I recognize the tentativenessand worry in the callers voice. Iveheard it a thousand times. Imworried about my son, the callersays to me.

She goes on to describe hissymptoms and the reason for herconcern. The cause of her tone,at least in part, is the hauntingquestion - Should I be worriedabout my child? Parents are oftenunsure when a problem is seriousenough to seek professional help.Presented below are four questionsthat I ask myself when trying todetermine whether or not a childneeds professional help.

My first point of concern withany mental health issue is onesability to function. I ask the ques-tion, How much does the thing

that is concerning the parentinhibit the childs ability to dothe things he needs and wants todo? If the answer is minimallyor not at all, then the problemmay not warrant professional help.Suppose you are afraid of snakes ophidiophobia or technicallySpecific Phobia animal sub-type. This phobia is classifiableas a mental health disorder, butso what. If you can get out of bed,go to work, do your family busi-ness, sleep OK and eat OK, then sowhat if you have a diagnosis? Withchildren, Im most concerned whentheir issues are creating noticeableproblems with siblings, parents, teachers, or peers, or in specific en-vironments (home, school, church,

The configuration of a persons hearing on an audiogram (a graph used torepresent the level of loudness at which an individual can hear sounds of differentfrequencies) reflects where hearing loss occurs across the normal range offrequencies. In some cases, hearing loss occurs in a recognizable shape. For instance,a saucer-shaped hearing loss, characterized by a slightly curved slope on theaudiogram, indicates hearing that is better on the lower and higher ends of thefrequency range than in the middle. A precipitous hearing loss (resembling a skislope) shows hearing to be near normal at the lower frequencies, but falls offdramatically beginning at the midrange frequencies. This information isfundamental to programming a hearing instrument.

Your ability to hear is as unique as your fingerprints. Noisy environments, age, heredity, medical conditions, and childhood and adult illnesses can combine toproduce different types of hearing losses in different people. When you need help

with your hearing, we hope youll turn to the services of an audiologist at FAYETTE

HEARING CLINIC, the hearing specialist most qualified to offer complete hearinghealthcare services. Well find the hearing instrument best suited to your hearingabilities. Call us at 770-631-4490 to arrange a comprehensive hearing test at 100Genevieve Court, in the Family Medicine Specialists Bldg., east of the dive shop.

P.S. With age, hearing loss often first occurs in the higher frequencies and thengradually spreads to the lower frequencies.

Many people are not awarethat headaches may be causedby nerve irritation or pressurein the upper cervical spine(neck), called Atlas Neuro-Vascular Syndrome.

Dr. Jeffry Finnigan, the au-thor of Life BEYOND Head-aches, has been treatingpatients with headaches forover 20 years. He relates,

Paraphrased Dorlands Medi-cal Dictionary tells us thatHEALTH is a state of whole-ness, in which all of the partsfunction at 100%, all the time. This is not the way we havebeen taught to think abouthealth today, in a society where absence or elimina-tion of symptoms is our fo-cus The concept of gettingones nerve system opened upthrough specific spinal adjust-ment, allowing the body partsto work more harmoniouslyadvancing ones wellness, has

Headaches and spinal healthlong been the central theme inChiropractic.

A concern people often have isthat they may have a personalitythat produces headaches. Onemight feel they over-react tosituations during the day causingstress headaches. Headachesare not caused by your mind, yourstress level or your diet. However, these factors can look like they are

the very cause, simply becausethey are actually the triggers forheadaches in most peoplethoseevents will trigger headaches, but they are not the causeI would agree that personality, stress, hormones and other fac-tors definitely play a contributingroll in the continual productionof this frustrating condition. But

clinical evidence demonstratesthat these factors do not causeheadaches.

The Atlas Orthogonal is agentle effective Chiropractic tech-nique used to restore function tothe upper cervical spine, wherethe Atlas (C-1) misalignment cancause nerve interference (calledsubluxation). This is where AtlasNeuro-Vascular Syndrome origi-

    nates.Dr. Finnigans book, Life BE-

Peachtree City parent, JamieDecesares experience with BrainBalance is just one of many ex-amples that support this.

Our child was a typical Autisticchild before Brain Balance. Wespent five years doing every pos-sible thing out there to help her.Brain Balanced helped her faster

than all the things we did in fiveyears. She is now doing all thethings we never thought shedbe able to do. She is a joy to bearound. The guilt as a parent isgone.

My son has lost his symptoms ofAutism, ADD/ADHD, Tourettes, and his Autoimmune Neuro-logical Disorder, says NatalieStubbs, another Peachtree Cityparent. Prior to coming to BrainBalance, we tried occupationaltherapy, speech therapy, physi-cal therapy, nutritional therapy, social skills training, behaviormodification and the protocolsof Defeat Autism Now! Sincestarting with Brain Balance, myson has had profound improve-ments in his social, academicand physical abilities. No moretantrums, meltdowns, outburstsor aggression. Our family life islike a normal, typical family.

Dr. Robert Melillo, founderof the Brain Balance program, describes what makes BrainBalance so different than otherprograms,

The problem with most exist-ing programs is that they workon strengthening the strongerhemisphere of the brain at theexpense of the weaker side. As aresult, the hemispheres continueto become more imbalancedresulting in Functional Discon-nection Syndrome.

Many of the symptoms associ-ated with various neurobehavior-

al disorders of childhood are theresult of Functional Disconnec-tion Syndrome. This syndromerefers to the condition where thetwo halves of the brain - the rightand left hemispheres - are notcommunicating with each othernormally. The normal develop-ment and flow of communicationacross the brain is disrupted.

    In addition, typically one half

of the brain is significantly slowerthan the other, so it can notcompare and share informationaccurately with the other half ofthe brain. The stronger side of thebrain must take over and startsto ignore or not connect with theweaker side of the brain.

Dr. Scire explains, When weare primarily only using one sideof our brain, our interpretation

and reactions to the world will beoff and our behavior will be ab-normal. This reduced connectionbetween the two sides of the brainproduces disconnected children. They are disconnected from theirown bodies and from their senses. They are also socially and emo-tionally disconnected. The goalof the Brain Balance AchievementProgram is to correct the commu-nication breakdown between thetwo hemispheres of the brain. Itis this fundamental brain imbal-ance that results in the range ofnegative symptoms and behav-iors exhibited by children.

The Brain Balance programis the only program designed toassess, document and objectivelyquantify Functional Disconnec-tion Syndrome through the useof extensive testing in all areasof function, followed by indi-vidualized programs to improvefunctions. Brain Balance utilizestheir proprietary model to first as-sess a childs functioning in 1200parameters that fall within threeareas: 1) sensorimotor, 2) neuro-academic and 3) bio-nutritional.They then meet with the parentsand provide them with an easy tofollow, comprehensive report thatnot only explains which functionsof the brain are weak and strong, but also rates that functioningon five achievement levels andreports which hemisphere of thebrain needs to be stimulated inorder to raise that functioning.

Brain Balance works to putskids back in sync with an inte-grated program that does not relyon drugs, medical procedures orpsychotherapy.

Since balance is the essenceof our program, we also ensurethat each child progresses in asymmetrical way, Dr. Scire says. That is why each achievementlevel is further segmented into

right and left hemispheres. Thisis where our program delivers anincredible level of individuality. No two children are identical andno two Brain Balance programsare identical. Parents tell us thatafter reading reports from somany different doctors, teachersand other specialists, the BrainBalance report finally put all thepieces together for them in a way

that made sense and illuminatedthe true source of their childsproblem. Parents are able toclearly see and understand theareas of brain imbalance andthe opportunities for functionalimprovements.

Special Education TeacherMandy Gunter was so impressedby the progress that one of herstudents made in the Brain Bal-ance program that she left herjob with Fayette County PublicSchools to work at Brain Balance. She had a student in her class whowas having on average five out-bursts a day in the classroom. Hisbehavior quickly became morecontrolled when he participatedin the Brain Balance program.

I have seen more progress with this student in just a fewweeks of his attendance at BrainBalance than in the three yearsI worked with him in the schoolsystem. In the school system, Ialways targeted goals that I knewI could accomplish, which wereall, coincidentally, left brain goals, but these goals ignored criticalelements of life, Mandy said. When we began stimulating theright side of his brain, we began tosee rapid improvements.

Brain Balance will open a cen-ter in Suwanee this fall in supportof their mission to make the BrainBalance program available to asmany children as possible, sothat each child may reach theirgreatest physical, mental, social

and academic potential. To learn more about the BrainBalance program, parents canattend free educational talks atBrain Balance in Peachtree Citylocated at 357 Highway 74 North. To reserve a space or learn morecall 770-631-3033 and visit www.brainbalancecenters.com/at-lanta.

    Balance Continued fromB1

    By DR. ROBERT MELILLOChiropractic neurologist

We are witnessing the epi-demic rise in the diagnosis of

ADHD, Autism, Aspergers andother learning disorders. The firstquestion parents ask is Why?Why have we seen and continueto see such a large increase inchildhood disabilities over thepast two decades?

Most parents are told that theseare genetic disorders hardwiredin the brain that cause chemicalimbalances in the brain that cannot be corrected. Others attributethe increase to vaccinations andmedications designed to actuallytreat the symptoms.

These reasons alone can notexplain the meteoric rise in neu-robehavioral disorders. No onecan say with certainty the reason why more and more childrenand their families are suffering

with these disorders. What wecan conclude is that current ap-proaches used over the past twodecades are not working.

The more pressing questionnow, is What? What can bedone to make long term correc-tions rather than just treating thesymptoms of these disorders?

The new model that seekscorrection rather than symptomrelief begins with research show-ing that Autism, ADHD and otherneurological disorders involvethe same areas of the brain andmay be caused by Functional

Disconnection Syndrome. Thisis a scientific term that meansthat the two halves of the brainare not balanced and thus arenot communicating with each

other normally. Each half of thebrain contributes differently toour understanding of and ourreactions to the world we live in.Therefore, when brain activity inunbalanced, information is pro-cessed improperly, resulting inacademic, behavioral and socialproblems. For a child or adult tofully understand the world andreact to it appropriately, we mustuse our whole brain.

The key to correcting Func-tional Disconnection Syndromeis a hemispheric based programto balance the two halves of thebrain. Brain Balance is the onlyprogram currently available inthe country that corrects Func-tional Disconnection Syndrome with a Hemispheric Integration

program that stimulates the weakhemisphere of the brain and thenintegrates it with the strong hemi-sphere, so the child can utilize thewhole brain.

Dr. Robert J. Melillo, an inter-nationally known chiropracticneurologist, has been in privatepractice for 17 years. For mostof that time, he has been a post-graduate professor of neurologyand rehabilitation. Dr. Melillohas devoted the later half of hiscareer to the study of learning dis-abilities and behavioral disordersin both children and adults.
