WELCOME TO THE GARRICK THEATRE’S 2018 SUMMER SEASON. When the theatre launched its first Saturday Summer Music Series (SSMS) in 2011, few people likely anticipated the extent to which its summer programming would add to the social and cultural life of Bonavista and the region. Today many area residents and visitors incorporate the Garrick's schedule into their summer plans, ensuring that they see the performances on their wish list.

The theatre also has value for musicians; its commitment to presenting a broad range of musical genres in a regular weekly format provides both established and emerging artists with opportunities to perform in a soft-seat venue that can be difficult to find in summer. This year's offerings will not disappoint. You will find accomplished musicians in our two weekly programs: the long standing SSMS and the more recent Thursdays on Church. There are also two special Wednesday performances. On July 25th Tim Baker - the talented founder and frontman of the much heralded “Hey Rosetta” - will take the main stage, as will Anita Best and Sandy Morris on August 1, presenting their new album of traditional songs that they have been performing beautifully together for many years. The Garrick’s Live on the Lawn – a series of free afternoon concerts created in partnership with Parks Canada and Provincial Historic Sites – is held at the Ryan Premises National Historic Site and the Mockbeggar Plantation Provincial Historic Site. If you are in the mood for a good movie, you may want to try Side Door Cinema at the Garrick Annex on Fridays nights. This series features both local and international films that offer exceptional writing, acting and direction. This program provides dedicated pages for each series, but you may wish to begin with the “Handy List of Everything”, a chronological compilation of all events near the back of the document. As always, we are grateful to the Town of Bonavista for its annual support, and to the many loyal donors, sponsors, volunteers, staff, artists, partners and patrons whose combined contributions make the Garrick a vibrant place. We look forward to seeing you at the Garrick this summer.

Regards,David Bradley

Originally from Bonavista, business partners Stephen White and Michael Abbott know what it means to be part of a strong community with strong ties.

In fact, they’ve built a business with that same sense of commitment and dedication in mind. They work hard to provide outstanding service to all their clients in a tailored, timely, and efficient manner by a team of professionals that genuinely enjoys working together. Their professionalism, courtesy, and excellence extends not only to their clients, but to their team and community. And much like the Garrick, their accounting firm greatly appreciates the support of its clients and partners.

They also understand the value of the Garrick. Stephen notes that, “growing up in Bonavista and having spent many nights at the Garrick Theatre, we know its importance to the community and what it is to be part of something special. Seeing it evolve into the beautiful venue it is today brings a great sense of pride to us and our hometown.” Michael couldn't agree more. “We are honoured, ” he says, “to support the Garrick in continuing its work as a shining light in the community.”

Recognize an opportunity. That’s exactly what Charles R. Bell did when, in 1933, he took over a then bankrupt food brokerage business. Bell expanded the company’s portfolio, initially through the addition of new grocery brands and later by adding commercial and recreational marine products. Today, under the direction of Bell's descendants, including Chairman and son Randy Bell, the Bell Group of Companies operates throughout Atlantic Canada, focusing on four key areas: retail, wholesale, distribution and real estate.

“An important part of our success is the support we receive from the people of Newfoundland and Labrador” says Randy Bell. “In return, we like to give back by supporting community-led initiatives like the Garrick Theatre. We are delighted to be a Platinum Sponsor this year and look forward to this coming season”.

Like the Garrick, the Harbour Quarters Inn is tangible proof that old buildings can be put to beautiful new uses. The circa 1910 property originally served as the offices of local fish merchant Phillip Templeman and later, as J.T. Swyers General Store. Today, it’s a four star, heritage inn boasting 12 rooms, licensed restaurant with outdoor patio and gift shop. “We’ve been sponsoring the Garrick since it reopened in 2010” notes Lora Swyers, Harbour Quarters’ Assistant Manager. “We provide an annual cash donation and in-kind support, like discounted room rates”. Why does the Harbour Quarters support the Garrick? “We love to see unique, local talent being brought to the main stage” says Lora “Plus, it’s a great venue for tourists to experience Newfoundland and Labrador’s best music and humour.”

Russelltown Inn welcomes you with a tradition of Newfoundland hospitality, rich heritage, and chic creative space for every traveler. Located in the quiet, historic neighborhood of “Russelltown”, just minutes from Downtown Bonavista and within walking distance to the harbour front, shops, museums, restaurants and the Garrick Theatre, Russelltown Inn strives to exceed the needs of valued guests. With rooms located throughout the property in multiple restored heritage buildings including a tinsmith’s home, a merchant manor and a traditional 19th century barn, the unique neighbourhood inn model allows guests to immerse themselves in an authentic and historic neighborhood where the place is an experience all its own.

As John Norman of Bonavista Living notes, “Russelltown Inn and its parent companies, Bonavista Living and Bonavista Creative, view support for culture and the arts through the Garrick Theatre and its SSMS as key to a vibrant Bonavista where the creative economy flourishes. Indeed, our shared goals to preserve and refurbish Bonavista’s built landscape and to celebrate and advance our rich cultural heritage are interwoven.”

“We view the SSMS as key to a vibrant Bonavista.”

Hospitality has been the foundation of Mary Brown’s, ever since the chain opened its doors in St. John’s in 1969. This fast-growing Canadian franchise, with 140 stores nationwide, knows that its signature fresh and delicious, made from scratch chicken and taters, is a key ingredient in the company's success. But it's more than that. It’s about making every guest feel special, and being involved in your community. No one understands that better than Barry Cousins, the new Owner/Operator in Bonavista. He explains: “It’s important to me to be part of this town, to get involved, to help our neighbours, and to support the Garrick Theatre. That’s what I believe in and what Mary Brown’s stands for as a company.” Barry is excited to be in Bonavista and to participate in everything that this beautiful town has to offer, including the Garrick. In the meantime, he invites you to drop by the store and say hello. He notes, “when you come in to my Mary Brown’s, you’ll be treated like family.”

A BRIEF HISTORY

Page 47: BONAVISTA BAY - The Garrick Theatre

OPENING DAY. 21 year-old John Bradley peered through the windows of the Garrick’s double doors, watching the gathering crowd on the street outside. It was Christmas Day, 1945 and optimism was in the air. World War II was over, Newfoundland’s return to some form of self-government now seemed inevitable, and opportunities abounded. The Bonavista Cottage Hospital (the first publicly-funded medical facility on the Peninsula) was completed during the war, followed by the Bonavista Cold Storage Company’s new premises (still operated today by Ocean Choice International) which employed hundreds of men and women in the processing and export of frozen cod. Newfoundland’s prolonged version of the Great Depression had faded in the wake of wartime prosperity. John had every reason to believe the Garrick would thrive. FOR THE FIRST THREE DECADES, the Garrick was open seven nights a week with matinees on Saturday. It was not unusual for folks to come in carloads from as far away as Open Hall or Trinity to see the latest movies. Older boys and men would gather in the lobby for conversation. Patrons helped take tickets and clean up, making it difficult to distinguish between paid employees and volunteers. Saturday matinees were the domain of the young - a time for meeting friends and making new ones. In an era when children were separated not only by community, but also by denominational schools, the Garrick was a great melting pot where all could meet without the strict supervision of parents, teachers or clergy.

A BRIEF HISTORY

Page 48: BONAVISTA BAY - The Garrick Theatre

THERE WERE CHALLENGES to the theatre’s success in later years, but none so great as the cod moratorium imposed in 1992. The shock of social and economic dislocation that followed still reverberates today. Bonavista’s population fell from about 5500 at the time to just 3500 in 2011, as people sought employment elsewhere. Other nearby towns on the Peninsula, where Cod was King, suffered the same or greater declines. Businesses struggled; many closed. The Garrick carried on until 2000, but by then, the theatre was no longer viable as a private enterprise. The market was now too small. IN 2003, JOHN AND HIS FAMILY DONATED the Garrick to the Bonavista Historical Society and its sister organization, the Bonavista Historic Townscape Foundation. John’s younger brother, Gordon, who was chair of both organizations, felt there was a future for the Garrick as a community-run social enterprise. The project fit well with the Foundation’s work to strengthen the community, including the revitalization of Church Street. Raising the necessary funds took several years, but on April 3, 2010, the Foundation re-opened the Garrick as a multi-

purpose facility equipped for both cinema and live performance. THIS YEAR MARKS THE 73TH ANNIVERSARY of the Garrick, and the eighth year of the Saturday Summer Music Series (SSMS). The oldest theatre in the province is now one of the most active. The SSMS and other events attract many of the province’s top artists to the Garrick’s stage, but the theatre also provides a forum for local artists, especially the young, to develop their talent. TODAY, THE GARRICK IS FUELED by the same sense of optimism that led to its creation seven decades ago. That optimism and commitment is shared by a broad group - staff, volunteers, sponsors, donors and patrons - who have a special bond with the theatre. There is an understanding that this superb community facility has an important role to play in the quality of life in the region, and all must share in the responsibility to sustain it. Together, they have placed the Garrick on a strong footing, allowing it to reclaim its rightful place as the region’s premier social and cultural centre.

Scotiabankers help their neighbours. “We support community projects and organizations like the Bonavista Historic Townscape Foundation through two key programs” says local Scotiabank Customer Experience Lead, Beverly Cotter. “Our Employee Volunteer Program provides donations to community organizations in which employees or Scotiabank retirees have been active volunteers. While our Team Community Program matches funds raised by employee teams.”

“We’ve been a part of Bonavista’s business community since 1910” says Ms. Beverly Cotter. “We’re proud of the Garrick and the role it plays in this community. We’re proud to partner with them and we would gladly do it again.”

How’s that for a good neighbour!

Robin’s and the Garrick. They go together like ... well, coffee and donuts. Since 1975, Robin’s has grown from a single coffee shop in Thunder Bay, Ontario to 130 locations that stretch from Vancouver Island to Newfoundland and Labrador. The Bonavista location opened in 2011. “Robin’s has been a corporate sponsor of the Garrick Theatre for the past couple of years.” notes Franchise Owner Sonya Tremblett Gray. “In return, they provide us with a pair of tickets to each summer music event. We then combine these tickets with Robin’s treats and create contests on social media as a way of promoting both our products and the Garrick’s shows”. It’s a win-win approach. “A large part of Robin’s success comes from the tremendous support we receive from the community.” says Sonya. “As a business owner, I believe it’s important to pay that support forward.”

Cod may no longer be king, but the fishery remains an essential part of the local economy. Today, Bonavista’s Crab Processing Plant, owned and operated by Ocean Choice International (OCI) is one of Newfoundland’s largest crab producers. And with roughly 350 employees, it’s also the town’s largest employer. “OCI has been a Garrick Platinum Sponsor for a number of years.” says Manager, Curtis Fisher. “The theatre was always a focal point of the town. Since the improvements to the building, and with the number and quality of events, the Garrick has resumed that role. With OCI being one of the largest employers in the area, we feel it’s important to support a facility like this - one that clearly benefits our employees and their families.”

There’s no denying the importance of key infrastructure and services. But, for the Town of Bonavista, building a community means looking beyond the basics of water, sewage and garbage collection. As Town Manager, David Hiscock notes, the municipality has long dedicated roughly 20 percent of its annual operating budget to tourism, culture and recreation - all in areas that improve the quality of life for residents and encourage private investment. About half of that amount goes to heritage initiatives, including support to the Garrick Theatre, Matthew Legacy, the Bonavista Museum, Bonavista Archives, and the Town’s Heritage Grant Program, plus maintenance of public gardens, boardwalks and trails. Mayor John Norman acknowledges this approach may distinguish Bonavista from other NL municipalities, “but we know support for the Garrick and other heritage resources delivers big benefits to the community and bolsters business development.” In 2014, the Heritage Canada Foundation (National Trust) recognized Bonavista’s forward thinking by awarding the Town the prestigious Prince of Wales Prize for "Municipal Heritage Leadership". Clearly, this small town isn’t afraid to think big.
