June’s Book: The Marines of Montford Point written by Melton A. McLaurin, professor emeritus of history at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, copyright 2007, 216 pages with illustrations and available in paperback.

Between 1942-1949 over 20,000 Black Marine Corps recruits received basic training at CampMontford Point, located adjacent to Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. Most of the Montford Point Marines went on to serve in the Pacific during WWII. This book tells the stories of these Marines through 60 interviews with veterans in which they recount enlisting, training, segregation of the military and Jim Crow south, and combat in WWII, Korea and Vietnam.

This book is paired with the current Bowers display Test of Medal: Charles J. Shaw and the Montford Point Marines, on display until June 27, 2021. Mr. Shaw was a drill instructor at Montford Point and went on to become the first Black Marine Corps drill instructor of an integrated platoon. The book and exhibit honor the legacy of these men who served their country.
