Licensed Lay Minister (Reader) Pauline Jones writes…
The month of June holds a special place in my heart. It was the
month that my first child was born and it brings memories of juicy
nectarines and fragrant roses.
As I write we are still in lockdown and as my household is shielded,
we expect to remain so until at least the end of June and probably
longer. I do not cease to thank God for those who are working so
hard to enable us to remain safe and also that we, personally, have
such a pleasant place in which to stay – our garden holds that scent
of roses although we don’t grow nectarines yet.
Do not think I am not aware of how lucky I am and I am thinking and praying for those in
small spaces; those who have to go out when they would rather not and also those who
don’t have a safe space to live.
It is hurting many of us that we are unable to go into our churches at the moment and I
know that the wardens and PCC are wondering how we will be able to meet our
financial obligations once we all open up again.
I am thankful for the services that have been set up by many churches, both interactive
through software like Zoom or on YouTube where they can be watched throughout the
week. I am, however aware of those who don’t use technology for whatever reason and
hoping that those who are helping with their physical needs will remember also spiritual
needs by printing off the church news sheets with the readings and prayers for the
week.
One of my favourite quotes from the Bible is from 1 Corinthians 13.8 “Love never fails”,
that gift of love from God. The attitude of many people during the present crisis reflects
that attitude. Even while we are separated from friends and family; even when those we
hear of are not known; we are aware of sacrifices made and links strengthened.
Praying that you keep safe and remembering that “Love never Fails”
Pauline

Heaven in ordinary … something understood… by the Archdeacon of
Worcester
The month of June sees the Church emerging from the long seasons of Lent and Easter into the even longer Trinity season, which stretches through the summer into the autumn. Some churches call this period Ordinary time, which I rather like. Without ordinary, we would not appreciate the extraordinary.
It seems to me that most of us are yearning for a touch of the ordinary right now. We have done our best to make the most of difficult times under lockdown, but are looking forward to ‘normal’ human contact and, as some people put it, getting our lives back. In truth our lives have carried on, albeit within boundaries. And we have had time to reflect. A little while back in the midst of all this, I read something which stuck with me and got me thinking: ‘God does not send us plagues to teach us things, though we can learn from them.’
When bad things happen, people ask why. The God revealed in Jesus does not visit plagues on people, nor wish natural disasters on anyone. Rather, the Gospel shows us a God who chooses to walk with us, meets us in the storms of life, and experiences the highs and lows of what it means to be human alongside us.
So what are we learning? After years of bruising debate about our relationships within Europe, we are learning the art of listening and talking kindly with one another again. Community spirit is flourishing and in the midst of isolation we have become more connected: not only through social media, but also through the humble telephone. We have learned what it is to miss our social contact with one another: love of neighbour has re-emerged in a new and stronger way.
We are learning that we are connected across the whole world. ‘Me first’ does not work when facing a common challenge to our well-being - whoever thought we could all be first anyway? What happens thousands of miles away affects us and we are learning that we are all responsible for each other, challenged to work for the common good because that includes our own good.
George Herbert, the seventeenth-century priest-poet, wrote a poem called Prayer, in which he used the delightful phrase ‘heaven in ordinary’. As we enter these weeks of Ordinary time, we could try to see what we have learned. You might like to look up the poem, for tellingly it ends with these simple words: ‘something understood.’

Thank you In normal times the churches of Blakedown and Churchill would have had their Annual Parish Meeting by the end of April 2020. This meeting gives parishioners the opportunity to hear reports of church activities having taken place in 2019, and to examine the audited accounts. Most importantly it is the occasion when we are able to acknowledge and thank the many volunteers who keep our churches open and working in the villages. Those who daily open and close the churches, clean them, arrange flowers, our choir and Organist, the volunteers who conduct services, and others who attend to the small jobs that need attention. Thank you All, we are very grateful and appreciate all that you do. We have been instructed by the Diocese that we may postpone the APCM until October, so until that happens the current Wardens, Secretary and Treasurer will remain in post! Fundraising events have had to be cancelled, but we are fortunate that in 2019 many people organised varied and different events. Thank you All. Some villagers kindly donate to the churches by monthly standing order, their donations are very helpful while we are n 'lockdown ', where no services ( and collections! ) are taking place. I see a surname appear on a bank statement, but have no other information. You know who you are - thank you. During the current pandemic we continue to face our usual expenses like insurance, utilities bills, churchyard maintenance, and in the case of BLakedown unexpected repairs after the gales in March. Many of the congregation do give to the churches through regular standing order, or the weekly envelope scheme. If you do use the envelopes please save them up until services can resume again, or alternatively post them through my door (69, Belbroughton Road) while out for your daily exercise! I am able to Bank any cash at Blakedown Post Office. There is information in this magazine of the different ways of 'giving' to our churches. At the time of writing our church buildings are closed, but our churches are still very much at the centre of our community. If you need any help or support please do telephone either Mary: 01562 700776 or Jan : 01562 700543. If we can't help ourselves, we may know someone who can. Please ring even if it's just for a chat. Weekly services are available on line via the CBB website if you have the technology! Please keep well and safe from Coronavirus, and please follow Government advice. J.J.

We can help provide some of the additional support required including managing child’s behaviour, anxious children, keeping children occupied, childcare and signposting to other organisations that may help.
There is the option to complete a form to self-refer to the service http://www.startingwellworcs.nhs.uk/support-during-covid19 and also links to other advice, information and support around parenting and issues relating to children at this time.

Blame the chair, not me!
(A timely message from Jenny Edwards MBE of the Disabled Christian Fellowship)
I am a long-term wheelchair user and my electric wheelchair is an amazing tool in many
ways, but as with so many wonderful things it can also go wrong. And that is a wonderful
illustration of how we feel at times - and how God can intervene at the not-so-good times. Do
you sometimes have days when you feel things are just not running smoothly? I often do,
and on those days, I frequently find my chair simply does what it wants to do and not what I
want it to do! For instance, doors and walls get in the way and I crash into them knocking off
the paint and causing even more frustration than before. Admittedly, this is mainly due to my
not concentrating whilst driving, but at the time I see it as a wheelchair fault! Another
situation is when the chair takes on a mind of its own. The joystick on the chair is extremely
sensitive and the slightest knock can send me in a direction I do not want to go, and at a
speed that is frightening! This often happens when someone rests their arm on the chair,
hitting the joystick. Again, I blame the chair, but really, if I had turned it off that would not
happen. Once, I actually had to be rescued from a bush in a ditch because I failed to turn
the chair off whilst to talking to someone! Another chair incident can be caused by failing to
turn the battery charger on at night - no battery charge, chair no go!
You will have no doubt realised that every one of these incidents could have been avoided if
I had been more careful. It is so easy to blame things or people when the day does not go to
plan. I blame my chair, but that does not make me feel any better. However, just stopping
still for a while, and using that time to connect with God, can and does change the day. A
day that does not start with a conversation with God is never a good day for me, but the
wonderful thing is, I can stop and connect with Him.
MASKS
The public is advised to consider wearing face coverings in enclosed public spaces such as
shops, trains and buses to help reduce the spread of coronavirus.
• People who use public transport or visit shops should consider covering their mouth and nose based on advice from SAGE
• Face coverings are not a replacement for social distancing and regular handwashing which remain the most important actions, says Chief Medical Officer
• Public are urged not to buy medical grade masks so they can be saved for frontline health and care workers, and instead make their own face coverings at home The public is advised to consider wearing face coverings in enclosed public spaces where
you may be more likely to come into contact with people you do not normally meet, the
government announced today.

GIVING TO THE CHURCHES
There are a number of ways that donations can be made towards the work of the three churches in our parish. Free will offering envelopes: You can continue to donate to both Churchill and Blakedown churches using your Free Will Offering envelopes - please post them through the letterbox of number 69 Belbroughton Road while you're out for your daily exercise. If you would like to have a set of Free Will Offering envelopes then please call (01562) 700543. By gifting online through give.net which is part of 'Stewardship' - a Christian Charity. give.net is easy to use.... Eg, go into www.give.net and click onto ‘Find a Charity’ Type “Blakedown and Churchill Churches, wait a moment for the church to pop up and then follow the simple instructions. NB it is quite common for this not to work first time, in which case please re-type and all should be revealed! For UK taxpayers, there is gift aid box to tick and Stewardship remits the tax reclaim to the church, thus easing the burden on the Acting Treasurer. The only income that your churches receive is from the generous gifts made by members of the congregations and communities. From these gifts the general running costs of the church buildings have to be met (there are always repairs needed to these beautiful old buildings) and the stipend of your Priest, the Rectory running costs and all church mission and outreach costs.
So, ALL contributions are very, very gratefully received.

JUNE in the garden
On the longest day of the year, the extra light and warmth encourages the garden to
put on an exuberant burst of growth. But this extra light and warmth also means
weeds will sprout up from seemingly nowhere. Keep on top of them by hoeing
regularly in dry conditions.
Top 10 Jobs this month
1 Hoe borders regularly to keep down weeds 2 Be water-wise, especially in drought-affected areas 3 Pinch out sideshoots on tomatoes 4 Harvest lettuce, radish, other salads and early potatoes 5 Position summer hanging baskets and containers outside 6 Mow lawns at least once a week 7 Plant out summer bedding 8 Stake tall or floppy plants 9 Prune many spring-flowering shrubs 10 Shade greenhouses to keep them cool and prevent scorch

A MESSAGE FROM BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF BLAKEDOWN PRIMARY SCHOOL
DEAR FRIENDS OF BLAKEDOWN CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL, Although the sight of happy children going to and from school is missing from our village at the moment, I know many families are finding the time to do good walks, lots of baking, craft and take part in activities which are available on the school website and on many other platforms that families can access. I hope everyone is practising safe use of the internet, as if you have not got enough to think about. Thank you to the villagers who have put up rainbows and teddies for the children to spot during exercise walks round the village. Blakedown School added their own bear to the trail.
While most students are not attending school, it has still been open for the children of key workers. Staff are on a rota, some are working supporting the children in school, others working from home supporting children who are doing their school activities at home. The school continues its work at the heart of the community. School volunteers are not forgotten, and we will be very pleased to welcome you back to school as soon as possible. Governor meetings are taking place via online platforms. Governors quickly embraced the technology, getting a little of the experience the children are having – seeing, hearing and participating; but missing the social contact and interaction which makes the role so rewarding. This period of school closure will place a big strain on families, and school is ready to help. If you are aware of families facing strain, please contact the school directly. Everything will be dealt with in confidence, the wellbeing of children being the priority.

I am sorry I cannot offer any assurances that this situation will end soon, or indeed not reoccur. Over the last months leaders, staff and governors used school policies and developed new contingency plans as the Department for Education advised, carefully using their experience to mitigate the effects of the situation on children. Strategies are being put in place that will use the determination, resilience and success of Blakedown School to recover and secure the education and protection of children in the future. We ask you to help us make a successful future for the children and the school. We can only hope that this experience strengthens and improves the whole school community and our vision for education. Appreciating our values, using them to build a school that is protected by its strengths. Mrs Beckford-Bond and her staff are working tirelessly, and governors wish to pay tribute to the commitment everyone has shown. Governors wish you good health and look forward to seeing you back in the normal routine soon. Freda Griffith Chair of Governors Blakedown Church of England Primary School

This information is based on a report by Steven Bragginton of Kidderminster Civic Society,
kindly prepared for Churchill and Blakedown Historical Society in support of the successful
campaign for the conservation of Blakedown Signal Box. Edited by Jim Long of the
Historical Society.

typical village GWR station, Churchill

least 10 years before Hagley. Note
the crossing gates, the signal box of

mechanical signals, the quite
delightful Hagley direction waiting

Also note the locomotive waiting in
the former sidings in the distance
opposite the signal box, and the

During our March 2020 meetings, it became apparent that our Monday Meetings could no longer continue during the Covid 19 lockdown, and we agreed to suspend our weekly meetings whilst continuing to contribute to the needs and aspirations of the local community during these troubled times.
Rotarian Janet Wicks found her vocation when she involved herself in the “worcestershirefortheloveofscrubs” a national project with each County organizing itself.
The Worcester Hub was set up and our member Janet was involved getting Kidderminster involved. The need for Personal Protective Equipment was in short supply and the NHS were struggling to find supplies. The group in Kidderminster was formed when a number of sewing folk and small businesses decided to get together and help to fill the need.
Funding was an immediate problem and Janet asked if Hagley Rotary Club would buy a roll of material (cost around £70) , the Club agreed but went further and with assistance of members and friends the club has donated currently £1075.and our district has contributed another £250.00 towards the cause.
The group has grown and as of the 27th April the group has made 398 scrubs, 8108 laundry bags, 4087 headbands and 904 scrub hats,
The Rotary Club of Hagley continues to support good causes through its members, group and district with simulated screen conference and social media.
We look forward to returning to the the Lyttleton Arms shortly so if readers would like to have fun with a purpose, consider joining our club who will be meeting at 7.00 pm for 7.30 pm on Monday evenings by visiting our website at

POETRY
Fear (We received this very timely and challenging
poem from Tear Fund.
It was written by Gideon Heugh)
These are the days we hoped we’d never
see.
Panic. Confusion. Fear and uncertainty.
These are the days when faith is put
to the test:
our souls shrinking back amid growing
distress,
while I guess that hope is on lock-down
these days –
this pandemic of anxiety seeming less
like a phase
and more like the status quo.
When there’s no where left to turn,
where are we meant to go?
These are the days to remember who
we’re made to be:
loved, accepted, worthy, free -
days to see that a saviour is shining in
the dark
declaring that love is alive and it’s
designed for our hearts;
these are the days for stones to be rolled
back
for joy to rise up and peace go on the
attack
because the fact is that you can’t put
grace into isolation,
you can’t stop the spring, there will
always be a resurrection.
These days will show that darkness is
just a place where light begins,
and that no matter how strong the
fear, love always wins.
Ten little Christians
(I know this is an old piece, but its message never changes)
Ten little Christians went to church when fine, but it started raining and then there were nine. Nine little Christians stayed up very late, one overslept, and then there were eight. Eight little Christians on the road to Heaven, one joined a rambling club, and then there were seven. Seven little Christians heard of Sunday ‘flicks’, one thought they’d like to go and then there were six. Six little Christians kept the place alive, till one bought a television then there were five. Five little Christians seemed loyal to the core, the minister upset one, and then there were four. Four little Christians argued heatedly over forms of worship and then there were three. Three little Christians sang the service through, got a hymn they didn’t know and then there were two. Two little Christians disputed who should run the next coffee morning and then there was one. One faithful Christian knowing what to do went and visited a friend and then there were two. Two sincere Christians went out to seek two more, so their numbers doubled and then there were four. Four devoted Christians simply couldn’t wait, till they found four others and then there were eight. Eight eager Christians searching round for souls, praying, working, caring, drew others in by shoals, Shoals and shoals at every service cramming every pew, Lord, supply this grace and zeal right here in our Church too.

FIND THE 30 HIDDEN BIBLE BOOK NAMES IN THIS PARAGRAPH
There are 30 books of the Bible in this paragraph. Can you find them?
This is a most remarkable puzzle. It was found by a gentleman in an airplane seat
pocket, on a flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu, keeping him occupied for hours. He
enjoyed it so much, he passed it on to some friends. One friend from Illinois worked on
this while fishing from his john boat. Another friend studied it while playing his banjo.
Elaine Taylor, a columnist friend, was so intrigued by it she mentioned it in her weekly
newspaper column. Another friends judges the job of solving this puzzle so involving,
she brews a cup of tea to help her nerves. There will be some names that are really
easy to spot. That’s a fact. Some people, however, will soon find themselves in a jam,
especially since the book names are not necessarily capitalized. Truthfully, from
answers we get, we are forced to admit it usually takes a minister or scholar to see
some of them at the worst. Research has shown that something in our genes is
responsible for the difficulty we have in seeing the books in this paragraph. Dueing a
recent fund raising event, which featured this puzzle, the Alpha Delta Phi lemonade
booth set a new record. The local paper, The Chronicle, surveyed over 200 patrons
who reported that this puzzle was one of the most difficult they had ever seen. As
Daniel Humana humbly puts it, “The
books are all right there in plain view
hidden from sight”. Those able to
find all of them will hear great
lamentations from those who have to
be show. One revelation that may
help is that books like Timothy and
Samuel may occur without their
numbers. Also, keep in mind, that
punctuation and spaces in the middle
are normal. A chipper attitude will
help you compete really well against
those who claim to know the
answers. Remember, there is no
need for a mad exodus: there really
are 30 books of the Bible lurking
somewhere in this paragraph waiting
to be found.
God Bless.

A man running a little behind schedule arrived at a church film evening and, in the semi
darkness, he managed to find a seat. As his eyes adjusted to the darkness, he was surprised
to see a dog sitting beside its master in the row ahead, intently watching the film. It even
seemed to be enjoying the film, wagging its tail in the happy bits, drooping its ears at the sad
bits, and hiding its eyes with its paws at the scary bits. At the end the man approached the
dog's owner, "Wow, I’m amazed at how your dog really seemed to enjoy the film" The owner
replied, “Yes, I can't believe it myself, because he hated the book."
A new boy turned up at a Sunday Club
and the leader asked him a few questions
to break the ice and ended with asking
him what his father did. He's a magician,
sir," said the boy. "How interesting,” said
the leader, “What's his favourite
trick - what is he is he really very good at
doing?" The boy replied, "He’s very good
at sawing people in half." The leader was
impressed. “Now tell me something more
about yourself, do you have any brothers
and sisters?” asked the teacher. “Yes sir,”
replied Johnny, I have one brother and
two half sisters.”
