ReportSpecificationThefollowingreportistheresultofadesignprocessthatisexperimentalforIDDS.DrawingfromTheTimelessWayofBuildingbyChristopherAlexander,ThePathofLeast Resistance by Robert Fritz, Edible Forest Gardens by Dave Jacke and EricToensmeier, Holistic Management by Allan Savory, the Collaborative EcologicalDesignProcessusedatIDDSAmazonintheyearleadinguptothesummitandthatisongoingwithourcommunitypartners,isawayforprojectstorelateandconnecttothebroadercommunityandecosystemtheynourishandarenourishedby.Themaindifferencebetweenthisreportandother IDDSreports is in theoptionalTechnology/Final Prototype section.Becauseof thediversityofoutcomesof theprocessthemoregeneraltitleofPrototypesandOutcomeswasused.Other differences are the Project Goal Statementwhich has replaced the ProblemFramingStatementintheContextsectionandthesubstitutionofaProblemFramingTreewitha"ProjectFrame."ThereasonforthesesubstitutionsisthatinEcologicalDesignProcessproblemsareseen as arising from systemic issues, andwithout addressing themat the level ofsystemsafocusontheproblematbestcanleavetherootcauseunresolvedandatworstcancreatemoreproblemsthanitsolves.Another useful distinction is that when referring to the process of designing anecosystem for a client 'Ecological Design Process' is used. When referring to theprocessusedat IDDSAmazonandotherteameffortsusingthisprocess, theword,'Collaborative'isaddedasadistinction.Other important resources used in the creation of the summit curriculum, theframing of the projects, as well as the IDDS Amazonworkbook are RegenerativeEnterprise by Ethan Roland and Gregory Landua, Carol Sanford's definition ofRegenerativeBusiness,andDaveHolmgren'sPermaculturePrinciplesandPathwaysBeyondSustainability.

ContextTheyearlongengagementwiththecommunityofBoaVistadoAcaráleadinguptoIDDS Amazon mainly revolved around understanding the needs and desires ofcommunity members, mainly the Association of Organic Producers of Boa Vista(APOBV.) The workshops held in the months before the summit were prototypeevents,testingoutworkingonprojectstogetherandaddressingconcernsrelatedtothe summit. The projects for the summitwere projects articulated in communitymeetings and the Collaborative Ecological Design Process (CEDP) Project wasformedtodeepentheconversationwithcommunitymembers,toformconnectionsbetweenprojectsinthebroaderdesignprocessthecommunityhasengagedinandwill continue to pursue with some of the summit organizing team for projectcontinuity.Of the phases of Ecological Design Process: Goals Articulation and Site Analysis(whichparallelInformationandInsightintheIDDSdesigncycle)Design(IdeasandApproaches) and Implementation and Evaluation, the Collaborative EcologicalDesign Process Team focused their efforts in the phase of Goals Articulation, theactionswhichwerecarriedoutandimplementedwereverymuchaboutintegratingthebroadercommunityinaconversationaboutneedsandvisioningforthefuture.The Community of Boa Vista do Acará reflects back to us some of the dynamicaspectsof internationaldevelopment.Manypeopleheremight fit thedefinitionofpovertyintermsofdollarsaday,howeverthisisacommunitythatisstrong,wherebasic needs of survival are well met. And so the community members that havewelcomedus into theirmidstwithopenarmshavebeen throughout thisprocess,during the summit and to this day a clear mirror, that in a place where theecosystemandcommunity(whicharetrulyquiteinseparablefromeachother)arestrong,activitiesgearedto thecreationof financialwealthmayendup liquidatinglivingecosystemintogoods,orliquidatecommunityrelationshipsintoservices.Thisproject enlisted the help of participants to cocreating a systems approach inguardingagainstthepotentiallyhazardeffectsofdevelopmentbyencouraginggainsindiverseformsofcapital,notjustfinancial.ProjectGoalsArticulationThe CEDP team engages the community members of Boa Vista do Acará andspecificallyAPOBVmemberstoarticulateneedsanddesires,creatingprojectsandconnectionsforprojects,includingtheIDDSAmazonDesignProjects,basedontheirvisionsforthefuture.

DesignProcessandFrameEcologicalDesignProcessasexpressedbyDaveJackeandEricToensmeierinEdibleForest Gardens consists of five interrelated and reiterating phases throughwhichonemoves innonlinear fashion.Thesephasesverymuchparallel the IDDSdesigncycle, the main difference is the shift from a reactive and responsive focus onproblems, to working creatively towards a vision. In general terms our projectframecanbeseenastheidealizedBoaVistaofthefuturethatourpartnerswanttocreate and leave for their children. That massive frame encompasses theCollaborative Ecological Design Process APOBV is engaging in, in particular thecreation of a cooperative to better frame the productive and specifically moneymaking activities of the associates, which fall beyond the nonprofit activities ofAPOBV. Those two frames and the space between them holds the frames of theprojectsstartedatIDDSAmazon.

During the twoweeks of the summit the CEDP team focusedmainly on speakingwith people of the community. We documented the needs we were hearingexpressed.Wealsoaskedaboutthefutureofthecommunityandwhattheirhopesare.Basedon someof the concernsweheardwealsodesignedand implementedsomeactions,whicharedescribedinthefollowingsection.

PrototypesandOutcomes1.BoaVistaPatternLanguageA pattern language is a compilation of relationships between elements and theircontext. Eachoneof thepatternsor relationshipsusually addresses aproblemordescribesawayaneedgetsmet.Apattern language is like thekitofparts inanylargedesignproject.Itisanevolvingtoolthatisputintothehandsofacommunityso that it can be adapted and used for bringing about a desired future reality.Pattern Languages are a tool now used from City and Regional Planning toComputingandNetworks.ThePatternLanguageemergingfromthisprojectwillbecomeatoolforthepeopleofBoaVistadoAcaráandwillserveasanexampleforothercommunities.Someofthe patterns are being adapted from other resources. 2.NeedsInventory,DesignRequirementsandConnectionsforProjectsInPathofLeastResistance,RobertFritzpointsoutthatinthetransitiontowardsaproactiveandcreativeapproachtodesign,itisimportanttogetbasicneedsmetassoonaspossible,sothatpeopleareatlibertytodothingsbecausetheywantto,andnotbecausetheyhaveto.MarshallRosenberg'sworkonNonviolentCommunicationalsosupports thisnotion.Fromthebeginningof theorganizing team's interactionwith people at the Association the dialogue was about needs, and most of theprojectswere born from those conversations. The three questions that the CEDPteamaskedwere,What inyourviewarethemosturgentneeds?WhatdoyouloveaboutBoaVistadoAcará?andWhatareyourvisionsforthefuture?Thefollowing graphic is a work in progress at organizing and cataloguing people'sresponses.

Oneoftheimportantrolesofthisprojectwastoconnectandrelatetheotherprojectstoeachother.Eachteammemberspentatleastawholedaywithoneothergroup,andfedbacktoourprojecttheessentialpatternsofeachprojectwhichwethenorganizedintothefollowinggraphic.Thisexchangewasalsoadvantageoustocommunicatetotheotherteamssomeofthewaysthatallprojectsweremeanttocontributetothebroaderecosystemandcommunity.ForalltheprojectstheCEDPteamdeliveredthefollowingtwocriteriatointegrateintotheirprojects:1.Whatformsofcapitalotherthanfinancialwillyourprojectbuild?2.Howwillyourprojectstrengthencommunity?Basedonourfindingswelayeredthatinformationoverourpreviousneedsinventory.Followingisaworkinprogressrepresentation:

3.BonsSonhosThe teamput togethersomeof therecurring themes thatpeopleexpressed intoagoalstatement,byplacingthewordsexpressedbycommunitymembersabouttheirfuture reality in active voice and present tense. This is a common excercise inEcologicalDesignProcesstotestGoalStatementsforauthenticity.Asongemergedfromthisexcercise,itbecameasortofanthemforthesummit,stillbeingsungandhummedbychildrenandadultsinBoaVista.

4.LivingSchoolConceptMapThefactthatpeopleneedtoleaveforschoolandforworkisabigsourceofconcernand hardship for people in Boa Vista do Acará.We brainstormed ways in whichconnectionscanbemadetoUFPAandothereducational institutions,andhowtheunused resources of APOBV and the wisdom present in the community can beoptimized to fill some of the vacuums in the educational opportunities in thecommunity.Tighteningthebondswiththeschoolandaccesstointernetwillmakefurtherexplorationofeducationalopportunitiespossible.APOBVleadershipandtheschoolteachers have had a first meeting and they are collaborating on severalinitiatives including the creationof a school gardenand sandcourt.Thiagowillbeteaching music lessons as a volunteer for the rest of the year. Renata will alsocoordinateactivitiesrevolvingaroundart,recyclingandecologicalagriculture.

5.IgarapéConservationThe Igarapésarepoolsof slowly runningwater that springs fromthe forest floor.They connect to each other and are common places for recreation, meetings,washingclothesanddishes,andbathing.Theyareessentialtocommunitylife.Theyarealsofillingupwithsandfromerosionbecauseofclearcutting intheirvicinity.Startingwith the skill building exerciseswebegan to experimentwith some lighttouchconservationworksdiggingasmalltrenchoncontouranddoingplantingstoholdbackerosion.Theteamspentagreatamountoftimediscussingtheconcernofthecommunityforsomesortofconservation/regenerationstrategy.Thishasbeenidentifiedasoneofthecrucialprojectsforthecommunitymovingforwardandcanbe one of the places where resources are redirected from income generatingprojects.

ThereisgreatconcernforthefutureoftheIgarapésduetothefuturepavingofthemain stretch inBoaVista, aswell as deforestation from the electrical lineswhichwill directly impact the Igarapés. A proper assessment of potential damage isnecessaryinorderforthecommunitytotakepreventiveand/orrestorativeactions.

6.TheFornoastheHeartoftheAlamedaThe outdoor processing plant where cassava flour or "farinha" is produced is aconglomerateofappropriateandhumanscale technologies fromwhichemergesalivelihoodthatistotallyinharmonywithitsecosystem.Thevariabilityoffarinha'smarket price over the years made the process incredibly burdensome for manyfamilies in theregionacoupleofdecadesbackandmanycommunitiesshutdowntheir farinhaoperations.Families thatmade it through thatdifficult timearenowfacing thechallenge thatchildrengrowingup through thosedaysarenotcarryingonthetraditioneventhoughthemarketpricehasgoneupanditispossibletogetbywithout having to produce farinha everyday. The parents all encouraged theirkids togo toschoolandpursueother jobsandthekidsalsogrewupafraidof thebackbreaking labor their parentswent through, and the formal education systemwhichisobligatorybylawhasseparatedanentiregenerationfromthelivelihoodoftheirparentsbeitfarinha,açaioranyofthetraditionalfoodways.Observingthefarinhaprocessitisimpressivetonotethatthelinesofrawmaterialandfinishedproductnevercrosseachother,materialsthattouchthefoodpreparingsurfacesnevertouchthefloor,andmanyotherexamplesoffoodsafetyproceduresof the strictest nature are present in a millennia old process. Even the bio charyieldedasawasteoftheprocessgoestocontributetothefertilityofthegardensaswellasthestabilityoftheclimate.

The fornos are a source of pride for families aswell as a source of pain from thedisconnectiontothenextgenerations.Isitpossiblethatbecausefarinhaisnotbeingproduced every day that these processing plants can be adapted to the otherprocessesessentialtoprojectsstartedatIDDSAmazonorbeyond?Whatabouttheuseoftheseforcommonmealsforthestrengtheningofcommunityforthesharingofmealsandworkloads?Whatwouldhappen ifwe combine the fornowithother appropriate technologieslikegenerationofelectricityfromheat,andmicrogasifyingmechanismslikerocketandTLUDsystems,biocharproduction,andthefirelessoven?

7.PoliticiansLetterofCommitmentOur team drafted the following letter of commitment for communitymembers toadapt according to their needs. It is a tool in dealing with politicians and theirvarying willingness to keep promises made to communities especially when itcomestorespectingpublicserviceneedsandecosystemhealth.It is a document that they can ask politicians to sign during their campaignsagreeingtolookaftercommunityinterests,whenthesepoliticianscomeintopowertheycanusethisletterasaremindertothepoliticianandalsoasawaytoexertthenecessarypressurewhenthecircumstancecallsforit.

9.DreamTreeInoneofour interviewswitha schoolteacher she reportedhavingadifficult timelearningaboutchildren'sdreams in thecommunity.Shewentas faras tosay thatchildren do not have dreams. This contrasted with our experience speaking tochildren,wehadaveryeasytimedreamingupadventureplaygroundstogether.WecreatedawayforpeopletoarticulatedreamsandvisionsandeasilysharetheminacommonspaceatAPOBV.WeusedAçaípalmandnaturalfiberstohangthemfromthebranches.

10.WasteManagementSystemOne of the great learnings at IDDS Amazon was that even though we had lessparticipantsthanexpected,andnoneofthemselectedtheWasteManagementTeamasatopchoice,ifweweretodoitalloveragainwewouldnoteliminatethisproject.The summit had an awesome waste management system which led to theproductionofonly86.7kgofwasteduringthewholesummit.Thatwasallthewastegeneratedby70peopleduring2wholeweeks!HowevertheissueatAPOBVandBoaVistaatlargeremains.Theiragreementwiththeir buyers onlydemandsminimalmanagement ofwastewhichmeans a hole intheforestfloorlikemanywehaveseenthroughoutourvisits.

WehaveformedacommitteeattheschoolandatAPOBVtoworkonthisissueatthegrassrootslevel.Andwehavedraftedawastemanagementplantotaketheissuetothe communitywide level forawaste collection system tobe implemented in thecommunity.

LessonsLearnedThis team's experimental engagement in a broader design process yielded manylessonsthatarestillunfolding.1.Usingmodelsthatdealwithbroadersystemsdesignandcomplexityisachallengebecause of all the moving parts. This approach is also proving to be crucial inmovingforwardinawaythathelpscommunitiesempowerthemselves.2. Ecological Design Process, Holistic Management, Regenerative Enterprise,TimelessWayofBuilding,PathofLeastResistanceareoverlappingmethodologiesthatbeginwithpeoplevisioning togetherabout the futureof theirecosystemandcommunity.ThishasbeenanelementmissinginIDDSmethods,thoughtheseedhasbeenpresentintheHopesandDreamssectionofMorningCircle.Thisteamtookonthisaspectofdesignprocessheadonandfoundthatthehubrisofa2weekdesignevent, the high pressures of producing somethingwork against the taking a stepbacknecessarytovision,anddocumentandprocessallthevisioning.Furthermore,theacademicanddevelopmentfocused,industrialized(andindustrializing)cultureisonewheremanypeopleusethehubrisandbusy-nessofaproductivitymindsetasjustificationtonotthinkaboutwhattheywantforthemselves,tonotengageinselfcareandtendtorelationships,andthisisthekindofbehaviorwearemodelingforcommunities.3. The advances made during the design process leading up to the summit wasproblematicbecausetheteamwhenintroducedtotheworkwasdisappointedthattheywerepushingfurtherotherpeople'swork.Andsoeventhoughwesaythatitisalrightforprojectstobeframedaroundotherphasesfurtheralongthedesigncycle,there may need to be more management of expectations around this forparticipants. Thewaywe addressed it in this teamwas to leave completely openhowtomoveforward.Theteamchosetogobacktosquareone.Itwasimportanttoallowthat in termsof facilitationbecausethentheytookownershipof theprojectanditisamazinghowmuchwasrealizedinsuchashorttime.4.Homestaysarecrucialtogroundingdesignprocessesinreality.5.Itispossibletohaveanearzerowastesummit,andwehaveestablishedan87.6kgbaselineforothersummitstomeasureupagainst.6.ThequestionsthattheteamaskedcommunitymembersintheNeedsInventorycould have well been asked and probably processed more efficiently by theMonitoringandEvaluationFellow.However,thequestionswerenotonlyabouttheinformation being collected, it was about the connections being made betweenteammates, some ofwhom are locals, and their community! This is an importantthingtokeepinmind,becausetheinsightgainedanddistilledintoinfographicsbythe team are one important outcome, however the practice of pursuing anunderstanding of the other, and bridging that otherness has emergent propertiesthatarequitedifficulttocatalogueandaccountfor.7. There aremany design opportunities currently beyond the capacity of a lot ofIDIN.Theprojectsastheystandatthisstagefallshortatbeingfullyintegratedandwellfunctioningsystems,andneedalotofsupportfromotherholisticplannersanddesigners.

NextStepsandProjectFutureWeknewwhenweembarkedonthisjourneythatitwouldnotendwiththesummit.The ability to continue an immersion in Boa Vista do Acará as Senior DesignFacilitator has yielded a greater understanding of the reality of community andecosystem and this kind of immersion would benefit any summit.
