The purpose of romance

• The Romance film can be defined as a genre wherein the plot revolves around the love between two characters. This genre usually has a theme that searches a subject within love such as love at first sight, forbidden love, love triangles, and sacrificial love. The nature of Romance films can contrast greatly. Whether the end is happy or tragic, Romance film aims to induce strong emotions in the audience.

Romance conventions Examples from films“Boy meets girl” typical in a romance movie. The audience of these films mostly like to see happy endings.

“The wedding planner” Mary falls in love with Steve but Steve already had a girlfriend willing to get married. In the end they decide to go in two separate ways and he marries Mary in the end.

Denotations and connotationsThis picture denotes the two men being close to each other However this connotes the love between the two men and them being so close not speaking from a distance like two ordinary people. The background is blurred to show the main focus on the two main characters.

The connotation shown in this shot shows the two men as a loving romantic couple, who care for each other. The denotation shows us that the two men are together and the close up shows that they are caring and loving towards each other.

The denotation in this scene shows two men on a field laying against a truck and dressed up in a western dress code. The connotation shows that these two men seem friendly and have a good friendship if one is slouching on another's truck.

In this shot of the trailer the two men are looking ahead upon the mountains which is a distance. This could imply that they are looking into their future of being together forever or whether it may end.

This medium close up expresses the fact that the two men are deeply in love and that one of them has his arms wrapped around the other. The background shows some sort of forest which indicates that they are alone in an abandoned area.

This image shows us the two men sitting with each other. The fire could represent the romantic spark between the two lovers. The horse having its head facing downwards could represent the loss in hope and that ominous things may occur.

• The context of the trailer is about gays. In society today homophobic people are against homosexuals which could effect society because they are born naturally this way.

• The film is a romantic film which shows that anyone could be in love and that its their life and their choice.
