AWSUM News caught up with sensational YouTube comedy wondergirl, Suzelle DIY, who has just landed her very own slot on Comedy Central – not bad for a poppie with a hectic wannabe accent and an ever-silent best friend! Suzelle DIY’s

YouTube channel has more than 48 000 subscribers and picks up 40 000 views on the day a new episode launches.

Q: Congratulations on the latest feather in your cap – your very own slot on Comedy Central. How does it feel to play in the big league now? A: I feel like a million rands. It has been a dream come true to watch myself on TV.Q: Who is Suzelle really? Tell us a bit more about yourself – likes, dislikes, favourite movie, favourite song, favourite book.

A: I’m just a small town girl with a passion for DIY, braai-ing and dinner parties. My movie of the moment is the

How To Be Single and my favourite book is How to do Just about Everything by The Reader’s Digest.

Q: Why do you think you are so popular? What is your secret to success?A: I think people like that the DIY in my videos is useful, and that sometimes things go wrong. My secret is to keep going no matter what happens!

Q: What are your top five DIY tips for women like yourself who like to be glamorous and never get their hands dirty while doing the dirty workA: Right, this is a good one. It’s important to always look your best no matter what you are busy doing.• Wear an apron when you are in the kitchen.• Use safety goggles when you chop onions to

stop your eyes from tearing up and smudging your make-up.

•Run your nails over a bar of soap before you do the gardening. It will keep the dirt from getting under your nails.

•Buy a box of disposable gloves. They are great to use for any DIY project.

• I like to cut up plastic packets and lay them down on my work surface to prevent any mess escaping

Q: What do you do for fun and relaxation in your leisure time? A: I like to go for a coffee with my best friend, Marianne. I like to watch cooking shows and look for DIY ideas on

•Allowcooling,andthenmixingwiththeremainingfillingingredients,exceptthespinach.

•Rolloutthepastryuntil2mmthickplacethemushroommixtureontothecentreofthepastryandshapeintoasausageshape,topwiththespinachandthenfoldthepastryoverthefillingtomakeaparcel.Brushwithbeatenegg.

•Liftontoabakingsheetlinedwithbakingpaper,this makesiteasiertoliftoffthesheetwhencooked.

•Bakeinapre-heated200degCovenfor35to 40minutesoruntilgoldenandcrisp.

•Servewithlargemixedsalad

I always have a roll or two of frozen pastry in my freezer, you

should too, it comes in handy if I want to make a tart or pie at

the drop of a hat. I love little jam tarts and when the craving

hits me, I make my way to the freezer and pull out a roll of shop

bought frozen pastry, wait for it to thaw, roll it out, cut out little

rounds and pop them into the hollows of a muffin tin, place a

little butter in the base, sprinkle with desiccated coconut and

a spoonful of any jam that takes my fancy , pop it into a hot

oven, put the kettle on and before you know it I’m munching

on jam tarts and sipping tea. The other thing I like to do with a

sheet of pastry is fill it and make a roulade. A roulade is a dish of

filled rolled meat or pastry, the term roulade originates from the

French word "rouler", meaning "to roll". Now what I like about

having a sheet of pastry handy is that you can fill it with a million

different things and call them, tarts pies and roulades, you can

make any of these from scratch or use up left-overs from the

night before to make a pie.

A limousine is spacious and can transport a whole bunch of your friends. This is fun for getting excited on the way to the event!

10. The afterpartyMany matric farewells have a official afterparty. They are less formal than the matric farewell, but be sure to check the dress code of the venue beforehand. Charity WeekKlein Boishaai had a dream. A dream to help others in need. We started off the Charity Week collections in the first week of this term. Each grade had specific items allocated to them to give to a specific institution.

The learners astounded with very generous contributions and a fantastic effort to make a difference to those who need it.

It was a great success achieved by working together as a Klein Boishaai family. Thank you to each and every boy who did their part and made this dream come true.

Op Vrydag, 6 Mei, het ons bome geplant. Alhoewel dit nie nasionale boomplantdag was nie, was hierdie geleentheid vir ons baie spesiaal. Ons het die drie kleurgroepe se bome geplant. Elke kleurgroep (Wit, Donkerblou en Ligteblou) het ‘n boom wat uniek is aan die kleurgroep.

The trees that were chosen to represent each colour group are all indigenous to the Paarl region. The White team’s tree is the Waboom - this tree is a part of the Protea family and has a beautiful white flower. The Dark Blue team’s tree is the Kershout tree - a tree that has strong wood and that can grow under stressful conditions.

Die Ligteblouspan se boom is die Olienhoutboom. Hierdie boom is deel van die olyffamilie en is ‘n baie populêre boom in die Paarl omdat dit so droogtebestand is. Hierdie bome is almal geharde bome wat onder moeilike omstandighede kan groei en hulle hout het verskeie gebruike.

Die boomtema is gekies omdat dit so goed inpas met die skool se leuse Tandem Surculus Fit Arbor.

The trees were planted in the school garden by four special guests. The guests represented the current generation and past generation of Boishaai, as well as the staff and governing body of the school.

Mr Basson facilitated the ceremony and gave a very informative speech to all of the Grade 7s and staff present.

Hy behaal eerste plek in sy ouderdoms groep 0/8 kata afdeling. 15 deelnemers van regoor Suid Afrika het deelgeneem in hierdie afdeling. Hy het vier keer sy kata gedoen waarvan hy twee keer volpunte uit 5 gekry het en een keer 4 uit 5 en een keer 3 uit 5. Ons is baie trots op Jandre vir hierdie prestasie.

KarateLuanne du Plessis, ‘n Graad 4-leerling van Laerskool WA Joubert, het op Saterdag, 23 April aan die Overberg Goju Kai karatekompetisie deelgeneem en in die meisies 9 jaar oud ‘n eerste plek behaal.

Sy is ook in die Overberg-span opgeneem wat in Augustus aan die SA kampioenskappe gaan deelneem.

La Rochelle Old Girls still making headlinesOver the past few months we have received many updates on the whereabouts and achievements of our Old Girls. Sigrid Burger (Matric 2014) has always been an excellent Netball player. She is currently playing for the North West University’s 1st team and has been selected as a member of the University World Cup Team.

Twin sisters Lindi Prinslolo and Dedri Prinsloo (Matric 1993) are not only coaching tennis at La Rochelle, but are also representing South Africa at the Young Seniors 40+ Tennis World Championships in Croatia.

Tania D’Aguiar (Matric 1993) and her daughter Tonet Tallie (currently in Grade 8) are both accomplished karate fighters. They both won gold medals in their respective age groups at the Commonwealth Judo Championships in Port Elizabeth (Tonet in die Pre-Cadet age group and Tania in the Masters Division).

Gézelle Magerman (Matric 2015) achieved great heights in her athletics career while at La Rochelle and continues to do so after school. Last year she was awarded the title of 400m hurdles Youth World Champion.

Motivational speechAndronica Masipa, qualified speech therapist and sudiologist, spoke to our Grade 11 learners on Friday, 13 May on how to overcome hurdles and how to be successful. Her research was selected to be presented in Dublin, Ireland in October this year.

RugbyseisoenDie rugbyseisoen is in volle swang met goeie resultate teen SACS, Strand/Kasselsvlei en Rondebosch. Die Wildeklawer-toernooi en Framesbytoer was ook baie suksesvol.

Kaapjag Veldskiet 2016André Muller en Izak Hanekom was deel van Kaapse Jagters se Junior Span wat in Bloemfontein as die wenners gekroon is in die Junior Afdeling by Kaapjag Veldskiet 2016.

Hulle het die Suid-Kaap Jagters se Junior Span, wat die afgelope 8 jaar die wenners was, onttroon.

Hulle het ook verlede naweek in Calvinia deelgeneem waar André 1ste en Izak 2de plek behaal het.

SCHOOL SPORT RANKINGS

RugbyTwee weke terug het ons rugbyspanne teen Hoërskool Brackenfell op hul tuisveld gespeel en uitstekend presteer.

Van die tien wedstryde wat gespeel is, het Gimnasium in al tien geseëvier. Ons het altesaam 504 punte aangeteken en ‘n skrale 45 afgestaan. Dus ‘n gemiddelde telling van ongeveer 50 - 4 in Gim se guns. Hierdie jaar se o.14’s speel kookwaterrugby. Hulle is ook die groep wat geen punte afgestaan het nie.

Dan was daar ook die o.19C-span (Chippies) wat geen genade met die Brakkies gehad het nie en ‘n eindtelling van 97 - 6 behaal het!

Die eerstespan het ook die dag op ‘n hoë noot afgesluit met‘n oorwinning van 38 - 24. Die driedrukkers was Bryan Buitendag (2), Wian van Zyl, Henco Martins, Juvan Robinson en Sehan du Toit. Theo Boshoff het vier drieë verdoel.

Die volgende kragmeting is op Gim se tuisveld teen Bishops op 28 Mei.

SêrDie jaarlikse sêrkompetisie het hierdie jaar op Maandag, 16 Mei plaasgevind. Vier sêrgroepe het deelgeneem, naamlik Paarl Gimnasium se eie dogters- en seunsgroep, sowel as groepe van Paul Roos Gimnasium en La Rochelle.

Hierdie jaar se tema was “Make Love, Not War”, wat deur die dekor asook elke groep se optrede op verskillende kreatiewe maniere uitgebeeld is. Goeie optredes is deur al die groepe gelewer en die gehoor het dit baie geniet. Die seremoniemeester, lede van die Afrikaanse improvisasiegroep Skeer, het almal ook laat skater van die lag met hulle vindingryke opvoerings. Aan die einde van die aand het Paul Roos se seunsgroep en Gimnasium se meisiesgroep as wenners uit die stryd getree. Baie geluk aan al die deelnemers wat ure se oefening ingesit het – dit was voorwaar ’n spoggeleentheid.

Solis vir Christus-kompetisieNicole van Heerden en Megan Danner het vroeg in Mei aan die Solis vir Christus-kompetisie deelgeneem. Hulle was albei in die finaal wat uit sewe finaliste bestaan het en Megan het ‘n tweede plek behaal.

Solis vir Christus word deur Anthonie Bougas aangebied en kan Sondae om 16:00 op KykNet NOU (kanaal 146) gesien word.

SpringbokkapteinJanneke Schnetler (Gr. 12) wat opgeneem is in die SA o.18-skolenetbalspan wat vanaf 27 April tot 7 Mei aan ‘n toernooi in Auckland Nieu-Seeland gaan deelneem het, is ook verkies as kaptein van hierdie span. Trots op jou, Janneke!
