Reflections Two months ago, I took out an on-line subscription to The Church Times.

I did this because I wanted to be more informed about happenings in the Church of England. Listened to Edward Stourton and fellow BBC ‘Sunday’ Editors, providing a backdrop of the week’s events in UK Faith Communities, for many years now but, as Sub-Warden of Lay Ministers and therefore an ex-officio member of the Mission and Pastoral Committee, I felt the need to be more informed.

Now, I wish I had not. It’s chaos out there! Now, I am not averse to chaos. Chaos, to me, means recognising that things are not right and have not been so for a very long time but now, ‘the toothpaste is out of the tube’ as Richard Rohr neatly summarises. On the one-hand, there are some really serious issues being addressed and on the other, there are numerous references to ‘doing things differently’ in the future.

Of those serious issues, which may well ensure no-one crosses the threshold of a church building again, are scandals which would make your toes curl. These need to be addressed, there is no getting away from it and I, for one, am extremely grateful to those standing in the firing line of historical happenings over which they had no control but who need to compassionately hold the outpouring consequences, on our behalf, and find significantly diverse ways to move forward.

‘On our behalf’…now that phrase rings a bell. Who else has been right there in scandalous and abusive situations, on our behalf? Who has shown us that there are different ways to do things which will bring peace, reconciliation, and hope, into appalling and mind-numbing situations, on our behalf?

Think carefully before you answer those two questions because the answer is key to all of us doing things in a radically different way, that is, in an emotionally, spiritually, and non-judgementally healthy future. There will be losses as well as gains, old treasures being laid aside for rough diamonds, discouragements as well as hopefulness but hiding heads in the sand is not an

option, for reasons too numerous to mention here.

So, will I keep reading the Church Times? Yes, I will, and I pray you might start to read it [paper copy or online] too: https://www.churchtimes.co.uk/ Ponder those two questions as well and let me know your thoughts, via the Church Office email address.

Let us also greet September’s new beginnings, with a sense of adventure and hopefulness, in Jesus’ name.
