I trust that you’ll recognize the flexibility of my design, as these pieces span a variety of audiences and technologies. This portfolio contains projects from my 2006 - 2008 tenure with Clear Channel Radio and 2009 - 2011 employment with VTech Telecommunications. Clear Channel originally hired me to design sales presentations and collateral media, comprising the bulk of this collection, but I soon expanded into banner advertisements, web content and usability. Combing my interests in user experience and audio production propelled me to join VTech Telecommunications as a Human Factors Specialist, designing their software interfaces for consumer electronics and guiding acoustic performance. Let this collection serve as a starting point for future conversations about your UX objectives and their role in your unique branding fingerprint.

All Cellular line, Bluetooth headset, and directory download functions are connection dependentOnly one Bluetooth device can be used at a time, although multiple devices can be simultaneously paired and connected. Careful error handling was added for all connection interruptions, and calls could be sent back to the original cellular phone on command.

Base audio can be routed through corded handset, speakerphone and Bluetooth headsetThese audio sources are not tied to any line, but should be responsive when activated from the idle state, prior to line selection. A user setting was created to handle this hierarchy, especially as the [HEADSET] key could not automatically select the Cellular line, due to Bluetooth limitations. A similar setting was used for handset speakerphone and headset.

Cellular and multiline analog phone systems have different call waiting protocols and capabilitiesAnalog phone systems use a ‘flash’ electrical interruption to trigger subscribed services. However, celluar networks use a digital swap command to answer a call waiting. With the potential for conference calls to span networks, softkey labels needed to reflect an intelligent detection of an incoming call waiting -- and when subscriptions allowed, which key to press.

The abundance of features create a stronger dependence of idle alert/status messages User studies showed that our previous systems did not adequately communicate how to clear alert messages to most users. This product was the first to include a menu item that allowed users to selectively clear the alert messages that they no longer wished to view.

Different LCD resolutions for handset and base created differing text and cursor options.The base could accomodate 4 rows of 17-character text, while the handset accomodated 5 rows of 15-character text. I used 15-character labels for shared functions between base and handset, and relied more heavily on LED cues on the base, rather than reserve text rows for messages or icons.

For cost reduction, the handset Line 1 and Line 2 keys could not be backlit.To ensure that users understood which handset keys could answer an incoming call or a place a new call, I included heavy use of icons, text messages, and hierarchies built into the key programming.

No associated line for the handset [SPEAKERPHONE] key, typically used for toggling speakerphone modeA new hierarchy was developed for the key to select the first available line or answer an incoming call.

No [INTERCOM] and [REDIAL/PAUSE] keys on the base, due to I/O constraintsThe intercom function was inserted into the main menu according its priority amongst other menu tasks. Redial and pause were placed as base softkey functions, requiring critical softkey planning to mirror the handset interface as much as possible.

For cost reduction, the handset borrowed tooling from a previous 1-Line model.The first generation DS6151 reused a previous product’s mechanical housing, putting rocker keys under unrelated functions. User trials revealed that the rocker keys were often “mashed” together, resulting in unpredictable behavior. New mechanical handling was added, and keys were retooled for seperation.

7.3.11 HS: Make a speed dial call from Idle

Task Specific Information

If the user presses-and-holds a numeric key that is unassigned for speed dial and the directory has any stored entries, the Speed Dial Editor will appear, with the selector in the top row position at the numeric value that was pressed. o When in the Speed Dial Editor, pressing [TALK] or

[SPEAKER] when currently selecting an ‘unassigned’ slot will go off-hook with an empty dial buffer.

When a speed dial entry is recalled, it will appear on screen for 1 second before dialing out automatically using the earpiece delivery. o A user may dial out within the 1 second window

by pressing -DIAL-, [TALK] or [SPEAKER], and will go off-hook using the respective delivery means.

o A user may cancel a speed dial command within the 1 second window by pressing [OFF/CANCEL].

When assigning a directory entry to the speed dial, a “Loading directory…” notification message will appear for one second to notify users that they are being directed to the directory. The user can exit this process by using the [OFF/CANCEL] key.

Error Handling

The Directory cannot be accessed when: o The directory is empty. The LCD will display:

“Directory empty.” o Another handset is accessing the directory. The

LCD will display: “Directory unavailable. Currently in use by another handset.

At VTech, a sizeable portion of our Man-Machine Interface (MMI) documentation included step-by-step task flows to show the operations necessary to perform a given task. These tasks flows would also demonstrate any of the following events that may be related to the operation:

keypress inputstext display messagesshortkey labeling (optional)error handling LED activityicon presentationsaudio signalingsystem or message timeouts available shortcuts and processing architectures.

Most MMI documents contained over 150 pages of these task flows, depending upon the complexity of the product. These documents were built to withstand a considerable amount of change, given the amount of budgetary, legal, schedule, and technical obstacles that would surface between drafts. The diagrams for each task flow page were constructed in Microsoft Visio and imported into the final MMI documentation using Microsoft Word, employing OLE live links for automatic synchronization between the two applications. Within Visio, the flows were easily updatable by creating a library of master shapes, with instances automatically populating throughout the document upon any changes to the master.

Due to proprietary issues, the sample page shown on the left is a recreation of a task flow page using a fictional product and theoretical system architecture. This illustration only exists to provide a reasonable demonstration as to what these task flows and MMI documentation looked like.

All Clear Channel websites are a blend of local and nationally populated content. All websites

are required to adopt a corporate-approved template to promote brand consistency and

advertisement trafficking. However, all local aesthetic and content decisions were the

responsibility of the Digital Program Director, Station Program Director and myself.
