Then mark your calendar for Columbus Day weekend (Oct. 5-7) and make plans to attend the 2012 SML Charity Home Tour where visitors can get an inside look at eight distinctive lakefront homes and find design, decorating and landscaping inspiration. The fact that all eight Tour homes are accessible by boat is part of what makes SML’s event unique among similar tours across the country. Weather permitting — and Southwest Virginia is usually blessed with some gorgeous fall boating days in early October — traveling to some or all of the homes by water, especially with friends or family aboard, is a special treat. The close proximity of this year’s Tour homes, coupled with lower gas prices, makes going by boat practical, too. Seven Tour stops are clustered along the shores of the lower Roanoke and Blackwater channels, and the eighth is reached via what is generally a traffic- free run up the Blackwater to B47. In addition, Tour planners have taken steps to arrange extra docking space at several of the homes to minimize instances where boaters have to wait for a place to tie up. All-in-all, some delightful fall cruise destinations await, so keep this guide for attending the Home Tour by boat handy. – Jerry Hale

charities?

Seven Tour stops are clustered along the shores of the lower Roanoke and Blackwater channels, and the eighth is reached via what is generally a traffic-free run up the Blackwater to B47.

In addition, Tour planners have taken steps to arrange extra docking space at several of the homes to minimize instances where boaters have to wait for a place to tie up.

All-in-all, some delightful fall cruise destinations await, so keep this guide for attending the Home Tour by boat handy.
