corner, the
Minnesota Department of Natural
Resources (DNR) urges hunters to
sign up now for a hunter education
class."Though classes are held
throughout the year, their numbers
peak in the summer and early fall,"
said Capt. Mike Hammer, DNR
Enforcement Division education
program coordinator. "So now is
the time to sign up and complete a
course, because once the hunting
season gets rolling, it might be too
late."
Besides ensuring the ability to
hunt this year, taking the class
sooner rather than later means
more time for scouting hunting
locations, sighting-in rifles, practic-
ing shotgun skills and securing
permission to hunt on privatelands.
Minnesota hunters born after
Dec. 31, 1979, must take a DNR
hunter education firearms safety
training course and receive a cer-
tificate of completion before buying
a license for big or small game.
Classes are taught by DNR cer-
tified volunteers in their local com-
munities. Students, depending on
their age, have a few options to
become certified. Regardless of
which option they choose the
course provides them with basic
safe firearms handling skills,
wildlife identification, outdoor
skills and responsibility thataccompanies hunting and firearms
use.

Making jams and jelliesBy Deb Botzek-Linn is a food
safety educator with the
University of Minnesota
Extension
Carrot cake jam, champagne
blush jelly, fresh herb jelly, moms
apple pie in a jarthese are some
of the many exciting new varieties
of jams and jellies that home food
preservers are putting up.
Quality fruit produces quality
jam or jelly. Begin with fruit at its
peak of ripeness. This is not the
place to use up overripe or
decayed fruit. Making jam or jelly
is a balance of fruit with the addi-
tion of pectin, along with sugar and
acid, usually lemon juice.
Blackberries, crabapples, or con-
cord grapes are examples of fruits
naturally containing pectin and
acid and can be cooked into jamwithout additional ingredients.
Pectin, the gelling agent, comes
either in powdered or liquid form,
along with a low-sugar option.
These forms of pectin are not inter-
changeable in jam or jelly recipes.
Know that a box of pectin contains
informative fruit gel directions
along with many recipes to get you
started.
A great place to start, if you are
new to making gel products, is with
strawberry or raspberry freezer or
refrigerator spread. These are no-
cook jams with guaranteed success!
Again, you can begin with a pectin
box recipe or other reliable source.Jam and jelly which is cooked, is
preserved in 1/2 pint canning jars
with a 2-piece ring and lid. Process
the filled jars for 5 minutes in a
boiling water bath canner. This
final step helps form a seal on the
jar, destroys yeast and mold, and
extends shelf life.
Making jam and jelly is chem-istry in action thus, proportions are
critical when making gelled fruit
products, so follow the recipe and
measure carefully. When cooking
jelly remember that it should be
boiled rapidly, not simmered, for
the length of time given in the
recipe.
Your jelly didnt gel? No prob-
lem, you have created a tasty top-
ping for ice cream, waffles, pan-
cakes and more!

There is a one-celled animal called Chaos Chaos which is different from any other
creature. Being amorphous, but with three nuclei, it will often try to go in more than
one direction at a time, stretching itself to great lengths before pulling back into
"shape" and going in only one direction. When it reproduces, it becomes three small-
er creatures, not two.
If you cut the head off a cockroach, it can continue to live for many weeks.
Do cats pretend they are people? Consider Anya. She is a half-Siamese kitty who is full-grown,and just less than a year old. When her owner steps out of the shower and turns off the water, she
steps into the wet bathtub, shakes her feet a little bit, and then just sits there facing the shower-
head for about five minutes. What is she thinking? When Anya's owners ask her to "do a summ-
ersault," she usually complies. She will tip her head down to the rug, and then roll over. She seems
to like to please her owner. One day her owner was fooling around with 360 degree pirouettes, like
dancers do. Anya saw that, and then turned around exactly 360 degrees two separate times with-
in a few minutes.

Bacon Asparagus Pizza
5 thick slices bacon, cut into 1 1 unbaked pizza crust
inch pieces 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1 cup chopped fresh asparagus 1 cup halved cherry or grape tomatoes1 teaspoon red pepper flakes Black pepper to taste
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
Place bacon in a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook for a few minutes
to release most of the grease, but do not cook until crisp. Remove to paper
towels to drain.
Spread the pizza crust out on a pizza pan or large baking sheet. Top with
mozzarella cheese, bacon pieces, asparagus, and tomatoes. Dot with goat
cheese, then season with red pepper flakes and black pepper.
Bake for 15 to 20 minutes in the preheated oven, until the crust is gold-
en brown underneath when you lift it up to take a peek. Let cool for about
5 minutes before slicing and serving.
I love bacon, I love asparagus, I love pizza--so whats not to love about
this recipe? I made it last week and Sonny said, You can make that again,
that was good!

After a column I wrote a couple of weeks ago about enjoy-
ing watching the deer nurse its fawn, I have been asked by
more than one person, If you agree deer are beautiful ani-
mals and you enjoy seeing them in their natural state, how
can you hunt them? The answer is really quite simple. They
are tasty. I also enjoy the challenge of outwitting a smart old
buck, especially using the skills required to take one with a
bow.
Deer hunting was part of the survival skills several hun-
dred years ago. If you were not able to put a deer or two awayfor the winter, you and your family ate turnips and corn until
spring. I rather enjoy turnips myself, but I can see where
turnips three times a day, with a handful of corn thrown in
would get really boring and not be what we would consider a
balanced diet. People that were good hunters were strong and
healthy. Those that could not hunt pretended they liked eating turnips all the time and
ecame vegetarians. Most of us are descended from those who hunted well and raised
many children. There are a few vegetarians that survived through the ages, but not many.
Even most of those that think hunting is no longer necessary are carnivores. Rather than
e the ones to go out and harvest their own meat, they buy it in the grocery store in neat
ittle packages. There is no difference.
About the time of Teddy Roosevelt, one of the first great conservationist, people started
noticing a decline in wild game such as deer, geese, and elk. Laws were put into effect to
egulate hunting and taxes were imposed on guns, ammunition, and all types of outdoors
gear to fund enforcement and provide habitat. Since that time, wildlife has flourished
ecause people that enjoy the outdoors activities of hunting and fishing were willing tound it.
Today, we have more trees in the United States than we did at the time of the pilgrims.
We have more deer, turkey, and pheasants than were ever in this country. As an added ben-
fit, we have more song birds and other wildlife that has benefited from the habitat creat-
d for game species.
I do not have to hunt to survive. My family wont go hungry this winter if I dont hunt.
They will not even be forced to live on turnips. I hunt because I can and enjoy the results.
For generations, the game herd has been built up to where it is good to thin them out.
Taking an animals life is something every true hunter thinks about. We want it to be clean
and painless. We want it to be fair. We respect the animal weve taken and use what we
an. I hate to see a deer at the side of the road that has been hit by a car. All that meat is
wasted, the deer didnt have a chance, and the collision didnt do somebodys car a bit of
good.
I know not everyone agrees with me about hunting. Thats fine. I wont make them go
hunting to get their next meal. Following the rules set up by conservationists over the
years, ll do my part to keep the deer herd to a manageable size to help prevent disease andattrition from cars. Just to be fair, I did plant a large turnip patch just in case my deer
hunt is not completely successful.
Why do we hunt?

New website launches for Minnesota Veterans
The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs has announced the launch of their
ewly redesigned website at MinnesotaVeteran.org. In its continuing effort to be in the
refront of providing the best service and care for the states 370,000 Veterans, MDVA
excited to present this new and improved resource to a broad audience of Veterans,
milies, community, state and federal leaders, members of the media, and the com-
unity at large.MDVA partnered with High Monkey Consulting (HMC), based in Roseville Minn., on
evelopment of the new design. Over the last year they worked with staff across MDVA
support the Departments mission of Serving Minnesota Veterans and their fami-
es. Created specifically with Veterans and families in mind, the website is designed
be user friendly with improved navigation that will serve as a vehicle to help
Minnesotans get timely information and news.
This website provides a vibrant, seamless view of our department and the resources
vailable to Minnesota Veterans. This is just another example of how were committed
making Minnesota Government better for Veterans who served, as well as those who
ontinue to serve. The end result of our new MDVA website was based largely on feed-
ack from our stakeholders - the Veterans we serve - alongside extensive research and
sting that has brought us to this unveiling, said Larry Shellito, MDVA
ommissioner.
Featuring a nostalgic retro design, the home page of the site welcomes online users
ith a rotating carousel of featured items that include women Veterans, the Support
ur Troops license plates, Veteran employment and more. The structure is divided between major menu items of About, News, Benefits &
esources, Memorials & Burials, Veterans Homes, LinkVet Support, and a new Blog.
Visitors and users can find out how to request discharge papers, learn about the GI Bill,
access employment resources, take a virtual tour of any of the five State Veterans
Homes, subscribe to the new blog, learn about state Veteran memorials, start a live chat
and much more. The site also incorporates video and multimedia elements, a new
pressroom, LinkVets FAQ Veteran support portal and more.
State Veterans Homes
The site also includes a vast amount of information on the five State Veterans
Homes, which provide skilled nursing care and domiciliary board and care to this
countrys heroes. When the Minnesota Veterans Homes merged with the Minnesota
Department of Veterans Affairs in 2007 the websites were also merged. With the
redesign, the information is now accurately blended and unified, creating one seamless
experience for the user. Highlights include virtual tours, details about admissions, care
and services, the history of the Homes and how the community and families can getinvolved.
This site is a reflection of everything the Homes represent, which is the best care
possible for our nations heroes. As they navigate the new site, users will experience our
important shift to Resident-centered care provided at each of our five Homes. Veterans
and their family members can utilize this site to make important decisions about long-
term care, said Michael J. Gallucci, MDVA Deputy Commissioner of the Veterans
Health Care Division.
PROGRAMS AND SERVICES
The benefits and resources section of the redesigned website offers Veterans and
families information on topics including education, employment, health & disability,
burials, assistance and other state and federal resources.
This website is a symbol of our continued dedication to deliver pertinent informa-
tion in a timely manner. Its also our responsibility to present this information in a set-
ting that is easy to find, said Reggie Worlds, MDVA Deputy Commissioner of Programs
and Services.
The site will promote and be accessible through the URL ofwww.MinnesotaVeteran.org, but will also be accessible through the official state web-
site address mn.gov/mdva.

Hi,
I said it a couple of weeks ago...Before you know it
Browerville Days would be here and gone. I personally am
glad its over, but it sure did turn out to be a good time.
Everyone involved from the coordinators, vendors, volunteers,
and even the Blade reporters put in a lot of hours on this
event each year, and we thank them all. I know, as I heard
some complaining, that you cant please everyone all the time.
But, I believe this years celebration was a success, and
enjoyed by all who attended. We were also blessed with some
of the best weather conditions I can remember in recent years
for this years event.
New this year was the addition of bull riding. I for one have
to admit that I was a little skeptical upon hearing this. I was
wrong. I ended up staying and watching the entire event and
found it to be very entertaining. I would never consider strap-
ping myself to a 1,000 pound plus animal that doesnt want
me there, or even possibly alive for that matter. Those guys
are NUTS!
Thursday is already the 4th of July and sounds like it is
supposed to be a great day. As many of you head to the lakes, parks or relatives to celebrate, think of me as I am at home
pressure washing and staining my decks. Not something I
want to do, but they need to be done. We will be having a
BBQ at our house on the 6th, and I am looking forward to
having a relaxing day with family and friends. Jordan and
Nicholas are even coming home for the weekend.
I have had very little time for fishing, but I am hopeful I can
fix that after I catch up on a few of my outdoor projects that
are still unfinished.
I am going to keep this short. Its already Monday after-
noon and we are working on finishing up another edition.
I will write again later. Stay cool.....
Aaron
