Program OverviewThe University of Campinas (Unicamp) is a public university funded by the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The university was officially established on October 5, 1966. Although considered a young institution, Unicamp has already developed a strong tradition in education, research and services to society. Unicamp has strong undergraduate and graduate programs covering a wide range of areas in science, technology, health, humanities, and arts.

AcademicsStudents accepted into the UNCW exchange/study abroad program at Unicamp will receive credit toward their degree requirements for most majors. However, please note that all undergraduate courses are taught in Portuguese (with very few graduate classes offered in English). Areas of study available include art, biology, chemistry, film, geography, geology, history, literature, mathematics/statistics, philosophy and religion, photography, physics, Portuguese for foreigners, and Urban Studies. The following academic areas have a few restrictions: medicine, music, art, and sports courses, please meet with an advisor at the Office of International Programs for details.

Program CostFederal and state financial aid may be applied toward this program. Even if you are normally ineligible for financial aid, you should submit a financial aid application (FAFSA). You may find that you are eligible for additional funding.

Financial Aid & Scholarships

Unicamp’s main campus is located 16km from downtown Campinas, in a city district named Barão Geraldo. Originally named for its meadows, Campinas was founded in 1774 and is today an important and growing educational, industrial and financial center with over one million inhabitants. Campinas has a rich cultural life. The city has its own Symphony Orchestra – considered one of Brazil’s best – cinemas, theatres, parks, malls and regional and international restaurants. There are also many “barzinhos”, where people often meet to hear great music. Campinas is also the home of two popular soccer teams: Guarani and Ponte Preta. Recreation in the vicinity of Campinas is rich and varied. São Paulo, one of the world’s largest cities and an important cultural center, is located 100 kilometers southeast of Campinas – a one-hour ride by car or bus. In addition, many country resorts and parks are accessible, offering a taste of life in the countryside of Brazil. Finally, the famous São Paulo beaches of the coast are only a two-hour drive away. Since Campinas is served by a good transportation network, with bus service being the most common form of transportation, it is easy to get from place to place. The Viracopos International Airport is also located within 30 minutes from Campus.

The university does not provide university dorms for Exchange Students, but the international office can assist the student finding a shared room near the campus.

Housing

Unicamp has three reasonably priced cafeterias on the main campus and almost every school on campus has a snack bar or a restaurant. Additional meal options are located within walking distance of campus. Students have acces to Unicamp’s sports facilities, including the running track, at any time of the day or can exercise at the Parque Ecológico, a lake next to the campus. Cultural activities happen every day on campus, and many of them occur at the Casa do Lago, a cultural space that offers daily movie showtimes, musical performances, art exhibitions, among others. The International Unicamp Volunteer Group, UniInter, is a student group engaged in the dissemination of a variety of international cultures on campus and support for international students.

This program is available as: • Exchange – This means you pay your

regular tuition and fees to UNCW, and your room and board costs abroad.

• Study Abroad – This means you pay host university tuition and fees directly to UFMG. You will pay room and board costs abroad as well.

With each option, there will be additional costs for international airfare, passport, health insurance, local transportation, visa, and a possible exit tax. Please meet with an advisor at the Office of International Programs to discuss which option is best for you.
