ELIGIBILITY NORMS

Most institutes allow students only with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (PCB) to appear for entrance tests.

Premier institution in Pharmacy education like University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Panjab University provides admission to stu-dents with meritorious performance in PU CET (Punjab University Common entrance Test).

Delhi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research (DIPSR) admits students with a mini-mum aggregate of 60% in PCB in 10+2 eligible for admission to B. Pharm course through a merit based cut-off list.

To get admission to B. Pharm course at Jamia Hamdard University, the candidate must have passed 10+2 with at least 50% aggregate marks in PCB and qualified NEET-UG (National Eli-gibility cum Entrance Test) conducted by CBSE.

THE MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY IS 10+2 WITH PCB. CUT-OFFS VARY FROM 50 TO 60 PERCENT

Lovely Professional University allows students from both PCM as well as PCM streams (PCB/M) to appear for their qualifying examination for dual degree programme. Students passing with PCM/B combination in 10+2 are largely accepted for B.Pharm degree courses across universities including Manipal University.

In Annamalai University, candidates who have not studied Biology or Mathematics will have to undergo a programme in Introductory Biology or Introductory Mathematics along with B.Pharm subjects in the first year.

Before you enter this field, remember that besides state entrances, some institutions conduct their own entrance exams in order to pursue B.Pharm courses.

Selecting the Right InstituteIt can be a daunting task for both parents and aspiring students to select an institute of repute for education in Pharmacy. The reputation of the institute is built on its standards of research and academic excellence. Following are some of the pointers, which may help in selecting the right institute:

1. Recognition of the university: It is imperative for an institute to be recog-nised by regulatory bodies like, All India Council for Technical Education and Pharmacy Council of India for conducting B. Pharm degree courses. You an also select institutes which have been accredited by national and international agencies like National Board of Accreditation (NBA), National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), ISO certifica-tion as stringent requirements have to be met for such accreditation.

2. Excellence of faculty/teaching staff: The expertise of faculty depends on their research and teaching experience. The teaching as well as non-teaching staff should be well trained to answer the queries of students and

support them in their coursework. Having Adjunct professors, industry experts and other eminent teachers are signs of superior institutes.

3. Infrastructure: The availability of adequate laboratory set-ups, seminar halls and well-equipped library is a pre-requisite for conducting a course in the challenging field of pharmacy. The other requirements include a herbal/botanical garden within the campus.

4. Placements: The employability of fresh graduates gives credence to the academic achievements of the institute. The graduates from reputed institutes are most sought after for opportunities in industries, research and academic positions. Professional profiles of alumni may help to vali-date institutional claims.

5. International and industrial collaborations: This can be gauged from the involvement of faculty members as consultants or industry experts. The institute’s collaboration with foreign institutes reflects its industrial exposure and research capabilities in the discipline.

Course StructureThe course is spread across eight semesters. In the first semester the basics of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacognosy and Mathematics are studied. In the second year the students are trained in the principles of Pharmaceu-tical Microbiology and Immunology, Pharmaceutical Biochemistry. An understanding of Pharmaceutical Business Management is provided in the third year alongside a project work. In depth knowledge in Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Analysis is imparted as a special focus in the final year.

During the undergraduate course, a student not only learns the scientific concepts but also laboratory skills and attitude to exchange the knowledge between a physician and a patient.

WHAT AFTER GRADUATION?

There is a tremendous scope for research and higher studies in pharmacy. M. Pharm degree courses are offered by top-

ranked institutes in the country like, NIPER, Mohali. The admission to postgraduate pro-gramme is through Graduate Pharmaceutical Aptitude Test (GPAT).

Pharmacy education is set to undergo a sea change in the next few years. The introduction of Pharm D., a six-year integrated postgraduate programme, is expected to take pharmacy educa-tion to international levels. Pharm D., is expected to provide plenty of opportunities to Indian stu-dents to practise pharmacy abroad.

The 6-year course provides intensive train-ing in pharmacy practice and clinical pharmacy services. It will include five years of clinical and community-based theory with ward rounds and

YOU CAN TAKE UP MASTER’S STUDIES AFTER GRADUATION AND PUR-SUE RESEARCH AFTER THAT OR GO FOR PRODUCT RESEARCH.

one-year internship in hospitals. Students will work in coordination with doctors to treat patients. In the final year, the students will come out as clinical pharmacists, an essential component of healthcare, equal to doctors. Graduates will study in detail about drugs for different diseases. Pharma-cists will advise patients about dose, action and side effects, while B.Pharm deals with different drug sources, synthesising drugs, formulations, analysis, regulations, pharmacological actions, dosage and toxicology. According to Dr. T.K. Ravi, Principal, College of Pharmacy, Sri Ramakrishna Institute of Paramedical Sciences, Coimbatore, this is recognized internationally, open-ing up more opportunities for people entering the field.

A career in the field of pharmaceutical education combines teaching with research and sometimes, administrative activities. Though the posts require M.Phar/PhD degree, it is not difficult as the government and pharmaceutical industry support PG and research students through scholarships and fellow-ships. A PhD in pharmacy is also offered by some institutions and usually requires a minimum of three years to complete after an M.Pharm.

There are several research opportunities for fresh graduates as research fellows with research institutions like, DIPSR, NIPER, Tata Memorial Hospital, etc.

Research in drug development is another exciting area. In India many phar-maceutical industries like Dr. Reddy’s, Ranbaxy, Cadilla, Glenmark, Cipla, Aurobindo, Hetro have excellent divisions in R&D.

JOB PROSPECTS

In the last few years, there has been a revolu-tionary growth in every area of the pharma field. With the increasing number of life-

saving drugs and new methods and techniques of manufacturing and analysis of drugs, the respon-sibility of pharmacists has increased consider-ably. According to Pharmacy Council of India, “India Pharma Industry is ranked fourth and thirteenth in value in the global pharmaceutical market”.

Hospital Pharmacy and Community Pharmacy are emerging in India, which involve planning, procuring, dispensing drugs apart from patient counselling. Dr. Elango, Principal, JSS, Ooty says, “In a way, pharmacy is coming full circle, and we’re seeing it lean more towards direct patient care. As the population grows and ages, people are taking more prescriptions, and there is more demand for pharmacists to have hands-on

THERE ARE PLENTY OF CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY. EMERGING SECTORS OPEN UP NEW AVENUES.

time with patients. More advanced-practice pharmacists are specialising and going around with physicians and other healthcare providers in hospitals as part of a healthcare team. That’s a win-win situation for patients. State and Central Governments appoint Drugs Inspectors to implement the Drugs and Cosmetics Act. A pharmacy graduate alone is eligible for this post and they are the only regulators in the field of Drugs Control Administration.

A B.Pharm graduate is well equipped to participate in healthcare pro-grammes run by public and private sectors. Several national healthcare programs like, National AIDS Control Programme recruit fresh graduates. Apart from state and primary health centre pharmacists are employed in the Railways, Air India, Coal India, CGHS, Defence services, ESIS, etc.

To be eligible for the position of a pharmacist at various government insti-tutions, the recipient of B. Pharm degree should also be registered as Phar-macist under the Pharmacy Act 1948. A degree in Pharmacy also makes you eligible to start your own business. Pharmaceutical industry is a fast growing one. Government-sponsored industries are engaged in manufacture of live-saving drugs while manufacture of a major portion of bulk drugs and formula-tions is in the private sector. Here a young and enthusiastic pharmacist can make a mark with his entrepreneurial skills.

There are opportunities for pharmacy graduates in marketing and phar-maceutical journalism as well. They can serve as technical advisors or con-sultants for project-funding agencies to banks, financial institutions etc. By becoming a manufacturing chemist, a pharmacist can rise from the position of production supervisor to production manager and vice president.Leading private sector companies recruit young graduates for roles in marketing, research and quality control. Some of the renowned names include multi-national companies such as Novartis, Cadila Pharmaceuticals, GlaxoSmith-Kline Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

Freshers with B.Pharm are also taken as trainees where the average salary is about Rs.10,000 to Rs.15,000. But this is just the beginning, after one year of experience professionals can draw higher salaries. It is a field that encour-ages usage of creative ideas, is very challenging and the B.Pharm course helps a student zero in on specializations of various kinds. Some of the upcoming fields include quality control departments, formulation development, regula-tory affairs, clinical research and patient-oriented pharmacy practice.

Those with Pharm D., qualification can pursue careers in various fields, including institutional practice; community pharmacy practice; managed care; drug information and long-term care; consultant’s role; clinical liaisons with pharmaceutical industry; patient education; and clinical trial research.

How to Become SuccessfulTo become a successful in this field a deep interest in science is necessary. Chemistry and Biology are two subjects that need to be on your tips, along with an understanding of interlinks between these subjects and a clear understanding of the effects of drugs and their composition. Strong analytical abilities and academic foundations are necessary, along with hard work. As part of the job, you would require good communication skills to interact with patients, physicians etc.

The growth in science and technology, improved understanding of dis-eases, their causes and possible remedies, have made Pharmacy a field full of potential and challenges. Prof. H.G. Shivakumar, Head of JSS College of Pharmacy, Mysore sums it up. “People are becoming more aware of the role of pharmacists, and do not treat them just as people who give you medicines at a chemist shop. Pharmacy has everything to do with drugs - right from their origin, preparation, effects and side effects, dispensing and laws concerning medicines.” In a nutshell, pharmacy assures a bright and prosperous future.
