A 'Total Literacy' Permanent Project of RC Bharuch

RC Bharuch started a Literacy project during Rotary Year 2012-13, with the purpose of helpingacademic performance of girls studying in govt municipality school & residing in the Govtjuvenile home , the information received was that the girls mostly from economically backwardtribal areas whose parents could not afford to send them to better schools or extra coachingclasses . The main purpose was to improve the results of 75 girls appearing for the SSC board inMarch 2013 and improve the standard of English of all the girls ( std 1st -10th). The projectstarted with the help of 5 voluntary teachers and was named “Hum Honge Kamyab” Theconsequence of the efforts of all the teachers was that 50% of the Girls cleared their board examswhere as earlier only very few girls were able to clear these exams. This gave a major boost to theproject and the morale of the volunteers and members of RC Bharuch and so it was decided tomake it a permanent project. In the year 2013-14 problem areas were identified and worked uponby the team of HHK, plans were revised it was decided to coach all the girls in all subjects ( Std 1st -10th) and 4 more teachers were involved along with a regular paid teacher, to help the girls withtheir homework, daily studies and to give them regular practise to keep them at par with otherchildren in their school.

The girls of all classes had great difficulty in their English and Maths subjects but by thecontinuous efforts of the Maths and English tutors they not only have improved theirmathematical skills remarkably but they now greet the visitors in English and can understandsimple instructions given to them in English. Apart from improving their vocabulary in Englishtheir handwriting and grammar too have been improved . In 2014-15 main focus in English is toimprove their reading skills, for which a library has been built with books collected frommembers . RC Bharuch donated classroom furniture in year 2013-14 and provides the requiredstationary every year. In the year 2012-13 total of 150 classes in various subjects were conductedby 5 teachers which increased to 900 Classes by 9 teachers in 2013-14. The most encouragingpart is that few more enthusiastic volunteers will be part of the HHK team, 15 teachers will now betaking more than 1500 classes in the new year 2014-15. This project has not only improved theacademic performance but has made tremendous improvement in the level of self confidence ofthese girls

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL INFORMATION

ROTARY HISTORY - "Why the Rotary Year Begins 1 July"

Ever wonder why the Rotary year begins 1 July? The international convention initially

played a key role in determining the start date of our fiscal and administrative year.

Rotary's first fiscal year began the day after the first convention ended, on 18 August

1910. In 1911 the first day of the fiscal year1911-12 began after the convention on 21

August. At its August 1912 meeting, the Board of Directors ordered an audit of the

International Association of Rotary Clubs' finances. The auditors recommended that

the organization end its fiscal year on 30 June to give the secretary and treasurer time

to prepare a financial statement for the convention and board, and determine the

proper number of club delegates to the convention. The executive committee

concurred, and at its April 1913 meeting, designated 30 June as the end of the fiscal

year. This also allowed for changes to the schedule for reporting club membership

and payments. Even The Rotarian changed its volume numbering system to

correspond to the fiscal year (beginning with vol. 5, July 1914).Rotary continued to

hold its annual conventions in July or August until 1917. Delegates to the 1916 event

to hold future conventions in June, mainly

because of the heat in cities where most of

them occurred. The next one was held 17-21

June in Atlanta, Georgia. ."Since the executive

committee's decision in 1913, the end of the

Rotary year has remained 30 June and the

term "Rotary year" has been used to signify

Rotary's annual administrative period. (source
