A burglar was sent to
prison for robbing a
stately home, but he
refused to tell the guards
where he'd hidden the
loot. A few months later,
his wife wrote to him and
said, "Now that you're in
jail, there's no one to dig the back
garden. I suppose I'll have to do it
myself." So the robber wrote back
saying, "Don't you dare dig up the back
garden, that's where I buried the stuff
from the stately home!" And he handed
the letter to a warden to post. A week
later he got another letter from his wife.
It said, "You'll never believe it-
yesterday thirty guards came around
and dug up the entire back
garden!" And the robber
wrote back." Now plant
the saplings!"

Rotarians Pledge to eradicate illiteracy from
India
After a successful “End Polio” program thatresulted in eradication of polio from India andnearly 99% from the rest of the world, theRotarians in South Asia are motivated to adoptRotary's Total Literacy Mission. In India, the
Rotary India Literacy Mission wishes to achieve the literacygoals through its T-E-A-C-H program: - Teacher Support -e-Learning Adult Literacy Child Development - HappySchools Thus the T-E-A-C-H “program” includes five“projects”, each with specific focus but inter-linked with theothers in objective and content so as to contribute to theprogram goal of total literacy accompanied withimprovement in learning outcomes of primary/ elementaryeducation and spread of adult literacy in various parts of thecountry. As a part of the above Rotary India Literacy Missiontakes the a step towards literacy by building a library of onemillion story books for children for I to V th standard. A libraryis not just a room full of books - it is a room full of dreams, aroom full of new lives. A campaign,“A Million Books, A MillionSmiles” is started to attain thisdream. Receiving donation of all oldstory books, comic books will help tobuild this dream library. Rotary IndiaLiteracy Mission is here with itscampaign, “A Million Books, AMillion Smiles”.

Sustainable Tree Plantation
Tree planting. Everyone does it. Schools do it, NGOs do it, MNCs do it. Last week, the Road Transport and Highways
minister Nitin Gadkari announced that he plans to plant 200 crore trees along 1 lakh kilometres of highways! Experts will
tell you that if you really do love the environment, you should think before you plant that next sapling. The National
Forest Policy (1988) aims to have at least one-third of the country's total land area under forest or tree cover, but planting
the wrong trees can, in fact, do more harm than good. Planting in the wrong season is also not good, in India planting is done in July since monsoon sets in
June and the ground is drenched in water , since there is delay in the rains it is better to postpone Tree plantation after the monsoon sets in. If the little
sapling you are inserting into the ground is not native to your region, there is every possibility they will catch diseases and be zapped by the weather in a
way that native trees won't. They may also require more water and other resources for their maintenance that we may not be able to afford. Non-native
trees can also be harmful to native flora, - eucalyptus, which is widely planted in India, strips the soil of moisture and nutrients and renders the soil in the
area infertile. They can also be very expensive, costing huge amounts of public money. Also, the roots of giant sprawling trees in cramped urban spaces
may damage compound walls, building foundations and water or sewage pipelines. We need to consider what purpose we want a tree to serve in a
particular area, and select the species and location accordingly. It is also important to consider where trees are being planted. Schools or parks are fine,
but it is vital to have trees along roads to provide shade and improve air quality. The city centre needs more trees, but if that's not possible on the ground
level, why not consider rooftops? To really make a difference to our atmosphere by planting trees, it is necessary to take responsibility for educating
oneself about trees. The key focus has to be maintaining trees and keeping survival rates high - making sure the roots have enough space to grow, enough
water, fencing to protect them from cattle, etc. We need to consult experts trained in horticulture who can give us advice on which species to pick and how
to plant them. The most appropriate trees for plantation in this area will be Kadam,Kesuda, Saptaparna, Neem, Palcoforam, Mango, Badam etc The trees
should have plenty of foliage to give shade and the location for plantation should be selected such that there is enough space for the trees to grow in
future. We have to ensure our future by reviving in youngsters the interest and importance of tree conservation. An urban
forestry drive cannot be a success without people's involvement. We could go to each locality and ask them what kind of trees
they want on their roadside - flowering trees, fragrant trees, fruit trees…. This is the season for our tree planting projects. Let
us select our trees and the spaces in which to plant them wisely! But lets all Pray to Lord Indra for the Rains first !!

District Grants allowed for Low Cost SheltersAt the April 2014 meeting of the Trustees, a decision has been taken to allow the constructionof LOW COST SHELTERS using DISTRICT GRANTS.
Trustees eliminated the following funding restrictions from district grants :
- Rotary Youth Exchange, RYLA, Rotaract or Interact, - Construction, - Travel for staff ofcooperating organization - Activities primarily implemented by an organization other than Rotary
Please note that removing the restriction on construction from the grants criteria will allow low-costshelters to be an eligible activity within district grants, by Rotary Clubs & Districts. They therefore can startconstructing low cost shelters using district Grants. For clubs in India / South Asia, this means that districtsabroad, can send you their district funds for the construction of low cost shelters. Many districts abroadhave such funds available. They will be happy to help by sending your funds, after you establish thenecessary contacts. The cost of the shelter is not restricted. We know that in our part of the world, we canget a low cost, 250sft 350sft shelter in $2500. You will need to establish contact with districts abroad, whocan gift their district funds (DDF) to you for shelters, as a joint project Please note the land/ plot for
the shelters must be donated, gifted, received from a Trust etc. It can be purchased if extra money /
donor is available, but NOT from District Funds.
Let us start. Let us get shelters going again. A home is where the Family begins.
A home brings hope. It gives self respect & it brings security. Share this information
with your clubs & have a District Shelter Committee. Send me the names of the
Chair. Write to me if more information is needed. But do mention this in your Grants.
