Product of the month - Cyclex Abrasive DiscsThis month’s product of the month is the revolutionary new technology of sanding disc, “Cyclex”.

For as long as sanding discs have been used in the repair process there has been a need to find the best technology available and with the Cyclex abrasive discs this has happened. Historically traditional sanding discs, when used in combination with a Dual Action (DA) machine, were renowned for creating dust. Ineffective dust extraction often caused health and safety problems and the clogging of the disc, which in turn affected performance levels; however, to overcome the problem dust extraction hoovers/sanders were introduced to the repair process and abrasive discs were punctured with holes.

Bodylines new ground breaking Cyclex discs have been created to improve the abrasive disc performance. With inspiration gained from nature and the Fibonacci sequence the special configuration of the holes on the Cyclex discs, which are arranged on opposing spirals such as are found on a sunflower, allows for incredible dust extraction; this enables the abrasive disc to keep cutting for longer. The unique backing pad is a vital part of the Cyclex system, as the arrangement maintains as much abrasive cutting surface as possible resulting in a higher abrasive performance; what’s more the total surface extraction format allows for maximum dust extraction.

A main feature of the Cyclex discs are that they are laser marked on the outside with the grade of the abrasive, this is a superior feature which enables you to instantly recognise what disc you are using, therefore helping to improve workforce efficiency and accuracy.

The Cyclex discs are available in the standard 150mm format and the ever increasingly popular 125mm.

In this month’s Bodytalk we are talking abrasives. Abrasives are the sanding material used for repairs and after paint, are the second biggest consumable used in the repair process; therefore it is vital to ensure that you use the correct abrasives and process for the repair. There are many different types of abrasive offers available in the marketplace and selecting the right system for your business is important. Dry sanding is now common place in car repairs and this adds many benefits against wet flatting, with one being its ability to keep repairs free and clean from contamination.

Good dust extraction is very important in keeping your working area healthy and dust free, what’s more dust extraction will also assist in making the abrasive last longer because it prevents clogging which in turn enables the abrasive to keep cutting.

Wherever possible a sanding machine should be used in the repair process as this helps with speed and efficiency. The best example of this is a DA sander, which stands for Dual Action. Random orbit sanders are also referred to as Dual-Action or D.A. First introduced in the early 1980s, random orbit sanders combine the speed and aggressiveness of a

belt sander with the ability to produce a finer finish than that available from a standard, slow speed orbital finishing sander.

The random orbit sanding pattern is produced by simultaneously spinning the sanding disk and moving it in an ellipse shape. This ensures that no single part of the abrasive material travels the same path twice. Because of this unique random sanding action, the tool does not leave swirl marks.

Having the correct amount of abrasive grades used in a repair process is also very important as it makes the process simple to follow and reduces stock holding. What’s more a way to reduce costs without compromising the performance and quality of the abrasive is to change the size of your DA discs. Standard practice involves using 150mm (6 inch) sanding discs however the most efficient size for car body repair is in fact 125mm (5 inch), and these are used by the majority of motor manufactures in the repair process. The 125mm discs work better on the latest shapes and contours of modern vehicles; they are also better at keeping the size of the repair smaller enabling you to reduce your preparation area. In addition as they are smaller they are cheaper to purchase!

There is also a new way of making your abrasives last, in a large workshop where there are numerous operatives using the same equipment there is a tendency to remove the abrasive from the sander before you start, however the abrasive may only have been utilized for 40% of its life span. If a sander is dedicated to one grade then the operative is likely to use the disc and make a decision of how it is cutting once it’s being used; this will ensure that every disc is fully utilized, and the cost of any additional equipment can be offset.
