President’s MessageEditorial

As early as December 2008, when I was planning my Rotary Year, what I appreciate most are my Advisors, all the Past Presidents, my Board of Directors, my Board appointees, the chairmen and fellow Pudu Rotarians. I must proudly salute all of you, as all of you are great teachers to me. Many came forth to give encouragement, many came forth with open arms to serve willingly and unconditionally, and many took upon themselves to plan significant projects during the 6 months of preparation. Some even extended their strong shoulders to me to lean on during time of crisis.

With this, I learn now, all of you are special teachers - people who not only taught me but inspired me in ways that changed my rotary life. William Arthur Ward once said, “The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.”

Here are five life-changing values inspired by all of my unforgettable teachers. The Teachers I Will Always Remember...

... Taught the Value of Learning and Knowledge They were enthusiastic about their subject. However, they gave more than knowledge. They showed how learning could enhance creativity, spark interests, and uncover talents. They instilled in students a curiosity to learn and an undying passion to keep learning.

... Taught the Value of RespectThey treated others with honor. They explained how kind words, and sometimes silence, could prevent hurtful confrontations and turn enemies into friends. They taught the value of respect for the community as well as the individual.

... Taught the Value of IntegrityThey demonstrated empathy for those who were ill or suffering from personal loss. They would go the extra mile to offer support. Their ethics inspired students to live with courage and approach life with honesty, dignity, and self-worth.

... Taught the Value of ResponsibilityThey taught that personal actions have consequences and that the individual must be accountable for his or her choices. They emphasized that when people think others are to blame for problems, that very thought is the real problem. They taught that each student was ultimately responsible for his or her learning and its impact on their future.

... Taught the Value of PerseveranceThey taught that education continues until our last breath. They told stories about the hard times they had faced, and how God had often turned difficulties into blessings. They refused to let students quit after repeated failures. They demonstrated that “Faith is the assurance of things not yet seen.”

Not all of you are taught in formal classrooms. Nor did you all have a formal education. Some of you are still teaching, and the education you provide is priceless. I strongly believe that the greatest gifts we can give to our newer Pudu Rotarians are the same kind of values these teachers demonstrate. Then the newer Pudu Rotarians can also become unforgettable teachers, sharing values that will inspire happiness and faith for future generations.

“The Future of Pudu Rotary Is in Your Hands”.

Robin TayPresident RY 2009/10

THE FUTURE OF ROTARY IS IN YOUR HANDS

After having studied the Rotary theme for RY 2009/10, it begins to make sense that the future of Rotary is in our members hands, more so for RC Pudu.

As one can see as in most clubs and ours as well, 80% of the work has been carried out by 20% of the members. What one may ask is what about the rest of the members, what are their contribution. Your guess is as good as mine. This happens in all other clubs and I do not know whether the rest of the world has this problem or not. The sad part is, it happens every year. How sad but true.

If this trend is going to continue,( I am sure it will), then the future of all Rotary clubs will not be good. Then who is to be blamed?

Maybe the leadership of the club can pull all the members together to play a more active role by contributing in which ever way possible. That’s why the projects to be implemented must be exciting enough for everyone to play a part and the leadership of the club must constantly update and encourage all the more quieter ones to contribute. This role could be a full time job but nevertheless it will definitely help in making sure Rotary continue to thrive and provide community service to the less fortunate.

thoughts collide, and it’s like you have been good friends for decades.”

Oni’s service to Rotary is impressive. He received The Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service < http://www.rotary.org/en/Members/GeneralInformation/Awards/Pages/AwardsforRotarians.aspx> in 1993, the RI Service Above Self Award in 1995, and the Foundation’s Distinguished Service Award in 1996.

Over dinner, he talked about the leprosy project his club sponsored with the help of a club in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Urbye listened enthusiastically as Oni shared details of his club’s literacy project with a district in Illinois, USA, to provide books for the University of Nigeria.

“He is really quite amazing,” said Urbye. “I can see why he has been given some of the highest awards.”

Oni has already signed up for the 2010 RI Convention in Montréal, Québec, Canada. It will be his 16th convention. Urbye said she plans to attend too, even though as an independent business owner, she doesn’t have a lot of extra cash.

“I am not a rich woman. I work hard for my money. But this is my one trip of the year,” she said. “It is well worth it.”

Farrow speaks out on polio, Darfur By Arnold R. Grahl

Actress and UNICEF goodwill ambassador Mia Farrow said she understands the devastation of polio and the importance of eradicating the virus. Farrow survived polio as a child and adopted a son from India who had contracted the disease.

“Polio is a terrible, terrible disease. We are right to be pushing for the end of it,” Farrow said during the third plenary session of the 2009 RI Convention on 23 June. “We are almost there, we just have to push a little further.”

She focused the second half of her address on promoting the health and safety of children -- a message that dovetails with RI President Dong Kurn Lee’s emphasis on reducing child mortality -- and the need to protect the people of Darfur, Sudan.

She recounted how in 2004 a woman in Darfur gave her a protective amulet to wear around her neck and asked her to tell the world about what was happening there. The woman said, “Please go out and tell the world. Tell them we will all be slaughtered.” Farrow said meeting that woman changed her life. “That’s the whole of what I do now. I try to fulfill my promise.”

Toward that promise, Farrow showed Rotarians slide after slide of victims of the atrocities in Darfur -- men who had had their eyes cut out by marauders; a woman who had been shot through the back, which killed the child she was carrying; an infant dying of malnutrition; and entire villages burned to the ground.

“After six years, what message have we sent to Darfur?” Farrow asked. “Only that they are dispensable. If we look back and realize we failed the people of Darfur, we will not only have failed them, but we will have failed ourselves.”

In a press conference after the plenary session, Farrow said it will take the will of the people to move governments to act. “There is undeniably genocide that has occurred and will occur,” she said. “The defining moment for all of us is what are we going to do about it?”

Farrow talked about the good work of Rotarians and how they are an amazing group of people who are capable of doing whatever they set their mind to accomplishing.

She urged Rotarians not to give up fighting against polio. “Yes, it costs money,” she said. “But we won’t have to do that once we have eradicated polio <http://www.rotary.org/en/ServiceAndFellowship/Polio/Pages/ridefault.aspx> . Then all that money can go to something else.

“I do think Rotarians are unusual in that they are so galvanized to action,” she said. “All of them are committed to helping other people, and they are able to galvanize other people to help.

“I love Rotary,” she added. “It is the best thing that has ever happened.

SPEAKERS TEXT

I am indeed honoured and privilege to have the opportunity to be the President of the most active and vibrant Rotary Club in the District. It was a year ago that my BOD and I took office and gave our plan and projects for RY 2008/2009. The journey we undertook has been one which has not been without challenges. However, we were fortunate that we have the full support and guidance of the members. RC Pudu steeped in its tradition and structured guidelines ensure continuity of the Clubs principles and objectives.

My one year tenure has given me an opportunity to give something back to community. It has helped me to be resilient in making decisions and to be sensitive in actions. It has strengthened my belief in Rotary as an organisation dedicated to serving the community. I am humbled by its magnanimous and untiring efforts in its humanity effortsespecially in the area of eradication of Polio.

Klinginsmith elected RI president for 2010-11 By Joseph Derr

Ray Klinginsmith, of the Rotary Club of Kirksville, Missouri, USA, was elected as president of Rotary International for 2010-11 by delegates during the fourth plenary session at the 2009 RI Convention in Birmingham, England. Klinginsmith thanked the audience, saying that his election completed a long Rotary journey of nearly 50 years that began with a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship <http://www.rotary.org/en/StudentsAndYouth/EducationalPrograms/AmbassadorialScholarships/Pages/ridefault.aspx> .

“Thank you for permitting me to complete a circle in my Rotary life. It was 25 years ago, in this very building, that the delegates to the 1984 convention elected me as an RI director,” said Klinginsmith. “That election in 1984 permitted me to become the youngest director on the RI Board as a result of my early exposure to Rotary as a college student, because I was a Rotary Scholar.”

Klinginsmith said that when the RI Convention is convened in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, in 2011, it will be the 50th anniversary of his “monthlong trip that lasted a lifetime.”

Awarded a scholarship to study at the University of Cape Town, Klinginsmith said he was the first student from his community to study abroad. He told the audience how he embarked on his journey on a ship that sailed from New Orleans to Cape Town, where he made friends and was first exposed to the transformative power of Rotary.

“I had the good fortune to travel 16,000 miles in Africa and to visit 35 Rotary clubs in four different countries, and therefore, I am pleased to stand here today as a product of The Rotary Foundation,” Klinginsmith said.

The Rotarians who will serve as 2010-12 RI directors were declared elected at the plenary session. They are Noel A. Bajat, of the Rotary Club of Abbeville, Louisiana, USA; Elio Cerini, of the Rotary Club of Milano Duomo, Italy; Kenneth W. Grabeau, of the Rotary Club of Nashua West, New Hampshire, USA; Stuart B. Heal, of the Rotary Club of Cromwell, New Zealand; Masaomi Kondo, of the Rotary Club of Senri, Osaka, Japan; Barry Matheson, of the Rotary Club of Jessheim, Norway; Samuel F. Owori, of the Rotary Club of Kampala, Uganda; and John C. Smarge, of the Rotary Club of Naples, Florida, USA.

RI General Secretary Ed Futa also declared elected the nominees for district governor in 2010-11 and announced the officers for Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland in 2009-10.

Rotarians from different continents rekindle friendship By Arnold R. Grahl

O.A. Oni (left) and Astrid Urbye are rekindling their friendship in Birmingham, England, after meeting at the 2008 RI Convention in Los Angeles. Rotary Images/Monika Lozinska-Lee

Astrid Urbye’s feet were killing her when she took a seat on a bench next to O.A. Oni at the 2008 RI Convention in Los Angeles.

The two, both Rotarians, struck up a conversation and chatted for 15 minutes before going their separate ways. Urbye, of Norway, and Oni, of Nigeria, kept in contact over e-mail throughout the year.

When Urbye arrived at this year’s convention in Birmingham, England, she began to look for Oni, even though they had made no formal plans to meet. They eventually ran into each other and quickly made plans to rekindle their friendship over dinner Monday night in downtown Birmingham.

“This is what Rotary can lead to,” said Urbye, a theatrical agent and member of the Rotary Club of Drøbak. “It is about building bridges and leading the way.”

“Rotary is a melting pot,” agreed Oni, medical director of the Clinic on the Hill in New Bodija and a member of the Rotary Club of Ibadan-West, Oyo State. “In Rotary, you can approach a person and know right away that you have something in common. Immediately, you blend in and your

FROM PP MICHAEL TUNG..... Thoughts on FRIENDSHIP &FELLOWSHIP!

There are some things we can’t BUY in Rotary:The WARM FELLOWSHIP of a fellow Rotarian. The SINCERE FRIENDSHIP of a fellow Rotarian. The CARING EMBRACE of a fellow Rotarian.

Birmingham embraces historic convention By Arnold R. Grahl

After four days of celebrating Rotary’s spirit of international fellowship and service, Rotarians from all over the world bid adieu to the 100th RI Convention in Birmingham, England, on 24 June.

RI President-elect John Kenny, the first Scotsman to head the international humanitarian service organization in its 104-year history, encouraged the more than 16,000 Rotarians from over 150 countries at the convention to join in the last push to eradicate polio <http://www. rotary.org/en/ServiceAndFellowship/Polio/Pages/ridefault.aspx> .

“Until the day the earth is declared polio-free, this work must be our first priority and our main focus,” Kenny said during the closing plenary session. “It is up to us to finish the job.”

Kenny, a member of the Rotary Club of Grangemouth, has emphasized the important role that individual Rotarians and Rotary clubs play in the future of the organization, a message captured in the 2009-10 RI theme, The Future of Rotary Is in Your Hands.

“The future of Rotary is being decided every day, in every one of our clubs -- by every one of you,” Kenny said. “Every Rotarian adds fresh ideas and energies to their clubs and their districts. Each one of you can make important contributions and pass on to your successors stronger clubs, healthier communities, and a better world.”

Throughout the week, Rotarians, friends, and other members of the family of Rotary heard prominent speakers discussing how close the world is to eradicating polio, and

encouraging Rotarians to make that last push to get the job done.

During the keynote address at the Rotary World Peace Symposium, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu said Rotary has earned the world’s respect. “When they started out saying they wanted to eradicate polio, a lot of people said you ought to have your head read,” he said. “Now there are only four countries where polio is endemic. This is fantastic. It is going to happen, and it is fantastic.” (Read more and see the video. <http://www.rotary.org/en/MediaAndNews/News/Pages/conv18june09tutu.aspx>

During the Rotary Alumni Celebration, Jean-François Rischard, who recently retired as World Bank vice president for Europe, suggested that Rotarians can help influence top policymakers to bring necessary change to the world. (Read more <http://www.rotary.org/en/MediaAndNews/News/Pages/conv09june20_rischard.aspx> .)

At a special appearance at the opening plenary session, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called Rotary the heart and soul of the worldwide polio eradication effort and pledged the UN’s continued cooperation and support. Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation gave Ban the Polio Eradication Champion Award, which he dedicated to three polio workers who were killed by a suicide bomb attack in Afghanistan in 2008. (Read more and see the video <http://www.rotary.org/en/MediaAndNews/News/Pages/conv09june21_opening_plenary.aspx> .)

Actress and UNICEF goodwill ambassador Mia Farrow, who delivered a keynote address during the third plenary session, told Rotarians that they are almost there and to push just a little further. “Polio is a terrible, terrible disease. We are right to be pushing for the end of it,” she said. (Read more and see the video <http://www.rotary.org/en/MediaAndNews/News/Pages/conv09june23_plenary3.aspx> .)

During the fourth plenary session, primatologist and humanitarian Dr. Jane Goodall stressed the goals that her organization shares with Rotary and called for increased collaboration. “We need to join together, to work as a team,” she said. (Read more <http://www.rotary.org/en/MediaAndNews/News/Pages/conv09june24_plenary4.aspx> .)

Jan Egeland<http:/ /www.rotary.org/en/MediaAndNews/News/Pages/conv09june19_janegeland.aspx> , director of the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs, told Rotary World Peace Fellows that he feels optimistic knowing that a new generation of peacemakers coming out of Rotary’s programs will have unparalleled knowledge, technology, and training to do much-needed work.

And Clarissa Brocklehurs<http://www.rotary.org/en/MediaAndNews/News/Pages/conv09june22_plenary2.aspx> t, UNICEF’s chief of water, sanitation, and hygiene, spoke about the urgent need for collaborative efforts to ensure access to clean water and improved sanitation around the world.

Throughout the convention, Rotarians enjoyed fellowship and learned more about club service projects and

ON FELLOWSHIP: “Fellowship is wonderful, it illuminates life’s pathway, spreads good cheer and is worth a high price.”

ON FRIENDSHIP: “Friendship was the foundation rock, on which Rotary was built and tolerance is the element which holds it together.”

ON BUSINESS: “In the Rotary plan, business is an important part of life but is not all of life. He whose vision extends no further than his field of business is to be pitied.”

ON PEACE: “I have no hesitation in saying that world peace could be achieved and made permanent if reared on Rotary’s firm foundation on friendliness, tolerance, and usefulness.

ON ‘ROTARY DEMOCRACY’: “The democratic spirit is the very life spark of Rotary. Rotary must never be permitted to become merely a rich man’s club. With the democracy of our organisation kept pure, we may hope to attain hitherto undreamed of heights in the elevation of business standards.”

ON MORAL VALUES: “Sacrifice, devotion, honour, truth, sincerity, love – these are homely virtues characteristic of old fashioned homes.

MY FELLOW ROTARIANS

It is traditional in Rotary that each Rotary International president is given the opportunity every month to write a message to all Rotarians in the pages of this magazine. I am grateful for this tradition, which gives me the opportunity to communicate with every one of you directly, for it is my firm belief that The Future of Rotary Is in Your Hands.

It is a great honor to have been chosen as the first RI president from Scotland in the 104 years of this organization, and to have the privilege of serving the Rotarians of the world. Because there is no RI – no Board of Directors or president, no world headquarters or Rotary conventions – without the ordinary weekly meeting of Rotarians in our own home clubs.

In Rotary, everything we are, and everything we aspire to become, lies in the hands of Rotarians in their clubs. If our clubs are congenial and our meetings well run, if our service is carefully planned and competently carried out, if

our members are qualified, honest, and respected in their vocations and communities, then all of Rotary will thrive. This is why I say The Future of Rotary Is in Your Hands.

Water, health and hunger, and literacy will be our emphases in the year ahead. In this Rotary year, I ask Rotarians everywhere to continue to learn from our experiences and to build upon our successes. I ask you all to continue to work for the health and well-being of not only children but their families and people everywhere. I ask you particularly to focus on water and sanitation, as the scarcity of clean water is an increasingly serious issue in many parts of the world.

In Scotland, we have a saying that I’m fond of quoting: “We must look beyond out own parish pump.” It means that we must look beyond our own home and our own community. We must be aware that ours is only one community, of one country, of the many communities and countries in this world.

In every one of those communities, there is work to be done. As Rotarians, we will not stand idly by. As Rotarians, we will accept our responsibility. We can, and we must. For we know that Rotary is only as great as its clubs – and our clubs are only as great as the members within them.

The Future of Rotary Is in Your Hands.

President Michael Yeow had his early education at the Cochrane Road Secondary School and was born in 1959. Joined Rotary Club of Pudu in 1992 and was proposed by PP Dato Lee Hoo Teong. Served in the club in many various positions and became its President in RY 2008/09 with the RI Theme of Make Dreams real.

As attendees entered the convention center, they had a chance to take part in a fundraiser to raise money for polio eradication, donating ₤5 (about US$8) to pull a sticker off a large display, gradually revealing the Make Dreams Real logo, and sign their names on a panel.

Grahl
