Broad Run Makes a Statement with Opening Win, 25-6!

They say that revenge is a dish best served cold. Well, twelve months is plenty of time for just about any dish to cool off, but the memories of last year's opening game loss to the Potomac Falls Panthers still burned hot in the minds of this year's Broad Run Spartans. Fueled by pre-season prognosticators who had pegged them as low as sixth this year in the new eight-team Potomac District, the Spartans imposed their will on the Panthers in a convincing 25-6 victory, and in the process exacted a little revenge on the only team that handed them a district loss last year. The Spartans struck first on this night, as the Spartan's new starting running back, Tim Baldwin capped off a 10-play, 80-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge. Potomac Falls put together an impressive drive of their own in response but senior Frank McGhee III thwarted that opportunity when he

intercepted Potomac Falls quarterback Hunter Lawall in the end zone. The hard-hitting affair between the two teams was dominated by defense for the rest of the 1st quarter and most of the 2nd. The Panthers had one last opportunity before the half to punch in a score after converting four third downs to keep their drive alive, the last conversion coming on a diving 29-yard catch by Ian Gregory. Unfortunately for Potomac Falls, they were out of time outs and the clock ran out after Lawall had scrambled down to the Spartan's 2-yard line.

Bolstered by their goal-line stand, the Spartans came out flying to begin the 3rd quarter. Baldwin, running over or around several Panther defenders, scored from 38 yards out for his second touchdown of the night. He would go on to add his third rushing touchdown just 7 minutes later, and the Spartans went up by the score of 18-0 with just 2 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter. The Panthers were finally able to break through early in the 4th quarter, cutting the lead to 18-6 on Jordan Day's 7-yard touchdown run. If the Panthers had any designs on a comeback,

Page 5: BROAD RUN FOOTBALL 2017 SEASON IN REVIEW

those dreams were quickly snuffed out by Baldwin and his offensive line mates, as the sophomore got loose once again and took it to the house from 50-yards away. Broad Run Head Coach Matt Griffis was clearly pleased with effort given by his young squad. "I was proud of our kids, " Griffis said. "Some people didn't think too highly of us as a team coming into the season, but our kids aren't listening to the naysayers. “The O-line did a great job creating holes for us and Tim makes great cuts when he finds an opening. I thought he had great vision today and ran

the ball hard." Hard indeed. In addition to his four touchdowns, Baldwin tallied 138 yards on only 14 carries. Forced to contend with the potent ground game of the Spartans, sophomore quarterback Mitch Griffis found himself with plenty of time when he was called on to throw, completing 8 of his 11 passes, including 5 to senior receiver Detwaun Turner. Baldwin summed it up nicely in speaking for his teammates after the victory. "This start shows the rest of the district that we're not going to be pushed around. We're ready for anything." The Spartans look to run their record to 2-0 next week in their home opener when they host Potomac District foe, the Tuscarora Huskies.

Huge 4th Quarter Propels Broad Run Over Tuscarora, 28-12

With less than 10 minutes left on the clock in the 4th quarter, little had changed on the scoreboard since the opening moments of the game. A surprising defensive struggle was taking place at Broad Run where the host Spartans were engaged in a battle with Potomac District foe Tuscarora. The Huskies' 15-yard touchdown pass four minutes into the second quarter - an improvised connection between a scrambling Justin Allen and receiver Taye Davis - had been the only score up to this point. At the moment Tuscarora tallied again, with a little less than 10 minutes left in regulation - when a consecutive pair of Adam Thorne receptions went for 63 yards to set up Allen's short sneak across the goal - it looked like a different story was about to be written. With a sudden flick of the wrist, however, the Spartans totally flipped the script. "Nobody was pointing fingers," said Broad Run head coach Matt Griffis. "Everybody was calm, we were fine. And then when we got the opportunity to get the ball back down 12-0, we made some great plays." As rain began to fall, Spartan kick returner Detwaun Turner took the kickoff and raced across midfield to set up the Spartans at the Tuscarora 36-yard line. Broad Run quarterback Mitch Griffis wasted no time. The sophomore evaded Tuscarora's rush, stepped up, found a man and let loose. Junior Luke Lindenfeldar hauled in the pass and, just like that, the Spartans had cut the lead to 5. "They were kind of daring us to throw, so we put in some exotic formations," Matt Griffis explained. "They could either defend the exotic formation or defend the run. Our quarterback made good decisions, our kids blocked well. Our receivers blocked really well tonight." Moments later, the Huskies fumbled away the Spartan kickoff, handing it back to Broad Run at the 10. On the first play, sophomore running back Tim Baldwin strolled into the end zone behind a huge hole created by his offensive line. The Spartans had turned a 12-point deficit into a two-point lead in the span of 13 seconds. They weren't done. After forcing the Huskies to punt, Griffis once again gave the ball to his running back. On 3rd and 1 from the 11, Baldwin gained first-down yardage but refused to go down, steamrolling all the way to the end zone. A minute and a half later, with a minute to go, Baldwin completed the scoring onslaught with a short score, capping the Spartans' comeback. "I've got to give it to my o-line. You saw those holes open up," said Baldwin, author of seven rushing touchdowns after two games. "I just took it to the house with the holes they gave me." The head coach gave much of the credit to his defense. By getting consistent penetration into the offensive backfield, the Spartans kept the Huskies to 12 points after Tuscarora had racked up 35 in its Week 1 matchup. "Our defense never quit. We told them to just survive to the next down, to keep forcing them to make plays," Griffis said.

Page 7: BROAD RUN FOOTBALL 2017 SEASON IN REVIEW

Senior defensive end Stephen Harrison was all over the field, with two sacks and two tackles for loss. "We just never gave up, even when we were down," he said. "This gives us a lot of confidence, that we know that as a team we have what it takes to be conference champs again this year." Tuscarora did itself no favors with a pair of fourth-quarter giveaways recovered by Broad Run's Xavier Johnson and Zangar Smith. With the season just two weeks old, the Spartans already own two Potomac District victories. "We're now 2-0 in the [district]," Griffis said. "No one else can say that." The Spartans daunting early season schedule continues next Friday, when they travel to Purcellville to take on the Woodgrove Wolverines.

Spartans Use Big Plays to Roll Over Woodgrove, 28-12

The Broad Run Spartans remained undefeated Friday night by posting their third consecutive impressive victory, this time taking down the previously unbeaten Woodgrove Wolverines on their home turf by the score of 28-12. Woodgrove had come into the game outscoring their first two opponents by a combined score of 112 to 26, including a 42-14 thrashing of 5A powerhouse Massaponax last week, but it was the Spartan's defense that was able to shut down the high-flying Wolverines on this night as the Spartans coasted to victory. Woodgrove (2-1) put together their best drive of the night on their opening possession. Taking over on their own 25, the Wolverines were able to keep their initial drive going with two fourth-down conversions and found themselves at the Broad Run 27 when freshman quarterback Burton Bailey found junior wide receiver Ben Castellano behind the Spartan last line of defense. Castellano sprinted into the end zone to give Woodgrove the lead. The conversion was no good so with 9:08 left in the first quarter, the Wolverines led 6-0. Broad Run (3-0) was on the move with their first possession, but Woodgrove pounced on a Tim Baldwin fumble and the Wolverines were back in business in Spartan territory. Finding yards on the ground hard to come by, Bailey tried once again to connect through the air but Spartan junior Luke Lindenfeldar had other ideas. "I just saw him throw it and I picked it and ran as fast as I could." said Lindenfeldar. The 68 yard interception and return gave the Spartans a 7-6 lead after senior Attila Buri was good on his extra-point attempt. The Spartans were able to shut down the Wolverines for the rest of the half. Coming into the game, the Spartan coaches had to be concerned with the size difference between their defensive line and the larger Woodgrove offensive line, but led by senior standout Stephen Harrison (8 tackles for a loss on the young season), the smaller and quicker Spartans were more than up to the task. Following yet another stop by the defense, the Broad Run coaches continued to show faith in their talented sophomore running back and were rewarded when Baldwin rumbled in from four yards out, giving the Spartans a 13-6 lead at the half.

Page 9: BROAD RUN FOOTBALL 2017 SEASON IN REVIEW

With Broad Run having established their running game behind Baldwin (28 carries for 156 yards), the Wolverines had no choice but to stack the box and try to contain the Spartans to start the second half. This would open up the air-attack as senior receiver Detwaun Turner hauled in a pass from quarterback Mitch Griffis and sprinted 51 yards to give the Spartans a two touchdown lead. Turner would find the end zone once again late in the third quarter, on the end of an 8-yard touchdown reception from Griffis (7 for 15 for 145 yards) and Broad Run found themselves comfortably ahead by the score of 28-6. Wolverine running back Josh Johnson put Woodgrove on the scoreboard again on a nicely designed end-around from 23 yards out in the fourth quarter but it was too little too late. Johnson ran for over 100 yards and one touchdown for the Wolverines but was held in check for most of the game. Yards were hard to come by with Broad Run forcing five punts to go along with two interceptions and an onside kick recovery. Broad Run head coach Matt Griffis was pleased with his team’s performance. “I was really proud of the defense. I thought our special teams did a good job. Offensively we made some plays. We’ve got a nice one-two punch. Our receivers block well and our quarterback does a nice job of putting the ball where it needs to be.”

There will be no rest for the weary next Friday, as for the fourth time in four games the Spartans will face an undefeated opponent. Former Broad Run assistant Jason Dawson will lead his John Champe Knights into Broad Run to face the Spartans for the first time in school history. Champe was moved from 4A to 5A this year and will be competing in the ultra-competitive Potomac District along with the Broad Run, Stone Bridge, Tuscarora, Potomac Falls, Briar Woods, Freedom, and Rock Ridge.

Broad Run Holds Off John Champe in Thriller, 39-34

When John Champe coach Jason Dawson led his team on to the field at Broad Run High School before their anticipated matchup, he must have felt a wave of pride and excitement. After all, this marked Dawson's return to the school where he was the defensive coordinator for the Spartan's back to back state championship teams in 2008 and 2009. Now, he was returning as head coach of the 3-0 Knights, preparing for their first ever Potomac District clash after moving up from 4A a year ago. It was the Spartans, however, who would ruin the homecoming by scratching and clawing their way to their fourth consecutive victory, winning by the score of 39 - 34.

Early on, with the Champe defense keying on Spartan sophomore running back Tim Baldwin, it was quarterback Mitch Griffis who found running room. Starting at his own 43 after a nice kickoff return by senior Donovan Hale, Griffis scrambled for 21 yards on a 3rd and 8, and then gained 14 more on the next play, bringing it down to the Champe 2. Baldwin took it from there and the Spartans found themselves up 7-0 with 8:57 left in the 1st. Senior Spartan captain Royce Bryson then picked off a pass by quarterback Cameron Parson to end Champe's first

drive, and Griffis once again converted on 3rd and long, this time finding a lane and picking up 19 yards. Griffis was able to punch it in and following the successful conversion from Attila Buri, the Spartans led 14-0. The Broad Run defense was able to control shifty senior Carl Garmon III early on, forcing Champe into another 3rd down. Junior Luke Lindenfeldar then picked off his third pass on the young season and Broad Run once again had the ball. Griffis ran for yet another first down before Champe put the clamps on him, taking him down for a loss on 3rd and short and forcing the Spartans to punt for the first time. Garmon was able to find some room on the next Champe drive, gaining 36 yards on consecutive carries, but after taking the ball down to the Spartan 13, senior defensive tackle Alijah Bragg exploded into the backfield, taking Garmon down for a loss. The teams flipped sides for the start of the second quarter, but two incompletions by Champe gave Broad Run the ball deep in their own territory. With Baldwin continuing to have trouble finding room, Griffis was able to convert on yet another third and long. This time the conversion came via the pass as he connected with Lindenfeldar, who went up high in the air to pull down the catch. On the very next play, Griffis broke through the Champe line, and outran the secondary to score from 67 yards out.

Page 11: BROAD RUN FOOTBALL 2017 SEASON IN REVIEW

Trailing 20-0 only 13 minutes into the game, the Knights dug deep on their next possession. Parson found Tyler Savage open for a 21 yard gain, setting up a Garmon touchdown run from 25 yards out, only to have the score called back for an illegal shift. Undaunted, the Knights converted on a designed keeper on 4th and 3 from the Spartan 17. Garmon found the end zone on the next play to cut the lead to 20 -6.

Coach Matt Griffis, by now sensing that the Knights would be keying on his quarterback, called a quick hitter up the middle to Baldwin, who found a huge hole created by his offensive line to take it to the house from 57 yards away. Following a Champe punt, the Spartans found themselves pinned back at their own 14. Griffis took a shot on 1st down, but overthrew Baldwin, who had gotten behind the Knight's secondary. On 2nd down, the sophomore tried to evade pressure from the Knights and was called for an intentional grounding call. The officiating crew inexplicably called for 4th down for the Spartans, who were then forced to punt from their own end zone. This would prove costly, as Champe quickly took advantage of the zebra's miscue. Parson dropped back and found senior tight end Tyler Cosecke wide open down the middle. Cosecke was able to haul it in and with a two-point conversion, the Knights had cut the Spartan lead to 26-14 as time ran out in the first half. Behind the vocal visiting crowd, the Knights came out flying to start the 3rd quarter. Garmon accounted for 52 yards on two rushing attempts and a completion from Parson, and the Spartan lead had been cut to six, 26-20, only 90 seconds into the half. With momentum clearly having shifted to the Knights, the Spartans desperately needed to make something happen on their next possession. Needing 4 yards on 3rd down from their own 41, Griffis found Donovan Hale on a short pass. Hale fell just over the 45 yard line for a crucial first down. The importance of converting became more apparent on the next play, when Baldwin again found room up the middle, and didn't stop until he reached the end zone from 55 yards away. The Spartan lead was back up to 13, 33-20. If the Spartans thought that their new district foes were about to quit, they were mistaken, as the resilient Knights kept up the pressure on their next drive. Following an amazing one-handed catch by Cosecke that went for 40, Parson went back to his sure-handed senior, who hauled in his second touchdown of the night, this one from 25 yards out. The extra point cut the lead to six once again, 33-27. Following a wild kickoff return for a touchdown by Hale that was called back for a block in the back, things became even more surreal. It appeared as though the Knights had stopped the Spartans' drive when Baldwin was held short on 3rd and 1 from the Broad Run 29. However, following the punt, the side judge blew his whistle and would not let any of the Champe defenders leave the field of play. After ushering them towards the middle of the turf and counting the herd, it was determined the Champe had 12 men on the field at the time of the Spartan punt.. That unsportsmanlike penalty was followed by another. Baldwin then got loose yet again, but his apparent touchdown was called back on a holding call. The third quarter ended after another bizarre sequence following a block in the

Page 12: BROAD RUN FOOTBALL 2017 SEASON IN REVIEW

back call against the Spartans. The Champe defender picked up the flag and tossed it back to the referee, only to find that he was then called for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The 4th quarter began with the Spartans on the Champe 13. Baldwin got the ball down to the 2 before Griffis took it in the rest of the way. Champe was now down by two scores, 39-27, with almost 11 minutes left. Garmon then converted on a huge 4th and 2 from his own 41 for the Knights. Next, a Broad Run personal foul on what appeared to be a textbook tackle by Bryson gave the Knights the ball at the Spartan 27. Parson (12 for 22 for 122 yards, 3 TD's and 2 INT's) found Savage open on a pass downfield and the lead was down to 5 with 8 minutes still left to play, 39-34.

On the ensuing possession, Champe forced the Spartans to punt and found themselves on their own 21 with 6:19 left and needing a touchdown to take the lead. Parson was under heavy pressure on 3rd and 10 and his pass attempt fell harmlessly to the ground. With almost 5 minutes left, Dawson decided to punt, hoping that his defense could come up a stop. With Baldwin ( 25 carries for 184 yards and 3 TD's) unable to continue due to cramping, Griffis carried the ball for three straight plays, gaining 9 yards. With two minutes left, Coach Griffis chose not to try a field goal attempt on 4th and 1. With everyone in the stadium knowing what was coming next, Griffis took the snap and leaped over the 20 yard line, just enough to make the first down. From there, the Spartans were able to line up in their victory formation and come away with the hard-fought victory, 39-34. "That was a fun game to play in," Griffis (18 carries 157 yards , 3 TD's) said afterwards. While his coaches might not have described the game in quite the same way, the bottom line is that the young Spartans have run through a very difficult four game stretch to start the season, and remain undefeated as they travel to Rock Ridge next week for the Phoenix Homecoming.

Spartans Spoil Phoenix Homecoming, 56-34.

Coming into Friday night's contest against the Broad Run Spartans, the Rock Ridge Phoenix had a lot to look forward to. Just the week before, the third-year school had come out on top in a thrilling battle over the Loudoun County Raiders, pulling out a 47-44

victory in overtime. Now, as they prepared for their first Potomac District contest since moving up to 5A this year, the Phoenix found themselves energized by their vocal fans as they tried to upset the undefeated Spartans. The Spartans would have none of

it, as they scored early and often to put the damper on the Homecoming festivities at Rock Ridge High School. Sophomore Tim Baldwin opened the scoring for the Spartans, as he ran untouched on the third play from scrimmage, following offensive lineman John Birchmeier and Matthew Fiume into the end zone. However, in a pattern that would play itself out too often for the Broad Run coaching staff on this night, the Phoenix quickly answered back, as junior quarterback Tristan Berry found DJ Davis open behind the Spartan defense. The 25 yard touchdown pass tied the score at 7-7.

Fortunately, the Spartan offense was clicking on all cylinders, as Spartan QB Mitch Griffis next found senior Donovan Hale for a 16 yard touchdown pass. Then, following a defensive stop, Baldwin took it in for his 13th touchdown of the season from 6 yards away. Another strong series by the Spartan's defense put the ball back in Griffis' hands, and the sophomore found a seem and sprinted 39 yards to the end zone. Attila Buri, who would finish perfect on the night, knocked in extra point to make the score 28-7 midway through the 2nd quarter.

Rock Ridge juniors Berry and Payton Hunter then hooked up on a pretty 50 yard bomb that cut the Spartan lead to 14. With only seconds left in the quarter, Griffis then found freshman Jake Busser on a beautiful backside shoulder pass. Busser was somehow able to keep his feet in bounds and the Spartans went into the half with a 35-14 lead. The Spartans kept the pedal down as the third quarter began. Faced with a 4th and 9 from the Phoenix 37, Griffis found senior captain Royce Bryson in traffic. Bryson made a nifty cut and followed his blockers all the way. On the subsequent Rock Ridge possession, senior Frank McGhee picked off a Berry pass and weaved his way for a 67 yard interception return for touchdown. At this point, the lead was up to 35 and the Spartans appeared to have the game in hand.

Page 14: BROAD RUN FOOTBALL 2017 SEASON IN REVIEW

If nothing else, the Phoenix next showed some determination and grit. Berry's touchdown run from 6 yards out, coupled with a 63 yard touchdown pass to the speedy Hunter following a Spartan punt, cut the lead to 49-28. Jukin' junior Josh Anderson-Jessup completed the Spartan scoring on the night, as he raced 40 yards for the score in the 4th quarter. The final score came on the game's last play, as Berry found Ben Wright from 50 yards out. The two teams combined for 90 points, the most ever

scored in a game under Coach Matt Griffis, who also ran his career record to 64 - 25 since taking over in 2010. The Spartans head into their bye week with a very satisfying record of 5-0. The defense will need to regroup after giving up 34 points in each of the last two games, as they travel to Norfolk to face a surging Booker T. Washington team. The Bookers come into the game with a record of 4-2 and have already scored more points this year than they did all of last year. The Spartan offense, led by Baldwin (821 yards and 13 rushing touchdowns) and Griffis (61 % completion rate with 653 yards and 6 touchdown passes with only 1 interception), look to add to their gaudy five game totals of 176 points scored (35.2 points per game).

Broad Run Travels Long Way for 54-19 Victory over Bookers

For the second time in as many games, the Broad Run Spartans found themselves scheduled for their opponent's Homecoming. And for the second game in a row, the Spartans were able to play spoiler. This time they travelled to Norfolk to face the Bookers from Booker T. Washington, and despite the long bus ride, were able to come away with an impressive 54-19 victory. The undefeated Spartans got out of the gate quickly, as sophomore linebacker Kesean Dyson picked off a Booker pass on the third play of the game and returned it for an apparent touchdown. The touchdown was called back because of a Broad Run penalty, but the interception was not. Sophomore Tim Baldwin quickly scored from 30 yards out on the Spartan's first play from scrimmage, and the Spartans were off and running. After forcing the Bookers to punt, Broad Run quarterback Mitch Griffis found senior receiver Detwaun Turner open for a 36 yard completion. Just two plays later, he found Turner again, and the result was a 13 yard touchdown pass. Attila Buri knocked through the extra point and the Broad Run lead was up to 14.

With the Spartan defense clicking on all cylinders and forcing another 3 and out, Griffis went back to work and found Dominic Brazina open for a 51 yard gain. Baldwin took it in from 3 yards out on the very next play as the Spartans began to pull away, 21-0. Senior Willie Jordan put an end to the next Booker drive when he recovered a fumble. Another Griffis to Brazina completion, this one good for 20, put the ball on the Washington 20. Baldwin wasted little time in scoring his third touchdown of the 1st quarter, as Broad Run pushed their lead to 28-0.

The Bookers are a young, strong, athletic team, as evidenced by their 4-2 record coming into the contest. Booker freshman running back Rodney Hammond scored the first of his three touchdowns on the next Booker possession, cutting the lead to 28-6. As they have done repeatedly this year, the

Page 16: BROAD RUN FOOTBALL 2017 SEASON IN REVIEW

Spartans answered back. Griffis first found junior tight end Everett Drake for 48 yards before tossing an 8 yard score to Donovon Hale. Griffis would come right back to Hale after yet another 3 and out forced by the Spartans, this time the pitch and catch covering 52 yards. Defensive tackle Stephen Harrison, in the midst of a dominating senior season, recovered a Booker fumble and Coach Matt Griffis saw fit to empty the Spartan bench. Junior Josh Anderson-Jessup found similar running room behind his

offensive line as he scored two quick touchdowns to give the Spartans a gaudy 54- 6 lead at halftime. Booker T.'s Hammond, who the Spartans will have to contend with next year when the two teams meet in Ashburn, found a seam and went 72 yards against the Spartan 2's and 3's to open the 3rd quarter. He would close out the scoring later on in the 4th, this time from 11 yards away. Broad Run senior Michael Middleton then picked off a Booker pass to close the books on this one, as the Spartans prepared to depart for the long but satisfying bus trip home. With the decisive victory, for the second time in three years, the Spartans ran their record to 6-0. Three home games remain against Parkdale (Maryland), Freedom (South Riding), and Briar Woods (Downtown Brambleton) before the Spartans travel across town to face the Stone Bridge Bulldogs for the District Championship and Region's # 1 seed in the regular season finale. Not bad for a team picked to finish 6th by some local experts, huh?

Spartans Pound Parkdale Panthers, 44-6

With every new two-year cycle, the Virginia High School Athletic League implements a series of changes. Some of these changes are beneficial and make a world of sense, while others leave coaches and athletic directors scratching their heads and scrambling to fill out their schedules. This year, Loudoun County schools in 4A are being grouped in the Dulles District, while 5A schools from our area will compete in the Potomac District. John Champe, Freedom-South Riding and Rock Ridge have moved from the Dulles District to the Potomac District after getting bumped up to 5A. This brings the number of teams in Broad Run's Potomac District up to eight, and thus each team will have seven district contests each year. This leaves each Dulles District program to find three

opponents to fill out their ten-game schedule. Should be easy, right? Think again. Previous non-conference opponents were very hesitant to commit to playing the Spartans. The only Loudoun County 4A school willing to schedule Broad Run turned out to be Woodgrove, but that left two open dates. Fortunately, Coach Griffis had maintained a cordial relationship with the folks from Booker T. Washington in Norfolk so that left a single opponent still to be found.

Page 18: BROAD RUN FOOTBALL 2017 SEASON IN REVIEW

Unable to find that last opponent in all of Virginia, the Spartans turned to their neighbors in the North, and were finally able to schedule with the Parkdale Panthers from Riverdale, Maryland. Parkdale competes in the largest classification in Maryland, so a victory over the Panthers would prove helpful in accruing power points. Quarterback Mitch Griffis thought it would be a good idea if he and his teammates got off to a quick start against their guests, and he did his part by finding Donovan Hale open for a 48-yard touchdown on the Spartan's very first drive. After a smothering start by the defense gave the ball back to the offense, sophomore Tim Baldwin punched in the first of what would be his three rushing touchdowns on the night. The next Broad Run possession saw Griffis (4 for 4 for 121 yards) find his tight end, Everett Drake, open for a 49-yard touchdown as the Spartans were clicking on all cylinders. Led by Stephen Harrison and Alijah Bragg up front, the Spartan defense continued their assault on the Panthers. A safety made the score 23-0. Baldwin (17 carries for 115 yards) added two more scores before ending his night early. The lightning fast start by the Spartans allowed some of the younger players an opportunity to shine. Bennett Millar came in for Griffis and Connor Hale took over for Baldwin. The two combined to rush for 53 yards on just 7 carries running behind an all-underclassman line, with Hale finishing up the Spartan scoring by reaching the end zone from 20 yards out.

A late Panther score prevented the Spartans from completing the shutout, but all in all it was a solid performance all the way around. With yet another convincing win, the Spartans ran their record to 6-0 for the second time in three years. The Spartans return to Potomac District play next week when they host the Freedom Eagles of South Riding.

Spartans Run Record to 8-0 with 49-19 Defeat of Freedom on Homecoming

Jason Belser, Freedom High School's first-year head coach, knew that his team would face plenty of competition this fall when they were moved from 4A to 5A and back into the Potomac District. After all, Belser was walking the sidelines last year as an assistant for Stone Bridge and thus had a front row seat to the Spartans' stunning 10-7 victory. Knowing that the Spartans had reeled off seven straight victories to start this season, Belser and his coaching staff knew coming in that they would not be able to slug it out with Broad Run, so instead they decided to pull out all the stops and see if they could pull off a couple of surprises right out of the gate.

Throwing caution to the wind, the Eagles not only went for it on their opening possession on 4th and 6 from midfield, but also attempted to execute a double reverse on the same drive. Each play looked to catch the Spartans off guard as the Eagles converted both, and found themselves with a 1st and goal from the Spartans' 6-yard line. Unfortunately for the Eagles, they were forced backwards on the next three plays and had to settle for a 29-yard field goal by junior Brody Campbell. With five minutes gone by, the Eagles found themselves up by the score of 3-0. Any talk of an upset alert was immediately quashed, however, as junior Luke Lindenfeldar took the ensuing kickoff and raced 83 yards for a touchdown and gave the Spartans a lead that they would not relinquish. Senior Willie Jordan would make the Eagles pay on their next possession, as he hunted down the punter following a low snap, and gave the Spartans the ball on the Freedom 25-yard line. Tim Baldwin would run it in from 3 yards out to put Broad Run up by the score of 14-3. Coach Belser again rolled the dice on his team's next possession, attempting a fake punt on 4th and 16. A pass interference call gave the Eagles 15 yards, but they could not convert on 4th and 1 as the Spartans' front seven blew up the play before it had a chance to develop. A few minutes later, Spartan Coach Matt Griffis was faced with a 4th down of his own. Eschewing a short field goal attempt on 4th and goal from the 3-yard line, Griffis called upon Baldwin once again and the sophomore scoring machine simply followed his line mates into the end zone to put the Spartans up 21-3 midway through the 2nd quarter.

Page 21: BROAD RUN FOOTBALL 2017 SEASON IN REVIEW

Spartan senior and captain Michael Arrington put an end to the next Eagle drive by picking off Freedom quarterback Jack Fitzgerald. Mitch Griffis then hit Dominic Brazina, who turned the corner with a burst and ran over a would-be defender before sprinting 34 yards for yet another Spartan touchdown. This time, Freedom was able to answer, as Fitzgerald found wideout Zyan Collins open in the flat and the speedy senior did the rest, racing past the Spartan secondary for a 53-yard touchdown. Remember earlier in the article when I told you that Freedom was going to try and pull out all of the stops? Well, I wasn't kidding as the Eagles attempted and successfully executed an onside kick to get the ball back shortly before halftime. Fitzgerald then found senior Jeremy Cofield for a long gain, but Alijah Bragg and Kesean Dyson each had a sack of Fitzgerald, forcing the Eagles into another field goal try. Campbell again connected, and the pesky Eagles had cut the lead to 28-13 at the half. A 30-yard run by Baldwin and a 20-yard reception by Lindenfeldar quickly put the ball on the Freedom 9-yard line for the Spartans to start the 3rd quarter. Baldwin took it in from there and the Broad Run lead was now up to 35-13.

Stephen Harrison and Donovan Hale had a sack and an interception, respectively, putting an end to the next Eagle drive. Given the ball back, Mitch Griffis then completed two passes to Royce Bryson for 33 yards and a third pass to freshman Jake Busser for another 12. Senior Tiege Thompson then showed his running ability by rambling into the end zone from 8 yards out.

The Eagles were able to cut the lead to 42-19 following a Fitzgerald to Cofield touchdown, but the Spartans again turned to Thompson, who electrified his teammates with a 42-yard gain before his 11-yard touchdown run closed out the scoring. With the 49-19 victory, the Spartans now sit at 8-0 and continue to hold down the #1 seed in the region. The Spartans should have no trouble finding motivation next week as it will be Senior Night against their crosstown rivals from Briar Woods.

Broad Run Bests Briar in Battle for a Better Cause, 16-14 It has been said many times that you can toss out the win-loss records when the Broad Run Spartans and the Briar Woods Falcons get together for their annual clash. Perhaps this cliche was never more true than it was this year, as the undefeated Spartans had all they could handle from their one-win neighbors from Downtown Brambleton in a tense 16-14 victory on Senior Night. It was apparent from the start that nothing would come easy to the Spartans on this night. The Falcons came out firing on their first. Following three completions the Falcons had driven down to the Spartan 29-yard line, but the Broad Run defense snuffed out an attempted 4th down conversion and gave the ball to their offense. The Spartans were able to put together an impressive 13-play drive but it took a 3rd and 21 conversion on a pass to Dominic Brazina from Mitch Griffis to put Broad Run on the board. Following a poor snap on an attempted punt on the next Falcon possession, the Spartans were held to a 30-yard field goal by Attila Buri. Still, at this point the Spartans were feeling pretty good about themselves with a 10-0 lead. After forcing a three and out, the Spartans took over on offense hoping to put the Falcons away. Griffis looked downfield and let it fly but Briar Woods linebacker Cameron Gillie made an incredible one-handed interception that breathed life back into the Falcons. A 5-yard touchdown pass by the Falcons ensured that the Spartans would remain in a dogfight with their overmatched neighbors. Despite a first down at the Falcon 25 with 1:13 left in the half, the Spartans were thwarted on the drive and went to halftime with a three point lead. The teams would trade possessions in the 3rd without any scoring until there was 3:26 left in the quarter. On 3rd and 5 from the Falcon 10, Griffis took off running and it looked to the entire world like he would make it to the sticks, if not the end zone, but he ran smack into the line judge and fell a yard short. On 4th and 1, the Spartans took a delay of game

penalty and Matt Griffis decided to once again turn to Buri. His kick was true from 27 yards out as the Spartans stretched their lead to 13-7 with less than two minutes to go in the 3rd. A team with nothing to lose is a dangerous team. Down by only six, Falcon Coach Mike Groves opted to go for it on 4th and inches from his own 37. Cameron Gillie was able to convert but a Michael Arrington sack of the Falcon quarterback later forced Briar to punt on the last play of the 3rd quarter. Tiege Thompson got loose on the next Spartan possession and sprinted 55 yards for an apparent touchdown but a holding call negated the play. Two Griffis completions and five carries by Thompson put the ball close enough for Buri's third field goal of the night, putting the Spartans up 16-7.

Page 24: BROAD RUN FOOTBALL 2017 SEASON IN REVIEW

Down by 9 with less than six minutes to play, the Falcons had every reason to lay down and quit, but they would have none of it. Senior Jackson Casillas made a huge catch that led to a touchdown run by Gillie with 2:44 left in the game, trimming the Spartan lead to 16-14.. An unsportsmanlike call against the Spartans following the touchdown meant that the Falcons would be kicking off from midfield. With the whole world expecting to see an onside kick, Coach Groves inexplicably chose to instead have his kicker boot the ball into the end zone for a touchback. This decision would prove to be a costly one, as the Falcons never got the ball back. Tiege Thompson and his offensive line were able to run out the clock with a couple of hard-fought first downs. The Spartans collectively let out a sigh of relief as they shook hands with their familiar opponents. The win sets up a showdown next week with the Stone Bridge Bulldogs. Both teams will enter the contest with 9-0 records, the first time that this has happened in Loudoun County since the Spartans hosted the Park View Patriots in 2007. The winner will earn not only the Potomac District crown, but the #1 seed in the region and home field advantage.

Spartans Finally Fall, 21-13

By kickoff, every available spot in the stands of Stone Bridge High School was spoken for, though more kept coming. The air was electric with anticipation, as though something had to give and was just about to. Coming into their annual showdown, Ashburn rivals Broad Run and Stone Bridge each carried perfect 9-0 records and hopes of regular-season perfection, neighborhood bragging rights and the Potomac District championship. When it was all said and done, the Spartans saw those dreams of an undefeated season and a second consecutive Potomac District Championship dashed, but they also learned a little about themselves in the process. They discovered that no stage is too big for them, and that they can compete with any team in the state.

Junior Dominic Mell got the scoring started for the Bulldogs late in the 1st quarter. He broke free of the strong Spartan defense and ran 54 yards for the only score of the 1st half. Much like last season's regular season classic, neither team was able to get much going on offense in a first half dominated by defense. Despite not playing their best ball, the Spartans went into their locker room at half down by only 7, and would receive the second half kickoff. Less than 20 seconds into the second half, however, Stone Bridge senior Jack Kosko recovered a Spartan

fumble deep in Broad Run territory. Mell quickly made the Spartans pay with his second touchdown on the night from 19 yards out. A lesser team might have given up considering the circumstances and the way things were breaking against them, but despite trailing 14-0, Broad Run found their offense in the middle of the third quarter. Sophomore quarterback Mitch Griffis broke off a field-flipping 30-yard run, then connected with senior wideout Donovan Hale to convert on a huge fourth-and-eight. That set up sophomore back Tim Baldwin’s tackle-breaking touchdown run from 14 yards out. Despite the slow start, Broad Run head coach Matt Griffis noted his offense’s steady improvement. The Spartans hit six plays for 10 or more yards in the second half, compared with just one 11-yard quarterback scramble in the first.

Page 26: BROAD RUN FOOTBALL 2017 SEASON IN REVIEW

It was the Bulldogs' turn next, and once again they turned to Mell. He did not disappoint, and capped off a 58-yard drive with a 10-yard touchdown run. Heading into the fourth quarter with a 21-6 lead, the Stone Bridge offense coughed up a fumble early in the final period which was recovered by Broad Run sophomore linebacker Kesean Dyson and returned eight years for a Spartans touchdown. The Spartans had cut the lead to just 8.

The Broad Run defense, which had been so strong against the run all year, came out looking for one last stop so that the offense might have a chance to tie things up. However, with nine minutes to play and just a one score lead, the Bulldogs did what they do best: hand the ball off to Mell in heavy sets for short yardage and three crucial fourth down conversions, before putting the game on ice in victory formation as the clock struck 0:00.

"I'm extremely proud of our guys for fighting until the very end. We had a chance to win right down to the last minute and a half," Spartan coach Matt Griffis said. "Our kids never gave up and kept persevering. Now, we have got to get ready to move on to the next season."

Both squads will now focus their attention on the Region 5C playoffs. By virtue of their outstanding seasons, both will begin at home versus lower-seeded opponents. The Bulldogs enter as the region’s top seed and could serve as host through the regional championship, while the Spartans will finish as the #2 seed and host two games at home.

Spartans Whip Wakefield, 49-7, Will Host Tuscarora Next

One of the advantages of having a successful regular season is that you get to host your first playoff game. Another advantage is that you will typically be rewarded by being paired with a less successful opponent in the first round. Such was the case Friday night as the Spartans hosted the Wakefiled Warriors of Arlington. The Spartans were familiar with their first round foe, having defeated the Warriors during the regular season in 2015 (40-6) and again in 2016 (41-6). Perhaps this familiarity proved to be too daunting for Wakefield, who never recovered from the early Broad Run onslaught as the Spartans rolled to a 49-7 victory.

One of the goals for Coach Griffis and his Spartan offense was to re-establish their running game. Tim Baldwin entered the playoffs with an astounding 22 rushing touchdowns, but had only picked up one over the last two contests. Behind seniors Matt Fiume, Javier Varela, and Liam McCracken, the Spartans certainly were able to assert their rushing dominance, as Baldwin picked up five touchdowns on just 13 carries. Quarterback Mitch Griffis also found Jake Busser on a 27-yard touchdown toss and Josh Anderson-Jessop (11 carries for 85 yards) closed out the Spartan scoring with a 5-yard touchdown run. Senior Detwaun Turner hauled in three passes on the night, continuing his unheralded but impressive streak of catching at least one pass in every game this year.

Coach Gordon's defensive unit did allow a last-minute touchdown, but were in complete control throughout the contest. Led by Johnathan Birchmeier, who moved from linebacker to tackle/end for the night, the Spartan front completely dominated the match-up with the Warrior's offensive line. Any plays that were fortunate enough to make it past or around Birchmeier were quickly snuffed out by his defensive linemates Alijah Bragg, Ryan Gorey, and Zangar Smith. Seniors Royce Bryson, Tiege Thompson, and Michael Arrington made sure that this would not be their last home game, with Bryson adding an interception on the night. With the convincing win, the Spartans earn the right to host the Tuscarora Huskies next week. Broad Run has now won three in a row against the Huskies, but the Spartans are fully aware of how dangerous their opponent is. Win or lose, the Spartan seniors know that this will be the last time that they ever take the field at Broad Run. One thing is for certain: You can expect an emotional battle from this group and a fight right down to the very end.

Spartans Stunned in Regional Semi-Final, Fall to Tuscarora 14-12

The Broad Run Spartans had the Tuscarora Huskies right where they wanted them. Sophomore quarterback Mitch Griffis had led his team on a spectacular final drive that consumed almost nine minutes. With an impressive mix of passing and running, the Spartans found themselves trailing by just two in a first-and-goal situation from the 5-yard line with 1:28 left in the contest. Their strategy was simple : Either punch it in for a touchdown and make the Huskies go the length of the field to score a touchdown to beat you or be content to dive up the middle and force the Huskies to use all of their time outs if they were able to stop you, and then kick a field

goal from extra point distance to take a one point lead with less than a minute left.

It was the Spartan defense that gave Broad Run Head Coach Matt Griffis the confidence to be content with either outcome. The unit had put together its' finest effort of the year, holding the powerful Tuscarora offense to a single score on the night. Even the lone Husky offensive touchdown came on an improbable 4th and goal goal from 23 yards out.

And so after being stopped by the Huskies on 3rd down, Broad Run set up for a 21-yard field goal attempt, which would have given them the lead. On a cold November night, in front of their hometown crowd, the Spartan attempt missed wide right by inches and the Huskies celebrated their win, 14-12.

“Our defense had to step up,” Tuscarora senior defensive back Alex Lee said. “We all just competed and worked hard. In the end, it all paid off.”

Following a Tim Baldwin touchdown for the Spartans, it was Lee who got the Huskies’ defense fired up early in the second quarter when he jumped the route and picked off Griffis, returning the ball 70 yards for a touchdown as Tuscarora took a 7-6 lead.

The Tuscarora defense kept the Broad Run offense quiet for the remainder of the first half before the Spartans opened the third quarter with a fantastic kickoff return by senior Frank McGhee III. The return eventually led to a 1-yard touchdown run by Baldwin – his second of the night – as Broad Run pulled within two points, pending a two-point conversion attempt.

Once again, Tuscarora defense stepped up to sack Griffis on the conversion attempt to maintain their two-point lead.

While the defense shined for both teams, the Tuscarora offense did have its fair share of chances throughout the game. What looked to be a 51-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the fourth quarter was called back for a penalty. On the very next play, however, Tuscarora junior quarterback Justin Allen just barely overthrew his wide open target on the same exact play.

Page 30: BROAD RUN FOOTBALL 2017 SEASON IN REVIEW

Still, it was the Spartan offense that was able to march down the field and put themselves in a position to win. The Tuscarora coaching staff was powerless to stop the last drive, admitting on the sidelines that they were a step behind on each big 3rd or 4th down conversion. It all came down to a short kick that simply missed the uprights by perhaps the width of a football.

Although it was a heart-wrenching way to end their season, the 2017 Spartans will be able to look back with a sense of pride and accomplishment. Coming into the

season, no one believed that they were capable of a double digit win total. Well, no one except the Spartans, themselves, and perhaps their dedicated coaches. Amazingly, for the fifth season in a row, it took the eventual Regional Champion to put an end to the Spartan's season.
