Start Over!Having sung in numerous choirs, I have had the opportunity to experience such a terrible start that the conductor simply drops hands and tells us that we’re going to start over. Back to the top of the page and we have a fresh start to do it better this time.

A dear friend of mine, when she was about eight years old wrote a story about a child in class given a spelling test. Asked to spell “cat” she wrote down “K-a-t.” The teacher, in disgust, sent her home and told her to practice. The child returned home, got pencil

and paper and wrote 50 times, “K-a-t.”

I hope this year we can get a fresh start and we can learn from our mistakes. Let’s at least make some new mistakes, rather than repeating the things we have done in the past. Oh, I know how easy it is to get into a rut and just continue doing the same old stuff ... or we can look for new responses to old problems and, hopefully, do things differently.

To each of you I wish the very best and look forward to working with you as each of us seeks the opportunity, by the Grace of God, to “start over.”

Blessings,

Word from Ted2016 was a great year for BCUMC youth. The highlights included a fantastic Adventure Day Camp, a very successful open swim program in the summer and a party featuring local youth musicians, Beginner’s Luck. As we move into winter we will be focusing on larger events, and we will continue with Sunday morning breakfast. Please pray that God provides an opportunity to connect with SLV youth who are not already connected with the church.

JOYS:Sunshine Johnson is being released from the hospital after heart surgery. She is in our prayers as she recovers.

We are thankful for rain. Doesn’t the air smell nice just after it’s rained?

BIG NEWS! Four times the number of children in Sub-Saharan Africa are surviving – and not dying from malaria – than when Imagine No Malaria launched just five years ago. When we began this initiative, a child died from malaria every 30 seconds. According to the World Health Organization’s World Malaria Report released December 2015, it is now 1/5th of that.

CONCERNS:Katie Jacobson is having surgery this week. Prayers for her quick and complete recovery.

Phyllis Mayfield spend a few days at Dominican having a pacemaker installed. Our love and prayers go to her!

Lelayna Carr’s Husband, Mike, broke his leg. We wish him a speedy recovery.

Gina Jett’s cousin passed away. We surround the family and friends in prayer.

First Responders and utility workers who do their important and dangerous work. We depend on them to keep us safe and to keep the power on.

For our shut-ins who are unable to be in church because of age or illness. Our prayers are with them.

If you have joys or concerns and desire prayer, please contact Linda Lininger, our prayer coordinator, [email protected], or the church office with your request.

THANKS!To ALL who worked so hard to make Christmas Eve and Christmas morning so special. If I start naming them I’m sure I’ll forget someone, so you know who you are. THANK YOU!

The Season of EpiphanyDennis Bratcher

In western Christian tradition, January 6 is celebrated as Epiphany. It goes by other names in various church traditions. In Hispanic and Latin culture, as well as some places in Europe, it is known as Three Kings’ Day (el Dia de los Tres Reyes).

Epiphany is the climax of the Advent/Christmas Season and the Twelve Days of Christmas, which are usually counted from the evening of December 25th until the morning of January 6th, which is the Twelfth Day. In following this older custom of counting the days beginning at sundown, the evening of January 5th is the Twelfth Night. This is an occasion for feasting in some cultures, including the baking of a special King’s Cake as part of the festivities of Epiphany (a King’s Cake is part of the observance of Mardi Gras in French Catholic culture of the Southern USA).
