LessonQuestions to Guide Students

Check for Understanding

A student will need a Botley: Push on an Object worksheet.

First, have students focus on what are the similarities and dierences between the dierent balls? (This can be done in the center or together as a class as the centers are being explained).

Next, the students line up Botley at the “Start Line” and have its robotic arm in line with the object.

Discuss with the students, “What do we need to program into Botley to have it move towards the object (execute)?”Teacher answer: Students will need to program Botley to move

forward three times.

Students will have Botley move forward and bump into each individual object three times. Students will record if the object moved past the cone (yes or no).

When Botley has moved each individual object three times (a total of 9 times), they will move on to the rest of the worksheet.

They will take their recordings and tally the number of yes and no’s. Then they will create a bar graph from the number of yes and no’s.

For advanced students: instead of recording yes or no, after the object moves, students can measure the distance from Botley to the object. They can compare numbers to see which object moved further.

What happened when Botley bumped into an object?Teacher: We see the object move (motion); can introduce this concept through discussion with students.

Why do you think dierent objects move at dierent distances when bumped by Botley?Teacher: Focus on the weight and material of the object.

What can help the object to move slower or faster?Teacher: Focus on force; can introduce this concept through discussion with students.

Use the worksheet to check for students’ ability to conduct an investigation, collect data, and create a graph from the data.
