By Steve Andersen

The Grade 1, $750,000 Santa Anita Handi-cap on Saturday will have a smaller field than expected, with the early-week defections of the speedy Appealing Tale and the longshot Majes-tic Harbor.

Led by Mucho Macho Man and Will Take Charge, the first two finishers of the Breed-ers’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita last November, the race has a projected field of seven starters, and will draw Wednesday afternoon. One is a former claimer who has been an overachiever in the last 60 days.

Imperative, a 4-year-old Bernardini gelding, was claimed for $50,000 by owner KM Racing and trainer George Papaprodromou at Holly-wood Park on Dec. 21, the second-to-last day of racing in that track’s history. A start in the Big Cap became realistic after Imperative finished a hard-fought second by a half-length to Blingo in the Grade 2 San Antonio Stakes over 1 1/8 miles on Feb. 8.

“We didn’t think we’d get to the Big Cap,” Papaprodromou said with a smile earlier this week. “He’s improved tremendously in the last two races. We took a shot in the San Antonio and he ran a big race. We’ll take a shot at the Big Cap.”

Imperative began his career with Darley Stable and trainer Eoin Harty, winning as a 2-year-old and in an optional claimer last March. Imperative was dropped into claiming races last May, and started in his fifth claiming race when he was taken in December.

In the San Antonio, Imperative led on the turn and was within a head of Blingo at the eighth pole before giving way late. Kent Desormeaux rode Imperative in the San Antonio and retains the mount on Saturday.

“We have a jockey who rode the horse in the San Antonio,” Papaprodromou said. “He knows the horse. He knows what to do. Mucho Macho Man is the horse to beat and Will Take Charge ran great in the Breeders’ Cup. I hope Impera-tive can run a big race.”

Imperative is likely to be near the front, stalk-ing expected leader Game On Dude, who won the Big Cap in 2011 and 2013. Game On Dude was fifth in the San Antonio Stakes as the 3-10

favorite after engaging Blueskiesnrainbows in a speed duel.

Appealing Tale, the winner of two optional claimers over a mile on Jan. 4 and Feb. 1, was considered a Big Cap candidate in late February, but trainer Peter Miller said he has changed his mind. Appealing Tale could run in Saturday’s Grade 1, $350,000 Frank Kilroe Mile on turf.

“I don’t think he wants a mile and a quarter,” Miller said on Monday. “I think he wants a mile to a mile and an eighth.”

Majestic Harbor was second in the San Pasqual Stakes in January and fourth in the San Antonio. Trainer Sean McCarthy said on Monday that races at Fair Grounds and Oaklawn Park will be considered for 6-year-old Majestic Harbor.

Game On Dude, Imperative, Mucho Macho Man, and Will Take Charge are joined on the list of candidates by American Blend, Blingo, and Rousing Sermon.

Falling Sky might be horse to beat in Gulfstream Park Handicap

By Mike Welsh

Most of the attention Saturday in the Grade 2, $250,000 Gulfstream Park Handi-cap will be focused on Palace Malice and Itsmyluckyday, two of the major players on last year’s Triple Crown trail. Both will launch their 4-year-old campaigns in the race.

But the horse to beat could be another member of last year’s Triple Crown crop, Falling Sky, who already has turned in a couple of big efforts over the track this winter, including a 5 1/2-length triumph in the seven-furlong, Grade 3 Gulfstream Park Sprint Championship on Feb. 8.

Falling Sky finished 19th and last in the 2013 Kentucky Derby but seems to have found his niche this winter in one-turn races at distances ranging from seven furlongs to a mile. Trained by George

Weaver, Falling Sky finished a game second to the odds-on Revolutionary in his 2014 debut going a mile in January before turning back to seven-eighths to dominate the Gulfstream Park Sprint, earning a career-best 104 Beyer Speed Figure.

“We had some bad luck when I first ran him this fall at Laurel, but I was confi-dent he’d run well when we brought him back down here since he’d already shown a liking for this track last winter,” Weaver said. “I thought he ran a very good race against Revolutionary, and then every-thing really came together in the Sprint.”

Weaver said he considered several options for Falling Sky after the Sprint, including the Grade 2 San Carlos Stakes at Santa Anita this Saturday or awaiting the Grade 1 Carter Handicap in New York, before opting for the one-mile Gulfstream Park Handicap.

“If I had my choice, I’d say seven furlongs is his optimum distance,” Weaver said. “But I really didn’t want to ship him all the way to California, and he’s such a feeling-good type of horse, I don’t think it would have been in his best interests to wait seven or eight weeks for the Carter.

“His speed is really an asset over this track, and I think he’s a stronger, fitter, and tighter horse than he was when he ran a mile last time against Revolution-ary. So, I expect he’ll be able to handle stretching back to that distance just fine on Saturday.”

Falling Sky, a son of Lion Heart, will carry 118 pounds in the Gulfstream Park Handicap, one fewer than starting highweight Palace Malice and two more than Itsmyluckyday. Other likely starters include Brujo de Olleros (117), Sr. Quisqueyano (116), Narvaez (115), and Reveron (114).

Let’s take a look at a pair of sharp 3-year-olds expected to soon contest Derby preps.

Gala Award, a seven-figure yearling purchase trained by Todd Pletcher, won the Grade 3 Palm Beach Stakes at nine furlongs on turf last weekend at Gulfstream Park. Although campaigned exclusively on grass after three lifetime starts, Gala Award has dirt in his pedigree, acts like he’ll run all day, and may receive an opportunity to amass Kentucky Derby points in the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes over Keeneland’s Poly-track on April 12.

The Palm Beach boasted a deep and competitive field of twelve that featured graded stakes winner Mr Speaker and multiple stakes winner Storming Inti. Ridden by John Velazquez, Gala Award broke nicely from post position 9 and settled three wide while just off the leaders. Despite losing ground throughout, Gala Award was in strong contention turning for home, and he gamely wore down Storm-ing Inti while fending off Mr Speaker’s late flurry. Gala Award covered the distance in 1:46.19, polished off his last three furlongs in 34.58, and received a career-best 89 Beyer Speed Figure.

Gala Award is by Bernardini, a son of A.P. Indy that was named champion 3-year-old in 2006 after winning the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes, Grade 1 Travers Stakes, and Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup. Bernar-dini has passed on his strong stamina to his best offspring like Travers and Grade 1 Cigar Mile winner Stay Thirsty, Grade 1 Woodward Stakes and Cigar Mile hero To Honor and Serve, and Travers and Wood-ward winner Alpha.

Gala Award joins Stormello and My Best Brother as graded stakes winners produced from Wilshewed, by Carson City. Although Stormello’s big victory came in the Grade 1 Hollywood Futurity over synthetic Cushion Track, he also prevailed in the Grade 2 Norfolk Stakes on dirt. My Best Brother captured the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby at nine furlongs on turf.

Wilshewed placed twice on turf and is a half-sister to Italian Group 1-placed turf performer Saudi Desert, British stakes-winning turfer Braari, and multiple stakes winners Special Alert and Special Moves. Another half-sibling, Comfort Zone, is the dam of Grade 3-winning synthetic router The Pamplemousse and stakes winner American Lady.

Bernardini has “nicked” very well with Carson City mares as Grade 1 winner A Z Warrior and Grade 2 winner Wilburn are products of that particular breeding cross.

Gala Award sold for $1.55 million at the 2012 Keeneland September yearling auction. He was the second-highest-priced yearling at the sale and was a solid runner-up in his lone start at 2 last year. In his final start prior to the Palm Beach, Gala Award defeated 11 maidens at 1 1/16 miles on turf at Gulfstream.

Gala Award seems more of a grinding type than a 3-year-old with a quick and powerful burst. He stays nine furlongs

without a problem and has the tactical speed to find good early position. Turf horses often perform admirably on the Keeneland Polytrack, and Gala Award looms an appealing contender in that spot. If he runs well in the Blue Grass, Gala Award likely will receive an opportunity to prove his mettle on dirt in the Kentucky Derby.

The Trunk Monkey might be too fast for his own good as it pertains to the clas-sics, but the talented gray colt looks like a stakes-caliber sprinter/miler in the making.

Trained by Larry Jones, The Trunk Monkey is perfect from two starts. He made his debut over six furlongs at Fair Grounds on Jan. 31 and gave an impres-

sive effort. No secret as the 7-5 favorite, The Trunk Monkey was slow from the gate under Rosie Napravnik, but he soon pulled his way up to press the more experienced pacesetter, Glacken Too, through splits of 21.90 and 45.24 seconds. Glacken Too was a stubborn customer in the stretch, but The Trunk Monkey was resolute in his rally and ended up a neck better at the wire. Glacken Too flattered the race by returning to graduate with an 85 Beyer Speed Figure while the fourth-place finisher, Saint Finian, came back to win on turf with a 78 Beyer.

Entered as the lone “main-track-only” competitor in an entry-level optional claimer on Feb. 28, The Trunk Monkey drew into the off-the-turf event and

succeeded at odds-on in his first try around two turns. Again, he broke some-what awkwardly but was soon righted by Napravnik to track the pace from the outside. After an opening quarter of 23.40 seconds, The Trunk Monkey reeled off his next two furlongs in 22.75 and drew clear from his primary pursuer. Well ahead on the turn, The Trunk Monkey looked a bit tired in the stretch, but still finished 6 1/2 lengths better than runner-up Bern’ James Bern.

The Trunk Monkey is by second-crop stallion Old Fashioned, a son of Unbridled’s Song that won at distances between six and nine furlongs. Never out of the exacta from six starts, Old Fashioned grabbed the Grade 2 Remsen Stakes at 2 and the Grade

3 Southwest Stakes at 3 for these connec-tions. He has gotten off to a hot start at stud with Grade 1 winner Fashion Plate and Grade 3 winner Sweet Whiskey among his leading progeny.

The Trunk Monkey is the first foal from Susquehanna River, a Trippi mare that placed once from three sprint outings. The second dam, Kris’ Pine Sticks, by Pine Bluff, finished third in the Tropical Park Oaks at 1 1/16 miles on turf.

The Trunk Monkey will likely get a stern class and distance test in his next appear-ance. With all of the speed on the bottom half of the pedigree, it’s possible that he’s best followed as a Grade 1 King’s Bishop Stakes prospect at seven furlongs this summer at Saratoga.

Silvery Starlet proved worth the wait, as the seven-figure filly, now 4, made her first career start a winning one last Saturday at Gulfstream Park. Despite being stead-ied early and going wide on the far turn, the daughter of Unbridled’s Song, trained by John Kimmel, defeated maiden special weight competition by 1 1/2 lengths in the 1 1/16-mile turf event. She earned a 77 Beyer Speed Figure in her debut.

Silvery Starlet was a $1 million purchase by Mandy Pope’s Whisper Hill Farm at the 2011 Keeneland September yearling sale. The filly was among the earliest high-profile purchases for Pope, who has made headlines over the last 16 months by land-ing a number of prominent broodmare prospects, including Horse of the Year Havre de Grace ($10 million), Kentucky Oaks winner Plum Pretty ($4.2 million), and two-time champion Groupie Doll ($3.1 million). Regardless of the path her own racing career continues on, Silvery Starlet could prove an intriguing addition to that broodmare band in the future, as the final daughter out of Silvery Swan, an extremely successful producer.

Silvery Swan, a 20-year-old daughter of Silver Deputy, produced seven winners from eight starters, including four stakes horses to date. The unraced mare’s career got off to a flying start when her first foal, the Mr. Greeley colt El Corredor, captured four graded stakes, including the Grade 1 Cigar Mile in 2000.

Silvery Swan added a second Grade 1 winner to her résumé with Roman Ruler, a ridgling from the first crop of Fusaichi Pegasus. A multiple graded stakes winner as a juvenile, Roman Ruler missed the 2005 Triple Crown series due to various issues, but rebounded that summer to win the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational and finish third in the Travers Stakes.

Both of these Grade 1 winners have gone on to fashion successful careers for them-selves at stud. Roman Ruler, who stands at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms near Lexington, Ky., is the sire of Belmont Stakes winner Ruler On Ice, as well as Grade 1 winners Home-boykris and Artemis Agrotera. This year, he is represented on the track by stakes winner General a Rod, recently second in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth Stakes. El Corredor is the sire of Grade 1 winners Adieu, Backseat Rhythm, Crisp, and

Dominican. The horse also began his stud career at Hill ‘n’ Dale; after a brief stint in New York, he is standing the 2014 season at The Stallion at Copper Crowne in Opelou-sas, La.

Roman Ruler and El Corredor hail from the same sire line, as Fusaichi Pegasus is a son of Mr. Prospector, while Mr. Greeley was a grandson of that influential stallion. Silvery Swan’s success when crossed with the line may bode well for Silvery Starlet, as Unbridled’s Song is a great-grandson of Mr. Prospector.

Silvery Swan is also the dam of Silver Tornado, by Maria’s Mon, a Grade 3 winner on turf; and Maimonides, by Vindication, third in the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes as a juvenile. Maimonides stands at WinStar Farm in Versailles, Ky.

Bolstered by their success on the race-track, Silvery Swan’s progeny have been extremely popular in the auction ring, as well. Silvery Starlet was the fourth million-dollar foal out of her dam. Maimo-nides brought the highest price of the group

when he sold for $4.6 million to Ahmed Zayat’s Zayat Stables at the 2006 Keeneland September yearling sale. A half-sister by Mr. Greeley sold for $2.7 million to Robert and Beverly Lewis at the 2005 Keeneland September sale, but died the following year.

Following her racing career, Silver Tornado fetched $1.25 million while going to BBA Ireland at the 2004 Keeneland November sale.

Out of the Grade 1-placed Quack mare Sociable Duck, Silvery Swan is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Seducer, stakes winner Swift and Classy, and stakes-placed winners Croon and Smart Duck; the latter two were both sired by sons of Mr. Prospector.

Seducer and Swift and Classy both went on to solid broodmare careers in their own right. Seducer is the dam of Grade 3 winner Seducer’s Song, by Unbridled’s Song. Swift and Classy is the dam of Grade 3 winner Rydilluc, stakes winner Gold Wonder, and stakes-placed Dangerous Guy and Whambam.

KeeneLAnD photo Silvery Starlet, a daughter of Unbridled’s Song out of Silvery Swan, was bought by Mandy Pope for $1 million at the 2011 Keeneland September yearling sale and last week won her career debut at Gulfstream Park.

Beyer: Racing industry keeps horseplayers off balanceLeaders of the racing industry regularly

fret about the difficulty of attracting new fans. One of the sport’s problems, they say, is its long learning curve compared to other forms of gambling. A chimpanzee can readily learn to pull the handle of a slot machine, but a newcomer to racing can labor for months to learn the basics.

But instead of trying to simplify handicapping, the industry has gone in the opposite direction, making some basic factors – such as the class and distances of races – even more complex, to the point of incomprehensibility.

When I take neophytes to the track, I always give them a prerace tutorial. I used to begin by explaining the differ-ent types of races. The majority of horses run in claiming races for a price that represents their value. Better horses run in allowance events that have eligibility conditions such as non-winners of two races lifetime, non-winners of three, etc. I’d point to the section of Daily Racing Form past performances that express this information –“Clm5000” or “AlwN2”– and in a couple of minutes the newcomers had learned one of the key aspects of the sport.

They couldn’t do so anymore. As racing secretaries around the country try to cope with a shortage of horses, they have created hybrid conditions to make more horses eligible for a given race. They invented the optional claiming race, which might be open to both $20,000 claimers and allowance horses who are non-winners of two races lifetime. To attract additional horses, they add more clauses that turn hybrids into multi-headed mutants. These were the conditions for a race at Santa Anita on Feb. 14:

“For 4-year-olds and upward which have never won $10,000 three times other than Maiden, Claiming, Starter or State Bred, or which have never won four races, or which have not won $35,000 other than closed, claiming or starter at a mile or

over since August 1, 2013, or optional claiming price of $80,000.”

Such conditions confound even expe-rienced handicappers trying to judge whether one race is stronger than another. They have exasperated the people at Equi-base and Daily Racing Form who must compress information into the small space of the past performances reserved for the class of the race. “We don’t want to turn the PPs into hieroglyphics,” said DRF’s Rich Wroble. But when the conditions of a race at Gulfstream Park read “OC10k/SAL6k-N,” they look like hieroglyphics to most of us.

If race conditions once looked like a simple factor, so did distance. My tutorial for newcomers took less than a minute and explained that the furlong – one-eighth of a mile – is the unit of measurement in horse races and that the most common distances range from six furlongs to 1 1/8 miles. What could be complicated?

Well, in the U.S., horses have been tradi-tionally given a short running start to the point where the race officially begins. They might speed 40 or 50 feet till the leader hits the beam of light that activates the timing system. The untimed segment from gate to starting point is called the run-up.

Many tracks cannot run certain tradi-tional distances (such as one mile) because they start too close to the first turn, creat-ing a disadvantage for horses in outside posts and a hazard for jockeys.

Instead of running races at one mile, Tampa Bay Downs cards them at one mile and 40 yards (with a 24-foot run-up – a total of one mile and 144 feet.) However, most tracks don’t employ such truth in labeling. Santa Anita runs races that it labels “one mile” and gives the field a 172-foot run-up to the start. Try to explain to a beginner how a one-mile race can be longer than a mile and 40 yards.

Such complexities have multiplied as turf racing proliferates in the U.S. Gulfstream has run more than 40 races this winter at the odd distance of 7 1/2 furlongs. “Horse-men are begging for them,” track president Tim Ritvo said, “because they want to run

a shorter distance [than a mile].” Because these races start close to the turn, Gulf-stream employs run-ups as much as 250 feet, making 7 1/2 furlongs almost as long as a mile. (Nobody ever confused horsemen with rocket scientists.)

These long run-ups subvert handicap-ping. Most bettors look closely at horses’ past times in the first quarter-mile to determine if one runner possesses an advantage in early speed. But with a 250-foot run-up, timing doesn’t begin until the field has already run four or five seconds, so that published fractional times are useless. Gulfstream may change the run-ups from race to race, so that the starting gate causes less wear and tear on the turf course, making race-to-race comparisons meaningless, too.

There is a way to deal with these issues: time races from the instant the gate opens. The Trakus’s timing system, employed at Gulfstream, Santa Anita, Aqueduct, and other major tracks, can time races wher-ever a gate is positioned. “With modern technology, breaking a beam of light isn’t necessary,” said Pat Cummings, Trakus’ director of racing information.

Trakus could provide final times for, say, races at a mile and 250 feet, with frac-tional times clocked from the start. Yet Cummings anticipates traditionalists’ resistance to such a change, because horses clocked from a standing start record slow first-quarter times – a quarter-mile in 24 seconds, for example – compared to the running starts that produce first quar-ters in 22 seconds. Horsemen love speed, and breeders sell speed, so they might not like the looks of slow quarter-miles.

Bettors may detect a pattern here. Incomprehensible eligibility conditions abound because racing secretaries want them. Absurd distances with long run-ups exist because horsemen want them. Distances change because track superin-tendents want to protect their grass. Races may never be clocked in a rational fashion because horsemen don’t want slower-look-ing times. Does the sport ever do anything because the betting public wants it?
