Transcript of Bond is Back - Casino Royale - Inaugural Ball Tribute Book 2014
Welcome to “Casino Royale”Konstanten DaniyelyanInaugural Ball Committee Chair
Once again we have the opportunity to come together to experience what is always a wonderful event- The Chamber’s Inaugural Ball. And it is my pleasure to welcome you all to this incredible event. To be celebrating the 102nd Inaugural ball is an accomplishment of its own.
Tonight we will be honoring Dr. Barry Leonard aka Mr. Bond – 007 at Casino Royale. Dr. Leonard over the years has dedicated countless hours of his time to the success of the Chamber. He has also served the community by volunteering his time with many other organizations to help them grow & thrive. He truly is a champion for our community and we appreciate his leadership.
As chairman of this year’s Inaugural Ball, I have had the pleasure of working with Nancy and Fuyumi, and so many volunteers who made this evening very special. Every committee member not only made time for the many meetings, but also throughout the week performing many assignments to culminate in this beautiful gala. I personally want to thank each of them for their time and commitment; I am confident we would not be who we are today without their dedication.
On behalf of myself and the committee, we hope you enjoy this unforgettable evening.
Now join me as we welcome, Diana Sanchez as our 2014-2015 Chairman of the Board.
Cheers!

Tomorrow Never Dies… and neither will my dedication and commitment to the Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber of Commerce.
I can’t believe that two years as board chair flew by so quickly. It has been so rewarding to have chaired this organization ten years ago and again for the past two. I’ve seen the Chamber face its growing pains several times during that period and am always pleased to see us moving forward in new directions.
I think the best theme for my last year is “what is old is new again” as we looked at our old events and programs and gave them new twists, new life. Our B.A.S.H. is moving to a new home this year at the Valley Relics Museum where we can see the highlights of past San Fernando Valley businesses and promote the businesses that make the Valley great today. We launched our restaurant guide to encourage the community to eat locally and it has brought several new restaurants into the Chamber. We introduced a new Meet-Up group to the Valley – Thirsty Thursday – the mixer that quenches your thirst for business. And tonight, we’ve revamped our long-time favorite event – the Inaugural Ball – with a new twist on the normal sit-down dinner.
It’s wonderful to see so many new faces at our events and on our committees and that is through the hard work of our sales team Stacey and Bob. They’ve brought
in many new members over the past few months and our membership has grown quickly because of their efforts.
Like every board chairman, these successes are not mine alone, and I salute my board, our members, and our dedicated staff: Fuyumi, Cynthia, and Nancy.
I look forward to working with Diana and her new board – they are a talented group of individuals and have already sat down together to bring forward some new programs that help businesses be successful in today’s challenging business climate.
Thank you for your support, contributions, and friendship. It has been a pleasure serving as Chairman of the Board of such a fine organization. Diana, although I have enjoyed the ride, it’s your turn at the Chamber reigns and for you to protect the Chamber Book of Secrets.
Dr. Barry Leonard Chairman of the Board
2012-2014
Nancy Hoffman Vanyek Chief Executive Officer
I think every year in my life, something significant has happened: For example: 2007 the Chamber office had a fire. 2011 the Chamber turned 100. 2012 was my 25 year anniversary at work. And 2014 was the year I asked for help.
It’s not that I’ve never asked for help before, but 2014, I gave up some control.
If you haven’t heard, I’m a control freak. Maybe I’m older. Maybe a little wiser. Either way, I’m just busier. And that leads me to my story about a man named Evan Press.
Evan is on our Government Affairs Committee and, at the beginning of the year, that committee came up with several new programs to roll out in 2014. Most are smaller, easy to manage programs, but one is adding an entirely new major event to the Chamber’s line up – the State of the Valley Luncheon. Evan was quick to volunteer and see what he could do. We met and I took care of everything. Scheduled, agenda planned, speakers invited. Done. Or so I thought…I found out we selected a date during the city council recess and only a couple of our invited speakers could participate. I wanted to cry. I didn’t have time to start over. I sat at my computer staring at the screen trying to figure out where to start. And then I called Evan. He has background in government affairs. He’s coordinated events. And he was the new chair of the Government Affairs Committee. Evan took the reigns, rebooked all of our speakers, sent off the information they all requested, and kept me informed. I didn’t have to do anything to get the event back on track. And it felt great!
It’s one of those stories that show that we’re always learning and always growing. I just had growing pains. They don’t hurt so much anymore. And they shouldn’t. We have an amazing cache of volunteers full of energy, enthusiasm and expertise. Mark, Mary, Konstanten, Steve, Mike Thomas, Jason Corey, Gene Cohen, Bob Epstein, Debbie Enokian… the list goes on and on and on. And 27 years into my career, a man named Evan Press showed me that what President Truman said is true: “It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.”
A Message From N
Diana Sanchez Board Chair2014-2015
I am humbled by the opportunity to serve as your Board Chair. The Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber is truly an incredible chamber. It is the passion and dedication of all of you that distinguishes us from the rest.
We cannot begin the year without celebrating Dr. Barry Leonard for his inspiration and leadership this past year. I not only have big shoes to fill but “Bond” shoes to fill. Barry has been an incredible mentor to me and I take comfort in knowing he is only a phone call away.
I know this year will be an exciting year for the Chamber. We have an extraordinary Board of Directors and a very talented chamber staff already working together to make this a productive and remarkable year.
Any chamber that has withstood the test of time, over 102 years, is doing something right. I look forward to continuing the successes of my predecessors and moving the momentum forward as we meet the new opportunities before us.
The World Is Not Enough
Presented To Los Angeles City Council District 12
The Chairman’s Award of Excellence is selected solely by the Chamber’s Chairman of the Board to recognize an outstanding Chamber member for their ingenuity, teamwork, creativity, and contributions to the Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber’s success.
Councilman Englander and his staff are always responsive to the Chamber’s needs, going above and beyond, ready with expertise, knowledge and resources. The Chamber has come to rely on CD12 as its “go-to” for all its City needs. Whether or not it’s within CD12’s jurisdiction, their office is willing to help or connect the Chamber with the right person. That willingness and infectious can-do attitude has earned CD12 a great reputation and a strong relationship with the Chamber.
The Chamber is fortunate to have wonderful partners in our local government to make the Chamber a successful organization. We look forward to many more years working side-by-side with Councilman Englander & his fantastic staff.
Chairman’s Award of Excellence
Los Angeles City Council District 12
Chamber Award Of Excellence
Presented to Gene Cohen, Kucher & Cohen, LLC, CPA’s
The Chamber Award of Excellence is selected by the Chamber’s Executive Committee and recognizes the one Member that has been “extra involved” — done the most to support the Chamber’s programs and projects in areas such as most volunteer hours, best support for different activities, etc.
Gene Cohen of Kucher & Cohen, LLC, CPA’s is our 2014 recipient. Thanks to Gene Cohen’s financial acuity and hands-on dedication, the Chamber has improved its financial literacy and accounting precision. His time and expertise are invaluable to the current and future financial viability of the Chamber.
Gene Cohen
Community Award of Excellence
Presented to San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission
The Community Award of Excellence recognizes the Chamber Member that has devoted time and energy to the community in a meaningful way and has been involved in programs and projects aimed at assisting the community-at-large.
Founded 15 years ago to serve the homeless population, the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission is being recognized for their excellence in community collaboration. Involved in over 10 different community organizations, the Rescue Mission emphasizes Calibration. They are aware that though as one organization, they cannot be the be-all and end-all to meet every single need in the community. Instead, they have created a strong bond and partnership with other community groups to most effectively make a large impact on the community as a whole. For example, when they are abundant in resources, they can help other groups that are in deficit. They are fortunate to have found trustworthy reciprocation from these partner agencies. Being in collaboration with other organizations challenges their view points and helps to keep them ever evolving, helping them be cutting-edge, and the most helpful to the community.
Konstanten Daniyelyan
Presented to Konstanten Daniyelyan, People Helping People
The Chamber Volunteer of the Year Award honors a Chamber member who has volunteered many hours of time, talent and energy to the success and growth of the Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber.
Konstanten Daniyelyan has been chosen for the Volunteer of the Year Award. Konstanten not only serves on several Chamber committees including, Ambassadors, BASH and Inaugural Ball, but he is constantly recruiting and advocating for the Chamber, even on his personal time. Often one of the first to arrive and one of the last to leave, the Chamber can always count on Konstanten to lend a hand and make the Chamber look good. Konstanten’s efforts and generosity have made the Greater San Fernando Valley Chamber more effective in serving the San Fernando Valley region.
Volunteer Of The Year
Dr. Barry Leonard
Presented to Dr. Barry Leonard The late Walter Mendenhall, known for many years as the dean of San Fernando Valley publishers, established the Walter Mendenhall Man of the Year Award in 1941 and designated that it was to be presented annually to the person who gave most unselfishly of him or herself to make Van Nuys a better community. After his death, the award was continued by his widow and his son Ferdinand Mendenhall, editor and co-owner of the Van Nuys News.
The award evolved into the Mendenhall Memorial Award in memory of both Walter and Ferdinand Mendenhall and presented to the Chamber’s retiring board chair for outstanding leadership qualities in directing the Chamber and its business and community activities during the year.
Dr. Barry Leonard, the Chamber’s 2012-2014 board chair, will be presented with the Mendenhall Memorial Award. Dr. Barry Leonard is recognized for his leadership and deep commitment to the Chamber. During his two-year tenure, the Chamber launched a new networking event – Thirsty Thursdays; doubled the size of its Ambassadors committee; received the President’s Circle Award from the CalChamber in 2013; and was voted Best Chamber of Commerce by the Los Angeles Daily News Readers’ Choice Awards.
