ANTS BE GONE from Judy H.
Do you have an ant problem? In-side or out... This will get rid of them... Homemade Ant Killer
What's so cool about this is, it took them 2 minutes to find it & 5 minutes to fill it up! 1 empty water bottle (Cut it down to about 2" tall) 5 T baking soda
5 T powdered sugar 3 T water. Take a small amount of powdered sugar
& mix it with an equal amount of baking
soda & water. Pow- dered sugar is es-
sential…. You cannot use the larger
grains of sugar for this.
Mix the 2 powders together & place
small amounts against the walls or
other areas where you would not nor-
mally walk but where you would nor-
mally see the ants. The ants will be at-
tracted to the sugar & will eat some of it
& collect more to take home to feed others, so all of them will get their
share.
The sugar & baking soda powders are
similar in size & once mixed together,
the ants cannot separate the 2. So, as
they eat the sugar, they will also ingest
the baking soda, which they would oth-
erwise never touch (this is the reason
for using powdered sugar). Once the ants eat the baking soda it will
react with the formic acid in their stom-
achs & cause ‘gas’. The bodies of ants
are unlike humans; they cannot elimi-
nate ‘gas’ so it will build up & eliminate
them.
FINALLY...HERE IT IS!
‘How to clean your cookie sheets’
- Kitchen "Miracle" Cleaner! Put about 1/4 cup of baking soda in a small glass bowl & squirt in hy-drogen peroxide until it makes a nice paste. Rub it on the offend-ing dirt/stain/grease...whatever!
You can usually just use your fin-gers...but you can also use a small sponge as well.

BRINNON CRIER October 2014

Mike and Eloise Langenbach are passionate about the Brinnon Food Bank. The one thing they want everyone to know is that the Food Bank is feeding our neighbors, those who might not otherwise have the basic items to make a meal. The Food Bank has continued to grow as new people moved into the area and today feeds 685 people per month. On average, that’s 13,000 pounds of food dis-tributed in a month including 2700 pounds of fresh, seasonal produce from neighboring gardens. Mike and Eloise started volunteering with the Food Bank in 2009 and give a lot of their time and en-ergy. They also lead a group of 29 volunteers, all hard working people with big hearts. In total, vol-unteers drive 3200 miles per month picking up food from QFC in Port Hadlock, Oroweat in Bremer-ton and Trader Joe in Silverdale. Other food comes from Food Lifeline and Northwest Harvest. Vol-unteers spend endless hours unloading food, putting it away and bringing it out for the clients each week. The Food Bank would not be able to operate without the volunteers that give freely and will-ingly of their time to help their neighbors. The Food Bank has no income and is dependent on donations to cover its operating expenses of rent, electricity, the shipping and warehousing of some food and purchasing those staples that aren’t donated. Last Thanksgiving, that included over 80 turkeys to make up baskets of holiday food sta-ples for each family registered with the Food Bank. In 2011, the Food Bank raised enough money to purchase and equip a walk-in freezer, which allows them to accept and store larger quantities of food for distribution. I asked Eloise what was on her “Wish List”. Besides more room to efficiently move people through the various areas, Eloise said she wanted to reach out to the community to help locate those people who are not able to have food to eat or provide their children with good, balanced meals. Some of your neighbors are so overwhelmed with medical bills, insurance, utilities, medicine, etc. that they put food last. The Brinnon Food Bank hopes to provide a life line by reaching out to these folks. I asked Eloise what motivates her to work so hard for the Food Bank. “We love Brinnon and if we can make it a better place, that’s great. A friend of ours told us that you have to do this job with a good heart. I hope we do that”. You surely do Eloise! This October 11th, from 10:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. the Brinnon Food Bank will hold it’s annual food drive at the Halfway House parking lot. This is the only time of year that they solicit and collect do-nations of food and cash. Be sure to drop by and meet the Langenbachs, the other Food Bank vol-unteers and make a donation to this exceedingly worthwhile organization. If you have the time, con-sider donating some of that to help make Brinnon a better community for all our neighbors.
Thanks to Kari Walter

BRINNON CRIER October 2014
The Brinnon Fire Department would like to express our thanks to the commu-
nity for their support in passing the Fire Levy Lid Lift ballot proposal in the
last election.
Brinnon Fire Department participates in the File of Life Program – we have
FREE magnets and wallet kits that contain forms for you to fill out regarding
medical history and medications. This information can greatly assist person-
nel in delivering medical aid should you be unable to speak or uncon-
scious. We also have free window stickers that will help us to quickly deter-mine if information is available. The free kits are available at Fire Station 41,
or available from our crews if you see them out and about.
We have teamed up with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Coast
Guard Auxiliary and have begun a water rescue program. We are housing
and maintaining a 19 foot Zodiak Boat belonging to the Sheriff’s Office. Our
staff has undergone training on behalf of the Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Coast
Guard Auxiliary. The Fire Department will be assisting those agencies with
calls for service involving people and vessels in distress and other maritime
emergencies. Our first emergency call using the boat occurred in late Sep-
tember regarding a vessel that sank in Pleasant Harbor, just 12 hours after
our initial orientation to the boat and placing it in service. Our boat crews are
cross trained as Firefighters, EMT’s, and Coast Guard Auxiliary.
The Fire Department underwent an audit and re-rating with the Washington
Surveying & Reporting Bureau. This agency evaluates criteria used by insur-
ance companies to develop insurance rates and loss costs. We are happy to
announce that the overall rating improved to a 7 from an 8 rating. This means
that residents living within a five mile radius of the main fire station in central
Brinnon may enjoy lower rates. The Chief and staff worked with water pur-
veyors within the various housing developments, gathered water data, and
mapped the fire hydrant systems, which assisted in the improved rat-
ing. We’ve also developed a business safety inspection program. The depart-
ment improved efficiency and demonstrated improved competence over the
past two years.
The county-wide burn ban is off, beginning October 1st and normal outdoor
burning rules will be in place. The Fire Department has instituted a manda-tory outdoor burn permit program, effective October 1st, 2014. Residential
burning is allowed with a free permit valid for one year after visiting Fire Sta-
tion 41 to apply. Larger burns and burns being done commercially or on be-
half of a property owner require a different permit with a fee assessed and a
site inspection. Recreational fires such as camp fires do not require a permit.

School has started and so has the BackPack Nutrition Program for Chil-dren. We need YOUR help. Hunger is a problem in Jefferson County for many of the children. Many of the school children who receive the major-ity of their nutritional needs at no cost in the school cafeteria during the week are food‐insecure on the weekend.
Donations are being sought for the BackPack Nutrition program for Chil-dren. What is this program? A small group of volunteers are providing back packs of food for weekend meals for children in Quilcene & Brinnon School who otherwise would go hungry. Our team shop for food, fill the back-packs and deliver them to the school for distribution. We are providing meals for 30 children in Quilcene and 13 in Brinnon for the weekend . The need is great. It costs approximately $6.50 to feed one child for a weekend, $225 for the school year. We believe the community will come together to help us raise the necessary funds to sustain this program for the school year. Will you sponsor a child in your community? All monies received are used to purchase food at the lowest cost possible.
Checks can be made out to “Quilcene Lions Club Food Back Packs for Kids”. Deposits can be made at US Bank, 14890 Center Rd, Quilcene, WA. 98376. If you donate to United Good Neighbors (UGN), please designate the monies to the “Quilcene BackPack Program”.
Help is also needed to pack the backpacks. If interested, please contact Patti Herold @ [email protected]
Together we can ease the hunger crisis right in our own backyard.
Sincerely,
Patti Herold & the BackPack Volunteers
