FOREWORD
MSME-DI, Thrissur, as part of its activities has prepared the District Industrial Profile of Kottayam District during 2016-17. The objective to prepare the Industrial Profile of Kottayam is to make the information readily available in respect of general characteristics of the district, administrative set up, industrial scenario, potential for new MSMEs, details of existing clusters and general issues raised by industry associations etc. to the existing as well as prospective entrepreneurs.
It is expected that this Industrial Profile will be useful for Governmental & Non-Governmental organizations, Promotional & Developmental Agencies engaged in promotion & development of MSME sector in Kottayam District and also for academicians / research scholars.

BRIEF INDUSTRIAL PROFILE OF KOTTAYAM DISTRICT
1. General Characteristics of the District
Kottayam is a city in the state of Kerala. It is located in central Kerala and
is also the administrative capital of Kottayam district. Bordered by the lofty and
mighty Western Ghats on the east and the Vembanad Lake and paddy fields of
Kuttanad on the west, Kottayam is a land of unique characteristics. Positioned a
little south to central Kerala, Kottayam district is bordered on the north by
Ernakulam district, on the east by Idukki district and on the south by Alappuzha
and Pathanamthitta districts. The Vembanad Lake forms the western boundary.
Kottayam lies between latitude 9o 15' and 10o 21' and longitude 76o 22' and 77o
25'. Kottayam district has a total area of 2208 sq. km. The important rivers of the
district are the Meenachil River, the Muvattupuzha River and the Manimala
River. Kottayam stands first in the field of Education, Mass Communication,
Printing and Book Publication. The city is an important trading center of spices
and commercial crops, especially rubber. Most of India's natural rubber
originates from the acres of well-kept plantations of Kottayam.
1.1 Location & Geographical Area
Kottayam district has a total area of 2208 sq. km. The district is naturally
divided into high land, midland and lowland, the bulk being constituted by the
midland regions. Meenachil and Kanjirappally Taluks have high land and
midland areas while Kottayam, Changanassery and Vaikom Taluks have midland
and lowland areas. Kanjirappally and Meenachil Taluks have Laterite soil, where
as Vaikom Taluk, part of Changanassery and Kottayam Taluks have Aluvial soil.
The district has no coastal area.
1.2 Topography
The district is naturally divided into high land mid land and low land, the
bulk being constituted by the mid land regions. The Vembanad lake forms the
western boundary. The district is naturally divided into high land, midland and

Kanjirappally Taluks have high land and midland areas while Kottayam,
Changanassery and Vaikom Taluks have midland and lowland areas.
Kanjirappally and Meenachil Taluks have Laterite soil, where as Vaikom Taluk,
part of Changanassery and Kottayam Taluks have Aluvial soil. The district has
no coastal area.

1.3 Availability of Minerals
Kottayam district has rich mineral deposits of lime shell and graphite.
Lime shell deposits are exploited by units like Travancore Cements limited,
Travancore Electro Chemicals available Ltd, etc. for industrial purpose. Granite
is also available in highland position of Kanjirappally Taluk which can be
utilized by industries engaged in the stone crushing, granite polishing etc.

1.4 Forest
Forest plays an important role in the district by influencing climate,
geography, agriculture, employment, etc. The district has 8141 ha of forest land
(3.71 percent of total area) of which 54 Sq. Km. is forest land with trees, mostly
plantation crops. The Kottayam high range circle has four forest divisions-
Kottayam, Munnar, Kothamangalam and Mankulam.

1.5 ADMINISTRATIVE SETUP
Kottayam Revenue district is divided into 5 Taluks i.e. kottayam, vaikom,
kanjirappalli, changanssery and meenachil. These taliks have been further
divided in 11 development blocks. The District has been divided into two
Revenue Divisions- kottayam and Pala. Pala, comprising of Meenachil and
Vaikom Taluks with 42 Villages and Kottayam, comprising of Kottayam,
Kanjirappally and Changanassery Taluks with 53 Villages. Kottayam district is
divided 73 Panchayats and 4 Muncipalities. The district has 10 assembly
constituencies-Kanjirapally, Uzhavoor, Changanacherry, Kottayam,
Ettumannoor, Puthupally, Poonjar, Pala, Kaduthuruthy and Vaikom. The only
parliamentary constituency within the district is Kottayam.
