A day later than usual, Del Mar launches its popular summer race meeting Thursday. But this year, the party does not stop Labor Day week.

Two months after the summer meeting closes Sept. 3, Del Mar will run a monthlong autumn meeting in November. The new meeting is part of a redistribution of racing dates following the closure of Hollywood Park last year.

“It’s a different year and a lot of uncertainty in all areas,” said track president Joe Harper. “We’ll learn some lessons and see how it works out.”

While the calendar has expanded, some things at Del Mar remain the same. Opening day will attract a rowdy crowd as always, and people-watching will be as much of a sport as the action on the track.

Thursday’s crowd will be massive – Harper expects more than 40,000 for the 10th consecutive year – and enthusiastic, with race fans in flip-

flops and shorts congregating on the track apron and the hipster crowd filling the grandstand and angling for coveted spots in the clubhouse. There is always a chance that the track’s all-time record for attendance of 47,339 from opening day in 2012 could be surpassed.

For Thursday, there are 10 races, highlighted by the $100,000 Oceanside Stakes for 3-year-olds on turf. The main race of the summer meeting is the Grade 1, $1 million Pacific Classic on Aug. 24, which is expected to include Shared Belief, the champion 2-year-old male of 2013, and Game On Dude, the winner of the race last year.

The turf course is new, having been replaced and widened over the winter to accommodate larger fields. Del Mar will host the Breeders’ Cup for the first time in 2017, and a larger turf course was needed for that event.

Tom Robbins, the track’s vice president of racing, expects full fields for turf races. There has been no turf racing on the Southern Cali-fornia circuit since the end of the Santa Anita spring-summer meeting June 29. The two-week

summer meeting at Los Alami-tos that ended Sunday was limited to dirt racing.

Robbins said the new turf course has six rail settings at six-foot increments, ranging from the permanent position, or zero setting, to a temporary rail 30 feet out from the permanent position. The old turf course had three settings at seven-foot ranges, from zero to 14 feet.

Five-furlong turf sprints have become popular, but Robbins said he is uncertain how many will be offered. The races tend to cause more wear and tear on the course because the horses’ hooves hit the ground harder than in longer races run at slower paces.

“We’ll play it by ear,” Robbins said of the turf sprints.

Del Mar has usually opened on a Wednesday, but this year, opening day was pushed back a day after track officials said they wanted an additional day to prepare the facility following the closure of the San Diego County Fair, which was held on the prop-erty through July 6.

“It’s always a challenge from the end of the fair to the open-ing of our meeting,” Harper said. “That’s why we took the extra day. It’s been fairly smooth.”

An early influx of horses to the stable area, which opened last week, has encouraged Harper.

“Usually, they dribble in,” he said. “We had 1,000 horses here instantaneously.”

Almost 2,000 horses will be on the grounds for the meeting, which offers the highest purse levels on the circuit. Last year, fields averaged 8.79 runners per race, the highest since the 1995 season, which had 9.01 runners per race. The 1995 figure could be challenged, with large fields expected for races on the widened turf course.

The sky’s the limit for 2-year-olds at SaratogaBy David Grening

Though Saratoga boasts a rich stakes schedule, it is the 2-year-old program that truly makes this 40-day meet special.

One never knows from where racing’s next star will emerge, but the confluence of top barns from New York and Kentucky make it likely that at least one 2-year-old of significance will emerge from Saratoga.

The winners of all three Triple Crown races in 2012 had run at the Spa the previ-ous summer. Last year saw the debuts of subsequent graded stakes winners Honor Code, Havana, Sweet Reason and Stop-chargingmaria.

In the last four summers, trainer Todd Pletcher has won 72 races for 2-year-olds at Saratoga, including 16 last year. Despite a limited number of opportunities, Pletcher won five 2-year-old maiden races held during the Belmont meet. Fashion Alert, winner of the Astoria Stakes as a first-time starter, will head a small field in Friday’s Grade 3 Schuylerville, and debut winner Nonna’s Boy runs in Saturday’s Grade 3 Sanford.

Pletcher’s plethora of maidens is led by Competitive Edge, a son of Pletcher’s 2010 Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver, whose first-crop progeny have been getting rave reviews. Competitive Edge has put in several strong works, including a 59.97-second move from the gate on Tuesday, easily besting stablemate Dada Maino, a son of Super Saver whose unraced dam is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Paynter.

“He’s trained exceptionally well, [I will] probably look to start him off at six furlongs,” Pletcher said of Competitive Edge. “Everything he’s done so far has been very professional; it has come very easy to him.”

Bully Proof, a son of Bellamy Road, is another who has impressed Pletcher in the morning.

“Pretty nice horse,” Pletcher said. “Competitive Edge has been just a little better than him in a couple of his works, but he’s been better than most everybody else.”

Other Pletcher 2-year-olds to look for at this meeting include Reality, second in his debut, Old Mountain Lane, Daredevil, Blame Jim, Malibu Warrior, Designed for War, and Catanova. Khozan, a half-brother

to multiple champion Royal Delta, is train-ing here, but Pletcher is not sure if he will make the meet.

On the fillies side, Pletcher entered the highly regarded Overspending for opening day, but the race overfilled and she wound up one deep on the also-eligible list. Other Pletcher fillies to look for include Curalina, Pointe Class, Tybalt’s Queen, and Sierra Olivia.

Chad Brown is usually competitive with 2-year-olds, especially on the turf. This year, he has a three-quarter brother to Tapit named Aldrin, who Brown said is close to making his debut.

“He’s a very nice prospect and is very close to running,” Brown said.

Brown has a pair of 2-year-olds for Ken and Sarah Ramsey, Chief Kitten and the filly Kitten’s Roar, who should run early in the meet.

Amazon King, Tracking Stock, and New York-breds Tiz Time to Shine and Startup Nation are Brown-trained colts to watch, while Tammy the Torpedo, Partisan Poli-tics, and Fila Primera are among the fillies Brown figures to unveil at the meet.

Nobody on the grounds will have better bred 2-year-olds than Kiaran McLaughlin, who has progeny out of about a dozen Grade 1-winning mares. The colt Ashland Park is out of 2013 Hall of Fame inductee Ashado and is working steadily, and could be ready to debut early in the meet. Asbaad is out of

Grade 1 winner Lear’s Princess. Both are sons of Street Cry.

Frosted is by Tapit out of Grade 2 winner Fast Cookie, who is a half-sister to 2008 champion juvenile male Midshipman.

Marking is out of multiple Grade 1 winner Seventh Street, while Mawthooq is by Distorted Humor out of multiple graded stakes winner Ready’s Gal. Kick Off is the second foal out of Grade 1 winner Game Face.

Among fillies, McLaughlin mentioned Gap Year, out of Ballerina Stakes winner Dubai Escapade, and Saifaana, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Alwajeeha, as two of his best.

Cavorting, whom McLaughlin sent out to a sharp debut win at Belmont, is pointed to the Grade 2 Adirondack Stakes on Aug. 10.

Trainer Shug McGaughey sent out Honor Code as his only winning juvenile from seven starters here last summer. He has several prospects to run this summer,

including Fire Away, a half-brother to Belmont Derby winner Mr Speaker; Command Control, a half-brother to Brooklyn Handicap winner Norumbega; and Next Gear, a half-brother to Grade 1 winner Data Link.

McGaughey has two million-dollar purchases: Gold Shield, a half-brother to Hopeful Stakes winner and good young sire Majestic Warrior, and an unnamed filly by Malibu Moon out of the mare Shop Again, making her a half-sister to the Grade 1 winner Power Broker.

Trainer Steve Asmussen won six juve-nile races at Churchill Downs and was to send out his most accomplished runner, Bashford Manor Stakes winner Cinco Charlie, in Saturday’s Sanford. Among Asmussen’s top prospects for this meet are Bold Conquest, an unraced son of Curlin; Revolver, second in his debut at Churchill; and Fly Friendly Sky, fourth in his debut.

Linda Rice has a large number of 2-year-olds, including Hot City Girl, a half-sister

to Rice’s Grade 2-winning filly La Verdad; an unnamed filly by Freud out of the dam All of Me; the colt Dangerous Cowboy, whose dam is a half-sister to Kentucky Oaks and Alabama Stakes winner Farda Amiga; and Charleston Pier.

Gary Contessa has won at least two juvenile races at each of the last five Sara-toga meets. He sends out the fast-working Aimone, a daughter of Lemon Drop Kid, in Friday’s second race. Contessa said that while he likes the filly, he doesn’t necessar-ily view her as ready to win first time out.

In the New York-bred ranks, Contessa is high on The Stone Ranger and False Positive, and expects Navy Blue to run better than he did when beaten 14 lengths in his debut. Drama Dream, a daughter of Bernardini, is one of his better open-company fillies.

Mike Hushion has some high-priced purchases for owner Barry Schwartz, led by Vinegar Joe. Schwartz’s homebred colt Scorecard Harry is out of Schuylerville

Broodmare of the Week: Sealy HillBy Nicole Russo

The dispersal of prominent owner-breeder Eugene Melnyk’s stock helped fuel strong figures at this week’s Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July sale. The dispersal especially helped power Fasig’s second annual summer selected horses of racing age section – with the stars including fillies Hillaby, Paradise Alley, and Belle Hill, who fetched a combined $1,070,000. All three fillies are out of 2007 Canadian Horse of the Year Sealy Hill, who Melnyk bred and raced.

Sealy Hill, a daughter of Point Given, won seven of 18 career starts and only missed the board four times over three seasons, earning $1,747,081. A stakes winner as a juvenile, the filly captured the Grade 3 Bourbonette Oaks in the spring of her 3-year-old season, and then was 12th in a deep edition of the Kentucky Oaks won by Rags to Riches. She rebounded to capture the Woodbine Oaks, the first leg of Cana-da’s filly Triple Crown, by 4 1/4 lengths.

Next, Sealy Hill crossed the line first in the Bison City Stakes, but was disqualified to third place after the stewards ruled she had lugged in and impeded a rival. She then captured the final leg of the Triple Crown, the Wonder Where Stakes. Melnyk and trainer Mark Casse appealed Sealy Hill’s disqualification in the Bison City and it was later overturned, making Sealy Hill the first filly Triple Crown winner.

Sealy Hill went on to finish second in a pair of graded stakes against older rivals that fall, locking up Sovereign Awards as Canada’s Horse of the Year, cham-

pion 3-year-old filly, and champion grass female. She did not win a stakes the follow-ing season, but did finish second, beaten less than a length, to champion Forever Together in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf, her career finale.

Sealy Hill is the dam of two winners from as many starters – Hillaby and Para-dise Alley. Hillaby, a 4-year-old Distorted

Humor filly, was lightly-raced early, start-ing once in 2012 and once in 2013. She is undefeated in 2014, winning a maiden special weight on Polytrack at Woodbine by 5 3/4 lengths on May 17, then following with a 3 1/4-length victory on the Wood-bine turf in a June 7 allowance. Never worse than third, she has bankrolled $91,892.

Hillaby sold for $500,000 to Stonestreet Stables at the Fasig-Tipton horses of racing age sale. She will remain in training with Casse to target stakes races before even-tually joining Stonestreet’s star-studded broodmare band.

Shortly after Hillaby sold, half-sister Paradise Alley, a 3-year-old by Flower Alley, followed her through the ring, sell-ing for $320,000 to Bridlewood Farm.

Paradise Alley has won two of four starts for earnings of $68,779. She is also undefeated this year, following her May 11 maiden victory with a score in an optional claiming race on June 14.

Belle Hill, Sealy Hill’s unraced 2-year-old by Sky Mesa, rounded out the trio, sell-ing to Aithon Stable for $250,000.

Sealy Hill was herself offered by Melnyk at the 2013 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky winter mixed sale as the owner began to pare down his breeding stock. The mare, with a newborn Distorted Humor filly at foot, sold for $590,000 to newcomer Nat Rea’s Regis Farm. She produced a Giant’s Causeway filly for Rea this year.

Sealy Hill is the only winner out of the stakes-winning Boston Harbor mare Boston Twist, and is the most accom-plished runner from her extended family.

Best Beyers: English ChannelBy DRF Breeding staff

Lane’s End sire English Channel had a breakthrough year of sorts in 2013 when horses such as Optimizer, Blueskiesnrain-bows, Skyring, and Potomac River won graded stakes. Ultra-consistent Illinois-bred The Pizza Man stacked up well with that group to post the co-second high-est Beyer Speed Figure among English Channel’s progeny last year. The gelding currently owns top honors in that category for 2014, earning a 98 for his game half-length win in the Grade 3 Stars and Stripes Stakes at Arlington Park last Saturday.

That victory was The Pizza Man’s first graded score in four very impressive seasons of racing. Overall, the Midwest Thoroughbreds homebred has won 11 of 16 starts and earned $499,803. He has four other stakes wins on his résumé, and has tallied seven of his 11 wins over Arling-ton’s turf course. The Pizza Man reached the triple-digit Beyer mark last year when earning a 100 for a win in the Robert E. Carey Memorial Handicap at Hawthorne. He is out of the stakes-placed Illinois-bred Lear Fan mare I Can Fan Fan, and his second dam, Illinois-bred Flower’s Circle, by Lieutenant’s Lark, won two stakes on the Arlington lawn.

Three English Channel horses have posted 97 Beyers this year – Star Chan-nel, Skyring, and O’ Prado Ole. Star Chan-nel, a 5-year-old ridgling out of the Grade 3-winning Cozzene mare Reach the Top, tallied his 98 when winning the Florida Sunshine Millions Turf Stakes at 1 1/8 miles at Gulfstream Park back in January. Skyring, a 5-year-old Brad Kelley home-bred out of the Seattle Slew mare Violet Lady, picked up his year-best figure in his second career Grade 2 score, a neck win in the about 1 1/8-mile Mervin H. Muniz Jr. Handicap at Fair Grounds. A one-dimen-sional type, Skyring has posted each of his five career wins from on or very close to the lead.

O’Prado Ole earned his 97 in the Grade 3 Stars and Stripes when he fell a half-length short of The Pizza Man, filling out an English Channel exacta. The 4-year-old, who is still in search of his first stakes win, was bred by Kelley’s Bluegrass Hall and is owned by Jerry Crawford’s Donegal

Racing. O’ Prado Ole’s name humorously recalls both his dam – stakes winner and Grade 3-placed Mexican Moonlight – and her sire, El Prado.

Among English Channel’s progeny, The Pizza Man’s 100 Beyer in the Robert Carey last year trailed only Optimizer’s 102 earned for a runner-up finish to Point of Entry in the Grade 1 Manhattan Handi-cap at Belmont. It also tied Optimizer’s figure recorded in a two-length win in the Grade 3 Col. E.R. Bradley Handicap at Fair Grounds. Optimizer has won five of 30 starts in a very active four-year campaign, making 14 starts at 3 and nine starts at 4. So far this year, the veteran’s form has tailed off severely, but he remains in training for Brad Kelley and D. Wayne Lukas, posting a four-furlong breeze on July 8. Optimizer, who has earned over $917,000, is out of the winning A.P. Indy mare Indy Pick, who is in turn a half-sister to Grade 1 winner and sire Finder’s Fee, both out of Grade 1 winner Fantastic Find, by Mr. Prospector.

English Channel’s best dirt runner to date, Blueskiesnrainbows, tallied three 99 Beyers last year, two of them coming in stakes races. This year, the Virginia-bred earned a 94 for his win in the Grade

2, 1 1/16-mile San Pasqual Stakes at Santa Anita on Jan. 11. Blueskiesnrainbows has won a graded stakes each year from 2012-2014, taking the Grade 2 Swaps at 3 (career-best 103 Beyer) and the Grade 3 Native Diver last year at 4 (92 Beyer). Owned by Bad Boy Racing and Whizway Farms, he is in training in California with Jerry Hollendorfer. The 5-year-old horse is out of the Deputy Minister mare Cho Cho San, who has also produced stakes winner Cho Cho Cat.

One common denominator among English Channel’s best runners is that they have not been precocious and have instead developed into stakes winners over time. In that respect, they have emulated their sire, a son of Smart Strike out of the unraced Theatrical mare Belva, who is a full sister to Grade 1 winner Pharma and Grade 2 winner Hap, out of English and French champion Committed. Well-bred for grass racing, English Channel raced only once as a juvenile for owner James Scatuorchio and trainer Todd Pletcher but matured into one of the best American turf horses of the 2000s during his 3-, 4-, and 5-year-old seasons.

By the time English Channel retired in

fall 2007, he had won 13 of 23 starts and 10 stakes – six of them Grade 1s – for earnings of over $5.3 million. He reached the triple-digit Beyer mark 15 times, a remarkable achievement for a turf horse. His last race was his best, an overpowering, course-record setting, seven-length win in the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Monmouth Park. English Channel earned a career-high 111 Beyer for that effort, and received the Eclipse Award in 2007 as champion turf

male. His race record made English Channel

an attractive stud prospect, and he began his career at Hurricane Hall in Kentucky before relocating to stand at Will Farish’s Lane’s End alongside his sire, 2007 and 2008 progeny earnings leader Smart Strike. His fee has remained unchanged at $25,000 through seven seasons at stud.

Several of the above mentioned horses will likely keep English Channel in the

headlines during the late summer and into the fall – and, aside from The Pizza Man, a horse to keep an eye on is the 5-year-old mare Parranda. Parranda earned a career-best 95 Beyer for her win in the Grade 3 Wilshire Stakes at Santa Anita in April and has already captured four stakes this year. The turf specialist is out of the winning Rahy mare Dynamic Feature, who is a half-sister to Canadian champion Sisterly Love.

Hovdey: Heap hoping to get Del Mar off on a good footHow tough is it to get pumped for Del

Mar? Not very. Just find a place to stand in the sun, close your eyes, and wait for a cool breeze to blow in from the coast. Any coast. Then imagine the sound of Trevor Denman, the aroma of fresh kettle corn, and the taste of an overpriced Delmar-garita. See? You’re already there.

If a racing fan can’t enjoy Del Mar, there is no hope for the poor schmo. He might as well play jai alai. Of all the benign locales where major Thoroughbred racing is conducted, none is more benigner than Del Mar. The good news is that 36 days of sport begins there Thursday. End of commercial.

The hard part is always between the rails, where horses and jockeys lay their lives on the line for the pleasure of the assembled sun-drenched multi-tude. On opening day five years ago, defending local champ Rafael Bejarano got as far as the top of the stretch in the third race before his mount broke a leg and fell. A trailing horse kicked Bejar-ano in the face, resulting in fractures that required six hours of surgery and 10 titanium plates to repair. He returned to riding in 37 days.

Bejarano was hurt again last May, this time fracturing a collarbone and a rib. Healthy ribs and clavicles are pretty much a necessity for effective horsebacking, which is why it took almost two months for Bejarano to get a doctor’s okay to get back in the saddle. In Thursday’s first race, a one-mile event with the gate right in front of the crowd, that will be Rafael Bejarano aboard the No. 10 horse, Fit to Rule, answering starter’s orders for

the first time since May. Give the man a hand.

It must be part of the deal because the sentiment is not reserved for jock-eys alone. Anyone who throws a leg over a horse at a racetrack every day places himself in harm’s way.

Just ask Blake Heap, 57, who was for many years the best friend a horse and rider could have as one of the outrid-ers patrolling the track both morning and afternoon. Heap also trained a small string and was getting his share of attention handling the California-based runners of the growing Wesley Ward stable.

Then one morning at Santa Anita – Jan. 30, 2011, to be exact – Heap went after a loose horse running wild on a crowded main track. Just as he got hold of the dangling reins, his pony collided with the loose horse and fell, and in the ensuing pileup, Heap suffered a catalog of injuries that ran from his face to his ankle. There were 17 fractures in all, and a reconstructed shoulder in the bargain, all part of the job of trying to keep others from a similar fate.

Three and a half years later, the memories of the accident are as vivid as the lingering twinges of pain.

“I’m doing okay,” the ever-positive Heap said this week at his Del Mar barn in the far western reaches of the backstretch. “I mean, I’ll never feel the same. But you can’t lay around. You’ve got to get up and keep going.”

There is nothing like a fast, young horse to get a man up and keep him going, which is why Heap floats when-ever he’s around the 2-year-old filly Lost Bus, a California-bred daughter of Bring the Heat (by In Excess) who races for her breeders, Ward and John R. Haagsma.

Lost Bus has raced only once, and only then at 4 1/2 furlongs. But as they

say, it was the way she did it that has Heap and her people anxious to see more.

They will get their chance Friday, when Lost Bus runs in the $100,000 California Thoroughbred Breeders Association Stakes at 5 1/2 furlongs, with Victor Espinoza on board. Right now, though, Lost Bus – a tall, dark bay with three socks, a blaze, and an old scrape on her knee from a youthful encounter with a fence – was getting a bath after a gallop.

“Leading her over before her race, I heard someone say, ‘How are those itty-bitty horses gonna run with this thing?’ ” Heap said with a grin.

Size matters, especially with 2-year-olds, when those ahead of the growth curve have a natural advantage. If they can combine size with a smooth and easy way of going, like Lost Bus, the sky could be the limit.

Heap’s bar is pretty high when it comes to quality on the hoof. He came out of Arizona in the mid-1980s with a gelding named Zany Tactics, a son of the turf stayer Zanthe who had his way with Del Mar’s sprinters during the summer of 1986, then set a world record for six furlongs the following year.

“That summer is when I met Char-lie Whittingham,” Heap said. “I didn’t dare talk to him or approach him. Zany beat Charlie’s horse Bolder Than Bold in the Turf Express at Hollywood and then the Crosby and the O’Brien down here. One morning, I was walk-ing him around the barn when Charlie comes up.

‘Hey, son,’ he says, ‘could you bring that horse over here so I can see his face. I’m tired of looking at his ass.’

“I don’t know if this filly could turn out to be another Zany Tactics,” Heap added. “Not many like him. But it’s going to be fun finding out.”
