Challenging all students to meet their full potential

BOYER VALLEY COMMUNITY SCHOOLSDISTRICT NEWSLETTER

The School Year is Off and Running We have completed the first half of quarter one already. Time

sure does fly when we are having fun. Students and staff have been working hard in and out of the classroom. One very impor-tant thing occurs every October is completing certified enroll-ment. The certified enrollment number drives the funding that is received from the state. Currently, we believe our enrollment will be down eighteen students compared to last year. October 22 & 23 are Parent-Teacher Conferences from 4-8:00pm. I encourage all parents to come and visit with their children’s instructor and check out our great learning environment. I would like to thank the Booster Club and all members of the booster club for their support financially and all their volunteer work to raise money to provide our students with good facilities and equipment.

We will be conducting our NWEA assessments during the week of October 8th. NWEA assessments are used as a second assessment with which to compare our Iowa Assessment results. Both assessments are important to gauge students’ progress.

Boyer Valley Schools Celebrate National School Lunch Week“Lots 2 Love” during #NSLW18

October 2018 – To recognize the National School Lunch Pro-gram and the 30 million children it serves every day, Boyer Valley schools will recognize National School Lunch Week from October 15-19, 2018. The theme, “Lots 2 Love,” encourages students and school nutrition professionals across the country to share what they love most about school lunch programs.

National School Lunch Week will emphasize the healthy foods that are offered daily at Boyer Valley schools. To help celebrate this week the school will have guest servers, coloring contest and drawings.

“School lunches are healthier than ever, with more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and less fat and sodium,” said Bonnie Melby, Boyer Valley’s Food Manager. “National School Lunch Week helps us educate parents and students about all the ben-efits of our lunch program, and the appealing choices we offer.”

Check out our menu’s on the school webpage or elsewhere in this newsletter to see the healthy foods we provide. The Boyer Valley’s Wellnes Policy, which can also be found on our website, emphasizes the importance of a healthy life style, and shows what Boyer Valley Community Schools is doing to teach this to our staff and students.

The federally-funded National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides nutritionally balanced, healthy meals to students every day. The program, which has been serving the nation’s children for more than 70 years, requires school meals to meet federal nu-trition standards like offering fruits and vegetables every day, serv-ing whole grain-rich foods, and limiting fat, calories, and sodium.

The “Lots 2 Love” campaign is made possible by the nonprofit School Nutrition Association.

Hope Begins With YouThe Boyer Valley Science Club will be hosting

their fall annual Red Cross Blood Drive. Donating blood is an easy way to help others and only takes about an hour. Besides maintaining an adequate blood supply for patients in need , the more donors to our blood drive helps some of our graduating seniors earn scholarships toward college. The drive will be held on Wednesday October 18, 2017 from 8:30 am to 1:30pm at the Boyer Valley High School Gym. To schedule an appointment call 712-643-2258 and talk to Stacy Pippitt

ConferencesFirst quarter conferences will be held on Monday, October 22,

and Tuesday, October 13. Conference times will be 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM. Elementary teachers will meet to schedule conferences and try to coordinate times with all of the students in your family. There will be no school on Friday, October 26.

Student AbsencesWhen your child is absent from school, please be sure to call

the school and let us know the nature of the absence. Hollie will call you if you happen to forget, but it is more efficient if you can call the school rather than having Hollie call several numbers to get the information we need. If you can call before 8:30 AM, it will provide more time for your child’s teachers to get the necessary work together for the day. Feel free to leave a message on Hol-lie’s voice mail if you call before 7:45 AM. If you know your child is going to be absent from school the next day, you can leave a message on Hollie’s voice mail the night before the absence. Along those same lines, if you should encounter a change in ad-dress, phone number, or employment, please call the school so we can update our emergency contact information.

Family EmergenciesFamilies often encounter emergencies or problems that can

interfere with the continuity of the family’s schedule or structure. This can often lead to difficulties at school for the students in those families. Please feel free to share such emergencies or problems with your child’s teachers. This may help answer ques-tions about problems your child’s teacher may be seeing in your child at school. You don’t have to share all of the details concern-ing the situation, but if we know there is some circumstance at home that might be weighing heavily on the mind of your child we can make necessary accommodations at school.

Child CustodyDivorce and the impending custody issues can be a difficult

situation. In many cases mothers and fathers are granted equal rights where their children are concerned. In other cases one parent may be given custodial rights. In the latter case, a non-custodial parent may request copies of report cards, newsletters,

and other information. This request should be made in writing each school year with your child’s new teacher. If the custodial parent has a court order that limits the rights of one parent in matters such as custody or visitation, the custodial parent should deliver a copy of the court order to the office of each school that his/her children attend. The parent should also discuss the mat-ter with the children’s teachers to ensure the court order is fully understood. Please remember that the school must follow the law in matters of custody and

Bookfair Durring ConferencesThe Enchanted Forest Bookfair will be held in the Elemen-

tary School Library during the fall parent/teacher conferences. The date for parent/teacher conferences this year are: Monday, October 22 and Tuesday, October 23. The times the bookfair will be open will be Monday-1:00 pm to 7:30 pm and on Tuesday will be open all day during the school day for the students to shop and will close at 7:30 pm.. This is a great way for the elementary library to raise money to purchase books from Scholastic for our students. We subscribe to Scholastic’s Book Crate program where we receive a box of new(published) books every month. We re-ceived between 7-9 new books a month. The students eyes light up when they see the hot off the press titles.

Thank you for your great support in promoting Reading.

The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) becomes available on October 1st. This is an important step in the financial aid process that gives you access to federal student loans, grants, and work-study opportunities as a college student.

To get ready to file the FAFSA, students & their parents/guardians should set up a Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID). This is a username and password that you will use to fill out and sign the FAFSA form. Visit fsaid.ed.gov to set up your ID, and don’t forget to write it down! You’ll use the same FSA ID every year to file the FAFSA.

MS/HS Music NewsBy Benjamin Schauer, 5-12 Vocal/Instrumental [email protected]

It’s hard to believe the start of another school year is almost upon us! I’m very much looking forward to a new school year and having the opportunity to work with our fantastic students again.

Here is the initial schedule for this upcoming school year. Please note that additional performances may be added as the school year progresses. Dates in BOLD print are mandatory.

I am excited for two new events on our schedule this year. The first is a Mass Band performance at the last home varsity football game. This special ensemble will feature our entire instrumental music program in grades 5-12. Students attending this perfor-mance will get into the game free and will sit with the HS Pep Band until halftime has concluded. More notice of this event will be sent out in mid-September. We also have the opportunity to present a musical this spring. Rights are currently being negoti-ated, but I recommend you mark your calendars now because it is a show you will not want to miss!

As always, I encourage any BVS student interested in music to sign up in the guidance office. Choir is open to all students, regardless of experience. Anyone inter-ested in band is welcome but must talk with Mr. Schauer about expecta-tions and requirements before being allowed in the ensemble.

It’s going to be a great year! I have been spend-ing the summer planning with students and parents about some exciting new projects, so make sure to like our Facebook page (Boyer Valley K-12 Music Department) for regular updates and develop-ments. See you this fall!

Matches in Teammates meet once a week at school to play board games, work on projects, or just talk.

Pay your menoring experience forward and join the team. One visit a week can make a life-long impact.

The Boyer Valley FFA has had a great start to the school year and is excited for even more fun things to come this fall. Contest teams have been working really hard since the start of the school year. Beef Extravaganza is a contest put on by the Iowa Cattlemen, consisting of 10 different stations, all related to the beef industry. The stations include: credit and finance, keep/cull, seedstock merchandising, job interview, industry issues, nutrition, reproduction, health, marketing, Beef Management

Challenge. Boyer Valley FFA will be taking two teams to Ames in December for this contest. The soils teams competed on Septem-ber 24th. They did GREAT, check out results on our social media! Earlier this month we hosted a field day with the Iowa Soybean Association. We served over 50 people and had Horizon, Iowa Soybean Association and Travis Sullivan with Pioneer there to talk with those in attendance. A big thank you to Jeff Mordhorst and the Monona County Cattlemen for the use of their grill as well as Valley View Bed and Breakfast for allowing us to host in your driveway. Students are are now getting ready to attend the 91st National FFA Convention at the end of October. They will be taking a chartered bus with other FFA chapters to Indianapolis, Indiana. While on their trip, they will tour an exotic feline rescue center, Lucas Oil Stadium, and Grant Farms. One day of the trip will be spent at the convention center, attending a session and vis-iting with agriculture vendors, colleges, etc. November 5th we will compete in the annual dodgeball tournament against Denison to defend our traveling trophy title. We are looking forward to hosting sub-districts in February. Anyone that would like to help, please contact Mrs. Stoberl at [email protected]. As a re-minder our next FFA meeting dates are October 30th and Novem-ber 5th. If students are still interested in joining FFA it is not too late! Members must be in at least one semester of ag classes and pay membership dues. If interested, talk to Mrs. Stoberl at school! As always, be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter to get the most recent updates on chapter happenings.
