BROOKVLLE LAKE

Brilliant colors, soaring eagles and majestic wind-blown sails are just a sampling of life on beautiful Brookville Lake. Located in the picturesque Whitewater Valley with the East Fork of the Whitewater River as its source, Brookville Lake continues to be one of the Tri-State area’s most popular attractions. Stretching for 17 miles from north to south, Brookville Lake attracts more than 2 million visitors each year who spend their weekends and holidays boating, fishing, sailing, swimming, hiking, hunting or just relaxing in the splendor of 11,000 acres of pristine lake waters, wildlife habitat, and wetlands.

Watercraft of all types, including sailboats, speed boats, fishing boats, pontoons, cabin cruisers, kayaks, and wave runners, share the waters of the 5,260 acre lake; the wide open areas are perfect for water skiing and sailing, while the quiet, hidden coves offer refuge for fisherman and leisure boaters. You will also find sailors, fishermen, kayakers, and house boats taking advantage of the large “no wake” zone at the north end of the lake. Another section of the lake is protected as a waterfowl resting area and closed October through February, while throughout the surrounding wooded hills there are 25 miles of hiking trails, ranging from “easy” to “rugged”. Nature lovers and boat enthusiasts are all welcome at Brookville Lake.

Brookville Lake continues to be a popular family destination with two State Recreation Areas, two swimming beaches and more than

400 campsites. Nearby B&B’s and other area lodging provide an alternative to camping, giving overnight visitors an opportunity to combine their outdoor adventures with a little extra comfort. Two other major attractions on the lake are its privately-operated 18-hole golf course and full-service lake-front restaurant.

The lake lies in the historic east fork of the Whitewater River Valley with a maximum depth of 140’ and an average depth of 30’. The Federal Government purchased the land for flood control and also to provide a place for wildlife and recreation. Construction of the lake began in 1965 and the reservoir began operating in 1974. The reservoir is managed by the Corps of Engineers while the land surrounding the reservoir is leased to the State of Indiana which manages the recreational facilities. Because no building is allowed on surrounding land, visitors have a 360 degree view of unspoiled forested hills and foliage. After 40 years, most of the 11,000 acres of land has returned to its natural state and a large variety of plants and wildlife can be found all around the lake.

The Brookville Lake is part of the Indiana Brookville Lake -Whitewater Memorial State Park Complex offering:FISHING

Brookville Lake is known nationally for recreational and sport fishing, and as many as 7,000 walleye are caught each year with many ranging from 24-29 inches. Brookville Walleye are

BROOKVLLE LAKEAnnual fishing tournaments are held at Brookville Lake where state records have been set for striped bass and muskellunge. For the folks who enjoy fishing, but do not want to bring their boat or equipment, professional guide services are available.

One other major fishing attraction for Brookville Lake area is its fly fishing. The East Fork of the Whitewater River is the primary feeder to the Brookville Reservoir, and the lake’s cool tail waters have created one of the Tri-State’s most top-rated fly fishing spots. Working together, the US Corps of Engineers and the US Fish and Wildlife Service have created an environment in which the water released from the bottom of the dam is never above 71 degrees, creating what is known as the “Brookville Tailwater”. The tailwaters run for about 2 miles before they join the West Fork of the Whitewater River, and are stocked with Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout. On any given day throughout the year you will see fly fishermen and women from throughout the Tri-State testing their skills along those precious two miles.

So whether you enjoy fishing from a boat, from a dock or from the shore, Brookville Lake has some of the best fishing around.BOATING

Brookville Lake has 9 public boat ramps and three marinas. Daily and weekly buoy and dock rentals are available at varying rates and availability. Boats are available for rent at Quakertown and Kent’s Harbor.MARINAS

Kent’s Harbor (privately-owned full service marina with docks and boat rentals)Hanna Creek – 76 slips for sailboats only Quakertown Marina (full service marina with docks, buoys and boat rentals within Quakertown SRA)

Fairfield Marina (docks, buoys, fishing and picnic area. No boat ramp)IS THERE A CHARGE TO USE YOUR BOAT ON BROOKVILLE LAKE?

There are no longer daily or annual boat launch fees for Brookville Lake. These launch fees have been replaced by a DNR Lake Permit, which now costs $22/year for each motorized watercraft lake permit and $5/year for each non-motorized watercraft lake permit. All private watercraft using Brookville Lake must have this permit.

This includes personal watercraft, motorboats, canoes, paddleboats, rowboats and all watercraft moored at marinas, private docks, group docks or bank ties. Permits can be purchased at the DNR office: 14108 SR 101, Brookville, IN 47012.

For additional information, contact the Indiana DNR Brookville Lake/Mounds State Park:765-647-2657/2658 or visit the website at: www.dnr.IN.govCAMPING

Two Indiana SRA campgrounds are on Brookville Lake. Mounds SRA has 312 Class A sites with electric and water in the immediate area. This campground also has 57 AA sites which have water, electric and sewage hook-ups. Five shower houses and three comfort stations are located throughout the campground as well as three trailer dumping stations. A Class A campground is located in the Quakertown SRA at the north end of the lake. This campground contains 98 sites, all with electric and water in the immediate area. For more information about camping, contact the DNR at 866-622-6746 or visit: www.camp.IN.gov. Private campgrounds are also located in the area.BIRD WATCHING AND WILDLIFE

Around the Brookville Lake, birders will find a wide variety of song birds, raptors, waterfowl and waders. For those with patience and a keen eye will most likely see a Bald Eagle. Herons of all varieties are quite prevelant as well as egrets and Canadian geese. Red tail hawks are abundant along with osprey, mallards, widgeons and sandhill cranes. The local Audubon chapter conducts Christmas Bird Counts and volunteers maintain over 300 bluebird boxes. One recent siting inventory included: Common Loon, Pied-billed Grebe, Double-crested Cormorant, Double-crested Cormorant, Great Blue Heron, Canada Geese, Wood Duck, Green-winged

Brookville Lake is a federal project which was created as a reservoir to control flooding in the Whitewater Valley and to control floods into the Ohio River. Construction began in 1965 and the reservoir began operating in 1974 and is managed by the Army Corps of Engineers.

It took years to acquire the necessary 11,000 acres in the area and many local residents had to relocate. One entire town, Fairfield, Indiana, was destroyed with the construction of the dam and reservoir. There is a “New Fairfield” off Fairfield Causeway Road, close to the Fairfield Causeway which crosses Brookville Lake and connects SR1 with SR 101. There is also a Fairfield Marina, just

The Brookville Lake (http://www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/2961.htm) and Whitewater Memorial State Park Recreation Complex (http://www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/2962.htm) is home to great hunting, fishing, boating and swimming. What else could you ask for?

Brookville Lake is home to 780 campsites from primitive to AA hookups, 20 family cabins, and nearly 50 miles of footpaths. Have a horse? Enjoy Whitewater Memorial State Park’s 9-mile bridle trail. Don’t have a horse? Visit the saddle barn for a guided ride! (http://www.guidedtrailridesllc.com)

On January 1, Brookville-Whitewater rings in the new year with a First Day Hike suitable for all ages (just remember to dress for the weather).

Spring events include Earth Day Lakeshore and Trail cleanup with the US Army Corps of Engineers, guided hikes for National Trails Day as well as a day of free fishing. That’s right—no license needed!

The complex ramps up the summer activities starting in May. Summer holiday staples are cornhole tournaments, live music, and campfire programs at the camp stores. The complex’s three beaches are clean and close to home for a day at the lake. Eleven boat ramps offer many options for accessing the lake for sailing, power boating, fishing, tubing, canoeing and kayaking, or water skiing. Brookville Lake is even a sea plane air strip Monday through Friday!

Every weekend from Memorial Day through Labor Day, the Interpretive Naturalists offer programs on local natural or cultural history. Call the Mounds SRA or Whitewater Memorial State Park offices for a current schedule of programs and events.

The special event season winds down with the property’s signature event, Spooktacular Camping Weekend (October 17 & 18), jam-packed with activities from Friday through Saturday evenings. Friday night kicks off the festivities with a chili cookoff. On Saturday campers decorate campsites, play cornhole, make creepy crafts, show off their costumes, and trick-or-treat in the campground. Spooky Hayrides operate from the Mounds SRA camp store on October 11 and 17, and Haunted Hayrides operate from the Whitewater Memorial

Right here in Indiana, one has access to 11 Corps properties: Brookville Lake, Cagles mill Lake, Cannelton Lock and Dam, Cecil M. Harden lake, J. Edward Roush Lake, John T. Myers Lock and Dam, Mississinewa Lake, Monroe Lake, Newburgh Lock and Dam, Patoka Lake and Salamonie Lake. These USACE (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) projects are part of the Louisville District and the Great Lakes & Ohio River Division. Brookville Lake’s very own website for the Corps is: http://www.lrl.usace.army.mil/Missions/CivilWorks/Recreation/Lakes/BrookvilleLake.aspx

For over 200 years, the Corps has served the nation with programs such as waterway navigation, flood water control/protection/reduction, disaster assistance, hydroelectric power generation, water supply, environmental restoration and protection, outdoor recreation and military support. The Natural Resource mission is to manage and conserve those natural resources, consistent with ecosystem management principles, while providing quality public outdoor recreation experiences to serve the needs of present and future generations.

Area History and Features of Brookville LakeBrookville Lake lies in the heart of the Whitewater River Valley. This area has long been acknowledged

as one of the most picturesque and historically significant in the State of Indiana. The earliest settlers of the region encountered several Indian tribes, notably the Miami, the Delaware, and the Illinois. The hills and valleys along the Whitewater River were favorite resorts for hunting. However, the Indians abandoned their claims on much of the region as early as 1795, following the signing of the Treaty of Greenville.

During the next decade, the Whitewater Valley was settled in earnest. Attracted by the pure abundant water and the rich, level river bottoms, ideally suited for farming, a constant stream of settlers found their way up the Whitewater Valley from Kentucky and Ohio. Many of the family names of the early pioneers have been permanently fixed to the landmarks and cities of the area, including the towns of Connersville and Dunlapsville, as well as Templeton and Hanna Creeks.

The town of Brookville was officially born in 1808. During the early expansion days, Brookville became the cultural and political center of Indiana. During the period from 1825 to 1840, every Governor of Indiana called Brookville his home. However, following the transfer of the State Land Office from Brookville to Indianapolis in the 1820’s, the growth and development of the Whitewater Valley slowed.

In 1834, the construction of the Whitewater Canal was initiated. Running a total length of 101 miles, the Canal was the most important means of transportation of the period.

Partnerships & Recreation Facilities The recreation facilities at the lake are operated

and maintained by the State of Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), with the exception of the Dam, Tailwater and Overlook Recreation Areas, which the Corps operates and maintains. Recreation facilities include beaches, boat ramps, campgrounds, fishing piers, an 18-hole golf course, hiking trails, lodging, marinas, picnic areas, playgrounds, restaurant, shooting & archery ranges and a tailwater trout fishing area. Visit the state’s website at: http://www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/2961.htm for more information. Want to volunteer? Many volunteer opportunities exist. Please contact either the Corps or DNR to get started today.

acres, surrounding Brookville Lake there are over 25 miles of hiking trails ranging from “easy” to “rugged”. A 24-mile loop, created by combining trails, is referred to as the Adena Trace Trail, which was created and designed with the assistance of the Hoosier Hiking Council (HHC), using some existing pioneer roads and deer paths as a base in some areas. The HHC and its volunteers continue to maintain the trails.

BLSA

Check out blsa.usfor our 2014 racing and events schedule!

The Brookville Lake Sailing Association is a fun-loving group of sailors from all over the Tri-State area. Sailing is our passion. We sail on the best sailing lake in the area, and our home base is in the best sailboats-only marina facility, Hanna Creek. Our members sail the widest variety of boats imaginable, from small sailing dinghies to large, comfortable cruising sailboats. Above all, we’re not a “snotty yachty” organization...we’re a family-oriented group who love to sail, love sailboats and enjoy the camaraderie of others who feel the same way.

We offer sailing fun for all levels of ability and interest. If you’re a novice, we have experienced veterans who can help you build your skills. If you’re an expert, you’ll find lots of equally skilled company. If you just want to have sailing fun, we can contribute there also.

We enjoy a close relationship with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, and present an organized voice on issues related to sailing and sailing boats on Brookville Lake. We’re also members in good standing of the United States Sailing Association.

Membership in BLSA is a pleasant and fun way to increase enjoyment of your sailboat on the best sailing lake in the Tri-State area. Our members will welcome you and your family into BLSA, and you’ll build friendships that will prosper outside the world of sailing.

We invite you to join us now, for this sailing season and for many more to follow. We would consider it our privilege.

For more information visit www.blsa.us

BLSA HISTORY In 1974, the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) opened Brookville Lake, and a small group of very dedicated people established the Brookville Lake Sailing Association (BLSA) (see Founding Members listing, below). In 1982, the first phase of the Hanna Creek Sailing Marina was opened, with the 5-ton power hoist becoming operational at this facility in 1983.

The USACE continues to manage the lake in its primary function as a flood control reservoir for the Ohio River system, while the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) oversees the surrounding park and marina facilities. BLSA works with both organizations to ensure the continued development of shore and water facilities to be used for sailing. In 2004, BLSA began gathering information to document the water depth in the Hanna Creek cove. The silting problem is becoming critical in this area and this data will assist the government entities in preparing a mitigation plan. Besides working with these agencies, BLSA’s purpose is to promote and encourage the sport of sailboat handling, water safety, seamanship, competitive sailing, and on-and-off water social activities.

BLSA

BLSA members hail from the surrounding area in Indiana, Southwestern Ohio, and Northern Kentucky. Membership in BLSA is open to anyone interested in the fun and fellowship of sailing. BLSA offers a complete schedule of year-round activities for our members. These events begin with the spring “Ice-Breaker” dinner, continue with many social activities, the racing program, and sailing seminars, then conclude with the Winter Awards Banquet.

Races are held on many weekends during the season. Both cruiser/keel-boat and dinghy/day-sailor classes are accommodated in the racing program. In 2004, BLSA expanded the racing program to include two fleets. In 2005, this format was modified to allow the growing fleet of J/24s to race in a one-design format with the other racers competing under the Portsmouth handicap system. The “P” fleet competes throughout the season for the club championship, the “Ed Griffith” Cup, and the J/24s challenge for a trophy honoring the late Jim Duffy. The BLSA racing program continues to evolve. In recent seasons, we have been running a single fleet.

The club made a major step forward in 2006, with the purchase of a covered pontoon boat, powered by an outboard engine. The boat is

the official ‘BLSA Activities Boat’, and is used as a Committee Boat to enhance the racing program. Since the boat’s acquisition, the BLSA racing program, in particular, has experienced major improvements. Used as Committee Boat during races, the Activities Boat has been a huge help in setting course markers, establishing fair starts, monitoring finishing positions and times, and providing an additional safety margin. This has made the BLSA race program far more professional and more fun. As club members become more familiar with the benefits and potential of the Activities Boat, more and more social events will be developed to take advantage, and to add additional fun to BLSA social functions.

Thanks to specific member contributions and annual dues, the club was able to purchase an equipment trailer in 2009. The trailer is used primarily for storage of all social event equipment and supplies. The addition of this trailer to the club’s assets has been a tremendous help in setting up and running our various social functions.

Social events are tied to the racing schedule to include as many members as possible. Most events are free to BLSA members, although some involve bringing a covered dish or paying a small fee. A complete schedule is posted on the Hanna Creek bulletin board and on the Social page of this site.

AROUND THE LAKE

When the fog rises off the Whitewater River, and the cool, crisp autumn air rustles the colorful trees, and you hear the sound of deer walking softly in the cornfields, and smell the pungent aroma of a wood fire, you feel like you are transported back to a quieter, simpler time. There is a part of Union County, Indiana, that time has forgotten. But it is also a place for modern day pioneers to enjoy the beauty and adventure.

Union County was settled in 1805, and was established from parts of the surrounding Indiana counties in 1821. The rolling hills and fertile fields have drawn settlers and residents here through the years.

The original county seat was Brownsville, located on the banks of the Whitewater River. It was later moved to a more central location in the village of Liberty.

Union County has been the home of many people who have marked history in one way or another: Major General Frederick Leroy Martin, commander of the Army Air Force base at Pearl Harbor December 7, 1941; Joaquin Miller, Poet of the Sierras; Mary Alice “Little Orphan Annie” Smith; Bob Jenkins “Voice of the Indy 500”; General Ambrose Burnside, of the US Civil War fame, and many more.

With a population of a little more than 7000, we are a small, mostly agricultural community. We have had and do have some industry. Historically,

we have been home to the Cockefair Woolen Mill, largest textile mill west of the Alleghenies until after the Civil War.

Welcome to...

Today tourists may enjoy camping, fishing and hiking in Whitewater Memorial State Park. We are also at the head waters of the Brookville Lake reservoir with Quakertown Beach, a popular summer spot.

The summer and fall are alive with festivals, farmer’s markets and celebrations centering around our beautiful Indiana limestone courthouse. Christmas in our hometown reminds us of a peaceful, quieter time.
