1.0 Introduction.On24thMarch,1794,GeneralThaddeusKościuszkoproclaimedaninsurrectionagainstRussianoccupationontheMainSquareinKraków.ItwasveryclearthatsuccesscouldonlybegainediftheinsurrectioncouldengulfthewholeofPoland.ItwasvitaltospreaditintootherregionsoftheCommonwealthandtotakecontroloflargecities.Thefocus,botheconomicallyandpolitically,oftheplansfor the insurrectionwasWarsaw.Kościuszko, leaderandCommander-in-Chiefof the insurrection,planned tocaptureSkalbmierz,Pińczów,KielceandthenWarsaw.WhileKościuszkoacceptedthepossibilityofafieldbattle,hehopedtosurprisetheRussiansandtoforcethemtofightonfavourableterms;bycountingoninactiononthepartofPrussiaandAustria–hecouldconcentrateondefeatingtheoccupyingRussianforces.

On1stApril,Kościuszko’sPolishcolumn,some1,000bayonetsandsabers,withseven(7)artillerypieces,leftKrakówandarrivedinLuborzyca.StartingtheverynextdaytheirnumbersbegantogrowwiththearrivalofthefirstgroupunderthecommandofGeneral-MajorJosephZajączek.BrigadierJanLudwigMangetarrivedfromPińczówwiththe2nd(LesserPoland)NationalCavalryBrigade(BKN)whileColonelMaciejSzyrerledthe6thFootRegimentintocamp.ByApril3rd,thePolishforcehadgrownintoanarmyandreachedKoniusza,Hewasjoinedherebythe1st(GreaterPolish)NationalCavalryBrigade,ledbyGeneralAntoniMadaliński,whilegeneralmajorofproszowickiandksięskipoviatJanŚlaskibroughtintwothousandlocalmilitia.

Meanwhile,theRussianswereconcentratingtheirforces.GeneralTormasovwasalreadyinSkalbmierz,waitingforGeneralRachman-ov.OnApril2nd,General-MajorFyodorDenisovarrivedandtookcommandasorderedbyGeneralIgelström.ThisdecisiondeeplyoffendedGeneralTormasov,ashedespisedFyodorDenisovasa‘Don’,aformerDonCossack,havinggainedmostofhispromotionsthroughbraveryalone.OnApril3rd,theRussianscapturedaPolishemissaryandlearnedthatthePolisharmywasgatheringinKoni-usza.Afterabriefdeliberation,GeneralDenisovdecidedtodividehisforces.DuringthenightofApril3rd/4th,theRussiansleftSkalb-mierzintwocolumns.GeneralTormasovledtwobattalionsofinfantry,ninesquadronsofcavalry,sixsotniaofCossacksand12guns.HeplannedtofollowtheroutefromSkalbmierzthroughWiniary,RzędowiceandontoPrzesławice,whereheintendedtoformupandattackKościuszko’scampfromthenorth-west.Atthesametime,GeneralDenisovwiththemainRussiancolumn–fourandhalfbat-talionsofinfantry,threesquadrons,sixsotnia,andsixguns–wastofollowasecondaryroadtoProszowice,bypassthePolishpositionbymarchingalongtheroadleadingtoLuborzycaandattackfromthesouth.Unawareofhisenemy’sintentions,atdawnonApril4thKościuszkoleftKoniuszaandmarchedhisarmytoPrzesławiceandRzędowice.HeexpectedtofightabattleinthevicinityofWiniary.

Around6:30AM,askirmishoccurredclosetoImbramowicebetweenthePolishvanguardandsomeCossacksunderMajorAdrianDenisov,GeneralFyodor’snephew.Afterashortstrugglebothsideswithdrewbutnotwithouttakingcaptives.GeneralKościuszkonowcomprehendedthegravityofhissituationandbymeansofaforcedmarchhemovedhisarmynorthwardsalongtheSłomniki–Działoszyceroad.GeneralTormasovknewthathemustmovequicklytoblockKościuszko,inordertopreventtheescapeofthePolisharmy.CavalryskirmishingcontinuedintheareaofLelowice–Wrocimowice.Around10am,thePolisharmytookpositionnexttoDziemierzyce,whileGeneralTormasovblockedfurtherPolishmovementtothenorthbyoccupyingthehighgrounddominatingtheneighbourhoodofWzgórzaKościejowskie.GeneralKościuszkofoundhimselfcaughtinadilemma,sinceattackingtheRussiansonthehighgroundwaslikelytoprovefruitless.Ontheotherhand,retreatingwouldmakefurthermovementtoMazowszeimpossibleandwouldeventuallyallowtheRussianstocombinetheirforces.Evenworse,around1pm,acombinedRussiangrenadierbattalionunderthecommandofLieutenantColonelTomatisarrived.Inthissituation,thePolishCommander-in-Chiefdecidedtoofferadefensivebattle,withhisforcespostedbetweenDziemierzyceandJanowiczki.

TheBattle.AttheextremeleftofthePolisharmystoodthe2nd(LesserPoland)Na-tionalCavalryBrigade.Attheedgeofwoodsthereweretheshootersofthe2ndFootRegiment.Behindthem,wasalineofinfantryfromthe1stBattalion/2ndFootRegimentand2ndBattalion/3rdFootRegiment.ThePolishcentrewasoccupiedbythe1stBattalion/3rdFootRegimentand1stBattalion/6thRegiment.Justbehindthem,wasthe2ndBattalion/6thFootRegiment.GeneralKościuszko hid two thousand infantrywith scythesbehindahillinthevillageofDziemierzyce.GeneralTormasovcouldnotsee this unit, so he assumed that the Polish centrewasweaker than itactuallywas.Ontherightwing,stoodthe1st(GreaterPoland)NationalCavalryBrigadeandthe4thVanguardRegiment(Pulk).Herethecavalrywassupportedby infantrymenof the2ndBattalion/7thFootRegiment.ThePolishartillerywasplacedontherightwingandinthecentre,infrontof the infantry lines.GeneralTormasov could feel secure as he held agoodpositionandshouldhavewaitedforthearrivalofGeneralDenisov’scolumn.InsteadheoptedtodefeatthePolesbyhimself,sothathewouldnothavetosharetheglorywiththehatedDonCossack,GeneralDenisov.

GeneralTormasovclimbeddownfromhisobservationpostatWzgórzaKościejowskieanddividedhisavailableforces.The3rdJaegerbattalionwaspositionedontheRussianrightwingwiththreecavalrysquadrons,asotniaofCossacksandtwogunsunderthecommandofLieutenantColonelPustovalov.HewasgivenorderstooutflanktheenemypositionsonthePolishleftwing.TheremainingforcesunderGeneralTormasovweretoengagethePolishcentre.GeneralTormasovanticipatedthattheRussianleftwingwouldbereinforced

promptlybyGeneralDenisov,leavinghimonlyasupportingroleintheannihilationofthePolisharmy.Near4pmthemanoeuvringRussianunitsbecameatargetforthePolishartillery.Rapidandwell-aimedfireseemedtohalttheRussiansintheirtracks,forcingthemtosidleoffalittletotheside.GeneralTormasovthenattemptedtosilencethePolishgunsbyorderinghisownartillerytoopenfire,thusinitiatinganartilleryduel.Atthesametime,theRussiangunsfiredintothePolishleftwingtomakePustovalov’sflankingtaskeasier.RussianfirecreateddisarrayintheranksofthePolishcavalry.Madaliński’scavalrybrigaderushedintotaketheguns,butwashaltedbothbyheavyartilleryfireandthebraveryofMuromtsov’sdragoons.Inthemeantime,PustovalovarrivedclosetothePolishleftflank,appearing,almostmagicallyfromthenearbywoods.PustovalovorderedhisCossacksunderMajorAdrianDenisovtoattackthePolishrear.The2ndBKNfromLesserPolandturnedaboutandchargedbutwasmetbystiffresistancefromtheCossacks,whopromptlycountercharged.NowthePolishcavalrybegantowaver–somesoldiersevenarrivedinKrakówannouncingaPolishdefeat!Thegravesituationwasretrievedbychorąży(WarrantOfficer)IgnacyNeve.HissquadronhaltedtheCossacksandthenforcedthemtoflee,givingthePolishBrigadetimetorecover.GeneralKościuszkonowfollowedsuitandsupportedhishard-pressedleftwingwiththeMadaliński`cavalry.Onceagain,theyclashedwiththeRussiandragoonsofLieutenantColonelMuromtsov(whichthePolishcavalryhadfoughtbeforeontheotherwing).Thiscombatwasbrutalandwithoutmercy.ThePoleschargedthreetimes.Duringoneattempt,ViceBrigadierPortJaźwińskiwoundedMuromtsovandcapturedhim,whichcausedthemoraleoftheRussiandragoonstoplummet.Nevertheless,GeneralTormasovbelievedaRussianvictorywasstillpossibleonthePolishleftwingandsentinfreshreinforcements,consistingoftwojaegercompaniesunderBiałowski.GeneralKościuszkohadwaitedforjustthismoment.

Seeing,atfirst,enemydragoonsleavingtheRussiancentre,followedbyjaegers,GeneralKościuszkoorderedageneralassaultontheRussianguns.ItwasabiggambleasduskwasnowfallingandthecolumnsofGeneralDenisovwereseentobefastapproachingfromthedirectionofWrocimowice.Inthemiddleoftheassaultcolumnwere320scythe-men(kosnierzy).Ontheirflankstheyweresup-portedbytwocompaniesoflineinfantryfrom3rdand6thFootRegiments.Beforethetwoopposinglinesclashed,PolishartilleryfiredamagedoneRussiangunanddamagedtwoammunitionwagons.ThePolishassaultwassorapidthattheRussiangunswereonlyabletofiretwicebeforetheywereoverrun.Brutalhand-to-handcombatnowfollowed.Polishlongscythes,withbladessetupright,causedterriblewounds.TwogunswerecapturedbyWojciechBartoszGłowackifromRzędowiceandStanisławŚwistackifromZakrzów,athirdonecapturedbythechorążyofthe3rdRegiment,KrzysztofDębowski.Russiangrenadiersrushedtohelptheirartillerymen,butfacedvigorousresistancefromthePolishinfantryandRussianresistancequicklyfaltered.GeneralTormasovhadlosttheinitiative.Injustfifteenminutes,theRussiancentrewasdestroyed.RussianjaegerssenttoattackthePolishleftwingreturnedonlytowitnessforthemselves,thepowerofascytheasashockweapon.PolishlineinfantryaccompaniedbyGeneralKościuszko’scavalryvolunteersnowpursuedtheRussiantroopsfleeingindisarray.

Despitethissuccess,thePolishCommander-in-Chiefwasstilluncertainofvictory.Hepersonallyledhalfabattalionofinfantryandscytheinfantrytoattackontheleftwing.Kościuszko’sattackwaspre-emptedbyMajorLucke,wholedcompaniesofIBattalion/2ndRegimentinanaudaciousattackonPustovalov`sjaegers.Thewell-drilledRussiansmanagedtoformsquareandtriedtowithdrawfromthebattlefield,buttheirattempttoescapewaspreventedbythePolishscythe-armedinfantrywhoshatteredtheentireIIIJaegerBattalion.Afterthisonslaught,onlytheRussiancavalryunitswereabletosavethemselves,shamefullyleavingtheirinfantrycom-radesbehind.GeneralDenisov,whoarrivedafter6pm,restrictedhisforcetofiringafewartilleryshellsandforminginfantrysquares.Around8pm,GeneralDenisovwithdrewtoKazimierzaWielka.HedecidednottoengagethefatiguedPolishsoldiersbecausenightwasswiftlyfallingandhissoldiershadlostheartafterseeingthefateoftheircomradescommandedbyGeneralTormasov.

TheBattleofRacławicewasnotanoperationalvictoryforthePolisharmy,asGeneralKościuszkowasunabletoclearthewaytoWarsaw,forcinghimtoreturntoKraków.Ontheotherhand,thevictoryraisedPolishhopesforasuccessanditquickenedthepaceofrevoltinthePolishcapital(17/18thofApril1794).ThisparticularbattlebecameasymbolofthestruggleofthewholePolishnationagainstenemyoccupation.TheregularPolishinfantryhadprovedtheirmettlebuttheysharedtheirglorywiththepeasantmilitia.Fromamilitaryviewpoint,thebattlewasquiteinnovative.GeneralKościuszkousedamassinfantryformationinattackandmanagedtosurpriseGeneralTormasov,whohademployedlineartacticstogetherwithaflankingmanoeuvre.OneshouldalsomentiontheskilfuluseofcavalryinguardingflanksandtheeffectivedrillofthePolishartillerywhowereabletohaltRussianattacks.

Theboardgamethatyouhavejustopenedwillenableyoutore-enactthefamousBattleofRacławiceonatable.ItshouldbeeasytoassumetheroleofGeneralKościuszko,GeneralTormasovorevenarank-and-filesoldierandrelivetheatmosphereofthattenseafter-noononApril4th1794.Wewishyougoodfun!

[2.1].GameScale.Oneturnrepresents10minutesoftherealtime.Onehexofthemaprepresentsareaofapproxi-mately100meters.Counters depict threekindsof units,dominatingthebattlefieldofthatera-infantry,cavalryandartillery.Infantryunitsareorganizedintocompanies,cav-alryinsquadrons.Oneartillerycounterrepresentsone(1)gun.Onestrengthpointequals15soldiers.[2.2].Inthegameof“Raclawice1794”,allrandomeventsaredecidedbya ten-sideddie.Resultsof “0” shouldbetreatedas“0”,not“10”.

3.0 Gameplay.[3.1].Playersshouldagreeonwhowillleadwhichside-therearetwoarmies:PolishandRussian.Beforebeginningthegame,unitsshouldbesetuponthehexesdesignatedbythescenarioset-upinsidetherulebook.Activationmar-kers(thosewithaquestionmark)aretobeputinanopa-quecontainer,likeacup,whichwillserveasanActivationPool.[3.2].Toassistplayers,thegameitselfisdividedintofifte-en(15)GameTurns.EachTurnconsistsofseveralroundsduringwhichplayersexecutecertainactions.Whenallde-scribedactionsarecompleted,the“Etapgry”markerneedstobemovedontothenextspaceonturntrack.Thegameisfinished,eitherattheendofthe15thGameTurnorifoneoftheplayersfulfillstheconditionsofautomaticvictoryatanypointduringthegame.[3.3].EachGameTurnconsistsof thefollowingactions:Round 1: Both players place their Overall Commanderandtwosubordinatecommanderchits,oftheirchoice,intotheActivationPool(opaquecup).Theremainingcomman-dercountersaretoberetainedbytheirrespectiveownersandkepthiddenfromtheotherplayer.Round 2:EitherplayerdrawsaCommanderchitfromtheActivationPoolandperformstheactionsdescribedbelowinPhasesOnethroughFive.Note:Playerscandecideforthemselveswhodrawsfirst.Phase1.CommanderActivation.Phase2.The“ActivatedCommander”maynowmoveanyandallunitsbelongingtohisformation.Duringthisphase,rangedfirecombat,chargesandcounter-chargesmayalsobeconducted.Phase3.MovementoftheActivatedCommander.Phase4.ResolutionofMeleeCombat.Phase5.Ifany“ActivationChits”remainwithintheActi-vationPool,playreturnstoRound2.OncetheActivation

[4.2].AunitisconsideredasInCommandifitislocatedwithin four (4) hexesofitscommander.ItistheneligibletoperformactionsinPhases2and4.[4.3]. Ifacommander iseliminated,units fromhiscom-mandarenowunderthecontroloftheOverallComman-der.Insuchcases,theOverallCommander(OC)losestheabilitytoactivateanyothercommander(see[4.4])andhastocommandtheunitsofthefallencommander.Iftwoormore commanders are eliminated, duringOC activation,the player has to decide ([4.2] applies here)which unitshewillcommandinthisactivation.Itisforbiddentocom-mandunitsfromdifferentCommands.IncaseofTormasov`deaths,histwojagercompaniesandcossack“sotnia”remainOutofCommanduntiltheendofgame.[4.4]. Poolisempty,proceedtoRound3.Round 3.Victoryconditionscheck.Ifanyvictorycondi-tionswerefulfilledbyeitheroneoftheplayers,thegameends.AGameTurnisfinishedwhentherearenomoremarkersremaininginthe,current,ActivationPool;theGameTurn(“Etapgry”)markeristhenmovedontothenextspaceontheturnrecordtrack.ThesequenceofplaynowreturnstotheRound1segment.[3.4].Definitionsusedintherulebook:Unit identifier–Aunits’designation,withinthehistoricorganizationofthegivenarmy.Morale – The number on the counter representing thetrainingandmotivationoftheunit.Thehigherthemorale,thebetterthatunitis.Moralecanbeloweredduetolosses.Strength –The number on the counter designating howmany soldiers were present in that unit. Some units inthisgamearerepresentedbytwo,oreventhree,counters.These “spare” counters represent successive losses suf-feredbytheoriginalunit(markedwithaone[1]).Whentheoriginalunitsuffersaloss,“flip”itovertoitsweakerside, if itsuffersanother loss,replaceitwiththecountermarked“2”(faceup),whenthatcountersuffersaloss,flipit over to itsweaker side.Any further lossesmaymeantheendof thatuniton thebattlefield,but if it has a “3”replacementcounter,placethatonthemapboardanduseasbeforeuntil/ifitisremoved,duetolosses.Note: Most “step” losses represent the loss of two (2)strengthpoints.Example: 1/Kosynier begins the game with the size/strength of “9”. This particular unit is represented by two (2) counters, which together have four varying size levels.Firepower–The ratingon thecounter representingunitcapabilitiesinranged(fire)combat.Thisisnotalwaysitisequaltotheunitsize,becausenoteverysoldierintheunithadarifle.Modifier–thenumberdeductedoraddedtotheresultofdieroll.Morale Check.Theplayerneedstorolladieandcalculatethefinalresultusingapplicablemodifiers.IfthefinalresultislesserorequalthanMoralerating,testwaspassed.Artil-leryandcommandersdonothavetomakeMoraleCheck.Note:Itispossibleforbothplayerstocheckmoraleduringaphase.Ifthisoccurs,playersrollfortheirownunits.Movement Points–arearepresentationofaunits’abilitytomove(see[8.0]).Melee hex–ahexinwhichunitsfrombothsidesarepres-ent.Fractions.Whencalculationsarenecessary to thegame,fractions should be rounded as follows: Fractions from0.01to0.49areroundeddown-from0.5theyareroundedup.

4.0 Commanders.[4.1]. The color-coded strips on unit counters designatewhichcommandercancommandagivenunit. Ifaunits’colorcodingisdifferentfromaCommanders’,thatCom-mandermaynotgiveorderstothatunit.

[6.7].OnlythetopunitofastackcanbethetargetofRifleFire.[6.8].AllunitsinatargetedhexmustresolveArtilleryFireaffects,separately.Example 1: 1/I/3 pp 4/I/3 pp and 3/II/3 pp are stacked toge-ther. Artillery Fire results in 1M. Each unit, therefore, has to test its own morale, individually.Example 2: The same units participate in Melee Com-bat and are victorious. However, they suffer one loss and owning player has to decide which unit will suffer the loss of the one (1) SP.[6.9].Unitsofbothsidescanbeinthesamehex.Enteringahexoccupiedbyanenemyunit(s)willcostoneadditionalMovementPoint(1MP).[6.10].AllunitsretaintheirformationandfacingwithinaMeleehex(seeexception-[7.1]).Neitherplayercansur-passthestackinglimits,asper[6.2].[6.11].ExitingfromaMeleehexispossibleonlyasaresultofMeleeresolution(see[11.0]).

7.0 Formations.In“Raclawice1794”unitsareusually formed into lines.In some cases though, it is possible to use different for-mations.[7.1]. It is forbidden to change formation in aMelee hex.Theexceptionsare:-Re-forminginto“SkirmishOrder”duetosustainedlosses(See[7.2])-Formingasquareduringacavalrycharge(see[7.3]).

[7.2]. Skirmish Order. Skirmishordercanbeused by Polish shooters and Russian jaegers.Other units automatically assume “SkirmishOrder” after their strength falls to 2 or less.AfterassumingSkirmishOrderandpayingone

The Russian unit has to pass a Morale Check but to the die roll the player has to add one (+1).

There is visibility between the Russian cavalry squad-ron and the Polish ”kosynierzy” unit.

[10.2]. Line of Sight (LOS) is the line connecting thepoints in the middle of two hexes. One hex containsthe “target” unit; the other contains the (opposing si-des’) firing unit. LOS exists when there is visibili-ty (measured through the frontal zone of a firing unit).Exception:Units in skirmish order formation (see [7.2],above)alsohaveanLOSextendingthroughtheirflankzo-nes.[10.3].RangedcombatispossibleonlywhenanLOScanbe tracedbetween twoopposinghexeswithnoblockingterrainorunitsbetweenthem.[10.4].
