UPCOMING FROM CELEBRATION THEATRE

Dream BoyAdapted by Eric Rosen from Jim Grimsley’s

gothic, coming-of-age/coming out novel Directed by Michael Matthews

A twisted, beautiful, lovely love story!

The Boy From Oz by Peter Allen, Nick Enright

and Martin Sherman Directed by Michael A. Shepperd

The Broadway musical hit based on the life of Peter Allen.

Plus don’t miss our Celebrating New Works reading series, the third Tuesday of every month at West Hollywood City Council Chambers.

CELEBRATION THEATRE MISSIONCelebration Theatre is a community of artists dedicated to presenting innovative, provocative and relevant work that examines the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer experi-ence. We endeavor to challenge society’s perception of the community and give a vibrant voice to its evolving identity.

Page 5: BOOTYCANDY - Footlights · the musical The Boy From Oz. I want to personally thank you for attending tonight’s performance. I saw my first production at Celebration Theatre in 2001

Let me begin by extending a big welcome to you! It has been a while since Celebration Theatre has had a home to call our own and we are grateful that you have found us here at the Lex Theatre.

We are proud to kickoff our new season with the Los Angeles premiere of Bootycandy by Robert O’Hara followed by Dreamboy and and ending our season with the musical The Boy From Oz.

I want to personally thank you for attending tonight’s performance. I saw my first production at Celebration Theatre in 2001 and knew I had to be a part of this theatre. Since then I have worked as a stage manager, actor, props designer, costume designer, sound mixer, and in many other positions. You have seen me working box office, front of house, ushering, or serving you concessions, ensuring that you feel welcome and appreciated and making sure your Celebration Theatre experience, be it your first or your fifty-first, is enjoyable and memorable. Once you cross the threshold into Celebration Theatre, I want you to feel like you are part of Celebration’s family.

Celebration’s past and present have always been about being a place for family. As Michael Kearns pointed out in his Chuck Rowland Pioneer Award acceptance speech, Celebration in its early years “had overflowing capacity to speak to a tribe of

GLBT and, yes, questioning people who were finding their identity, inventing them-selves and reinventing themselves during a period of mourning that we thought would never end.” And today we are still endeavor-ing to be a place that speaks to the evolving identity and experience in the LGBT commu-nity.

And the LGBT community has often been a com-munity of individuals that had to create their own family in a world where their blood family members had not accepted them. Celebration has always strove to be an open and nurturing place where the LGBT com-munity could share experiences and feel a sense of understand-ing and acceptance among like-minded individuals. As RuPaul points out, “as gay

people we get to choose our family. We get to choose the people we’re around.”

And I think that is why I keep coming back. Celebration for me, and hope-fully for you, is about community and the family we choose. I choose to be around these crazy, talented individuals. This theatre and the people involved with it are more than colleagues, coworkers, or friends, they are my family.

And now that you are here, you are part of the family too.
